Spreading a heart full of love is a path to companionship with Brahmā.

And how does a mendicant practice in the way that is proper for an ascetic?
There are some mendicants who have given up covetousness, ill will, irritability, hostility, disdain, contempt, jealousy, stinginess, deviousness, deceit, bad desires, and wrong view. These stains, defects, and dregs of an ascetic are grounds for rebirth in places of loss, and are experienced in bad places. When they have given these up, they are practicing in the way that is proper for an ascetic, I say.
They see themselves purified from all these bad, unskillful qualities. Seeing this, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.
They meditate spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.
They meditate spreading a heart full of compassion …
They meditate spreading a heart full of rejoicing …
They meditate spreading a heart full of equanimity to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of equanimity to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.
Suppose there was a lotus pond with clear, sweet, cool water, clean, with smooth banks, delightful. Then along comes a person—whether from the east, west, north, or south—struggling in the oppressive heat, weary, thirsty, and parched. No matter what direction they come from, when they arrive at that lotus pond they would alleviate their thirst and heat exhaustion.
In the same way, suppose someone has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness—whether from a family of aristocrats, brahmins, merchants, or workers—and has arrived at the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One. Having developed love, compassion, rejoicing, and equanimity in this way they gain inner peace. Because of that inner peace they are practicing the way proper for an ascetic, I say.
And suppose someone has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness—whether from a family of aristocrats, brahmins, merchants, or workers—and they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. They’re an ascetic because of the ending of defilements.”

And how, monks, does a monk become one following practices fitting for recluses? In whatever monk who was covetous covetousness is got rid of, who was malevolent malevolence of mind is got rid of, who was wrathful wrath is got rid of, who was grudging grudging is got rid of, who was hypocritical hypocrisy is got rid of, who was spiteful spite is got rid of, who was jealous, jealousy is got rid of, who was stingy, stinginess is got rid of, who was treacherous, treachery is got rid of, who was crafty, craftiness is got rid of, who was of evil desires, evil desire is got rid of, who was of wrong view, wrong view is got rid of, I, monks, say that if he follows the practice fitting for recluses, there is a getting rid of those stains on recluses, defects in recluses, faults in recluses, occasions for the sorrowful states, of what is to be experienced in a bad bourn.
He beholds the self purified of all these evil unskilled states, he beholds the self freed. When he beholds the self purified of all these evil unskilled states, when he beholds the self feed, delight is born; rapture is born from delight; when he is in rapture the body is impassible; when the body is impassible he experiences joy; being joyful, the mind is concentrated. He dwells, having suffused the first quarter with a mind of friendliness, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; just so above, below, across; he dwells having suffused the whole world everywhere, in every way with a mind of friendliness that is far-reaching, wide-spread, immeasurable, without enmity, without malevolence. Monks, it is as if there were a lovely lotus-pond with clear water, sweet water, cool water, limpid, with beautiful banks; and if a man were to come along from the east, overcome and overpowered by the hot-weather heat, exhausted, parched and thirsty, he, on coming to that lotus-pond, might quench his thirst with water, might quench the hot-weather fever. Even so, monks, if from a noble’s family one has gone forth from home into homelessness and has come into this Dhamma and discipline taught by the Tathāgata, having thus developed friendliness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, he attains inward calm. I say it is by inward calm that he is following the practices fitting for recluses. Even so, monks, if from a brahman’s family one has gone forth from home into homelessness and has come into this Dhamma and discipline taught by the Tathāgata, having thus developed friendliness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, he attains inward calm. I say it is by inward calm that he is following the practices fitting for recluses. Even so, monks, if from a merchant’s family one has gone forth from home into homelessness and has come into this Dhamma and discipline taught by the Tathāgata, having thus developed friendliness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, he attains inward calm. Even so, monks, if from a worker’s family one has gone forth from home into homelessness and has come into this Dhamma and discipline taught by the Tathāgata, having thus developed friendliness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, he attains inward calm. “Well then, mendicant, you should train like this: ‘My mind will be steady and well settled internally. And bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen will not occupy my mind.’ That’s how you should train.
When your mind is steady and well settled internally, and bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen don’t occupy your mind, then you should train like this: ‘I will develop the heart’s release by love. I’ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, but just keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should train like this: ‘I will develop the heart’s release by compassion …’ … ‘I will develop the heart’s release by rejoicing …’ … ‘I will develop the heart’s release by equanimity. I’ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, but just keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should train like this: ‘I’ll meditate observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.’ That’s how you should train.

When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, but just keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, wherever you walk, you’ll walk comfortably. Wherever you stand, you’ll stand comfortably. Wherever you sit, you’ll sit comfortably. Wherever you lie down, you’ll lie down comfortably.”

