The benefits of spreading a heart full of love, compassion, rejoicing and equanimity then seeing impermanence.

“Mendicants, these four people are found in the world. What four?
Firstly, a person meditates spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will. They contemplate the phenomena there—included in form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness—as impermanent, as suffering, as diseased, as a boil, as a dart, as misery, as an affliction, as alien, as falling apart, as empty, as not-self. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the pure abodes. This rebirth is not shared with ordinary people.
Furthermore, a person meditates spreading a heart full of compassion … rejoicing … equanimity to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of equanimity to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will. “There is the case where an individual keeps pervading the first direction [the east]—as well as the second direction, the third, & the fourth—with an awareness imbued with goodwill. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, & all around, everywhere & in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with goodwill: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. He regards whatever phenomena there that are connected with form, feeling, perception, fabrications, & consciousness, as inconstant, stressful, a disease, a cancer, an arrow, painful, an affliction, alien, a disintegration, an emptiness, not-self. At the break-up of the body, after death, he reappears in conjunction with the Devas of the Pure Abodes. This rebirth is not in common with run-of-the-mill people.

๑) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ มีจิตประกอบด้วยเมตตา แผ่ไปสู่ทิศที่หนึ่ง ทิศที่สอง ทิศที่สาม ทิศที่สี่ ก็เหมือนกันอย่างนั้น ทั้งเบื้องบน เบื้องล่าง เบื้องขวาง เธอแผ่ไปตลอดโลกทั้งสิ้น ในที่ทั้งปวง แก่สัตว์ทั้งหลายทั่วหน้าเสมอกัน ด้วยจิตอันประกอบด้วยเมตตา เป็นจิตไพบูลย์ ใหญ่หลวง ไม่มีประมาณ ไม่มีเวร ไม่มีพยาบาทแล้วแลอยู่ รูป เวทนา สัญญา สังขาร และวิญญาณอันใด มีอยู่ในธรรมนั้น บุคคลนั้นพิจารณาเห็นธรรมเหล่านั้น โดยความเป็นของไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ เป็นดังโรค เป็นดังหัวฝี เป็นดังลูกศร เป็นของทนได้ยาก เป็นของเบียดเบียน เป็นของไม่เชื่อฟัง เป็นของต้องแตกสลายไป เป็นของว่างเปล่า เป็นอนัตตา บุคคลนั้นภายหลังจากการตาย เพราะกายแตกทำลาย ย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของเทวดาเหล่าสุทธาวาส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความอุบัตินี้แล ไม่ทั่วไปด้วยปุถุชน.
