Thoughts of a great man

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Bhaggas on Crocodile Hill, in the deer park at Bhesakaḷā’s Wood. And at that time Venerable Anuruddha was staying in the land of the Cetīs in the Eastern Bamboo Park. Then as Anuruddha was in private retreat this thought came to his mind:
“This teaching is for those of few wishes, not those of many wishes. It’s for the contented, not those who lack contentment. It’s for the secluded, not those who enjoy company. It’s for the energetic, not the lazy. It’s for the mindful, not the unmindful. It’s for those with immersion, not those without immersion. It’s for the wise, not the witless.”
Then the Buddha knew what Anuruddha was thinking. As easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from the deer park at Bhesakaḷā’s Wood in the land of the Bhaggas and reappeared in front of Anurruddha in the Eastern Bamboo Park in the land of the Cetīs, and sat on the seat spread out. Anuruddha bowed to the Buddha and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“Good, good, Anuruddha! It’s good that you reflect on these thoughts of a great man: ‘This teaching is for those of few wishes, not those of many wishes. It’s for the contented, not those who lack contentment. It’s for the secluded, not those who enjoy company. It’s for the energetic, not the lazy. It’s for the mindful, not the unmindful. It’s for those with immersion, not those without immersion. It’s for the wise, not the witless.’ Well then, Anuruddha, you should also reflect on the following eighth thought of a great man: ‘This teaching is for those who don’t enjoy proliferating and don’t like to proliferate, not for those who enjoy proliferating and like to proliferate.’
First you’ll reflect on these eight thoughts of a great man. Then whenever you want, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, you’ll enter and remain in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.
You’ll enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and confidence, and unified mind, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.
You’ll enter and remain in the third absorption, where you’ll meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’
Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, you’ll enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.
First you’ll reflect on these eight thoughts of a great man, and you’ll get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when you want, without trouble or difficulty. Then as you live contented your rag robe will seem to you like a chest full of garments of different colors seems to a householder or householder’s child. It will be for your enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and for alighting upon extinguishment.
As you live contented your scraps of almsfood will seem to you like boiled fine rice with the dark grains picked out, served with many soups and sauces seems to a householder or householder’s child. It will be for your enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and for alighting upon extinguishment.
As you live contented your lodging at the root of a tree will seem to you like a bungalow, plastered inside and out, draft-free, with latches fastened and windows shuttered seems to a householder or householder’s child. It will be for your enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and for alighting upon extinguishment.
As you live contented your lodging at the root of a tree will seem to you like a couch spread with woolen covers—shag-piled, pure white, or embroidered with flowers—and spread with a fine deer hide, with a canopy above and red pillows at both ends seems to a householder or householder’s child. It will be for your enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and for alighting upon extinguishment.
As you live contented your fermented urine as medicine will seem to you like various medicines—ghee, butter, oil, honey, and molasses—seem to a householder or householder’s child. It will be for your enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and for alighting upon extinguishment. Well then, Anuruddha, for the next rainy season residence you should stay right here in the land of the Cetīs in the Eastern Bamboo Park.”
“Yes, sir,” Anuruddha replied.
After advising Anuruddha like this, the Buddha—as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from the Eastern Bamboo Park in the land of the Cetīs and reappeared in the deer park at Bhesakaḷā’s Wood in the land of the Bhaggas. He sat on the seat spread out and addressed the mendicants: “Mendicants, I will teach you the eight thoughts of a great man. Listen …
And what are the eight thoughts of a great man? This teaching is for those of few wishes, not those of many wishes. It’s for the contented, not those who lack contentment. It’s for the secluded, not those who enjoy company. It’s for the energetic, not the lazy. It’s for the mindful, not the unmindful. It’s for those with immersion, not those without immersion. It’s for the wise, not the witless. It’s for those who don’t enjoy proliferating and don’t like to proliferate, not for those who enjoy proliferating and like to proliferate.