… เพราะเหตุนั้นแหละภิกษุ เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า จิตของเราจักตั้งมั่น ดำรงอยู่ด้วยดีในภายใน และธรรมอันเป็นบาปอกุศลที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว จักไม่ครอบงำจิตได้ ภิกษุ เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุ เมื่อใด จิตของเธอเป็นจิตตั้งมั่น ดำรงอยู่ด้วยดีแล้วในภายใน และธรรมอันเป็นบาปอกุศลที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ไม่ครอบงำจิตได้ เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า เราจักเจริญ กระทำให้มากซึ่งเมตตาเจโตวิมุตติ ทำให้เป็นดุจยาน ทำให้เป็นที่อาศัยได้ ให้มั่นคง สั่งสมเนื่องๆ ปรารภสม่ำเสมอดีแล้ว เมื่อใด เธอเจริญ กระทำให้มาก ซึ่งสมาธินี้อย่างนี้แล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีวิตกวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก มีแต่วิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยความสำราญ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยอุเบกขา ภิกษุ เมื่อใด เธอเจริญสมาธินี้อย่างนี้ เจริญดีแล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า เราจักเจริญกระทำให้มากซึ่งกรุณาเจโตวิมุติ … มุทิตาเจโตวิมุติ … อุเบกขาเจโตวิมุตติ ทำให้เป็นดุจยาน ทำให้เป็นที่อาศัยได้ ให้มั่นคง สั่งสมเนื่องๆ ปรารภสม่ำเสมอดีแล้ว เมื่อใด เธอเจริญกระทำให้มากซึ่งสมาธินี้อย่างนี้แล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีวิตกวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก มีแต่วิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยความสำราญ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยอุเบกขา.
ภิกษุ เมื่อใด เธอเจริญสมาธินี้อย่างนี้ เจริญดีแล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า เราจักพิจารณาเห็นกายในกายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย ภิกษุ เธอพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้แล ภิกษุ เมื่อใด เธอเจริญกระทำให้มากซึ่งสมาธินี้อย่างนี้แล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอพึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีวิตกวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก มีแต่วิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ไม่มีปีติ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยความสำราญ พึงเจริญสมาธินี้แม้ประกอบด้วยอุเบกขา.

ภิกษุ เมื่อใดเธอเจริญสมาธินี้อย่างนี้ เจริญดีแล้ว เมื่อนั้น เธอจักเดินไปทางใดๆ ก็จักเดินเป็นสุขในทางนั้นๆ ยืนอยู่ในที่ใดๆ ก็จักยืนเป็นสุขในที่นั้นๆ นั่งอยู่ในที่ใดๆ ก็จักนั่งเป็นสุขในที่นั้นๆ นอนอยู่ที่ใดๆ ก็จักนอนเป็นสุขในที่นั้นๆ.

…วาเสฏฐะ ภิกษุย่อมพิจารณาเห็นนิวรณ์ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ที่ตนยังละไม่ได้ เหมือนความเป็นหนี้ เหมือนความมีโรค เหมือนการติดเรือนจำ เหมือนความเป็นทาส เหมือนหนทางไกลอันกันดาร และเธอย่อมพิจารณาเห็นนิวรณ์ ๕ ประการที่ละได้แล้วในตน เหมือนความไม่มีหนี้ เหมือนความไม่มีโรค เหมือนการพ้นจากเรือนจำ เหมือนความมีอิสรภาพ เหมือนภูมิภาคอันน่ารื่นรมณ์ ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน.
เมื่อเธอพิจารณาเห็นนิวรณ์ ๕ เหล่านี้ ที่ตนละได้แล้วปราโมทย์ย่อมเกิด เมื่อเกิดปราโมทย์แล้ว ปีติย่อมเกิด เมื่อมีใจประกอบด้วยปีติแล้ว กายย่อมสงบระงับ เมื่อกายสงบระงับแล้ว ย่อมเสวยสุข จิตของผู้มีสุขย่อมตั้งมั่นเป็นสมาธิ.
เธอมีจิตประกอบด้วยเมตตา แผ่ไปสู่ทิศที่หนึ่ง ทิศที่สอง ทิศที่สาม ทิศที่สี่ ก็เหมือนกันอย่างนั้น ทั้งเบื้องบน เบื้องล่าง เบื้องขวาง เธอแผ่ไปตลอดโลกทั้งสิ้น ในที่ทั้งปวง แก่สัตว์ทั้งหลายทั่วหน้าเสมอกัน ด้วยจิตอันประกอบด้วยเมตตา เป็นจิตไพบูลย์ ใหญ่หลวง ไม่มีประมาณ ไม่มีเวร ไม่มีพยาบาทแล้วแลอยู่ วาเสฏฐะ เปรียบเหมือนคนเป่าสังข์ผู้มีกำลัง ย่อมเป่าสังข์ให้ได้ยินได้ทั้งสี่ทิศโดยไม่ยากฉันใด ในเมตตาเจโตวิมุตติ ที่เจริญแล้วอย่างนี้ กรรมที่ทำพอประมาณอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ย่อมไม่มีเหลืออยู่ ไม่ตั้งอยู่ในนั้น ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน วาเสฏฐะ นี้แลเป็นทางไปเพื่อความเป็นสหายแห่งพรหม.
วาเสฏฐะ ข้ออื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุมีจิตประกอบด้วยกรุณา แผ่ไปสู่ทิศที่หนึ่ง ทิศที่สอง ทิศที่สาม ทิศที่สี่ ก็เหมือนกันอย่างนั้น ทั้งเบื้องบน เบื้องล่าง เบื้องขวาง เธอแผ่ไปตลอดโลกทั้งสิ้น ในที่ทั้งปวง แก่สัตว์ทั้งหลายทั่วหน้าเสมอกัน ด้วยจิตอันประกอบด้วยกรุณา เป็นจิตไพบูลย์ ใหญ่หลวง ไม่มีประมาณ ไม่มีเวร ไม่มีพยาบาทแล้วแลอยู่ วาเสฏฐะ เปรียบเหมือนคนเป่าสังข์ผู้มีกำลัง ย่อมเป่าสังข์ให้ได้ยินได้ทั้งสี่ทิศโดยไม่ยากฉันใด ในกรุณาเจโตวิมุตติ ที่เจริญแล้วอย่างนี้ กรรมที่ทำพอประมาณอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ย่อมไม่มีเหลืออยู่ ไม่ตั้งอยู่ในนั้น ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน วาเสฏฐะ นี้แลเป็นทางไปเพื่อความเป็นสหายแห่งพรหม.
