มาร
สิ่งที่พระองค์ตรัสรู้ แต่ไม่ได้นำมาบอกสอนนั้นมีมาก เพราะไม่เป็นไปเพื่อนิพพาน
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่ป่าสีสปา เขตเมืองโกสัมพี ครั้งนั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคทรงกำใบสีสปา ที่ร่วงอยู่ตามพื้นดินขึ้นมาหน่อยหนึ่งแล้วตรัสถามแก่ภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายเข้าใจความข้อนี้ว่าอย่างไร ใบสีสปาที่เรากำขึ้นมาหน่อยหนึ่งนี้ กับใบสีสปาที่ยังอยู่บนต้นสีสปาเหล่านั้น ส่วนไหนจะมากกว่ากัน.
ภันเต ใบสีสปาที่พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงกำขึ้นหน่อยหนึ่งนั้นเป็นของน้อย ส่วนใบสีสปาที่ยังอยู่บนต้นสีสปาเหล่านั้นย่อมมีมาก.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สิ่งที่เรารู้ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งแล้วไม่กล่าวสอนนั้น มีมากกว่าส่วนที่นำมากล่าวสอน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะเหตุใดเราจึงไม่กล่าวสอนสิ่งเหล่านั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะว่าสิ่งเหล่านั้น ไม่ประกอบด้วยประโยชน์ ไม่เป็นเงื่อนต้นแห่งพรหมจรรย์ ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความเบื่อหน่าย ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความคลายกำหนัด ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความดับ ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความสงบ ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความรู้ยิ่ง ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อความรู้พร้อม ไม่เป็นไปเพื่อนิพพาน ดังนั้น เราจึงไม่กล่าวสอน.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สิ่งใดเล่า เป็นสิ่งที่เรากล่าวสอน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สิ่งที่เรากล่าวสอน คือ ทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ เหตุให้เกิดทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับของทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ ข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะเหตุใดเราจึงกล่าวสอนสิ่งเหล่านี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะว่าสิ่งเหล่านี้ ประกอบด้วยประโยชน์ เป็นเงื่อนต้นแห่งพรหมจรรย์ เป็นไปเพื่อความเบื่อหน่าย เป็นไปเพื่อความคลายกำหนัด เป็นไปเพื่อความดับ เป็นไปเพื่อความสงบ เป็นไปเพื่อความรู้ยิ่ง เป็นไปเพื่อความรู้พร้อม เป็นไปเพื่อนิพพาน ดังนั้น เราจึงนำมากล่าวสอน.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะเหตุนั้นในเรื่องนี้ พวกเธอพึงทำความเพียรเพื่อให้รู้ตามความเป็นจริงว่า ทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ เหตุให้เกิดทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับของทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ และข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์เป็นอย่างนี้ ดังนี้เถิด.

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระวิหารเวฬุวันกลันทกนิวาปสถาน เขตพระนครราชคฤห์ ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระสมิทธิเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ … ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต ที่กล่าวกันว่า มาร มาร ดังนี้ ภันเต ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ จึงกล่าวว่ามาร หรือการบัญญัติว่ามาร.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า สมิทธิ ตา รูป จักษุวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยจักษุวิญญาณมีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น หู เสียง โสตวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยโสตวิญญาณมีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น จมูก กลิ่น ฆานวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยฆานวิญญาณมีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น ลิ้น รส ชิวหาวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยชิวหาวิญญาณมีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น กาย โผฏฐัพพะ กายวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยกายวิญญาณมีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น ใจ ธรรม มโนวิญญาณ ธรรมที่รู้แจ้งได้ด้วยมโนวิญญาณ มีในที่ใด มารหรือการบัญญัติว่ามารย่อมมีในที่นั้น.

เมื่อขันธ์ ๕ มีอยู่ มารจึงมี
เรื่องเกิดที่พระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระราธะได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีภาคว่า
ภันเต ที่กล่าวกันว่า มาร มาร ดังนี้ ภันเต ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ จึงกล่าวว่ามาร.
ราธะ เมื่อรูปมีอยู่ มารจึงมี ผู้ทำให้ตายจึงมี ผู้ตายจึงมี ราธะ เพราะเหตุนั้นแหละ เธอจงพิจารณาเห็นรูปว่า เป็นมาร เป็นผู้ทำให้ตาย เป็นผู้ตาย เป็นดังโรค เป็นดังหัวฝี เป็นดังลูกศร เป็นของทนได้ยาก เป็นเหตุเกิดของความทนได้ยาก บุคคลเหล่าใดพิจารณาเห็นรูปนั้นอย่างนี้ บุคคลเหล่านั้นชื่อว่า ย่อมเห็นโดยถูกต้อง เมื่อเวทนามีอยู่ … เมื่อสัญญามีอยู่ … เมื่อสังขารมีอยู่ … เมื่อวิญญาณมีอยู่ มารจึงมี ผู้ทำให้ตายจึงมี ผู้ตายจึงมี ราธะ เพราะเหตุนั้นแหละ เธอจงพิจารณาเห็นวิญญาณว่า เป็นมาร เป็นผู้ทำให้ตาย เป็นผู้ตาย เป็นดังโรค เป็นดังหัวฝี เป็นดังลูกศร เป็นของทนได้ยาก เป็นเหตุเกิดของความทนได้ยาก บุคคลเหล่าใดพิจารณาเห็นวิญญาณนั้นอย่างนี้ บุคคลเหล่านั้นชื่อว่า ย่อมเห็นโดยถูกต้อง.
ภันเต ก็การเห็นโดยถูกต้องมีประโยชน์อย่างไร.
ราธะ การเห็นโดยถูกต้อง มีประโยชน์เพื่อความเบื่อหน่าย.
ภันเต ก็ความเบื่อหน่ายมีประโยชน์อย่างไร.
ราธะ ความเบื่อหน่าย มีประโยชน์เพื่อความคลายกำหนัด.
ภันเต ก็ความคลายกำหนัดมีประโยชน์อย่างไร
ราธะ ความคลายกำหนัด มีประโยชน์เพื่อหลุดพ้น.
ภันเต ก็ความหลุดพ้นมีประโยชน์อย่างไร .
ราธะ ความหลุดพ้น มีประโยชน์เพื่อนิพพาน.
ภันเต ก็นิพพานเล่ามีประโยชน์อย่างไร .
ราธะ เธอได้ถามเลยปัญหาไปเสียแล้ว เธอไม่อาจจะถือเอาที่สุดของปัญหาได้ ราธะ ก็พรหมจรรย์ที่ประพฤติกันอยู่นี้ หยั่งลงสู่นิพพาน มีนิพพานเป็นที่สุด.

ราธะ รูปเป็นมาร เวทนาเป็นมาร สัญญาเป็นมาร สังขารเป็นมาร วิญญาณเป็นมาร.
ราธะ อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้ว เห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในรูป ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในเวทนา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสัญญา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสังขาร ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในวิญญาณ เมื่อเบื่อหน่าย ย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัด ย่อมหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่า หลุดพ้นแล้ว เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่ต้องทำเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้ไม่ได้มีอีก.

ภันเต ที่กล่าวกันว่า มารธรรม มารธรรม ดังนี้ ภันเต ก็มารธรรมเป็นอย่างไรหนอ.
ราธะ รูปเป็นมารธรรม เวทนาเป็นมารธรรม สัญญาเป็นมารธรรม สังขารเป็นมารธรม วิญญาณเป็นมารธรรม.

บุคคลเมื่อยังยึดมั่นอยู่ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลว่า
สาธุ ภันเต ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดแสดงธรรมโดยย่อแก่ข้าพระองค์ ซึ่งเมื่อข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังแล้ว จะเป็นผู้หลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่เถิด.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุ บุคคลเมื่อยังยึดมั่นอยู่ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร.
ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว ข้าแต่พระสุคต ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว.
ภิกษุ ก็เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างไร.
ภันเต บุคคลเมื่อยังยึดมั่นรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภันเต ข้าพระองค์รู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้.
สาธุ สาธุ ภิกษุ ภิกษุ เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้ ถูกต้องแล้วว่า บุคคลเมื่อยังยึดมั่นรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยึดมั่นวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยึดมั่น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภิกษุ เธอพึงรู้ทั่งถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้แล.
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปนั้นชื่นชม ยินดีภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาค ลุกจากอาสนะ ถวายอภิวาท กระทำประทักษิณแล้วหลีกไป ต่อมา ภิกษุนั้นหลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่ ไม่ช้าก็กระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งที่สุดแห่งพรหมจรรย์อันไม่มีอะไรอื่นยิ่งกว่า อันเป็นประโยชน์ที่ต้องการของกุลบุตรทั้งหลาย ผู้ออกจากเรือนบวชเป็นบรรพชิตโดยชอบ ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่ รู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่จะต้องทำเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มี ก็แลภิกษุนั้นได้เป็นพระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งในจำนวนพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย.