‘This teaching is for those of few wishes, not those of many wishes.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? A mendicant with few wishes doesn’t wish: ‘May they know me as having few wishes!’ When contented, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as contented!’ When secluded, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as secluded!’ When energetic, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as energetic!’ When mindful, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as mindful!’ When immersed, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as immersed!’ When wise, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as wise!’ When not enjoying proliferation, they don’t wish: ‘May they know me as one who doesn’t enjoy proliferating!’ ‘This teaching is for those of few wishes, not those of many wishes.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for the contented, not those who lack contentment.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who’s content with any kind of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. ‘This teaching is for the contented, not those who lack contentment.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for the secluded, not those who enjoy company.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who lives secluded. But monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, rulers and their ministers, founders of religious sects and their disciples go to visit them. With a mind slanting, sloping, and inclining to seclusion, withdrawn, and loving renunciation, that mendicant invariably gives each of them a talk emphasizing the topic of dismissal. ‘This teaching is for the secluded, not those who enjoy company.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for the energetic, not the lazy.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. ‘This teaching is for the energetic, not the lazy.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for the mindful, not the unmindful.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who’s mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago. ‘This teaching is for the mindful, not the unmindful.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for those with immersion, not those without immersion.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption … second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption. ‘This teaching is for those with immersion, not those without immersion.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for the wise, not the witless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant who’s wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. ‘This teaching is for the wise, not the witless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘This teaching is for those who don’t enjoy proliferating and don’t like to proliferate, not for those who enjoy proliferating and like to proliferate.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? It’s for a mendicant whose mind is eager, confident, settled, and decided regarding the cessation of proliferation. ‘This teaching is for those who don’t enjoy proliferating and don’t like to proliferate, not for those who enjoy proliferating and like to proliferate.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.”
Then Anuruddha stayed the next rainy season residence right there in the land of the Cetīs in the Eastern Bamboo Park. And Anuruddha, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Anuruddha became one of the perfected. And on the occasion of attaining perfection he recited these verses:
“Knowing my thoughts,the supreme Teacher in the worldcame to me in a mind-made body,using his psychic power.
He taught me morethan I had thought of.The Buddha who loves non-proliferationtaught me non-proliferation.
Understanding that teaching,I happily did his bidding.I’ve attained the three knowledges,and have fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.”

On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Bhaggas in Suṁsumāragira in the deer park at Bhesakalā Grove. Now on that occasion the Venerable Anuruddha dwelled among the Cetis in the eastern bamboo park. While the Venerable Anuruddha was alone in seclusion, a course of thought arose in his mind thus:
(1) “This Dhamma is for one with few desires, not for one with strong desires. (2) This Dhamma is for one who is content, not for one who is discontent. (3) This Dhamma is for one who resorts to solitude, not for one who delights in company. (4) This Dhamma is for one who is energetic, not for one who is lazy. (5) This Dhamma is for one with mindfulness established, not for one who is muddle-minded. (6) This Dhamma is for one who is concentrated, not for one who is unconcentrated. (7) This Dhamma is for one who is wise, not for one who is unwise.”
The Blessed One knew with his own mind the course of thought in the Venerable Anuruddha’s mind. Then, just as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared from among the Bhaggas at Suṁsumāragira, in the deer park at Bhesakalā Grove, and reappeared before the Venerable Anuruddha among the Cetis in the eastern bamboo park. The Blessed One sat down on the seat prepared for him. The Venerable Anuruddha then paid homage to him and sat down to one side, and the Blessed One said to him: “Good, good, Anuruddha! It is good that you have reflected on these thoughts of a great person, namely: ‘This Dhamma is for one with few desires, not for one with strong desires…. This Dhamma is for one who is wise, not for one who is unwise.’ Therefore, Anuruddha, also reflect on this eighth thought of a great person: (8) ‘This Dhamma is for one who delights in non-proliferation, who takes delight in nonproliferation, not for one who delights in proliferation, who takes delight in proliferation.’
