Gratification and drawback of sensual pleasures.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “For a long time, sir, I have understood your teaching like this: ‘Greed, hate, and delusion are corruptions of the mind.’ Despite understanding this, sometimes my mind is occupied by thoughts of greed, hate, and delusion. I wonder what qualities remain in me that I have such thoughts?”
“Mahānāma, there is a quality that remains in you that makes you have such thoughts. For if you had given up that quality you would not still be living at home and enjoying sensual pleasures. But because you haven’t given up that quality you are still living at home and enjoying sensual pleasures.
Sensual pleasures give little gratification and much suffering and distress, and they are all the more full of drawbacks. Even though a noble disciple has clearly seen this with right wisdom, so long as they don’t achieve the rapture and bliss that are apart from sensual pleasures and unskillful qualities, or something even more peaceful than that, they might still return to sensual pleasures. But when they do achieve that rapture and bliss, or something more peaceful than that, they will not return to sensual pleasures.
Before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I too clearly saw with right wisdom that: ‘Sensual pleasures give little gratification and much suffering and distress, and they are all the more full of drawbacks.’ But so long as I didn’t achieve the rapture and bliss that are apart from sensual pleasures and unskillful qualities, or something even more peaceful than that, I didn’t announce that I would not return to sensual pleasures. But when I did achieve that rapture and bliss, or something more peaceful than that, I announced that I would not return to sensual pleasures.
And what is the gratification of sensual pleasures? There are these five kinds of sensual stimulation. What five? Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. Sounds known by the ear … Smells known by the nose … Tastes known by the tongue … Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation. The pleasure and happiness that arise from these five kinds of sensual stimulation: this is the gratification of sensual pleasures.
And what is the drawback of sensual pleasures? It’s when a gentleman earns a living by means such as computing, accounting, calculating, farming, trade, raising cattle, archery, government service, or one of the professions. But they must face cold and heat, being hurt by the touch of flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and reptiles, and risking death from hunger and thirst. This is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
That gentleman might try hard, strive, and make an effort, but fail to earn any money. If this happens, they sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion, saying: ‘Oh, my hard work is wasted. My efforts are fruitless!’ This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
That gentleman might try hard, strive, and make an effort, and succeed in earning money. But they experience pain and sadness when they try to protect it, thinking: ‘How can I prevent my wealth from being taken by rulers or bandits, consumed by fire, swept away by flood, or taken by unloved heirs?’ And even though they protect it and ward it, rulers or bandits take it, or fire consumes it, or flood sweeps it away, or unloved heirs take it. They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion: ‘What used to be mine is gone.’ This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures kings fight with kings, aristocrats fight with aristocrats, brahmins fight with brahmins, and householders fight with householders. A mother fights with her child, child with mother, father with child, and child with father. Brother fights with brother, brother with sister, sister with brother, and friend fights with friend. Once they’ve started quarreling, arguing, and disputing, they attack each other with fists, stones, rods, and swords, resulting in death and deadly pain. This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they don their sword and shield, fasten their bow and arrows, and plunge into a battle massed on both sides, with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing. There they are struck with arrows and spears, and their heads are chopped off, resulting in death and deadly pain. This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they don their sword and shield, fasten their bow and arrows, and charge wetly plastered bastions, with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing. There they are struck with arrows and spears, splashed with dung, crushed with spiked blocks, and their heads are chopped off, resulting in death and deadly pain. This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they break into houses, plunder wealth, steal from isolated buildings, commit highway robbery, and commit adultery. The rulers would arrest them and subject them to various punishments—whipping, caning, and clubbing; cutting off hands or feet, or both; cutting off ears or nose, or both; the ‘porridge pot’, the ‘shell-shave’, the ‘demon’s mouth’, the ‘garland of fire’, the ‘burning hand’, the ‘grass blades’, the ‘bark dress’, the ‘antelope’, the ‘meat hook’, the ‘coins’, the ‘caustic pickle’, the ‘twisting bar’, the ‘straw mat’; being splashed with hot oil, being fed to the dogs, being impaled alive, and being beheaded. These result in death and deadly pain. This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.
Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures, they conduct themselves badly by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. This is a drawback of sensual pleasures to do with lives to come, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures. …

Then Mahānāma the Sakyan approached the Blessed One, paid respects to him, and sat to one side. When he was seated to one side, Mahānāma said to the Blessed One, “Bhante, for a long time I have understood the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One in this way: ‘Greed is a defilement of the mind, hate is a defilement of the mind, delusion is a defilement of the mind.’ Bhante, this is how I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One: ‘Greed is a defilement of the mind, hate is a defilement of the mind, delusion is a defilement of the mind.’ But sometimes my mind is overwhelmed by the nature of greed, the nature of hate, and the nature of delusion. Bhante, it occurs to me, ‘What phenomenon has not been internally abandoned by me, on account of which my mind is sometimes overwhelmed by the nature of greed, the nature of hate, and the nature of delusion?’
“Mahānāma, there is a phenomenon which has not been internally abandoned by you, on account of which your mind is sometimes overwhelmed by the nature of greed, the nature of hate, and the nature of delusion. Mahānāma, if that phenomenon was internally abandoned by you, you would not live a household life, and you would not indulge in sensuality. Mahānāma, because that phenomenon has not been internally abandoned by you, you still live a household life and you still indulge in sensuality.
“‘Sensuality has little gratification – it brings much suffering and much anguish; the drawback here is greater.’ Mahānāma, even if a disciple of the noble ones has truly seen this well with correct wisdom, if he does not attain rapture and happiness apart from sensuality and unwholesome phenomena1 or something more peaceful than that2, then he does not turn away from sensuality. Mahānāma, when a disciple of the noble ones has truly seen well with correct wisdom that ‘sensuality has little gratification – it brings much suffering and much anguish; the drawback here is greater,’ and he attains rapture and happiness apart from sensuality and unwholesome phenomena or something more peaceful than that, then he turns away from sensuality.
“Mahānāma, before my Awakening, when I was still an unawakened Bodhisatta3, I truly saw well with correct wisdom that ‘sensuality has little gratification – it brings much suffering and much anguish; the drawback here is greater.’ However, I did not attain rapture and happiness apart from sensuality and unwholesome phenomena or something more peaceful than that, so I did not turn away from sensuality. But, Mahānāma, when I truly saw well with correct wisdom that ‘sensuality has little gratification – it brings much suffering and much anguish; the drawback here is greater,’ and I attained rapture and happiness apart from sensuality and unwholesome phenomena or something more peaceful than that, then I turned away from sensuality.
“Mahānāma, what is the gratification in relation to sensuality?1 … this is a future drawback in relation to sensuality: the mass of suffering which is caused by sensuality, originates in sensuality, is the consequence of sensuality – the cause of which is just sensuality. …

Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went to the Blessed One, and after paying homage to him, he sat down at one side. When he had done so he said: “Venerable Sir, I have long known the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One thus: ‘Greed is an imperfection of mind, hate is an imperfection of mind, delusion is an imperfection of mind.’ Yet while I know the Dhamma as taught by the Blessed One thus, at times ideas (dhammas) of greed invade my mind and remain, ideas of hate invade my mind and remain, ideas of delusion invade my mind and remain: I have wondered, venerable sir, what dhamma is still unabandoned by me in myself owing to which at times these ideas (dhammas) invade my mind and remain.”
“Mahānāma, there is still a dhamma unabandoned in you, owing to which at times ideas (dhammas) of greed… of hate… of delusion invade your mind and remain; for were that dhamma already abandoned by you in yourself you would not be living the house life, you would not be enjoying sensual desires. It is because there is still that dhamma unabandoned by you in yourself that you are living the house life and enjoying sensual desires.
“If, though a Noble Disciple has clearly seen, as it actually is, with right understanding how sensual desires provide little gratification and much suffering and despair, and how great is the danger in them, then for as long as he still does not attain to the happiness and pleasure that are quite apart from sensual desires, apart from unprofitable dhammas, or to something more peaceful even than that, he is still not averse to sensual desires.
“But when a noble disciple has clearly seen, as it actually is, with right understanding how sensual desires provide little gratification and much suffering and despair and how great is the danger in them, then when he attains to the happiness and pleasure that are quite apart from sensual desires, apart from unprofitable dhammas, or to something more peaceful even than that, he is no more unaverse to sensual desires.