เรื่องเกิดขึ้นที่พระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลว่า
สาธุ ภันเต ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดแสดงธรรมโดยย่อแก่ข้าพระองค์ ซึ่งเมื่อข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังแล้ว จะเป็นผู้หลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่เถิด.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุ บุคคลเมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายอยู่ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร.
ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว ข้าแต่พระสุคต ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว.
ภิกษุ ก็เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างไร.
ภันเต บุคคลเมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภันเต ข้าพระองค์รู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้.
สาธุ สาธุ ภิกษุ ภิกษุ เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้ ถูกต้องแล้วว่า บุคคลเมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังสำคัญมั่นหมายวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่สำคัญมั่นหมาย ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภิกษุ เธอพึงรู้ทั่งถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้แล.
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปนั้นชื่นชม ยินดีภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาค ลุกจากอาสนะ ถวายอภิวาท กระทำประทักษิณแล้วหลีกไป ต่อมา ภิกษุนั้นหลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่ ไม่ช้าก็กระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งที่สุดแห่งพรหมจรรย์อันไม่มีอะไรอื่นยิ่งกว่า อันเป็นประโยชน์ที่ต้องการของกุลบุตรทั้งหลาย ผู้ออกจากเรือนบวชเป็นบรรพชิตโดยชอบ ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่ รู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่จะต้องทำเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มี ก็แลภิกษุนั้นได้เป็นพระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งในจำนวนพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย.

เรื่องเกิดขึ้นที่พระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลว่า
สาธุ ภันเต ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดแสดงธรรมโดยย่อแก่ข้าพระองค์ ซึ่งเมื่อข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังแล้ว จะเป็นผู้หลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่เถิด.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุ บุคคลเมื่อยังเพลิดเพลินอยู่ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่เพลิดเพลิน ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร.
ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว ข้าแต่พระสุคต ข้าพระองค์ทราบแล้ว.
ภิกษุ ก็เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างไร.
ภันเต บุคคลเมื่อยังยินดีรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภันเต ข้าพระองค์รู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้.
สาธุ สาธุ ภิกษุ ภิกษุ เธอรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้ ถูกต้องแล้วว่า บุคคลเมื่อยังยินดีรูป ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีเวทนา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีสัญญา ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีสังขาร ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร เมื่อยังยินดีวิญญาณ ย่อมถูกมารผูกมัดไว้ เมื่อไม่ยินดี ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากมาร ภิกษุ เธอพึงรู้ทั่งถึงเนื้อความแห่งภาษิต ที่เรากล่าวแล้วโดยย่อ ได้โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้แล.
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปนั้นชื่นชม ยินดีภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาค ลุกจากอาสนะ ถวายอภิวาท กระทำประทักษิณแล้วหลีกไป ต่อมา ภิกษุนั้นหลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมนั้นอยู่ ไม่ช้าก็กระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งที่สุดแห่งพรหมจรรย์อันไม่มีอะไรอื่นยิ่งกว่า อันเป็นประโยชน์ที่ต้องการของกุลบุตรทั้งหลาย ผู้ออกจากเรือนบวชเป็นบรรพชิตโดยชอบ ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่ รู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่จะต้องทำเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มี ก็แลภิกษุนั้นได้เป็นพระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งในจำนวนพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย.