“When, Anuruddha, you reflect on these eight thoughts of a great person, then, as much as you wish, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, you will enter and dwell in the first jhāna, which consists of rapture and pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by thought and examination.
“When you reflect on these eight thoughts of a great person, then, as much as you wish, with the subsiding of thought and examination, you will enter and dwell in the second jhāna, which has internal placidity and unification of mind and consists of rapture and pleasure born of concentration, without thought and examination.
“When you reflect on these eight thoughts of a great person, then, as much as you wish, with the fading away as well of rapture, you will dwell equanimous and, mindful and clearly comprehending, experience pleasure with the body; you will enter and dwell in the third jhāna of which the noble ones declare: ‘He is equanimous, mindful, one who dwells happily.’
“When you reflect on these eight thoughts of a great person, then, as much as you wish, with the abandoning of pleasure and pain, and with the previous passing away of joy and sadness, you will enter and dwell in the fourth jhāna, neither painful nor pleasant, which has purification of mindfulness by equanimity.
“When, Anuruddha, you reflect upon these eight thoughts of a great person and gain at will, without trouble or difficulty, these four jhānas that constitute the higher mind and are pleasant dwellings in this very life, then, while you dwell contentedly, your rag-robe will seem to you as a chest full of variously colored garments seems to a householder or a householder’s son; and it will serve for your delight, relief, and ease, and for entering upon nibbāna.
“When you reflect upon these eight thoughts of a great person and gain at will … these four jhānas … then, while you dwell contentedly, your scraps of almsfood will seem to you as a dish of rice cleaned of black grains and served with many gravies and curries seems to a householder or a householder’s son; and they will serve for your delight, relief, and ease, and for entering upon nibbāna.
“When you reflect upon these eight thoughts of a great person and gain at will … these four jhānas … then, while you dwell contentedly, your dwelling place at the foot of a tree will seem to you as a house with a peaked roof, plastered inside and out, draft-free, with bolts fastened and shutters closed, seems to a householder or a householder’s son; and it will serve for your delight, relief, and ease, and for entering upon nibbāna.
“When you reflect upon those eight thoughts of a great person and gain at will … these four jhānas … then, while you dwell contentedly, your bed and seat made of straw will seem to you as a couch spread with rugs, blankets, and covers, with an excellent covering of antelope hide, with a canopy above and red bolsters at both ends, seems to a householder or a householder’s son; and it will serve for your delight, relief, and ease, and for entering upon nibbāna.
“When you reflect upon these eight thoughts of a great person and gain at will … these four jhānas … then, while you dwell contentedly, your medicine of fermented cow’s urine will seem to you as various medicaments of ghee, butter, oil, honey, and molasses seem to a householder or a householder’s son; and it will serve for your delight, relief, and ease, and for entering upon nibbāna.
“Therefore, Anuruddha, you should also spend the next rains residence right here among the Cetis in the eastern bamboo park.”
“Yes, Bhante,” the Venerable Anuruddha replied.
Then, having exhorted the Venerable Anuruddha, just as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared before the Venerable Anuruddha among the Cetis in the eastern bamboo park and reappeared among the Bhaggas at Suṁsumāragira, in the deer park at Bhesakalā Grove. He then sat down on the seat prepared for him and addressed the bhikkhus: “I will teach you, bhikkhus, the eight thoughts of a great person. Listen and attend closely. I will speak.”
“Yes, Bhante,” the bhikkhus replied. The Blessed One said this:
“And what, bhikkhus, are the eight thoughts of a great person? (1) This Dhamma is for one with few desires, not for one with strong desires. (2) This Dhamma is for one who is content, not for one who is discontent. (3) This Dhamma is for one who resorts to solitude, not for one who delights in company. (4) This Dhamma is for one who is energetic, not for one who is lazy. (5) This Dhamma is for one with mindfulness established, not for one who is muddle-minded. (6) This Dhamma is for one who is concentrated, not for one who is unconcentrated. (7) This Dhamma is for one who is wise, not for one who is unwise. (8) This Dhamma is for one who delights in non-proliferation, who takes delight in non-proliferation, not for one who delights in proliferation, who takes delight in proliferation.