“Before my enlightenment, while I was still only an unenlightened Bodhisatta, when I too saw clearly as it actually is, with right understanding, how sensual desires provide little gratification and much suffering and despair, and how great is the danger in them, then for as long as I still did not attain to the happiness and pleasure that are quite apart from sensual desires, apart from unprofitable dhammas, or to something more peaceful even than that, I recognized that I was still not averse to sensual desires.
“But when I clearly saw, as it actually is, with right understanding, how sensual desires provide little gratification and much suffering and despair, and how great is the danger in them, then when I attained to the happiness and pleasure that are quite apart from sensual desire, apart from unprofitable dhammas, or to something more peaceful even than that, I recognized that I was no more unaverse to sensual desires.
(i) “And what is the gratification in the case of sensual desires? Mahānāma, there are… these five cords of sensual desires. What are the five? Forms cognizable through the eye that are wished for, desired, agreeable and likable, connected with sensual desire, and provocative of lust. Sounds cognizable through the ear… Odours cognizable through the nose… Flavours cognizable through the tongue… Tangibles cognizable through the body that are wished for, desired, agreeable and likable, connected with sensual desire, and provocative of lust. These are the five cords of sensual desire.
“Now the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on those five cords of sensual desire are the gratification in the case of sensual desires.
(ii) “And what is the danger in the case of sensual desires?
“Here, bhikkhus, on account of the calling by which a clansman makes a living, whether checking or accounting or calculating or ploughing or trading or cattle farming or archery or as a king’s man, or whatever the calling may be, he has to face cold, he has to face heat, he is harassed by mosquitoes and flies, wind and sun and creeping things, risking death by hunger and thirst.
“Now this danger in the case of sensual desires, this mass of suffering visible here and now, has sensual desires for its reason, sensual desires for its source, sensual desires for its cause, the reason being simply sensual desires.
“If no property comes to the clansman while he works and strives and makes efforts thus, he sorrows, grieves and laments, beating his breast he weeps till he is distraught, crying: ‘My work is vain, my work is fruitless!’
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason being simply sensual desires.
“If property comes to the clansman while he works and strives and makes efforts thus, he experiences pain and grief in protecting it: ‘How shall neither kings nor thieves make off with my property nor fire burn it nor water sweep it away nor hateful heirs make off with it?’
“And as he guards and protects his property, kings or thieves make off with it or fire burns it or water sweeps it away or hateful heirs make off with it. And he sorrows, grieves and laments, beating his breast he weeps till he is distraught, crying: ‘What I had I have no more.’
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason being simply sensual desires.
“Again, with sensual desires for the reason, sensual desires for the source, sensual desires for the cause, the reason being simply sensual desires, kings quarrel with kings, warrior-nobles with warrior-nobles, divines with divines, householders with householders, mother with child, child with mother, father with child, child with father, brother with brother, brother with sister, friend with friend. And here in their quarrels, brawls and disputes they attack each other with fists or with clods or with sticks or with knives, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason being simply sensual desires.
“Again, with sensual desires for the reason… men take swords and shields and buckle on bows and quivers, and they charge into battle massed in double array with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing; and there they are wounded by arrows and spears, and their heads are cut off by swords, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason is simply sensual desires.,
“Again, with sensual desires for the reason… men take swords and shields and buckle on bows and quivers, and they charge slippery bastions, with arrows and spears flying, and swords flashing; and there they are wounded by arrows and spears and splashed with boiling liquids and crushed under heavy weights, and their heads are cut off by swords, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason is simply sensual desires.
“Again, with sensual desires for the reason… men break in and steal, turn bandit, rob highways, seduce others’ wives; so that when they are caught, kings have many kinds of torture inflicted on them.
“They have them flogged with whips, beaten with canes, beaten with clubs, they have their hands cut off, their feet cut off, their hands and feet cut off, their ears cut off, their noses cut off, their ears and noses cut off, they have them subjected to the ‘porridge-pot’, to the ‘polished-shell shave’, to the ‘eclipse’s mouth’, to the ‘fiery wreath’, to the ‘fiery hand’, to the ‘blades of grass’, to the ‘bark dress’, to the ‘antelope’, to the ‘meat-hooks’, to the ‘coins’, to the ‘lye-pickling’, to the ‘pivoting-pin’, to the ‘rolled-up palliasse’, and they have them splashed with boiling oil, and they have them thrown to dogs to devour, and they have them impaled alive on stakes, and they have their heads cut off with swords, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.
“Now this danger too in the case of sensual desires… the reason is simply sensual desires.
“Again, with sensual desires for the reason, sensual desires for the source, sensual desires for the cause, the reason being simply sensual desires, men indulge in misconduct of body, speech and mind: on the dissolution of the body, after death, they reappear in states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, even in hell. Now this danger in the case of sensual desires, this mass of suffering in lives to come, has sensual desires for its reason, sensual desires for its source, sensual desires for its cause, the reason being simply sensual desires. …

As Mahānāma the Sakyan was sitting down at a respectful distance, he spoke thus to the Lord:
“For a long time, Lord, I have thus understood Dhamma taught by the Lord: ‘Greed is a depravity of the mind, aversion is a depravity of the mind, confusion is a depravity of the mind.’ It is thus that I, Lord, understand Dhamma taught by the Lord: ‘Greed is a depravity of the mind, aversion is a depravity of the mind, confusion is a depravity of the mind.’ But at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to confusion, taking hold of my mind, persist. It occurred to me thus, Lord: ‘Now what can be the quality in me, not got rid of subjectively, on account of which at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to confusion, taking hold of my mind, persist?’”
“Indeed there is a quality in you, Mahānāma, not got rid of subjectively, on account of which at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of your mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of your mind, persist, and things belonging to confusion, taking hold of your mind, persist. But this quality could be got rid of subjectively by you, Mahānāma, if you would not dwell in a house, if you would not enjoy pleasures of the senses. But inasmuch as this quality, Mahānāma, is not got rid of by you subjectively, therefore you dwell in a house and enjoy pleasures of the senses. Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.
Yet if this, Mahānāma, comes to be well seen as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom by an ariyan disciple, but if he does not come to rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, or to something better than that, then he is not yet one unseduced by pleasures of the senses. But when, Mahānāma, an ariyan disciple thinks: ‘Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.’ and if this comes to be well seen, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom by the ariyan disciple, and if he comes to rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, and to something better than that, then he is one who is not seduced by pleasures of the senses.
And I too, Mahānāma, before my awakening while I was still the bodhisatta, not fully awakened, thought: ‘Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.’ and although this came to be well seen thus, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom, I came to no rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, nor to anything better than that. So I was conscious that I was not yet one unseduced by pleasures of the senses. But when, Mahānāma, I thought: ‘Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.’ and when this was well seen thus, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom, and I came to rapture and joy apart from the pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, and to something better than that, then was I conscious that I was one not seduced by pleasures of the senses.
And what, Mahānāma, is the satisfaction in pleasures of the senses? These five, Mahānāma, are the strands of sense-pleasures. What five? Material shapes cognisable by the eye, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Sounds cognisable by the ear, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Smells cognisable by the nose, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Tastes cognisable by the tongue, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Touches cognisable by the body, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. These, Mahānāma, are the five strands of sense-pleasures. Whatever pleasure, whatever happiness arises in consequence of these five strands of sense-pleasures, this is the satisfaction in sense-pleasures.
