Reflection to give up the vanity of life.

“My lifestyle was delicate, mendicants, most delicate, extremely delicate.
In my father’s home, lotus ponds were made just for me. In some, blue water lilies blossomed, while in others, there were pink or white lotuses, just for my benefit. I only used sandalwood from Kāsī, and my turbans, jackets, sarongs, and upper robes also came from Kāsī. And a white parasol was held over me night and day, with the thought: ‘Don’t let cold, heat, grass, dust, or damp bother him.’
I had three stilt longhouses—one for the winter, one for the summer, and one for the rainy season. I stayed in a stilt longhouse without coming downstairs for the four months of the rainy season, where I was entertained by musicians—none of them men.
While the bondservants, workers, and staff in other houses are given rough gruel with pickles to eat, in my father’s home they eat fine rice with meat.
Amid such prosperity and such a delicate lifestyle, I thought: ‘When an unlearned ordinary person—who is liable to grow old, not being exempt from old age—sees someone else who is old, they’re horrified, repelled, and disgusted, overlooking the fact that they themselves are in the same situation. But since I, too, am liable to grow old, it would not be appropriate for me to be horrified, embarrassed, and disgusted, when I see someone else who is old.’ Reflecting like this, I entirely gave up the vanity of youth.
‘When an unlearned ordinary person—who is liable to get sick, not being exempt from sickness—sees someone else who is sick, they’re horrified, repelled, and disgusted, overlooking the fact that they themselves are in the same situation. But since I, too, am liable to get sick, it would not be appropriate for me to be horrified, embarrassed, and disgusted, when I see someone else who is sick.’ Reflecting like this, I entirely gave up the vanity of health.

There are these three vanities. What three? The vanity of youth, of health, and of life.
Intoxicated with the vanity of youth, an unlearned ordinary person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Intoxicated with the vanity of health …

Intoxicated with the vanity of youth, health, or life, a mendicant resigns the training and returns to a lesser life.
For others, sickness is natural,
and so are old age and death.
Though this is how their nature is,
ordinary people feel disgusted.
If I were to be disgusted
with creatures whose nature is such,
it would not be appropriate for me,
since my life is just the same.
Living in such a way,
I understood the reality without attachments.
I mastered all vanities—
of health, of youth,
and even of life—
seeing renunciation as sanctuary.
Zeal sprang up in me
as I looked to extinguishment.
Now I’m unable
to indulge in sensual pleasures;
there’s no turning back,
I’m committed to the spiritual life.”

