4.5. The Truths
… Furthermore, a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of principles with respect to the four noble truths. And how does a mendicant meditate observing an aspect of principles with respect to the four noble truths?
It’s when a mendicant truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.’
4.5.1. The Truth of Suffering
And what is the noble truth of suffering?
Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; association with the disliked is suffering; separation from the liked is suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.
And what is rebirth? The rebirth, inception, conception, reincarnation, manifestation of the sets of phenomena, and acquisition of the sense fields of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called rebirth.
And what is old age? The old age, decrepitude, broken teeth, grey hair, wrinkly skin, diminished vitality, and failing faculties of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called old age.
And what is death? The passing away, perishing, disintegration, demise, mortality, death, decease, breaking up of the aggregates, laying to rest of the corpse, and cutting off of the life faculty of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called death.
And what is sorrow? The sorrow, sorrowing, state of sorrow, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering. This is called sorrow.
And what is lamentation? The wail, lament, wailing, lamenting, state of wailing and lamentation in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering. This is called lamentation.
And what is pain? Physical pain, physical displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from physical contact. This is called pain.
And what is sadness? Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from mental contact. This is called sadness.
And what is distress? The stress, distress, state of stress and distress in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering. This is called distress.
And what is meant by ‘association with the disliked is suffering’? There are sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts that are unlikable, undesirable, and disagreeable. And there are those who want to harm, injure, disturb, and threaten you. The coming together with these, the joining, inclusion, mixing with them: this is what is meant by ‘association with the disliked is suffering’.
And what is meant by ‘separation from the liked is suffering’? There are sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts that are likable, desirable, and agreeable. And there are those who want to benefit, help, comfort, and protect you. The division from these, the disconnection, segregation, and parting from them: this is what is meant by ‘separation from the liked is suffering’.
And what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’? In sentient beings who are liable to be reborn, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not liable to be reborn! If only rebirth would not come to us!’ But you can’t get that by wishing. This is what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering.’ In sentient beings who are liable to grow old … fall ill … die … experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not liable to experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress! If only sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress would not come to us!’ But you can’t get that by wishing. This is what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering.’
And what is meant by ‘in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering’? They are the grasping aggregates that consist of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. This is what is meant by ‘in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering’.
This is called the noble truth of suffering.
4.5.2. The Origin of Suffering
And what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?
It’s the craving that leads to future rebirth, mixed up with relishing and greed, looking for enjoyment in various different realms. That is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving to end existence.
But where does that craving arise and where does it settle? Whatever in the world seems nice and pleasant, it is there that craving arises and settles.
And what in the world seems nice and pleasant? The eye in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles. The ear … nose … tongue … body … mind in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Sights … sounds … smells … tastes … touches … thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Eye consciousness … ear consciousness … nose consciousness … tongue consciousness … body consciousness … mind consciousness in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Eye contact … ear contact … nose contact … tongue contact … body contact … mind contact in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Feeling born of eye contact … feeling born of ear contact … feeling born of nose contact … feeling born of tongue contact … feeling born of body contact … feeling born of mind contact in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Perception of sights … perception of sounds … perception of smells … perception of tastes … perception of touches … perception of thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Intention regarding sights … intention regarding sounds … intention regarding smells … intention regarding tastes … intention regarding touches … intention regarding thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Craving for sights … craving for sounds … craving for smells … craving for tastes … craving for touches … craving for thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Thoughts about sights … thoughts about sounds … thoughts about smells … thoughts about tastes … thoughts about touches … thoughts about thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
Considerations regarding sights … considerations regarding sounds … considerations regarding smells … considerations regarding tastes … considerations regarding touches … considerations regarding thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.
This is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering.
4.5.3. The Cessation of Suffering
And what is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?
It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not adhering to it.
Whatever in the world seems nice and pleasant, it is there that craving is given up and ceases.