เมื่อเจริญกายคตาสติ มารย่อมไม่ได้ช่อง มารย่อมไม่ได้โอกาส
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุมากด้วยกันกลับจากบิณฑบาต ภายหลังเวลาอาหารแล้ว นั่งประชุมกันในอุปัฏฐานศาลา เกิดข้อสนทนากันขึ้นในระหว่างดังนี้ว่า
อาวุโสทั้งหลาย ข้อนี้น่าอัศจรรย์ ข้อนี้ไม่เคยมีมาก่อน ที่พระผู้มีพระภาค ผู้ทรงรู้ ทรงเห็น เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธะพระองค์นั้น ได้ตรัสกายคตาสติที่เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้วว่า มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก ข้อสนทนากันในระหว่างของภิกษุเหล่านั้น ค้างอยู่เพียงเท่านี้.
ครั้งนั้นในเวลาเย็น พระผู้มีพระภาคเสด็จออกจากสถานที่หลีกเร้น เสด็จเข้าไปยังอุปัฏฐานศาลานั้น ครั้นแล้วจึงประทับนั่ง ณ อาสนะที่เขาปูลาดไว้ แล้วได้รับสั่งเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาตรัสว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บัดนี้ พวกเธอ นั่งประชุมสนทนาเรื่องอะไรกัน และพวกเธอสนทนาเรื่องอะไรค้างไว้.
ภันเต ในกรณีนี้ พวกข้าพระองค์กลับจากบิณฑบาต ภายหลังเวลาอาหารแล้ว นั่งประชุมกันในอุปัฏฐานศาลา เกิดข้อสนทนากันขึ้นในระหว่างดังนี้ว่า อาวุโสทั้งหลาย ข้อนี้น่าอัศจรรย์ ข้อนี้ไม่เคยมีมาก่อน ที่พระผู้มีพระภาค ผู้ทรงรู้ ทรงเห็น เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธะพระองค์นั้น ได้ตรัสกายคตาสติที่เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้วว่า มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก ภันเต ข้อสนทนากันในระหว่างของพวกข้าพระองค์ได้ค้างอยู่เพียงเท่านี้ พอดีพระผู้มีพระภาคก็เสด็จมาถึง.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็กายคตาสติที่เจริญแล้วอย่างไร กระทำให้มากแล้วอย่างไร จึงมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ อยู่ในป่าก็ดี อยู่ที่โคนไม้ หรืออยู่ที่เรือนว่างก็ดี นั่งคู้ขาเข้ามาโดยรอบ ตั้งกายตรง ดำรงสติเฉพาะหน้า เธอนั้น มีสติหายใจเข้า มีสติหายใจออก เมื่อหายใจเข้ายาวก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจเข้ายาว เมื่อหายใจออกยาวก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจออกยาว เมื่อหายใจเข้าสั้นก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจเข้าสั้น เมื่อหายใจออกสั้นก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจออกสั้น ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งกายทั้งปวงหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งกายทั้งปวงหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำกายสังขารให้ระงับหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำกายสังขารให้ระงับหายใจออก เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเมื่อเดินอยู่ ก็รู้ชัดว่าเดินอยู่ หรือเมื่อยืนอยู่ ก็รู้ชัดว่ายืนอยู่ หรือเมื่อนั่งอยู่ ก็รู้ชัดว่านั่งอยู่ หรือเมื่อนอนอยู่ ก็รู้ชัดว่านอนอยู่ หรือเธอทรงกายโดยอาการใดๆ อยู่ ก็รู้ชัดว่าทรงกายโดยอาการนั้นๆ อยู่ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุย่อมเป็นผู้มีความรู้สึกตัวในการก้าวไป การถอยกลับ การแลดู การเหลียวดู การงอเข้า การเหยียดออก การทรงสังฆาฏิ บาตร จีวร การกิน การดื่ม การเคี้ยว การลิ้ม การถ่ายอุจจาระ การถ่ายปัสสาวะ การไป การหยุด การนั่ง การนอน การหลับ การตื่น การพูด การนิ่ง เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุย่อมพิจารณาเห็นกายนี้นั่นแหละ ตั้งแต่พื้นเท้าขึ้นไปสู่เบื้องบน ตั้งแต่ปลายผมลงมาสู่เบื้องล่าง มีหนังหุ้มอยู่โดยรอบ เต็มไปด้วยของไม่สะอาด มีประการต่างๆ ว่า ในกายนี้มีผม ขน เล็บ ฟัน หนัง เนื้อ เอ็น กระดูก เยื่อในกระดูก ม้าม เนื้อหัวใจ ตับ พังผืด ไต ปอด ไส้ใหญ่ ไส้น้อย อาหารใหม่ อาหารเก่า (อุจจาระ) น้ำดี เสลด หนอง เลือด เหงื่อ มันข้น น้ำตา มันเหลว น้ำลาย น้ำมูก ไขข้อ มูตร (ปัสสาวะ) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนถุงมีปากทั้ง ๒ ข้าง เต็มไปด้วยธัญญชาตินานาชนิด คือ ข้าวสาลี ข้าวเปลือก ถั่วเขียว ถั่วทอง งา และข้าวสาร บุรุษผู้มีตาดี เปิดถุงนั้นออกแล้วพึงเห็นได้ว่า นี้ข้าวสาลี นี้ข้าวเปลือก นี้ถั่วเขียว นี้ถั่วทอง นี้งา นี้ข้าวสาร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมพิจารณาเห็นกายนี้นั่นแหละ เบื้องบนแต่พื้นเท้าขึ้นไป เบื้องต่ำแต่ปลายผมลงมา มีหนังหุ้มอยู่โดยรอบ เต็มไปด้วยของไม่สะอาด มีประการต่างๆ ว่า ในกายนี้มีผม ขน เล็บ ฟัน หนัง เนื้อ เอ็น กระดูก เยื่อในกระดูก ม้าม เนื้อหัวใจ ตับ พังผืด ไต ปอด ไส้ใหญ่ ไส้น้อย อาหารใหม่ อาหารเก่า ดี เสลด หนอง เลือด เหงื่อ มันข้น น้ำตา มันเหลว น้ำลาย น้ำมูก ไขข้อ มูตร เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุย่อมพิจารณากายนี้แหละ ตามที่ตั้งอยู่ ตามที่ดำรงอยู่ โดยความเป็นธาตุว่า ในกายนี้ มีธาตุดิน ธาตุน้ำ ธาตุไฟ และธาตุลมอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนคนฆ่าโค หรือลูกมือของคนฆ่าโคผู้ชำนาญ ฆ่าโคแล้วนั่งแบ่งอวัยวะเป็นส่วนๆ ใกล้ทางใหญ่ ๔ แยก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมพิจารณาเห็นกายนี้แหละ ตามที่ตั้งอยู่ ตามที่ดำรงอยู่ โดยความเป็นธาตุว่า ในกายนี้ มีธาตุดิน ธาตุน้ำ ธาตุไฟ และธาตุลมอยู่ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า ซึ่งตายได้วันหนึ่ง หรือสองวัน หรือสามวัน ที่ขึ้นอืด เขียวช้ำ มีน้ำเหลืองไหลเยิ้ม จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า อันฝูงกาจิกกินอยู่บ้าง ฝูงแร้งจิกกินอยู่บ้าง ฝูงนกตะกรุมจิกกินอยู่บ้าง ฝูงสุนัขบ้านกัดกินอยู่บ้าง ฝูงสุนัขป่ากัดกินอยู่บ้าง สัตว์เล็กสัตว์น้อยนานาชนิดกัดกินอยู่บ้าง จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า ยังเป็นโครงกระดูก มีทั้งเนื้อและเลือด มีเส้นเอ็นผูกรัดไว้ จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า ยังเป็นโครงกระดูก ไม่มีเนื้อ มีแต่เลือดเปรอะเปื้อนอยู่ มีเส้นเอ็นผูกรัดไว้ จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า ยังเป็นโครงกระดูก ปราศจากเนื้อและเลือดแล้ว แต่ยังมีเส้นเอ็นผูกรัดไว้ จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า เป็นท่อนกระดูก ไม่มีเส้นเอ็นผูกรัดแล้ว กระจัดกระจายไปตามทิศทางต่างๆ คือ กระดูกมืออยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกเท้าอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกแข้งอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกขาอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกเอวอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกสันหลังอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกซี่โครงอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกหน้าอกอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกแขนอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกไหล่อยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกคออยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกคางอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กระดูกฟันอยู่ทางหนึ่ง กะโหลกศีรษะอยู่ทางหนึ่ง จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า เป็นท่อนกระดูก มีสีขาวเหมือนดังสีสังข์ จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า เป็นท่อนกระดูก เรี่ยรายเป็นกองๆ มีอายุเกินปีหนึ่งขึ้นไป จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเห็นศพที่เขาทิ้งในป่าช้า เป็นกระดูกผุป่นเป็นชิ้นเล็กชิ้นน้อย จึงนำเข้ามาเปรียบเทียบกับกายนี้ว่า แม้กายนี้แล ย่อมเหมือนอย่างนี้เป็นธรรมดา ย่อมมีความเป็นอย่างนี้ ไม่ล่วงพ้นความเป็นอย่างนี้ไปได้ เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตกวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่ เธอทำกายนี้ ให้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยปีติและสุขเกิดจากวิเวก ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ปีติและสุขเกิดจากวิเวกจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนนายช่างอาบ หรือลูกมือของนายช่างอาบผู้ชำนาญ โรยผงสำหรับใช้ถูตัวเวลาอาบน้ำลงในภาชนะสำริด แล้วพรมน้ำให้ติดกันเป็นก้อน ก้อนผงที่มียางซึมออกจับทั่วกันแล้ว ทั้งภายในภายนอก ไม่กระจายออก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมทำกายนี้ ให้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวก ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ปีติและสุขเกิดจากวิเวกจะไม่ถูกต้อง เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเพราะวิตกวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่ เธอทำกายนี้ ให้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนห้วงน้ำลึกมีน้ำพุขึ้น ไม่มีทางระบายน้ำ ทั้งในทิศตะวันออก ทั้งในทิศตะวันตก ทั้งในทิศเหนือ ทั้งในทิศใต้ และถึงฝนยังไม่ตกตามฤดูกาล แต่กระแสน้ำเย็นจะพุขึ้นจากห้วงน้ำนั้น แล้วทำห้วงน้ำนั้นเอง ให้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม ซาบซ่านด้วยน้ำเย็น ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของห้วงน้ำนั้นที่น้ำเย็นจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมทำกายนี้ ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยปีติและสุขอันเกิดจากสมาธิ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ปีติและสุขเกิดจากสมาธิจะไม่ถูกต้อง เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่ เธอทำกายนี้ ให้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยสุขอันปราศจากปีติ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่สุขอันปราศจากปีติจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนหนองบัวอุบล หนองบัวปทุม หนองบัวบุณฑริก มีดอกอุบล ดอกปทุม ดอกบุณฑริก บางเหล่าที่เกิดอยู่ในน้ำ เจริญอยู่ในน้ำ ยังขึ้นไม่พ้นน้ำ จมอยู่ภายใต้อันน้ำเลี้ยงไว้, ดอกบัวเหล่านั้นถูกน้ำเย็นแช่ชุ่ม ถูกต้องตั้งแต่ยอดตลอดราก ส่วนไหนๆ ของดอกบัวเหล่านั้นทั่วทั้งดอก ที่น้ำเย็นไม่ถูกต้องแล้ว ไม่มี ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมทำกายนี้ชุ่มชื่น เอิบอิ่ม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยสุขอันปราศจากปีติ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่สุขอันปราศจากปีติจะไม่ถูกต้อง เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ประการอื่นยังมีอีก ภิกษุเพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่ เธอย่อมเป็นผู้นั่งเอาใจอันบริสุทธิ์ผ่องใสแผ่ไปทั่วกายนี้ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ใจอันบริสุทธิ์ผ่องใสจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษนั่งเอาผ้าขาวคลุมตลอดทั้งศีรษะ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายบุรุษนั้นที่ผ้าขาวจะไม่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุย่อมเป็นผู้นั่งเอาใจอันบริสุทธิ์ผ่องใส แผ่ไปทั่วกายนี้ ไม่มีส่วนไหนๆ ของกายเธอที่ใจอันบริสุทธิ์ผ่องใสจะไม่ถูกต้อง เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมละความระลึก และความดำริอันอาศัยเรือนเสียได้ เพราะละความระลึกและความดำรินั้นได้ จิตของเธอก็ตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดี เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ในภายในนั่นเทียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้อย่างนี้ ภิกษุนั้นก็ชื่อว่า เจริญกายคตาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว กุศลธรรมอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งอันเป็นส่วนวิชชา ย่อมหยั่งลงในภายในของผู้นั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนมหาสมุทรอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งถูกต้องด้วยใจแล้ว แม่น้ำน้อยสายใดสายหนึ่งซึ่งไหลไปสู่สมุทร ย่อมหยั่งลงในภายในของผู้นั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว กุศลธรรมอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งอันเป็นส่วนแห่งวิชชา ย่อมหยั่งลงในภายในของผู้นั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ไม่เจริญ ไม่กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมได้ช่อง มารย่อมได้โอกาส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษเหวี่ยงก้อนศิลาที่หนัก ไปที่กองดินเปียก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร ก้อนศิลาหนักนั้นจะพึงได้ช่อง (จมลง) ในกองดินเปียกนั้นได้ไหม.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ไม่เจริญ ไม่กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมได้ช่อง มารย่อมได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนไม้ที่แห้งสนิท ต่อมา มีบุรุษนำไปทำเป็นไม้สีไฟ ด้วยตั้งใจว่า จะให้เกิดความร้อนและเกิดไฟขึ้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร บุรุษนั้น นำไม้ที่แห้งสนิทนั้น ไปทำเป็นไม้สีไฟแล้วสีกัน จะสามารถให้เกิดความร้อนและเกิดไฟขึ้นได้ไหม.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ไม่เจริญ ไม่กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมได้ช่อง มารย่อมได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนหม้อน้ำที่ว่างเปล่า อันเขาตั้งไว้บนเครื่องรอง ต่อมา มีบุรุษนำเอาหม้อน้ำนั้นไปทำเป็นเครื่องตักน้ำ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร บุรุษนั้นจะพึงตักน้ำได้ไหม.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ไม่เจริญ ไม่กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมได้ช่อง มารย่อมได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมไม่ได้ช่อง มารย่อมไม่ได้โอกาส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษโยนกลุ่มด้ายเบาๆ ลงบนแผ่นกระดานเรียบที่ทำด้วยแก่นไม้ล้วน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร กลุ่มด้ายเบาๆ นั้น จะพึงได้ช่อง (จมลง) บนแผ่นกระดานเรียบ ที่ทำด้วยแก่นไม้ล้วนหรือไม่.
ไม่ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมไม่ได้ช่อง มารย่อมไม่ได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนไม้สดชุ่มด้วยยาง ต่อมา มีบุรุษนำไปทำเป็นไม้สีไฟ ด้วยตั้งใจว่า จะให้เกิดความร้อนและเกิดไฟขึ้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร บุรุษนั้น นำไม้สดที่ชุ่มด้วยยางนั้น ไปทำเป็นไม้สีไฟแล้วสีกัน จะสามารถให้เกิดความร้อนและเกิดไฟขึ้นได้ไหม.
ไม่ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมไม่ได้ช่อง มารย่อมไม่ได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนหม้อน้ำ มีน้ำเต็มเปี่ยมเสมอขอบปาก พอที่กาจะก้มดื่มได้ อันเขาตั้งไว้บนเครื่องรอง ต่อมา มีบุรุษนำเอาหม้อน้ำนั้นไปทำเป็นเครื่องตักน้ำ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร บุรุษนั้นจะพึงตักน้ำได้ไหม.
ไม่ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว มารย่อมไม่ได้ช่อง มารย่อมไม่ได้โอกาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ภิกษุนั้นจะโน้มน้อมจิตไป เพื่อทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ซึ่งธรรมที่ควรทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองใดๆ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนหม้อน้ำ มีน้ำเต็มเปี่ยมเสมอขอบปาก พอที่กาจะก้มดื่มได้ อันเขาตั้งไว้บนเครื่องรอง บุรุษผู้มีกำลังพึงเขย่าหม้อน้ำนั้นโดยวิธีใดๆ น้ำนั้นจะพึงไหลมาโดยวิธีนั้นๆ ได้ไหม