“Bhikkhus, I was delicately nurtured, most delicately nurtured, extremely delicately nurtured. At my father’s residence lotus ponds were made just for my enjoyment: in one of them blue lotuses bloomed, in another red lotuses, and in a third white lotuses. I used no sandalwood unless it came from Kāsi and my headdress, jacket, lower garment, and upper garment were made of cloth from Kāsi. By day and by night a white canopy was held over me so that cold and heat, dust, grass, and dew would not settle on me.
“I had three mansions: one for the winter, one for the summer, and one for the rainy season. I spent the four months of the rains in the rainy-season mansion, being entertained by musicians, none of whom were male, and I did not leave the mansion. While in other people’s homes slaves, workers, and servants are given broken rice together with sour gruel for their meals, in my father’s residence they were given choice hill rice, meat, and boiled rice.
(1) “Amid such splendor and a delicate life, it occurred to me: ‘An uninstructed worldling, though himself subject to old age, not exempt from old age, feels repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when he sees another who is old, overlooking his own situation. Now I too am subject to old age and am not exempt from old age. Such being the case, if I were to feel repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when seeing another who is old, that would not be proper for me.’ When I reflected thus, my intoxication with youth was completely abandoned.
(2) “Again, it occurred to me: ‘An uninstructed worldling, though himself subject to illness, not exempt from illness, feels repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when he sees another who is ill, overlooking his own situation. Now I too am subject to illness and am not exempt from illness. Such being the case, if I were to feel repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when seeing another who is ill, that would not be proper for me.’ When I reflected thus, my intoxication with health was completely abandoned.
(3) “Again, it occurred to me: ‘An uninstructed worldling, though himself subject to death, not exempt from death, feels repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when he sees another who has died, overlooking his own situation. Now I too am subject to death and am not exempt from death. Such being the case, if I were to feel repelled, humiliated, and disgusted when seeing another who has died, that would not be proper for me.’ When I reflected thus, my intoxication with life was completely abandoned.
“There are, bhikkhus, these three kinds of intoxication. What three? Intoxication with youth, intoxication with health, and intoxication with life. (1) An uninstructed worldling, intoxicated with youth, engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell. (2) An uninstructed worldling, intoxicated with health, engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind. (3) An uninstructed worldling, intoxicated with life, engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind. ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราเป็นผู้ละเอียดอ่อน ละเอียดอ่อนอย่างยิ่ง ละเอียดอ่อนอย่างที่สุด ดังเราจะเล่าให้ฟัง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เขาขุดสระ ๓ สระในวังแห่งบิดาของเรา ในสระหนึ่งปลูกอุบล (บัวเขียว) สระหนึ่งปลูกปทุม (บัวหลวง) สระหนึ่งปลูกบุณฑริก (บัวขาว) เพื่อประโยชน์แก่เรา.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มิใช่ว่าจันทน์ที่เราใช้อย่างเดียวที่มาจากเมืองกาสี ถึงผ้าโพก เสื้อ ผ้านุ่ง ผ้าห่ม ก็ล้วนมาจากเมืองกาสี ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เขาคอยกั้นเศวตฉัตรให้เราด้วยหวังว่า ความหนาว ความร้อน ละออง หญ้า หรือน้ำค้าง อย่าได้ถูกต้องเราทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มีปราสาทสำหรับเรา ๓ หลัง หลังหนึ่งสำหรับฤดูหนาว หลังหนึ่งสำหรับฤดูร้อน และหลังหนึ่งสำหรับฤดูฝน เราอยู่บนปราสาทสำหรับฤดูฝน ตลอดสี่เดือนฤดูฝน ให้เขาบำเรออยู่ด้วยดนตรีอันปราศจากบุรุษ ไม่ลงจากปราสาททั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในวังแห่งบิดาของเรา เขาให้ข้าวสุกแห่งข้าวสาลีเจือด้วยเนื้อแก่ทาสและคนงาน (อย่างดาษดื่น) เช่นเดียวกับที่ที่อื่นเขาให้ปลายข้าวขนาดเล็กกับน้ำส้ม (น้ำผักดอง) แก่พวกทาสและคนใช้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเราเพียบพร้อมไปด้วยการได้ตามใจตัวถึงเพียงนี้ มีการได้รับความประคบประหงมถึงเพียงนี้ ความคิดก็ยังเกิดขึ้นแก่เราว่า ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ทั้งที่ตนเองเป็นผู้มีความแก่เป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความแก่ไปได้ แต่ครั้นเห็นคนอื่นแก่ ก็นึกอิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน ไม่นึกถึงตัวเองเสียเลยว่า ถึงเราเองก็เหมือนกัน เป็นผู้มีความแก่เป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความแก่ไปได้ ก็เมื่อเราซึ่งเป็นผู้มีความแก่เป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความแก่ไปได้ แล้วจะมาลืมตัว อิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน เมื่อเห็นคนอื่นแก่นั้น ไม่เป็นการสมควรแก่เรา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเราพิจารณาได้เช่นนี้ ความมัวเมาในความหนุ่มของเรา ได้หายไปหมดสิ้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ทั้งที่ตนเองเป็นผู้มีความเจ็บป่วยเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเจ็บป่วยไปได้ ครั้นเห็นคนอื่นเจ็บป่วย ก็นึกอิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน ไม่นึกถึงตัวเองเสียเลยว่า ถึงเราเองก็เหมือนกัน เป็นผู้มีความเจ็บป่วยเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเจ็บป่วยไปได้ ก็เมื่อเราซึ่งเป็นผู้มีความเจ็บป่วยเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเจ็บป่วยไปได้ แล้วจะมาลืมตัว อิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน เมื่อเห็นคนอื่นเจ็บป่วยนั้น ไม่เป็นการสมควรแก่เรา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเราพิจารณาได้เช่นนี้ ความมัวเมาในความไม่มีโรคของเรา ได้หายไปหมดสิ้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ทั้งที่ตนเองเป็นผู้มีความตายเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความตายไปได้ ครั้นเห็นคนอื่นตาย ก็อิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน ไม่นึกถึงตัวเองเสียเลยว่า ถึงเราเองก็เหมือนกัน เป็นผู้มีความตายเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความตายไปได้ ก็เมื่อเราซึ่งเป็นผู้มีความตายเป็นธรรมดา ไม่ล่วงพ้นความตายไปได้ แล้วจะมาลืมตัว อิดหนาระอาใจ สะอิดสะเอียน เมื่อเห็นคนอื่นตายนั้น ไม่เป็นการสมควรแก่เรา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเราพิจารณาได้เช่นนี้ ความมัวเมาในความมีชีวิตอยู่ของเรา ได้หายไปหมดสิ้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความมัวเมา ๓ อย่างเหล่านี้ ๓ อย่างอะไรบ้าง คือ ความมัวเมาในความเป็นหนุ่มเป็นสาว ความมัวเมาในความไม่มีโรค ความมัวเมาในความมีชีวิตอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ผู้มัวเมาด้วยความมัวเมาในความเป็นหนุ่มเป็นสาวย่อมประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจ ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ผู้มัวเมาแล้วด้วยความมัวเมาในความไม่มีโรค ย่อมประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจ ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ยินได้ฟัง ผู้มัวเมาแล้วด้วยความมัวเมาในความมีชีวิตอยู่ ย่อมประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจ ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุผู้เมาแล้วด้วยความมัวเมาในความเป็นหนุ่มสาว ย่อมบอกคืนสิกขากลับมาเป็นคฤหัสถ์ ภิกษุผู้เมาแล้วด้วยความมัวเมาในความไม่มีโรค ย่อมบอกคืนสิกขากลับมาเป็นคฤหัสถ์ ภิกษุผู้เมาแล้วด้วยความมัวเมาในความมีชีวิตอยู่ ย่อมบอกคืนสิกขากลับมาเป็นคฤหัสถ์.
สัตว์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมมีความแก่เป็นธรรมดา
มีความเจ็บป่วยเป็นธรรมดา มีความตายเป็นธรรมดา
สัตว์ทั้งหลายย่อมเป็นไปตามธรรมดา พวกปุถุชนย่อมเกลียด.
ถ้าเราพึงเกลียดธรรมนั้น ในพวกสัตว์ผู้มีอย่างนั้นเป็นธรรมดา
ข้อนั้นไม่สมควรแก่เราผู้เป็นอยู่อย่างนี้
เรานั้นเป็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ทราบธรรมที่หาอุปธิไม่ได้.
เห็นการออกบวชโดยเป็นธรรมเกษม
ครอบงำความมัวเมาทั้งปวง ในความไม่มีโรค
ในความเป็นหนุ่มสาวและในชีวิต.
ความอุตสาหะได้มีแล้วแก่เรา ผู้เห็นเฉพาะซึ่งนิพพาน
บัดนี้ เราไม่ควรเพื่อเสพกามทั้งหลาย
จักเป็นผู้ประพฤติไม่ถอยหลัง ตั้งหน้าประพฤติพรหมจรรย์.