And what in the world seems nice and pleasant? The eye in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving is given up and ceases. …
Considerations regarding thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving is given up and ceases.
This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.
4.5.4. The Path
And what is the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering?
It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
And what is right view? Knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. This is called right view.
And what is right thought? Thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. This is called right thought.
And what is right speech? The refraining from lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and talking nonsense. This is called right speech.
And what is right action? Refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct. This is called right action.
And what is right livelihood? It’s when a noble disciple gives up wrong livelihood and earns a living by right livelihood. This is called right livelihood.
And what is right effort? It’s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. This is called right effort.
And what is right mindfulness? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. This is called right mindfulness.
And what is right immersion? It’s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and confidence, and unified mind, without placing the mind and keeping it connected. And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’ Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called right immersion.
This is called the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. …

The Section about the Four Truths
… Moreover, monks, a monk dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things, in the Four Noble Truths.
And how, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things, in the Four Noble Truths?
Here, monks, a monk knows as it really is “this is Suffering”, he knows as it really is “this is the Origination of Suffering”, he knows as it really is “this is the Cessation of Suffering”, he knows as it really is “this is the Practice Leading to the Cessation of Suffering”.
The Truth of Suffering
Now what, monks, is the Noble Truth of Suffering?
Birth is suffering also old age is suffering also death is suffering also grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, is suffering also being joined to what is not liked is suffering, also being parted from what is liked is suffering, also not to obtain that which one longs for is suffering in brief, the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment are suffering.
Now what, monks, is birth?
For the various beings in the various classes of beings (there is) birth, being born, appearing, turning up; the manifestation of the constituents (of mind and body), the acquisition of the sense spheres: this, monks, is called birth.
Now what, monks, is old age?
For the various beings in the various classes of beings there is old age, agedness, broken teeth, greying hair, and wrinkled skin; the dwindling away of the life span, the decay of the sense faculties: this, monks, is called old age.
Now what, monks, is death?
For the various beings in the various classes of beings there is a fall, a falling away, a breaking up, a disappearance, a dying, a death, a making of time; the break up of the constituents (of mind and body), the throwing off of the body; the cutting off of the life faculty: this, monks, is called death.
Now what, monks, is grief?
For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there is grief, grieving, the state of grieving, inner grief, great inner grief: this, monks, is called grief.
Now what, monks, is lamentation?
For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there are laments, great laments, lamenting, great lamenting, the state of lamenting, the state of great lamentation: this, monks, is called lamentation.
Now what, monks, is pain?
That, monks, which is bodily pain, bodily disagreeableness, pain born of contact with the body, disagreeable feeling: this, monks, is called pain.
Now what, monks, is sorrow?
That, monks, which is mental pain, mental disagreeableness, pain born of contact with the mind, disagreeable feeling: this, monks, is called sorrow.
Now what, monks, is despair?
For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there is desponding, despairing, the state of despondency, the state of despair: this, monks, is called despair.
And what, monks, is the suffering from being joined to what is not liked?
Here, for that one who has unwanted, unlovely, unpleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles, and thoughts; or, for that one who has those who do not desire his welfare, benefit, comfort and security—(and then) having meetings, assembly, connection, and interaction with them: this, monks, is called the suffering from being joined to what is not liked.
And what, monks, is the suffering from being parted from what is liked?
Here, for that one who has wanted, lovely, pleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles, and thoughts; or, for that one who has those who do desire his welfare, benefit, comfort and security—mothers, or fathers, or brothers, or sisters, or friends, or companions, or blood relatives—(and then) not having meetings, assembly, connection, and interaction with them: this, monks, is called the suffering from being parted from what is liked.
Now what, monks, is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for?
To those beings subject to birth, monks, a longing like this arises: “Oh, might we not be subject to birth, may birth not come to us!” But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.
To those beings subject to old age, monks, a longing like this arises:
“Oh, might we not be subject to old age, may old age not come to us!” But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.