And what, Mahānāma, is the peril in sense-pleasures? In this case, Mahānāma, a young man of family earns his living by some craft, such as reckoning on the fingers, such as calculation, such as computing, such as agriculture, such as being in a rajah’s service, such as by another craft. He is afflicted by the cold, he is afflicted by the heat, suffering from the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, creeping things, dying of hunger and thirst. This, Mahānāma, is a peril in pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
If, Mahānāma, this young man of family rouses himself, exerts himself, strives thus, but if these possessions do not come to his hand, he grieves, mourns, laments, beating his breast and wailing, he falls into disillusionment, and thinks: ‘Indeed my exertion is vain, indeed my striving is fruitless.’ This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
If, Mahānāma, this young man of family rouses himself, exerts himself, strives thus, and these possessions come to his hand, he experiences suffering and sorrow in consequence of looking after them, and thinks: ‘Now by what means may neither kings nor thieves take away my possessions, nor fire burn them, nor water carry them away, nor heirs whom I do not like take them away?’ Although he looks after these possessions and guards them, kings do take them away or thieves take them away, or fire burns them or water carries them away, or heirs whom he does not like take them away. He grieves, mourns, laments, beating his breast and wailing, he falls into disillusionment, and thinks: ‘I do not even have that which was mine.’ This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
And again, Mahānāma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, kings dispute with kings, nobles dispute with nobles, brahmans dispute with brahmans, householders dispute with householders, a mother disputes with her son, a son disputes with his mother, a father disputes with his son, a son disputes with his father, a brother disputes with a brother, a brother disputes with a sister, a sister disputes with a brother, a friend disputes with a friend. Those who enter into quarrel, contention, dispute and attack one another with their hands and with stones and with sticks and with weapons, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
And again, Mahānāma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, having taken sword and shield, having girded on bow and quiver, both sides mass for battle and arrows are hurled and knives are hurled and swords are flashing. These who wound with arrows and wound with knives and decapitate with their swords, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
And again, Mahānāma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, having taken sword and shield, having girded on bow and quiver, they leap on to the newly daubed ramparts, and arrows are hurled and knives are hurled and swords are flashing. Those who wound with arrows and wound with knives and pour boiling cow-dung over them and crush them with the (falling) portcullis and decapitate them with their swords, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
And again, Mahānāma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, they break into a house and carry off the booty and behave as a thief and wait in ambush and go to other men’s wives. Kings, having arrested such a one, deal out various punishments. They lash him with whips and they lash him with canes and they lash him with (birch) rods, and they cut off his hand, and they cut off his foot, and they cut off his hand and foot, and they cut off his ear, and they cut off his nose, and they cut off his ear and nose, and they give him the ‘gruel-pot’ punishment, and they give him the ‘shell-tonsure’ punishment, and they give him the ‘Rahu’s mouth.’ punishment, and they give him the ‘fire-garland’ punishment, and they give him the ‘flaming hand’ punishment, and they give him the ‘hay-twist’ punishment, and they give him the ‘bark-dress’ punishment, and they give him the ‘antelope’ punishment, and they give him the ‘flesh-hooking’ punishment, and they give him the ‘disc-slice’ punishment, and they give him the ‘pickling process’ punishment, and they give him the ‘circling the pin.’ punishment, and they give him the ‘straw mattress.’ punishment, and they spray him with boiling oil, give him as food to the dogs, impale him alive on stakes and decapitate him with a sword. This too, Mahānāma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.
And again, Mahānāma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, they behave wrongly in body, they behave wrongly in speech, they behave wrongly in thought. These, having behaved wrongly in body, in speech, in thought, at the breaking up of the body after dying, arise in a sorrowful state, a bad bourn, the abyss, Niraya Hell. สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่นิโครธาราม เขตนครกบิลพัสดุ์ แคว้นสักกะ ครั้งนั้น เจ้าศากยะทรงพระนามว่ามหานามะ เสด็จเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วประทับนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต ข้าพระองค์เข้าใจธรรมที่พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงแสดงมานานแล้วอย่างนี้ว่า โลภะเป็นอุปกิเลสแห่งจิต โทสะเป็นอุปกิเลสแห่งจิต โมหะเป็นอุปกิเลสแห่งจิต ก็เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น เหตุใด บางครั้งบางคราว โลภธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้ โทสธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้ โมหธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้ ข้าพระองค์เกิดความคิดขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า ธรรมอะไรเล่า ที่ข้าพระองค์ยังละไม่ได้เด็ดขาดในภายใน อันเป็นเหตุให้บางครั้งบางคราว โลภธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้ โทสธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้ โมหธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของข้าพระองค์ไว้ได้.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า มหานามะ ธรรมนั้นนั่นแหละ (โลภะ โทสะ โมหะ) ที่ท่านยังละไม่ได้เด็ดขาดในภายใน อันเป็นเหตุให้บางครั้งบางคราว โลภธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของท่านไว้ได้ โทสธรรมยังครอบงำจิตของท่านไว้ได้ โมหธรรมก็ดียังครอบงำจิตของท่านไว้ได้ มหานามะ ถ้าธรรมนั้นเป็นอันท่านละได้เด็ดขาดในภายในแล้ว ท่านก็จะไม่อยู่ครองเรือน ไม่บริโภคกาม แต่เพราะท่านละธรรมเช่นนั้นยังไม่ได้เด็ดขาดในภายใน ดังนั้น ท่านจึงยังอยู่ครองเรือน จึงยังบริโภคกาม.