(1) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one with few desires, not for one with strong desires,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, when a bhikkhu is one with few desires, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be one with few desires.’ When he is content, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be one who is content.’ When he resorts to solitude, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be one who resorts to solitude.’ When he is energetic, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be energetic.’ When he is mindful, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be mindful.’ When he is concentrated, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be concentrated.’ When he is wise, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be wise.’ When he delights in non-proliferation, he does not desire: ‘Let people know me to be one who delights in non-proliferation.’ When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one with few desires, not for one with strong desires,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(2) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is content, not for one who is discontent,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and provisions for the sick. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is content, not for one who is discontent,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(3) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who resorts to solitude, not for one who delights in company,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, when a bhikkhu resorts to solitude, bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, male lay followers, female lay followers, kings, royal ministers, heads of other sects, and disciples belonging to other sects approach him. In each case, with a mind that slants, slopes, and inclines to seclusion, withdrawn, delighting in renunciation, he gives them a talk invariably concerned with dismissing them. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who resorts to solitude, not for one who delights in company,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(4) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is energetic, not for one who is lazy,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, a bhikkhu has aroused energy for abandoning unwholesome qualities and acquiring wholesome qualities; he is strong, firm in exertion, not casting off the duty of cultivating wholesome qualities. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is energetic, not for one who is lazy,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(5) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one with mindfulness established, not for one who is muddle-minded,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, a bhikkhu is mindful, possessing supreme mindfulness and alertness, one who remembers and recollects what was done and said long ago. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one with mindfulness established, not for one who is muddle-minded,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(6) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is concentrated, not for one who is unconcentrated,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, secluded from sensual pleasures … a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is concentrated, not for one who is unconcentrated,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(7) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is wise, not for one who is unwise,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, a bhikkhu is wise; he possesses the wisdom that discerns arising and passing away, which is noble and penetrative and leads to the complete destruction of suffering. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who is wise, not for one who is unwise,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.
(8) “When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who delights in non-proliferation, who takes delight in non-proliferation, not for one who delights in proliferation, who takes delight in proliferation,’ with reference to what was this said? Here, a bhikkhu’s mind launches out upon the cessation of proliferation, becomes placid, settles down, and is liberated in it. When it was said: ‘This Dhamma is for one who delights in non-proliferation, who takes delight in non-proliferation, not for one who delights in proliferation, who takes delight in proliferation,’ it is with reference to this that this was said.”
Then the Venerable Anuruddha spent the next rains residence right there among the Cetis in the eastern bamboo park. Dwelling alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent, and resolute, in no long time the Venerable Anuruddha realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the spiritual life for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelled in it. He directly knew: “Destroyed is birth, the spiritual life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming back to any state of being.” And the Venerable Anuruddha became one of the arahants.
On that occasion, when he had attained arahantship, the Venerable Anuruddha spoke these verses:
“Having understood my thoughts,
the unsurpassed teacher in the world
came to me by psychic potency
in a mind-made body.
“He taught me more
than my thoughts contained:
the Buddha, delighting in non-proliferation,
instructed me in non-proliferation.
“Having learned his Dhamma,
I delighted in his teaching.