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ภิกษุนั้นจะโน้มน้อมจิตไป เพื่อทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ซึ่งธรรมที่ควรทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองใดๆ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนสระโบกขรณีสี่เหลี่ยม ในภูมิภาคที่ราบอันเขาพูนคันดินไว้ มีน้ำเต็มเปี่ยมเสมอขอบปาก พอที่กาจะก้มดื่มได้ บุรุษผู้มีกำลังเจาะคันดินของสระโบกขรณีนั้นโดยวิธีใดๆ น้ำนั้นจะพึงไหลมาโดยวิธีนั้นๆ ได้ไหม.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ภิกษุนั้นจะโน้มน้อมจิตไป เพื่อทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ซึ่งธรรมที่ควรทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองใดๆ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนรถที่เทียมด้วยม้าอาชาไนย ซึ่งเป็นม้าที่ได้รับการฝึกมาดีแล้ว มีแส้เสียบไว้ในที่ระหว่างม้าทั้ง ๒ เป็นรถที่จอดอยู่บนทางใหญ่ ๔ แพร่ง มีภูมิภาคอันดี นายสารถีผู้เชี่ยวชาญในการฝึกม้า ระดับครูฝึก ผู้ขยันขันแข็ง ขึ้นสู่รถนั้นแล้ว จับสายบังเหียนด้วยมือซ้าย จับแส้ด้วยมือขวา เพียงแค่ยกแส้ขึ้นเป็นสัญญาณ ก็สามารถให้ม้าพารถไปข้างหน้า หรือให้ถอยกลับไปข้างหลัง ได้ตามที่ตนปรารถนา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น กายคตาสติอันใดผู้หนึ่ง เจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ภิกษุนั้นจะโน้มน้อมจิตไป เพื่อทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ซึ่งธรรมที่ควรทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองใดๆ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติ อันบุคคลเสพแล้ว ทำให้เจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ทำให้เป็นดุจยาน ทำให้เป็นที่ตั้ง ประพฤติสั่งสมเนืองๆ ปรารภสม่ำเสมอดีแล้ว พึงหวังอานิสงส์ ๑๐ ประการเหล่านี้ คือ
๑) เป็นผู้อดกลั้นต่อความไม่ยินดีและความยินดีได้ ไม่ถูกความไม่ยินดีครอบงำ ย่อมครอบงำความไม่ยินดีที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วได้.
๒) เป็นผู้อดกลั้นต่อภัยและความหวาดกลัวได้ ไม่ถูกภัยและความหวาดกลัวครอบงำ ย่อมครอบงำภัยและความหวาดกลัวที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วได้.
๓) เป็นผู้อดทนต่อความหนาว ความร้อน ความหิว ความกระหาย เป็นผู้อดทนต่อสัมผัสแห่งเหลือบ ยุง ลม แดด และสัตว์เลื้อยคลานทั้งหลาย เป็นผู้อดทนต่อถ้อยคำอันหยาบคายร้ายแรงต่างๆ เป็นผู้อดทนต่อทุกขเวทนาทางกายที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว อันเป็นทุกข์ กล้าแข็ง เผ็ดร้อน ไม่น่ายินดี ไม่เป็นที่พอใจ แทบทำให้เสียชีวิตได้.
๔) เป็นผู้ได้ตามต้องการ ได้ไม่ยาก ได้ไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ อันเป็นไปในจิตอันยิ่ง เป็นธรรมเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบัน (ทิฏฐธรรมสุขวิหาร).
๕) ย่อมแสดงฤทธิ์ได้หลายประการ คือ คนเดียวแสดงเป็นหลายคนก็ได้ หลายคนแสดงเป็นคนเดียวก็ได้ ทำให้ปรากฏก็ได้ ทำให้หายไปก็ได้ ทะลุฝา ทะลุกำแพง ทะลุภูเขาไปได้ไม่ติดขัด เหมือนไปในที่ว่างก็ได้ ผุดขึ้นหรือดำลงในแผ่นดินเหมือนไปในน้ำก็ได้ เดินบนน้ำไม่แยกเหมือนเดินบนแผ่นดินก็ได้ เหาะไปในอากาศเหมือนนกก็ได้ ลูบคลำพระจันทร์ พระอาทิตย์ ซึ่งมีฤทธิ์ มีอานุภาพมากด้วยฝ่ามือก็ได้ ใช้อำนาจทางกายไปตลอดพรหมโลกก็ได้.
๖) ย่อมได้ยินเสียงทั้ง ๒ ชนิด คือ เสียงทิพย์และเสียงมนุษย์ ทั้งที่ไกลและที่ใกล้ได้ด้วยทิพยโสตธาตุอันบริสุทธิ์ ล่วงโสตของมนุษย์.
๗) ย่อมกำหนดรู้ใจของสัตว์อื่น ของบุคคลอื่นได้ด้วยใจ คือ จิตมีราคะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีราคะ หรือจิตปราศจากราคะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากราคะ จิตมีโทสะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีโทสะ หรือจิตปราศจากโทสะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากโทสะ จิตมีโมหะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีโมหะ หรือจิตปราศจากโมหะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากโมหะ จิตหดหู่ก็รู้ว่าจิตหดหู่ หรือจิตฟุ้งซ่านก็รู้ว่าจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตเป็นมหัคคตะ (ถึงความเป็นใหญ่) ก็รู้ว่าจิตเป็นมหัคคตะ หรือจิตไม่เป็นมหัคคตะก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่เป็นมหัคคตะ จิตมีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่าก็รู้ว่าจิตมีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่า หรือจิตไม่มีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่าก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่มีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่า จิตเป็นสมาธิก็รู้ว่าจิตเป็นสมาธิ หรือจิตไม่เป็นสมาธิก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่เป็นสมาธิ จิตหลุดพ้นก็รู้ว่าจิตหลุดพ้น หรือจิตไม่หลุดพ้นก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่หลุดพ้น.
๘) ย่อมระลึกชาติก่อนได้เป็นอันมาก คือ ระลึกได้ชาติหนึ่งบ้าง สองชาติบ้าง สามชาติบ้าง สี่ชาติบ้าง ห้าชาติบ้าง สิบชาติบ้าง ยี่สิบชาติบ้าง สามสิบชาติบ้าง สี่สิบชาติบ้าง ห้าสิบชาติบ้าง ร้อยชาติบ้าง พันชาติบ้าง แสนชาติบ้าง ตลอดสังวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้าง ตลอดวิวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้าง ตลอดสังวัฏกัปและวิวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้างว่า ในภพโน้นเรามีชื่ออย่างนั้น มีโคตรอย่างนั้น มีผิวพรรณอย่างนั้น มีอาหารอย่างนั้น เสวยสุขและเสวยทุกข์อย่างนั้นๆ มีกำหนดอายุเพียงเท่านั้น ครั้นจุติจากภพนั้นแล้วได้ไปเกิดในภพโน้น แม้ในภพนั้น เราก็ได้มีชื่ออย่างนั้น มีโคตรอย่างนั้น มีผิวพรรณอย่างนั้น มีอาหารอย่างนั้น เสวยสุขและเสวยทุกข์อย่างนั้นๆ มีกำหนดอายุเพียงเท่านั้น ครั้นจุติจากภพนั้นแล้ว ได้มาเกิดในภพนี้ เราพึงระลึกถึงชาติก่อนได้เป็นอันมาก พร้อมทั้งอาการ พร้อมทั้งอุเทศ ด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
๙) ย่อมเห็นหมู่สัตว์ที่กำลังจุติ กำลังอุบัติ เลว ประณีต มีผิวพรรณดี มีผิวพรรณทราม ได้ดี ตกยาก ด้วยทิพยจักษุอันบริสุทธิ์ ล่วงจักษุของมนุษย์ พึงรู้ชัดซึ่งหมู่สัตว์ ผู้เป็นไปตามกรรมว่า สัตว์เหล่านี้ประกอบด้วยกายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ติเตียนพระอริยะ เป็นมิจฉาทิฏฐิ ยึดมั่นการกระทำเพราะอำนาจมิจฉาทิฏฐิ ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย เขาจึงเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก ส่วนสัตว์เหล่านี้ ประกอบด้วยกายสุจริต วจีสุจริต มโนสุจริต ไม่ติเตียนพระอริยะ เป็นสัมมาทิฏฐิ ยึดมั่นการกระทำเพราะอำนาจสัมมาทิฏฐิ ภายหลังจากการตายเพราะกายแตกทำลาย เขาจึงเข้าถึงสุคติโลกสวรรค์ ดังนี้ เราพึงเห็นหมู่สัตว์ที่กำลังจุติ กำลังอุปบัติ เลว ประณีต มีผิวพรรณดี มีผิวพรรณทราม ได้ดี ตกยาก ด้วยทิพยจักษุอันบริสุทธิ์ ล่วงจักษุของมนุษย์ ย่อมทราบชัดซึ่งหมู่สัตว์ผู้เป็นไปตามกรรม ด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
๑๐) ย่อมเข้าถึงเจโตวิมุตติ ปัญญาวิมุตติ อันหาอาสวะมิได้ เพราะอาสวะทั้งหลายสิ้นไป ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายคตาสติ อันบุคคลเสพแล้ว ทำให้เจริญแล้ว ทำให้มากแล้ว ทำให้เป็นดุจยาน ทำให้เป็นที่ตั้ง ประพฤติสั่งสมเนืองๆ ปรารภสม่ำเสมอดีแล้ว พึงหวังอานิสงส์ ๑๐ ประการเหล่านี้ได้ ดังนี้.