มหานามะ แม้หากอริยสาวกเห็นด้วยปัญญาอันถูกต้องตามความเป็นจริงว่า กามทั้งหลายให้ความยินดีน้อย มีทุกข์มาก มีความคับแค้นมาก โทษในกามนั้นยิ่งนัก ดังนี้แล้วก็ตาม แต่อริยสาวกนั้น ยังไม่ได้บรรลุปีติและสุข อันเว้นจากกาม เว้นจากอกุศลธรรม หรือไม่ได้บรรลุธรรมอื่นที่สงบกว่านั้น เมื่อนั้น เธอก็จะยังเป็นผู้เวียนกลับมาในกามทั้งหลายได้อีก แต่เมื่อใด อริยสาวกเห็นด้วยปัญญาอันถูกต้องตามความเป็นจริงว่า กามทั้งหลายให้ความยินดีน้อย มีทุกข์มาก มีความคับแค้นมาก โทษในกามนั้นยิ่งนัก ดังนี้ และอริยสาวกนั้น ได้บรรลุปีติและสุข อันเว้นจากกาม เว้นจากอกุศลธรรม หรือได้บรรลุธรรมอื่นที่สงบกว่านั้น เมื่อนั้น เธอย่อมเป็นผู้ไม่เวียนกลับมาในกามทั้งหลายอีก.
มหานามะ แม้เราเอง เมื่อยังไม่ได้ตรัสรู้ ก่อนการตรัสรู้ ยังเป็นโพธิสัตว์อยู่ ก็เห็นด้วยปัญญาอันถูกต้องตามความเป็นจริงว่า กามทั้งหลายให้ความยินดีน้อย มีทุกข์มาก มีความคับแค้นมาก โทษในกามนั้นยิ่งนัก ดังนี้แล้วก็ตาม แต่เรายังไม่ได้บรรลุปีติและสุข อันเว้นจากกาม เว้นจากอกุศลธรรม หรือไม่ได้บรรลุธรรมอื่นที่สงบกว่านั้น เมื่อนั้น เราจึงปฏิญาณไม่ได้ว่า เราเป็นผู้ไม่เวียนกลับมาในกามทั้งหลายอีก แต่เมื่อใด เราเห็นด้วยปัญญาอันถูกต้องตามความเป็นจริงว่า กามทั้งหลายให้ความยินดีน้อย มีทุกข์มาก มีความคับแค้นมาก โทษในกามนั้นยิ่งนัก ดังนี้ และเราก็ได้บรรลุปีติและสุข อันเว้นจากกาม เว้นจากอกุศลธรรม หรือได้บรรลุธรรมอื่นที่สงบกว่านั้น เมื่อนั้น เราจึงปฏิญาณได้ว่า เราเป็นผู้ไม่เวียนกลับมาในกามทั้งหลายอีก.
มหานามะ ก็อะไรเล่าเป็นอัสสาทะ (คุณ) ของกามทั้งหลาย มหานาม กามคุณ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ รูปที่รู้ได้ด้วยตา อันน่าปรารถนา น่ารักใคร่ น่าพอใจ มีลักษณะน่ารัก เป็นที่อาศัยแห่งความใคร่ เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความกำหนัด เสียงที่รู้ได้ด้วยหู … กลิ่นที่รู้ได้ด้วยจมูก … รสที่รู้ได้ด้วยลิ้น … โผฏฐัพพะที่รู้ได้ด้วยกาย อันน่าปรารถนา น่ารักใคร่ น่าพอใจ มีลักษณะน่ารัก เป็นที่อาศัยแห่งความใคร่ เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความกำหนัด มหานามะ เหล่านี้แลกามคุณ ๕ ประการ มหานามะ ความสุข ความโสมนัสใด อาศัยกามคุณ ๕ เหล่านี้เกิดขึ้น นี้เป็นอัสสาทะของกามทั้งหลาย.