I have gained the three true knowledges;
the Buddha’s teaching has been done.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่ป่าเภสกลามิคทายวัน เขตเมืองสุงสุมารคิระ แคว้นภัคคชนบท ก็โดยสมัยนั้น ท่านพระอนุรุทธะอยู่ที่วิหารปาจีนวังสทายวัน แคว้นเจดีย์ ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระอนุรุทธะหลีกออกเร้นอยู่ในที่ลับ เกิดความปริวิตกทางใจอย่างนี้ว่า
๑) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนามาก
๒) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สันโดษ มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ไม่สันโดษ
๓) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สงบสงัด มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ยินดีในการคลุกคลีด้วยหมู่คณะ
๔) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้ปรารภความเพียร มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้เกียจคร้าน
๕) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีสติหลงลืม
๖) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่น
๗) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีปัญญา มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ทรามปัญญา
ครั้งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบความปริวิตกทางใจของท่านพระอนุรุทธะแล้ว เสด็จจากเภสกลามิคทายวัน เขตเมืองสุงสุมารคิระ แคว้นภัคคชนบท ไปปรากฏเฉพาะหน้าท่านพระอนุรุทธะ ที่วิหารปาจีนวังสทายวัน เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษที่แข็งแรง เหยียดแขนที่งอ หรืองอแขนที่เหยียด ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับนั่งบนอาสนะที่จัดไว้ถวายแล้ว ท่านพระอนุรุทธะได้ถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะท่านพระอนุรุทธะว่า
สาธุ สาธุ อนุรุทธะ ถูกแล้ว อนุรุทธะ ที่เธอตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตกว่า
๑) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนามาก
๒) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สันโดษ มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ไม่สันโดษ
๓) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สงบสงัด มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ยินดีในการคลุกคลีด้วยหมู่คณะ
๔) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้ปรารภความเพียร มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้เกียจคร้าน
๕) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีสติหลงลืม
๖) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่น
๗) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีปัญญา มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ทรามปัญญา
อนุรุทธะ ถ้าอย่างนั้น เธอจงตรึกมหาปุริสวิตกข้อที่ ๘ นี้ว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความเนิ่นช้า.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ ในกาลนั้น เธอจักหวังได้ทีเดียวว่า เพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตก มีวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ ในกาลนั้น เธอจักหวังได้ทีเดียวว่า เพราะวิตกและวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ ในกาลนั้น เธอจักหวังได้ทีเดียวว่า เพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ ในกาลนั้น เธอจักหวังได้ทีเดียวว่า เพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ด้วย และจักเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ได้โดยไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันด้วย ในกาลนั้น ผ้าบังสุกุลจีวรจักปรากฏแก่เธอผู้สันโดษ ผู้อยู่ด้วยความยินดี ด้วยความไม่หวาดสะดุ้ง ด้วยความอยู่เป็นสุข ด้วยการก้าวลงสู่นิพพาน เปรียบเหมือนหีบใส่ผ้าของคหบดี หรือของบุตรแห่งคหบดีอันเต็มไปด้วยผ้าสีต่างๆ ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ด้วย และจักเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ได้โดยไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันด้วย ในกาลนั้น โภชนะ คือ คำข้าวที่ได้มาด้วยกำลังของปลีแข้ง จักปรากฏแก่เธอผู้สันโดษ ผู้อยู่ด้วยความยินดี ด้วยความไม่หวาดสะดุ้ง ด้วยความอยู่เป็นสุข ด้วยการก้าวลงสู่นิพพาน เปรียบเหมือนข้าวสุก (หุงจาก) ข้าวสาลีอันคัดเอาเม็ดดำออกแล้ว มีแกงและกับหลายอย่างของคหบดี หรือของบุตรแห่งคหบดี ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ด้วย และจักเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ได้โดยไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันด้วย ในกาลนั้น เสนาสนะ คือ โคนไม้ จักปรากฏแก่เธอผู้สันโดษ ผู้อยู่ด้วยความยินดี ด้วยความไม่หวาดสะดุ้ง ด้วยความอยู่เป็นสุข ด้วยการก้าวลงสู่นิพพาน เปรียบเหมือนเรือนยอดของคหบดี หรือของบุตรแห่งคหบดี ที่ฉาบทาไว้ดีแล้ว ปราศจากลม ลงลิ่มสลักแน่นหนา มีหน้าต่างปิดได้สนิท ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ด้วย และจักเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ได้โดยไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันด้วย ในกาลนั้น ที่นอนที่นั่งอันปูลาดด้วยหญ้า จักปรากฏแก่เธอผู้สันโดษ ผู้อยู่ด้วยความยินดี ด้วยความไม่หวาดสะดุ้ง ด้วยความอยู่เป็นสุข ด้วยการก้าวลงสู่นิพพาน เปรียบเหมือนบัลลังก์ของคหบดี หรือของบุตรแห่งคหบดี อันปูลาดด้วยผ้าโกเชาว์ขนยาว ปูลาดด้วยขนแกะสีขาว ปูลาดด้วยผ้าสัณฐานเป็นช่อดอกไม้ มีเครื่องปูลาดอย่างดีทำด้วยหนังชะมด เครื่องปูลาดมีเพดานด้านบน มีหมอนสีแดงวางไว้ทั้ง ๒ ข้าง ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น.