ที่ซึ่งมารทำอะไรไม่ได้
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรื่องเคยมีมาแล้ว สงครามระหว่างเทวดากับอสูรได้ประชิดกัน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในสงครามครั้งนั้น พวกอสูรชนะ พวกเทวดาแพ้ และพวกเทวดาที่แพ้ได้พากันหลบหนีมุ่งไปทางทิศเหนือ พวกอสูรได้รุกไล่ติดตามไป ครั้งนั้น พวกเทวดาได้มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า พวกอสูรกำลังรุกไล่ติดตามมา ทางที่ดี เราควรจะทำสงครามกับพวกอสูรอีกเป็นครั้งที่ ๒.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรื่องเคยมีมาแล้ว สงครามระหว่างเทวดากับอสูรได้ประชิดกัน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในสงครามครั้งนั้น พวกเทวดาชนะ พวกอสูรแพ้ และพวกอสูรที่แพ้ได้พากันหลบหนีมุ่งไปทางทิศใต้ พวกเทวดาได้รุกไล่ติดตามไป ครั้งนั้น พวกอสูรได้มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า พวกเทวดากำลังรุกไล่ติดตามมา ทางที่ดี เราควรจะทำสงครามกับพวกเทวดาอีกเป็นครั้งที่ ๒.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกอสูรก็ทำสงครามกับพวกเทวดาอีกเป็นครั้งที่ ๓ แม้ครั้งที่ ๓ พวกเทวดาก็ชนะ พวกอสูรก็แพ้อีก และพวกอสูรที่แพ้ต่างก็กลัว พากันหลบหนีเข้าไปอยู่ในอสูรบุรี ก็แหละ พวกอสูรที่พากันหลบหนีเข้าไปอยู่ในอสูรบุรี ได้มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ พวกเรามีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ พวกเทวดาจะทำอะไรเราไม่ได้ แม้พวกเทวดาก็มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ พวกอสูรมีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ พวกเราจะทำอะไรไม่ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตกวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่ สมัยนั้น ภิกษุมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ เรามีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ มารจะทำอะไรเราไม่ได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้มารผู้มีบาปก็มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ ภิกษุมีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ เราจะทำอะไรไม่ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะวิตกวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่ สมัยนั้น ภิกษุมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ เรามีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ มารจะทำอะไรเราไม่ได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้มารผู้มีบาปก็มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ ภิกษุมีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ เราจะทำอะไรไม่ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่ สมัยนั้น ภิกษุมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ เรามีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ มารจะทำอะไรเราไม่ได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้มารผู้มีบาปก็มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ ภิกษุมีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ เราจะทำอะไรไม่ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่ สมัยนั้น ภิกษุมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ เรามีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ มารจะทำอะไรเราไม่ได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แม้มารผู้มีบาปก็มีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า บัดนี้ ภิกษุมีตนอันถึงแล้วซึ่งที่ต้านทานความขลาดกลัวอยู่ เราจะทำอะไรไม่ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะก้าวล่วงรูปสัญญาเสียได้โดยประการทั้งปวง เพราะความดับไปแห่งปฏิฆสัญญา เพราะการไม่ทำไว้ในใจซึ่งนานัตตสัญญา จึงบรรลุอากาสานัญจายตนะ อันมีการทำในใจว่า อากาศไม่มีที่สุด ดังนี้แล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนี้เรากล่าวว่า ได้ทำมารให้ถึงที่สุด ให้ติดตามไปไม่ได้ ได้ถึงที่ซึ่งดวงตาของมารผู้มีบาปมองไม่เห็น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะก้าวล่วงอากาสานัญจายตนะเสียได้โดยประการทั้งปวง จึงบรรลุวิญญาณัญจายตนะ อันมีการทำในใจว่า วิญญาณไม่มีที่สุด ดังนี้แล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนี้เรากล่าวว่า ได้ทำมารให้ถึงที่สุด ให้ติดตามไปไม่ได้ ได้ถึงที่ซึ่งดวงตาของมารผู้มีบาปมองไม่เห็น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งวิญญาณัญจายตนะโดยประการทั้งปวง จึงบรรลุอากิญจัญญายตนะ อันมีการทำในใจว่า อะไรๆ ไม่มี ดังนี้แล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนี้เรากล่าวว่า ได้ทำมารให้ถึงที่สุด ให้ติดตามไปไม่ได้ ได้ถึงที่ซึ่งดวงตาของมารผู้มีบาปมองไม่เห็น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งอากิญจัญญายตนะโดยประการทั้งปวง จึงบรรลุเนวสัญญานาสัญญายตนะแล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนี้เรากลาวว่า ได้ทำมารให้ถึงที่สุด ให้ติดตามไปไม่ได้ ได้ถึงที่ซึ่งดวงตาของมารผู้มีบาปมองไม่เห็น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด ภิกษุเพราะก้าวล่วงเนวสัญญานาสัญญายตนะเสียได้โดยประการทั้งปวง จึงบรรลุสัญญาเวทยิตนิโรธแล้วแลอยู่ อาสวะของเธอสิ้นสุดไป เพราะเห็นแล้วด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนี้เรากล่าวว่า ได้ทำมารให้ถึงที่สุด ให้ติดตามไปไม่ได้ ได้ถึงที่ซึ่งดวงตาของมารผู้มีบาปมองไม่เห็น ข้ามได้แล้วซึ่งเครื่องติดข้องในโลก ดังนี้.

At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī in a rosewood forest. Then the Buddha picked up a few rosewood leaves in his hand and addressed the mendicants: “What do you think, mendicants? Which is more: the few leaves in my hand, or those in the forest above me?”
“Sir, the few leaves in your hand are a tiny amount. There are far more leaves in the forest above.”
“In the same way, there is much more that I have directly known but have not explained to you. What I have explained is a tiny amount. And why haven’t I explained it? Because it’s not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesn’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. That’s why I haven’t explained it.
And what have I explained? I have explained: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.
And why have I explained this? Because it’s beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. That’s why I’ve explained it.
That’s why you should practice meditation …”

“Venerable sir, the siṁsapa leaves that the Blessed One has taken up in his hand are few, but those in the siṁsapa grove overhead are numerous.”
“So too, bhikkhus, the things I have directly known but have not taught you are numerous, while the things I have taught you are few. And why, bhikkhus, have I not taught those many things? Because they are unbeneficial, irrelevant to the fundamentals of the holy life, and do not lead to revulsion, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna. Therefore I have not taught them.
“And what, bhikkhus, have I taught? I have taught: ‘This is suffering’; I have taught: ‘This is the origin of suffering’; I have taught: ‘This is the cessation of suffering’; I have taught: ‘This is the way leading to the cessation of suffering.’ And why, bhikkhus, have I taught this? “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘Māra’. How do we define Māra or what is known as Māra?”
“Samiddhi, where there is the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and phenomena to be known by eye consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is the ear, sounds, ear consciousness, and phenomena to be known by ear consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is the nose, smells, nose consciousness, and phenomena to be known by nose consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is the tongue, tastes, tongue consciousness, and phenomena to be known by tongue consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is the body, touches, body consciousness, and phenomena to be known by body consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is the mind, thoughts, mind consciousness, and phenomena to be known by mind consciousness, there is Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is no eye, no sights, no eye consciousness, and no phenomena to be known by eye consciousness, there is no Māra or what is known as Māra.
Where there is no ear … no nose … no tongue … no body …
Where there is no mind, no thoughts, no mind consciousness, and no phenomena to be known by mind consciousness, there is no Māra or what is known as Māra.”

“When there is form, Rādha, there may be Māra, or the murderer, or the murdered. So you should see form as Māra, the murderer, the murdered, the diseased, the boil, the dart, the misery, the miserable. Those who see it like this see rightly. When there is feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, there may be Māra, or the murderer, or the murdered. So you should see consciousness as Māra, the murderer, the murdered, the diseased, the boil, the dart, the misery, the miserable. Those who see it like this see rightly.”
“But sir, what’s the purpose of seeing rightly?”
“Disillusionment is the purpose of seeing rightly.”
“But what’s the purpose of disillusionment?”
“Dispassion is the purpose of disillusionment.”
“But what’s the purpose of dispassion?”
“Freedom is the purpose of dispassion.”
“But what’s the purpose of freedom?”
“Extinguishment is the purpose of freedom.”
“But sir, what is the purpose of extinguishment?”
“Your question goes too far, Rādha. You couldn’t figure out the limit of questions. For extinguishment is the culmination, destination, and end of the spiritual life.”

Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:
“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘Māra’. How is Māra defined?”
“Rādha, form is Māra, feeling is Māra, perception is Māra, choices are Māra, consciousness is Māra.
Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’”

Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:
“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘susceptible to Māra’. What is susceptible to Māra?”
“Rādha, form is susceptible to Māra. Feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are susceptible to Māra.
Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“When you grasp, mendicant, you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One.”
“Understood, Blessed One! Understood, Holy One!”
“But how do you see the detailed meaning of my brief statement?”
“Sir, when you grasp form you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One. When you grasp feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One.
That’s how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement.”
“Good, good, mendicant! It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.
When you grasp form you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One. When you grasp feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One.
This is how to understand the detailed meaning of what I said in brief.”
And then that mendicant approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And that mendicant became one of the perfected.

