The teaching for junior mendicants.

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Magadhans at Andhakavinda. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“Ānanda, those mendicants who are junior, recently gone forth, newly come to this teaching and training should be encouraged, supported, and established in five things. What five?
They should be encouraged, supported, and established in restraint in the monastic code: ‘Reverends, please be ethical. Live restrained in the code of conduct, conducting yourselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, keep the rules you’ve undertaken.’
They should be encouraged, supported, and established in sense restraint: ‘Reverends, please live with sense doors guarded, mindfully alert and on guard, with protected mind, having a heart protected by mindfulness.’
They should be encouraged, supported, and established in limiting their speech: ‘Reverends, please speak little. Put a limit on your speech.’
They should be encouraged, supported, and established in retreat: ‘Reverends, please live in the wilderness. Frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.’
They should be encouraged, supported, and established in right perspective: ‘Reverends, please hold right view and have right perspective.’
Those mendicants who are junior, recently gone forth, newly come to this teaching and training should be encouraged, supported, and established in these five things.”

On one occasion the Blessed One was staying among the Magadhans at Andhakavinda. Then Ven. Ānanda went to him and, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there, the Blessed One said to him, “Ānanda, the new monks—those who have not long gone forth, who are newcomers in this Dhamma & Vinaya—should be encouraged, exhorted, and established in these five things. Which five?
“‘Come, friends, be virtuous. Dwell restrained in accordance with the Pāṭimokkha, consummate in your behavior & sphere of activity. Train yourselves, having undertaken the training rules, seeing danger in the slightest faults.’ Thus they should be encouraged, exhorted, & established in restraint in accordance with the Pāṭimokkha.
“‘Come, friends, dwell with your sense faculties guarded, with mindfulness as your protector, with mindfulness as your chief, with your intellect self-protected, endowed with an awareness protected by mindfulness.’ Thus they should be encouraged, exhorted, & established in restraint of the senses.
“‘Come, friends, speak only a little, place limits on your conversation.’ Thus they should be encouraged, exhorted, & established in limited conversation.
“‘Come, friends, dwell in the wilderness. Resort to remote wilderness & forest dwellings.’ Thus they should be encouraged, exhorted, & established in physical seclusion.
“Come, friends, develop right view. Be endowed with right vision.’ Thus they should be encouraged, exhorted, & established in right vision.
“New monks—those who have not long gone forth, who are newcomers in this Dhamma & Vinaya—should be encouraged, exhorted, and established in these five things.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่อันธกวินทวิหารในแคว้นมคธ ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระอานนท์เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วพระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะท่านพระอานนท์ว่า
อานนท์ ภิกษุเหล่าใด เป็นผู้ใหม่ บวชยังไม่นาน เพิ่งมาสู่ธรรมวินัยนี้ ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในธรรม ๕ ประการ ธรรม ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในปาติโมกขสังวร ดังนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโส พวกท่านทั้งหลาย จงเป็นผู้มีศีล จงสำรวมด้วยปาติโมกขสังวร จงเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยมารยาทและโคจร มีปกติเห็นภัยในโทษทั้งหลายแม้มีประมาณน้อย สมาทานศึกษาในสิกขาบททั้งหลายเถิด ดังนี้.
๒) ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในอินทรียสังวร ดังนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโส พวกท่านทั้งหลาย จงเป็นผู้คุ้มครองทวารในอินทรีย์ทั้งหลาย มีสติคอยอารักขา มีสติคอยปกป้อง มีใจถูกคุ้มครองแล้ว ประกอบด้วยจิตมีสติเป็นเครื่องรักษาอยู่เถิด ดังนี้.
๓) ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในการหยุดพูดพล่าม ดังนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโส พวกท่านทั้งหลาย จงเป็นผู้พูดแต่น้อยคำ จงหยุดการพูดพล่ามเสียเถิด ดังนี้.
๔) ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในการหลีกออกจากหมู่ด้วยกาย ดังนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโส พวกท่านทั้งหลาย จงเป็นผู้สมาทานการอยู่ป่า จงเสพเสนาสนะอันเงียบสงัด คือ ป่าและป่าชัฏเถิด ดังนี้.
๕) ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในความเห็นถูกต้อง ดังนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโส พวกท่านทั้งหลาย จงมีสัมมาทิฏฐิ ประกอบด้วยสัมมาทัสสนะเถิด ดังนี้.
อานนท์ ภิกษุเหล่าใด เป็นผู้ใหม่ บวชยังไม่นาน เพิ่งมาสู่ธรรมวินัยนี้ ภิกษุใหม่เหล่านั้น อันพวกเธอทั้งหลาย พึงให้สมาทาน ให้ตั้งมั่น ให้ดำรงอยู่ในธรรม ๕ ประการเหล่านี้แล.