อนุรุทธะ ในกาลใด เธอจักตรึกถึงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ด้วย และจักเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ได้โดยไม่ลำบาก ซึ่งฌานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันด้วย ในกาลนั้น ยาดองด้วยน้ำมูตรเน่า จักปรากฏแก่เธอผู้สันโดษ ผู้อยู่ด้วยความยินดี ด้วยความไม่หวาดสะดุ้ง ด้วยความอยู่เป็นสุข ด้วยการก้าวลงสู่นิพพาน เปรียบเหมือนเภสัชนานาชนิด คือ เนยใส เนยข้น น้ำมัน น้ำผึ้ง น้ำอ้อย ของคหบดี หรือของบุตรแห่งคหบดี ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น.
อนุรุทธะ ถ้าอย่างนั้น เธอพึงอยู่จำพรรษาที่วิหารปาจีนวังสทายวัน แคว้นเจดีย์นี้แหละต่อไปอีกเถิด.
ท่านพระอนุรุทธะทูลรับพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ลำดับนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสสอนท่านพระอนุรุทธะด้วยพระโอวาทนี้แล้ว เสด็จจากวิหารปาจีนวังสทายวัน แคว้นเจดีย์ ไปปรากฏที่ป่าเภสกลามิคทายวัน เขตเมืองสุงสุมารคิระ แคว้นภัคคะ เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษที่แข็งแรง เหยียดแขนที่งอ หรืองอแขนที่เหยียด ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับนั่งบนอาสนะที่จัดไว้ถวายแล้ว ครั้นแล้วตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราจักแสดงมหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการ แก่เธอทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงฟังธรรมนั้น จงใส่ใจให้ดี เราจักกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็มหาปุริสวิตก ๘ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนามาก
๒) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สันโดษ มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ไม่สันโดษ
๓) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สงบสงัด มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ยินดีในการคลุกคลีด้วยหมู่คณะ
๔) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้ปรารภความเพียร มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้เกียจคร้าน
๕) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีสติหลงลืม
๖) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่น
๗) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีปัญญา มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ทรามปัญญา
๘) ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความเนิ่นช้า.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนามาก เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย เป็นผู้สันโดษ ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้สันโดษ เป็นผู้สงบสงัด ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้สงบสงัด เป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียร ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียร เป็นผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น เป็นผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น เป็นผู้มีปัญญา ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้มีปัญญา เป็นผู้ยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า ย่อมไม่ปรารถนาว่า ขอชนทั้งหลายพึงรู้จักเราว่า เป็นผู้ยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนาน้อย มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีความปรารถนามาก ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สันโดษ มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ไม่สันโดษ เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้สันโดษด้วยจีวร บิณฑบาต เสนาสนะ และคิลานปัจจัยเภสัชบริขาร ตามมีตามได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สันโดษ มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ไม่สันโดษ ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สงบสงัด มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ยินดีในการคลุกคลีด้วยหมู่คณะ เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกภิกษุ ภิกษุณี อุบาสก อุบาสิกา พระราชา มหาอำมาตย์ของพระราชา เดียรถีย์ และสาวกแห่งเดียรถีย์ เข้าไปหาภิกษุผู้สงบสงัดนั้นอยู่ ภิกษุมีจิตน้อมไปในวิเวก โน้มไปในวิเวก โอนไปในวิเวก ตั้งอยู่ในวิเวก ยินดียิ่งในเนกขัมมะ ย่อมกล่าวกถาอันประกอบด้วยถ้อยคำเกี่ยวกับการส่งกลับในสมาคมนั้นโดยแท้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้สงบสงัด มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ยินดีในการคลุกคลีด้วยหมู่คณะ ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้ปรารภความเพียร มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้เกียจคร้าน เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียร เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เพื่อความถึงพร้อมแห่งกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย มีกำลัง มีความบากบั่น มั่นคง ไม่ทอดทิ้งธุระในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้ปรารภความเพียร มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้เกียจคร้าน ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีสติหลงลืม เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีสติ ประกอบด้วยสติเป็นเครื่องรักษาตนอย่างยิ่ง ระลึกได้ ตามระลึกได้ ถึงสิ่งที่ทำ และคำที่พูดแม้นานแล้วได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีสติตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีสติหลงลืม ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่น เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตก มีวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะวิตกและวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่น มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่น ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีปัญญา มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ทรามปัญญา เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีปัญญา ประกอบด้วยปัญญาที่รู้ถึงความเกิดขึ้นและความดับไป อันเป็นอริยะ ชำแรกกิเลส ให้ถึงความสิ้นทุกข์โดยชอบ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้มีปัญญา มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้ทรามปัญญา ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความเนิ่นช้า เราอาศัยอะไรกล่าว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย จิตของภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมแล่นไป ย่อมเลื่อมใส ย่อมตั้งอยู่ได้ ย่อมหลุดพ้นไป ในความดับแห่งธรรมอันเป็นเหตุให้เนิ่นช้า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่เรากล่าวแล้วว่า ธรรมนี้เป็นธรรมของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความไม่เนิ่นช้า มิใช่ของบุคคลผู้พอใจและยินดีในความเนิ่นช้า ดังนี้ เราอาศัยข้อนี้กล่าวแล้ว.
ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระอนุรุทธะอยู่จำพรรษาที่วิหารปาจีนวังสทายวัน แคว้นเจดีย์นั้นแหละ ต่อไปอีก ครั้งนั้น ท่านพระอนุรุทธะหลีกออกจากหมู่อยู่ผู้เดียว เป็นผู้ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียร มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมอยู่ ไม่นานนัก ก็กระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งที่สุดแห่งพรหมจรรย์อันไม่มีอะไรยิ่งกว่า ซึ่งเป็นที่ปรารถนาของกุลบุตรทั้งหลาย ผู้ออกเรือนบวชเป็นบรรพชิตโดยถูกต้อง ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่ ย่อมรู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มีอีก ดังนี้ ก็ท่านพระอนุรุทธะได้เป็นพระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งในจำนวนพระอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย ลำดับนั้น ท่านพระอนุรุทธะบรรลุอรหัตแล้ว ได้กล่าวคาถานี้ไว้ในเวลานั้นว่า
พระศาสดาผู้เป็นเยี่ยมในโลก ทรงทราบความดำริของเราแล้ว
ได้เข้ามาหาเราด้วยฤทธิ์ทางกายอันสำเร็จด้วยใจ.
พระองค์ได้ทรงแสดงธรรมอันยิ่งกว่าความดำริของเราเท่าที่ดำริไว้
พระพุทธเจ้าผู้ยินดีแล้วในธรรมอันไม่เป็นเหตุให้เนิ่นช้า
ได้ทรงแสดงซึ่งธรรมอันไม่เป็นเหตุให้เนิ่นช้า.
เราได้รู้ทั่วถึงธรรมของพระองค์แล้ว ยินดีในคำสั่งสอนอยู่
เราได้บรรลุวิชชา ๓ แล้วโดยลำดับ
คำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าเราได้กระทำตามแล้ว.