“Bhikkhu, in clinging one is bound by Mara; by not clinging one is freed from the Evil One.”
“Understood, Blessed One! Understood, Fortunate One!”
“In what way, bhikkhu, do you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief?”
“In clinging to form, venerable sir, one is bound by Mara; by not clinging to it one is freed from the Evil One. In clinging to feeling … to perception … to volitional formations … to consciousness one is bound by Mara; by not clinging to it one is freed from the Evil One.
“It is in such a way, venerable sir, that I understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by the Blessed One in brief.”
“Good, good, bhikkhu! It is good that you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief. In clinging to form, bhikkhu, one is bound by Mara … as above in full … by not clinging to it one is freed from the Evil One. It is in such a way that the meaning of what was stated by me in brief should be understood in detail.”
Then that bhikkhu, having delighted and rejoiced in the Blessed One’s words, rose from his seat, and, after paying homage to the Blessed One, keeping him on his right, he departed.
Then, dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute, that bhikkhu, by realizing it for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life entered and dwelt in that unsurpassed goal of the holy life for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness. He directly knew: “Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.” And that bhikkhu became one of the arahants.

“Good, good, mendicant! It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.
When you take pleasure in form you’re bound by Māra. Not taking pleasure, you’re free from the Wicked One. When you take pleasure in feeling … perception … choices … consciousness you’re bound by Māra. Not taking pleasure, you’re free from the Wicked One.
This is how to understand the detailed meaning of what I said in brief.” …

“Understood, Blessed One! Understood, Fortunate One!”
“In what way, bhikkhu, do you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief?”
“In seeking delight in form, venerable sir, one is bound by Mara; by not seeking delight in it one is freed from the Evil One. In seeking delight in feeling … in perception … in volitional formations … in consciousness one is bound by Mara; by not seeking delight in it one is freed from the Evil One.
“It is in such a way, venerable sir, that I understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by the Blessed One in brief.”
“Good, good, bhikkhu! It is good that you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief. In seeking delight in form, bhikkhu, one is bound by Mara … as above in full … by not seeking delight in it one is freed from the Evil One. It is in such a way that the meaning of what was stated by me in brief should be understood in detail.”

“In the same way, monks, on whatever occasion a monk—secluded from sensuality, secluded from unskillful qualities—enters the first jhāna: rapture & pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation, on that occasion the thought occurs to him, ‘Having come to this shelter for the fearful, I will now keep here to myself, having nothing to do with Māra.’ And the thought occurs to Māra, the Evil One, ‘Having gone to this shelter for the fearful, the monk will now keep here to himself, having nothing to do with me.’

“On whatever occasion a monk, with the complete transcending of perceptions of (physical) form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, and not attending to perceptions of multiplicity, (perceiving,) ‘Infinite space,’ enters the dimension of the infinitude of space: He is said to be a monk who has put Māra in the dark.1 Having bound Māra’s eyes and leaving no trace, he has become invisible to the Evil One.2
[Similarly with the dimensions of the infinitude of consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception.]
“On whatever occasion, with the complete transcending of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, he enters & remains in the cessation of perception & feeling; and as he sees (that) with discernment, effluents are completely ended: He is said to be a monk who has put Māra in the dark. Having bound Māra’s eyes and leaving no trace, he has become invisible to the Evil One, having crossed over attachment in the cosmos.”3

1. The text here has antamakāsi—“has put an end to”—which does not fit the context as well as the reading, andhamakāsi—“has put in the dark”—found in the parallel passage in MN 25, so I have followed the latter reading here.
2. The interpretation of this image here differs from that in MN 25 and MN 26, both of which state that the monk puts Māra in the dark upon entering the first jhāna. In either case—putting Māra in the dark beginning with the first jhāna, or only beginning with the dimension of the infinitude of space—the “dark” is temporary, lasting only as long as one is in that attainment.
3. This is the only one of these attainments that inherently contains the discernment that takes one, once and for all, beyond attachment in the cosmos.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Then after the meal, on return from almsround, several senior mendicants sat together in the assembly hall and this discussion came up among them.
“It’s incredible, reverends, it’s amazing, how the Blessed One, who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has said that mindfulness of the body, when developed and cultivated, is very fruitful and beneficial.”
But their conversation was left unfinished. Then the Buddha came out of retreat and went to the pavilion. He sat on the seat spread out and addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants, what were you sitting talking about just now? What conversation was unfinished?”
So the mendicants told him what they had been talking about. The Buddha said:
“And how, mendicants, is mindfulness of the body developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial?
It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut. They sit down cross-legged, with their body straight, and establish mindfulness right there. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. When breathing in heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing in heavily.’ When breathing out heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing out heavily.’ When breathing in lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing in lightly.’ When breathing out lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing out lightly.’ They practice breathing in experiencing the whole body. They practice breathing out experiencing the whole body. They practice breathing in stilling the body’s motion. They practice breathing out stilling the body’s motion. As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That’s how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, when a mendicant is walking they know ‘I am walking’. When standing they know ‘I am standing’. When sitting they know ‘I am sitting’. And when lying down they know ‘I am lying down’. Whatever posture their body is in, they know it. As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, a mendicant acts with situational awareness when going out and coming back; when looking ahead and aside; when bending and extending the limbs; when bearing the outer robe, bowl and robes; when eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting; when urinating and defecating; when walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking, speaking, and keeping silent. As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, a mendicant examines their own body, up from the soles of the feet and down from the tips of the hairs, wrapped in skin and full of many kinds of filth. ‘In this body there is head hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, undigested food, feces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, snot, synovial fluid, urine.’
It’s as if there were a bag with openings at both ends, filled with various kinds of grains, such as fine rice, wheat, mung beans, peas, sesame, and ordinary rice. And someone with good eyesight were to open it and examine the contents: ‘These grains are fine rice, these are wheat, these are mung beans, these are peas, these are sesame, and these are ordinary rice.’ In the same way, a mendicant examines their own body, up from the soles of the feet and down from the tips of the hairs, wrapped in skin and full of many kinds of filth. … As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, a mendicant examines their own body, whatever its placement or posture, according to the elements: ‘In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the air element.’
It’s as if a deft butcher or butcher’s apprentice were to kill a cow and sit down at the crossroads with the meat cut into portions. In the same way, a mendicant examines their own body, whatever its placement or posture, according to the elements: ‘In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the air element.’ As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, suppose a mendicant were to see a corpse discarded in a charnel ground. And it had been dead for one, two, or three days, bloated, livid, and festering. They’d compare it with their own body: ‘This body is also of that same nature, that same kind, and cannot go beyond that.’ As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Or suppose they were to see a corpse discarded in a charnel ground being devoured by crows, hawks, vultures, herons, dogs, tigers, leopards, jackals, and many kinds of little creatures. They’d compare it with their own body: ‘This body is also of that same nature, that same kind, and cannot go beyond that.’ That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, suppose they were to see a corpse discarded in a charnel ground, a skeleton with flesh and blood, held together by sinews … A skeleton without flesh but smeared with blood, and held together by sinews … A skeleton rid of flesh and blood, held together by sinews … Bones without sinews scattered in every direction. Here a hand-bone, there a foot-bone, here a shin-bone, there a thigh-bone, here a hip-bone, there a rib-bone, here a back-bone, there an arm-bone, here a neck-bone, there a jaw-bone, here a tooth, there the skull …
White bones, the color of shells … Decrepit bones, heaped in a pile … Bones rotted and crumbled to powder. They’d compare it with their own body: ‘This body is also of that same nature, that same kind, and cannot go beyond that.’ As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. They drench, steep, fill, and spread their body with rapture and bliss born of seclusion. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with rapture and bliss born of seclusion. It’s like when a deft bathroom attendant or their apprentice pours bath powder into a bronze dish, sprinkling it little by little with water. They knead it until the ball of bath powder is soaked and saturated with moisture, spread through inside and out; yet no moisture oozes out. In the same way, they drench, steep, fill, and spread their body with rapture and bliss born of seclusion. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with rapture and bliss born of seclusion. As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, a mendicant enters and remains in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and confidence, and unified mind, without placing the mind and keeping it connected. They drench, steep, fill, and spread their body with rapture and bliss born of immersion. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with rapture and bliss born of immersion. It’s like a deep lake fed by spring water. There’s no inlet to the east, west, north, or south, and no rainfall to replenish it from time to time. But the stream of cool water welling up in the lake drenches, steeps, fills, and spreads throughout the lake. There’s no part of the lake that’s not spread through with cool water. In the same way, a mendicant drenches, steeps, fills, and spreads their body with rapture and bliss born of immersion. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with rapture and bliss born of immersion. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, with the fading away of rapture, a mendicant enters and remains in the third absorption. They meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’ They drench, steep, fill, and spread their body with bliss free of rapture. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with bliss free of rapture. It’s like a pool with blue water lilies, or pink or white lotuses. Some of them sprout and grow in the water without rising above it, thriving underwater. From the tip to the root they’re drenched, steeped, filled, and soaked with cool water. There’s no part of them that’s not soaked with cool water. In the same way, a mendicant drenches, steeps, fills, and spreads their body with bliss free of rapture. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread with bliss free of rapture. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Furthermore, a mendicant, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, enters and remains in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. They sit spreading their body through with pure bright mind. There’s no part of the body that’s not filled with pure bright mind. It’s like someone sitting wrapped from head to foot with white cloth. There’s no part of the body that’s not spread over with white cloth. In the same way, they sit spreading their body through with pure bright mind. There’s no part of the body that’s not filled with pure bright mind. As they meditate like this—diligent, keen, and resolute—memories and thoughts of the lay life are given up. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That too is how a mendicant develops mindfulness of the body.
Anyone who has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body includes all of the skillful qualities that play a part in realization. Anyone who brings into their mind the great ocean includes all of the streams that run down into it. In the same way, anyone who has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body includes all of the skillful qualities that play a part in realization.
When a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. Suppose a person were to throw a heavy stone ball on a mound of wet clay.
What do you think, mendicants? Would that heavy stone ball find an entry into that mound of wet clay?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them.
Suppose there was a dried up, withered log. Then a person comes along with a drill-stick, thinking to light a fire and produce heat.
What do you think, mendicants? By drilling the stick against that dried up, withered log on dry land far from water, could they light a fire and produce heat?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them.
Suppose a water jar was placed on a stand, empty and hollow. Then a person comes along with a load of water.
What do you think, mendicants? Could that person pour water into the jar?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them.
When a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them.
Suppose a person were to throw a light ball of string at a door-panel made entirely of hardwood.
What do you think, mendicants? Would that light ball of string find an entry into that door-panel made entirely of hardwood?”
“No, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them.
Suppose there was a green, sappy log. Then a person comes along with a drill-stick, thinking to light a fire and produce heat.
What do you think, mendicants? By drilling the stick against that green, sappy log on dry land far from water, could they light a fire and produce heat?”
“No, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them. Suppose a water jar was placed on a stand, full to the brim so a crow could drink from it. Then a person comes along with a load of water.
What do you think, mendicants? Could that person pour water into the jar?”
“No, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them.
When a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, they become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case.
Suppose a water jar was placed on a stand, full to the brim so a crow could drink from it. If a strong man was to pour it on any side, would water pour out?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, they become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case.
Suppose there was a square, walled lotus pond on level ground, full to the brim so a crow could drink from it. If a strong man was to open the wall on any side, would water pour out?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, they become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case. Suppose a chariot stood harnessed to thoroughbreds at a level crossroads, with a goad ready. Then a deft horse trainer, a master charioteer, might mount the chariot, taking the reins in his right hand and goad in the left. He’d drive out and back wherever he wishes, whenever he wishes. In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, they become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case.
You can expect ten benefits when mindfulness of the body has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented.
They prevail over desire and discontent, and live having mastered desire and discontent whenever they arose.
They prevail over fear and dread, and live having mastered fear and dread whenever they arose.
They endure cold, heat, hunger, and thirst; the touch of flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and reptiles; rude and unwelcome criticism; and put up with physical pain—sharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, disagreeable, and life-threatening.
They get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
They wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
With clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, they hear both kinds of sounds, human and divine, whether near or far. …
They understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind. …
They recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
With clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
You can expect these ten benefits when mindfulness of the body has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented.”

Thus have I heard: At one time the Lord was staying near Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then when a number of monks had returned from the alms-gathering after the meal and were sitting down gathered together in an assembly hall, there arose this conversation: “It is marvellous, revered sirs, it is wonderful, revered sirs, that mindfulness of body when developed and made much of is of great fruit, of great advantage, as was said by the Lord who knows, who sees, the perfected one, the fully Self-Awakened One.” But this conversation between these monks was interrupted. For the Lord, emerging from solitary meditation towards evening, approached the assembly hall; having approached, he sat down on the seat made ready. As he was sitting down, the Lord addressed the monks, saying: “What were you talking about here, monks, as you were sitting down? And what was your conversation that was interrupted?”
“As to this, revered sir, when we had returned from the alms-gathering after our meal and were sitting down gathered together in the assembly hall this conversation arose: ‘It is marvellous, revered sirs, it is wonderful, revered sirs, that mindfulness of body when developed and made much of is of great fruit, of great advantage, as was said by the Lord … fully Self-Awakened One.’ This, revered sir, was our conversation that was interrupted, for then the Lord arrived.”
“And how, monks, when mindfulness of body has been developed, how when it has been made much of, is it of great fruit, of great advantage? As to this, monks, a monk who is forest-gone or gone to the root of a tree or gone to an empty place, sits down cross-legged, holding his back erect, arousing mindfulness in front of him. Mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out. Whether he is breathing in … breathing out a long (breath) … a short (breath), he comprehends, ‘I am breathing in … out a long (breath) … a short (breath).’ He trains himself thinking, ‘I will breath in … out experiencing the whole body.’ He trains himself, thinking, ‘I will breathe in … out tranquillising the activity of the body.’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute, those memories and aspirations that are worldly are got rid of; by getting rid of them the mind itself is inwardly settled, calmed, focussed, concentrated. Thus, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, when a monk is walking he comprehends, ‘I am walking’; or when he is standing still he comprehends, ‘I am standing still’; or when he is sitting down he comprehends, ‘I am sitting down’; or when he is lying down he comprehends, ‘I am lying down.’ So that however his body is disposed he comprehends that it is like that. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … the mind itself is inwardly settled, calmed, focussed, concentrated. Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk, when he is setting out or returning is one acting in a clearly conscious way; when he is looking in front or looking around … when he has bent in or stretched out (his arm) … when he is carrying his outer cloak, bowl and robe … when he is eating, drinking, chewing, tasting … when he is obeying the calls of nature … when he is walking, standing, sitting, asleep, awake, talking, silent, he is one acting in a clearly conscious way. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk reflects precisely on this body itself, encased as it is in skin and full of various impurities, from the soles of the feet up and from the crown of the head down, that: ‘There is connected with this body hair of the head, hair of the body, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, membranes, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, stomach, excrement, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, serum, saliva, mucus, synovic fluid, urine.’
Monks, it is as if there were a double mouthed provision bag that was full of various kinds of grain such as hill-paddy, paddy, kidney beans, peas, sesamum, rice; and a keen-eyed man, pouring them out, might reflect: ‘That’s hill-paddy, that’s paddy, that’s kidney beans, that’s peas, that’s sesamum, that’s rice.’ Even so, monks, does a monk reflect precisely on this body itself, encased as it is in skin and full of various impurities, from the soles of the feet up and from the crown of the head down, that: ‘There is connected with this body hair of the head … urine.’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk reflects on this body itself according to how it is placed or disposed in respect of the elements, thinking: ‘In this body there is the element of extension … of cohesion … of radiation … of motion.’ Monks, it is as if a skilled cattle-butcher or his apprentice, having slaughtered a cow, might sit at the crossroads displaying its carcase. Even so, monks, does a monk reflect on this body itself according to how it is placed or disposed in respect of the elements, thinking: ‘In this body there is the element of extension … of cohesion … of radiation … of motion.’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, it is as if a monk might see, thrown aside in a cemetery a body that had been dead for one day or for two days or for three days, swollen, discoloured, decomposing; so he focuses on this body itself, thinking: ‘This body too is of a similar nature, a similar constitution, it has not got past that (state of things).’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, it is as if a monk might see thrown aside in a cemetery a body which was being devoured by crows or ravens or vultures or wild dogs or jackals or by various small creatures; so he focusses on this body itself, thinking: ‘This body too is of a similar nature, a similar constitution, it has not got past that (state of things).’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, it is as if a monk might see thrown aside in a cemetery a body which was a skeleton but with (some) flesh and blood, sinew-bound … a skeleton, which was fleshless but blood-bespattered, sinew-bound … a skeleton which was without flesh or blood, sinew-bound; or the bones scattered here and there, no longer held together: here a bone of the hand, there a foot-bone, here a leg-bone, there a rib, here a hip-bone, there a back-bone, here the skull; so he focusses on this body itself, thinking: ‘This body too is of a similar nature, a similar constitution, it has not got past this (state of things).’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, it is as if a monk might see thrown aside in a cemetery a body the bones of which were white and something like sea-shells … a heap of dried up bones more than a year old .. the bones gone rotten and reduced to powder; so he focusses on this body itself, thinking: ‘This body too is of a similar nature, a similar constitution, it has not got past this (state of things).’ While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute, those memories and aspirations that are worldly are got rid of; by getting rid of them the mind is inwardly settled, calmed, focussed, concentrated. Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk, aloof from pleasures of the senses, aloof from unskilled states of mind, enters on and abides in the first meditation which is accompanied by initial thought and discursive thought, is born of aloofness, and is rapturous and joyful. He drenches, saturates, permeates, suffuses this very body with the rapture and joy that are born of aloofness; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the rapture and joy that are born of aloofness. Monks, as a skilled bath-attendant or his apprentice, having sprinkled bath-powder into a bronze vessel, might knead it while repeatedly sprinkling it with water until the ball of lather had taken up moisture, was drenched with moisture, suffused with moisture inside and out, but without any oozing. Even so, monks, does a monk drench, saturate, permeate, suffuse this very body with the rapture and joy that are born of aloofness; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the rapture and joy that are born of aloofness. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk, by allaying initial thought and discursive thought, with the mind subjectively tranquillised and fixed on one point, enters on and abides in the second meditation which is devoid of initial thought and discursive thought, is born of concentration and is rapturous and joyful. He drenches, saturates, permeates, suffuses this very body with the rapture and joy that are born of concentration; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the rapture and joy that are born of concentration. Monks, it is like a pool of water with water welling up within it, but which has no inlet for water from the eastern … western … northern … or southern side, and even if the god does not send down showers upon it from time to time, yet the current of cool water having welled up from that pool will drench, saturate, permeate, suffuse that pool with cool water. Even so, monks, does a monk drench saturate, permeate, suffuse this very body with the rapture and joy that are born of concentration; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the rapture and joy that are born of concentration. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk, by the fading out of rapture, dwells with equanimity, attentive and clearly conscious and experiences in his person that joy of which the ariyans say: ‘Joyful lives he who has equanimity and is mindful,’ and he enters on and abides in the third meditation. He drenches, saturates, permeates, suffuses this very body with the joy that has no rapture; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the joy that has no rapture. As in a pond of white … or red … or blue lotuses, some white … or red … or blue lotuses are born in the water, grow up in the water, never rising above the surface but flourishing beneath it and from their roots to the tips are drenched, saturated, permeated, suffused by cool water; even so, monks, does a monk drench, saturate, permeate, suffuse this very body with the joy that has no rapture; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused with the joy that has no rapture. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute … Thus too does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
And again, monks, a monk, by getting rid of joy and by getting rid of anguish, by the going down of his former pleasures and sorrows, enters on and abides in the fourth meditation which has neither anguish nor joy, and which is entirely purified by equanimity and mindfulness. He, having suffused this very body with a mind that is utterly pure, utterly clean, comes to be sitting down; there is no part of his whole body that is not suffused by a mind that is utterly pure, utterly clean. Monks, it is as if a man might be sitting down who had clothed himself including his head with a white cloth; there would be no part of his whole body not covered by the white cloth. Even so, monks, a monk, having suffused this very body with a mind that is utterly pure, utterly clean, comes to be sitting down; there is no part of this whole body that is not suffused by a mind that is utterly pure, utterly clean. While he is thus diligent, ardent, self-resolute, those memories and aspirations that are worldly are got rid of; by getting rid of them the mind itself is inwardly settled, calmed, focussed, concentrated. Thus too, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness of body.
Monks, those skilled states that are connected with knowledge are in anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. As, monks, those streams that flow down to the ocean are in anyone in whom the great ocean has been suffused by thought, even so, those skilled states that are connected with knowledge are in anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. Monks, Māra gains access to whatever monk there is in whom mindfulness of body has not been developed, not been made much of. Monks, it is as though a man were to throw a heavy round stone into a mound of moist clay. What do you think, monks? Would that heavy round stone gain access to that mound of moist clay?”
“Yes, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra gains access to, Māra gets a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has not been developed, not made much of. Monks, it is as though there were a dry sapless stick, and a man were to come along bringing an upper piece of fire-stick, thinking: ‘I will light a fire, I will get heat.’ What do you think, monks? Could that man, bringing an upper piece of fire-stick and rubbing that dry sapless stick (with it), light a fire, could he get heat?”
“Yes, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra gains access to, Māra gets a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has not been developed, not been made much of. Monks, it is as though a water-pot were standing void and empty on its support, and a man were to come along bringing a load of water. What do you think, monks? Would that man get a chance to unload the water?”
“Yes, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra gains access to, Māra gets a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has not been developed, not been made much of. (But), monks, Māra does not gain access to, Māra does not get a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. Monks, it is as though a man were to throw a light ball of thread against a door-panel made entirely from heartwood. What do you think, monks? Would that light ball of thread gain access to a door-panel made entirely from heart-wood?”
“No, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra does not gain access to, Māra does not get a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. It is as though, monks, there were a wet sappy stick, and a man were to come along bringing an upper piece of fire-stick, thinking: ‘I will light a fire, I will get heat.’ What do you think, monks? Could that man, bringing an upper piece of fire-stick and rubbing that wet sappy stick (with it), light a fire, could he get heat?”
“No, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra does not gain access to, Māra does not get a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. Monks, it is as though a full water-pot, brimming with water so that a crow could drink from it, were placed in a support, and a man were to come along bringing a load of water. What do you think, monks? Would that man get a chance to unload the water?”
“No, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, Māra does not gain access to, Māra does not get a chance over anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of. Anyone, monks, in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of, turns his mind to this or that realisation through super-knowledge of a thing that may be realised through super-knowledge and achieves ability as a witness now here, now there, whatever may be the plane. Monks, it is as though a full water-pot, brimming with water so that a crow could drink from it, were placed in a support and a strong man were to rock it from side to side—would the water spill?”
“Yes, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of, turns his mind to this or that realisation through super-knowledge of a thing that may be realised through super-knowledge and achieves ability as a witness now here, now there, whatever may be the plane. Monks, it is as though there were a tank on a level stretch of ground, its four sides strengthened with dykes, full and brimming with water so that a crow could drink from it, and a strong man were to loosen a dyke at this side or that—would the water spill?”
“Yes, revered sir.”
“Even so, monks, anyone in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of, turns his mind to this or that realisation through super-knowledge of a thing that may be realised through super-knowledge and achieves ability as a witness now here, now there, whatever may be the plane. Monks, it is as though at a cross-roads on level ground a chariot were standing harnessed with thoroughbreds, the goad hanging ready; and a skilled groom, a charioteer of horses to be tamed, having mounted it, having taken the reins in his left hand, the goad in his right, were to drive up and down as he liked; even so, monks, anyone whomsoever in whom mindfulness of body has been developed and made much of, turns his mind to this and that realisation through super-knowledge of a thing that may be realised through super-knowledge and achieves ability as a witness now here, now there, whatever may be the plane.
Monks, these ten advantages are to be expected from pursuing mindfulness of body, developing it, making much of it, making it a vehicle, making it a foundation, practising it, increasing it, and fully undertaking it. What ten?
He is one who overcomes dislike and liking, and dislike (and liking) do not overcome him; he fares along constantly conquering any dislike (and liking) that have arisen.
He is one who overcomes fear and dread, and fear and dread do not overcome him; and he fares along constantly conquering any fear and dread that have arisen.
He is one who bears cold, heat, hunger, thirst, the touch of gadfly, mosquito, wind and sun, creeping things, ways of speech that are irksome, unwelcome; he is of a character to bear bodily feelings which, arising, are painful, acute, sharp, shooting, disagreeable, miserable, deadly.
He is one who at will, without trouble, without difficulty, acquires the four meditations that are of the purest mentality, abidings in ease here and now.
He experiences the various forms of psychic power: having been one he is manifold; having been manifold he is one; manifest or invisible he goes unhindered through a wall, a rampart, a mountain as if through air; he plunges into the ground and shoots up again as if in water; he walks upon the water without parting it as if on the ground; sitting cross-legged he travels through the air like a bird on the wing; with his hand he rubs and strokes this moon and sun although they are of such mighty power and majesty; and even as far as the Brahma-world he has power in respect of his person.
By the purified deva-like hearing which surpasses that of men he hears both (kinds of) sounds—deva-like ones and human ones, whether they be far or near.
He comprehends by mind the minds of other beings, of other individuals, so that he comprehends a mind that is full of attachment … aversion … confusion, that it is full of attachment … aversion … confusion; or a mind that is without attachment … aversion … confusion, that it is without attachment … aversion … confusion; or he comprehends a mind that is contracted that it is contracted, or a mind that is distracted that it is distracted; or of a mind that has become great that it has become great, or of a mind that has not become great that it has not become great; or of a mind with (some other mental state) superior to it that it has (some other mental state) superior to it, or of a mind that has no (other mental state) superior to it that it has no (other mental state) superior to it; or of a mind that is composed that it is composed, or of a mind that is not composed that it is not composed; or of a mind that is freed that it is freed, or of a mind that is not freed that it is not freed.
He recollects manifold former habitations, that is to say one birth and two births and … Thus he recollects (his) former habitations in all their modes and detail.
With the purified deva-vision surpassing that of men he beholds beings as they pass hence and come to be; he comprehends that beings are mean, excellent, fair, foul, in a good bourn, in a bad bourn according to the consequences of deeds.
By the destruction of the cankers, having realised here and now by his own super-knowledge the freedom of mind and the freedom through intuitive wisdom that are cankerless, entering thereon, he abides therein.
Monks, these ten advantages are to be expected from pursuing mindfulness of body, developing it, making much of it, making it a vehicle, making it a foundation, practising it, increasing it and fully undertaking it.”

When they had entered their castle, they thought, ‘Now we’re in a secure location and the demons can’t do anything to us.’ The demons also thought, ‘Now the gods are in a secure location and we can’t do anything to them.’

In the same way, a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. At such a time the mendicant thinks, ‘Now I’m in a secure location and Māra can’t do anything to me.’ And Māra the Wicked also thinks, ‘Now the mendicant is in a secure location and we can’t do anything to them.’
When, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, a mendicant enters and remains in the second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption. At such a time the mendicant thinks, ‘Now I’m in a secure location and Māra can’t do anything to me.’ And Māra the Wicked also thinks, ‘Now the mendicant is in a secure location and we can’t do anything to them.’
A mendicant, going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite space. At such a time they are called a mendicant who has blinded Māra, put out his eyes without a trace, and gone where the Wicked One cannot see.
A mendicant, going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ‘consciousness is infinite’, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite consciousness. … Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ‘there is nothing at all’, they enter and remain in the dimension of nothingness. … Going totally beyond the dimension of nothingness, they enter and remain in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. …
Going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, they enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end. At such a time they are called a mendicant who has blinded Māra, put out his eyes without a trace, and gone where the Wicked One cannot see. And they’ve crossed over clinging to the world.”