มหานามะ ก็อะไรเล่าเป็นอาทีนวะ (โทษ) ของกามทั้งหลาย มหานามะ กุลบุตรในกรณีนี้ เลี้ยงชีวิตด้วยความขยันในการประกอบศิลปะอย่างใดๆ เช่น ด้วยการนับคะแนน ด้วยการคำนวณ ด้วยการนับจำนวน ด้วยการไถ (กสิกรรม) ด้วยการค้าขาย (วาณิชกรรม) ด้วยการเลี้ยงโค (โครักขกรรม) ด้วยการใช้ศาสตรา1 ด้วยการเป็นราชบุรุษ หรือด้วยศิลปะอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ต้องตรากตรำกับความหนาว ต้องตรากตรำกับความร้อน ต้องลำบากอยู่ด้วยสัมผัสอันเกิดจากเหลือบ ยุง ลม แดด และสัตว์เลื้อยคลาน หรือต้องตายเพราะความหิว ความกระหาย มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ ถ้าเมื่อกุลบุตรนั้น ขยัน สืบต่อ พยายามอยู่อย่างนั้น โภคะเหล่านั้นก็ไม่สำเร็จผล เขาย่อมเศร้าโศก ลำบากใจ ร่ำไรรำพัน ทุบอก คร่ำครวญ ถึงความหลงเพ้อว่า ความขยันของเราเป็นโมฆะหนอ ความพยายามของเราไม่มีผลหนอ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ ถ้าเมื่อกุลบุตรนั้น ขยัน สืบต่อ พยายามอยู่อย่างนั้น โภคะเหล่านั้นก็สำเร็จผล แต่เขาก็ยังได้รับทุกขโทมนัส เพราะการคอยรักษาโภคะเหล่านั้นเป็นตัวบังคับว่า ทำอย่างไร พระราชาทั้งหลายจะไม่ริบโภคะเหล่านั้นไป พวกโจรจะไม่ปล้นเอาไป ไฟจะไม่ไหม้ น้ำจะไม่พัดไป ทายาทอันไม่เป็นที่รักจะไม่แย่งไป เมื่อกุลบุตรนั้นคอยรักษาคุ้มครองอยู่อย่างนี้ พระราชาทั้งหลายริบโภคะเหล่านั้นไป หรือโจรปล้นเอาไป หรือไฟไหม้เสีย หรือน้ำพัดไป หรือทายาทอันไม่เป็นที่รักแย่งไป เขาย่อมเศร้าโศก ลำบากใจ ร่ำไรรำพัน ทุบอก คร่ำครวญ ถึงความหลงเพ้อว่า สิ่งใดที่เคยเป็นของเรา สิ่งนั้นก็ไม่ได้เป็นของเราแล้วหนอ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ โทษอื่นยังมีอีก ที่มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายนั่นเอง คือ ข้อที่พวกพระราชาก็วิวาทกันกับพวกพระราชา พวกกษัตริย์ก็วิวาทกันกับพวกกษัตริย์ พวกพราหมณ์ก็วิวาทกันกับพวกพราหมณ์ พวกคหบดีก็วิวาทกันกับพวกคหบดี มารดาก็วิวาทกันกับบุตร บุตรก็วิวาทกันกับมารดา บิดาก็วิวาทกันกับบุตร บุตรก็วิวาทกันกับบิดา พี่ชายน้องชายก็วิวาทกันกับพี่ชายน้องชาย พี่ชายน้องชายก็วิวาทกันกับพี่สาวน้องสาว พี่สาวน้องสาวก็วิวาทกันกับพี่ชายน้องชาย2 สหายก็วิวาทกันกับสหาย เขาเหล่านั้นต่างถึงการทะเลาะ แก่งแย่ง วิวาทกัน ทำร้ายซึ่งกันและกันด้วยฝ่ามือบ้าง ด้วยก้อนดินบ้าง ด้วยท่อนไม้บ้าง ด้วยศาสตราบ้าง ถึงความตายไปบ้าง ได้รับทุกข์ปางตายบ้างอยู่ในที่นั้นๆ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ โทษอื่นยังมีอีก ที่มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายนั่นเอง คือ คนทั้งหลายต่างถือดาบและโล่ห์ สอดแล่งธนู วิ่งเข้าสู่สงคราม ปะทะกันทั้ง ๒ ฝ่าย เมื่อลูกศรทั้งหลายถูกยิงไปบ้าง เมื่อหอกทั้งหลายถูกพุ่งไปบ้าง เมื่อดาบทั้งหลายถูกกวัดแกว่งอยู่บ้าง คนเหล่านั้นต่างก็ถูกลูกศรแทงบ้าง ถูกหอกแทงบ้าง ถูกดาบตัดศีรษะบ้าง ถึงความตายไปบ้าง ได้รับทุกข์ปางตายบ้างอยู่ในที่นั้นๆ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ โทษอื่นยังมีอีก ที่มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายนั่นเอง คือ คนทั้งหลายต่างถือดาบและโล่ห์ สอดแล่งธนู กรูกันเข้าไปสู่เชิงกำแพงที่ฉาบด้วยเปือกตมร้อน เมื่อลูกศรถูกยิงไปบ้าง เมื่อหอกถูกพุ่งไปบ้าง เมื่อดาบถูกกวัดแกว่งอยู่บ้าง คนเหล่านั้นต่างถูกลูกศรแทงบ้าง ถูกหอกแทงบ้าง ถูกราดด้วยโคมัยร้อนๆ บ้าง ถูกสับด้วยคราดบ้าง ถูกตัดศีรษะด้วยดาบบ้าง ถึงความตายไปบ้าง ได้รับทุกข์ปางตายบ้างอยู่ในที่นั้นๆ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานามะ โทษอื่นยังมีอีก ที่มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายนั่นเอง คือ ชนทั้งหลายตัดช่อง (ย่องเบา) บ้าง ปล้นใหญ่ (ปล้นทั้งหมู่บ้าน) บ้าง ทำการปล้นเรือนหลังเดียวบ้าง ดักปล้นอยู่ในทางเปลี่ยวบ้าง คบหาภรรยาของผู้อื่นบ้าง พระราชาทั้งหลายจับคนๆ นั้นได้แล้ว ให้ทำการลงโทษแบบต่างๆ คือ เฆี่ยนด้วยแส้บ้าง เฆี่ยนด้วยหวายบ้าง ทุบด้วยท่อนไม้บ้าง ตัดมือบ้าง ตัดเท้าบ้าง ตัดทั้งมือและเท้าบ้าง ตัดหูบ้าง ตัดจมูกบ้าง ตัดทั้งหูและจมูกบ้าง ลงโทษด้วยวิธีหม้อเคี่ยวน้ำส้มบ้าง ด้วยวิธีขอดสังข์บ้าง ด้วยวิธีปากราหูบ้าง ด้วยวิธีมาลัยบ้าง ด้วยวิธีคบมือบ้าง ด้วยวิธีริ้วส่ายบ้าง ด้วยวิธีนุ่งเปลือกไม้บ้าง ด้วยวิธียืนกวางบ้าง ด้วยวิธีกระชากเนื้อด้วยเบ็ดบ้าง ด้วยวิธีเหรียญกษาปณ์บ้าง ด้วยวิธีแปรงแสบบ้าง ด้วยวิธีกางเวียนบ้าง ด้วยวิธีตั่งฟางบ้าง ราดด้วยน้ำมันร้อนๆ บ้าง ให้สุนัขกัดกินบ้าง เสียบด้วยหลาวทั้งเป็นๆ บ้าง ใช้ดาบตัดศีรษะบ้าง คนเหล่านั้นถึงความตายไปบ้าง ได้รับทุกข์ปางตายบ้างอยู่ในที่นั้นๆ มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น.
มหานาม โทษอื่นยังมีอีก ที่มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายนั่นเอง ชนทั้งหลายประพฤติกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ชนเหล่านั้น ครั้นประพฤติกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริตแล้ว ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก มหานามะ แม้นี้ก็เป็นโทษของกามทั้งหลาย เป็นกองทุกข์ที่เห็นได้เองว่า มีกามเป็นเหตุ มีกามเป็นต้นเค้า มีกามเป็นตัวบังคับ เกิดเพราะเหตุแห่งกามทั้งหลายทั้งนั้น. …