To those beings subject to sickness, monks, a longing like this arises:
“Oh, might we not be subject to sickness, may sickness not come to us!” But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for. To those beings subject to death, monks, a longing like this arises: “Oh, might we not be subject to death, may death not come to us!” But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.
To those beings subject to grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, monks, a longing like this arises:
“Oh, might we not be subject to grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, may grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, not come to us!” But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.
Now what, monks, in brief, are the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment which are suffering?
They are as follows:
the form constituent that is fuel for attachment
the feelings constituent that is fuel for attachment
the perceptions constituent that is fuel for attachment
the (mental) processes constituent that is fuel for attachment
the consciousness constituent that is fuel for attachment.
These, monks, are called, in brief, the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment which are suffering.
This, monks, is called the Noble Truth of Suffering.
The Truth of Origination
And what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Origination of Suffering?
It is that craving which leads to the continuation of existence, which is connected with enjoyment and passion, greatly enjoying this and that, as follows:
craving in regard to sense pleasures
craving in regard to the continuation of existence
craving in regard to the discontinuation of existence.
Now where, monks, does that craving when it is arising arise? When settling where does it settle?
In the world there is that which is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.
And in the world what is likeable and pleasing?
In the world the eye is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.
In the world the ear is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.
In the world the nose is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.
In the world the tongue is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.

And what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering?
It is the complete fading away and cessation without remainder of that craving—liberation, letting go, release, and non-adherence.
Now where, monks, is that craving when it is being abandoned (actually) abandoned? When ceasing, where does it cease?
In the world there is that which is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is being abandoned is abandoned, here when ceasing it ceases.
And in the world what is likeable and pleasing?
In the world the eye is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is being abandoned is abandoned, here when ceasing it ceases.
In the world the ear is likeable and pleasing—here this craving when it is being abandoned is abandoned, here when ceasing it ceases.

The Truth of the Path
Now what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Practice Leading to the Cessation of Suffering?
It is this noble path with eight factors, as follows: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood right endeavour, right mindfulness, right concentration.
Now what, monks, is right view?
That, monks, which is knowledge about suffering knowledge about the origination of suffering knowledge about the cessation of suffering knowledge about the practice leading to the cessation of suffering.
This, monks, is called right view.
Now what, monks, is right thought?
The thought of renunciation, the thought of good-will, the thought of non-violence.
This, monks, is called right thought.
Now what, monks, is right speech?
Refraining from false speech refraining from malicious speech refraining from rough speech refraining from frivolous talk.
This, monks, is called right speech.
Now what, monks, is right action?
Refraining from killing living creatures refraining from taking what has not been given refraining from sexual misconduct.
This, monks, is called right action.
Now what, monks, is right livelihood?
Here, monks, a noble disciple, having abandoned a wrong way of livelihood, makes his living by a right way of livelihood.
This, monks, is called right livelihood.
Now what, monks, is right endeavour?
Here, monks, a monk regarding bad and unwholesome thoughts that have not yet arisen generates desire for their non-arising, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.
Regarding bad and unwholesome things that have already arisen he generates desire for their abandonment, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.
He generates desire for the arising of wholesome things that have not yet arisen, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.
Regarding wholesome things that have arisen he generates desire for their endurance, persistence, multiplication, extension, development, and fulfilment, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.
This, monks, is called right endeavour.
Now what, monks, is right mindfulness?
Here, monks, a monk dwells contemplating (the nature of) the body in the body, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.
He dwells contemplating (the nature of) feelings in feelings, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.
He dwells contemplating (the nature of) the mind in the mind, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.
He dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.
This, monks, is called right mindfulness.
Now what, monks, is right concentration?
Here, monks, a monk, quite secluded from sense desires, secluded from unwholesome things, having thinking, reflection, and the happiness and joy born of seclusion, dwells having attained the first absorption.
With the calming down of thinking and reflection, with internal clarity, and one-pointedness of mind, being without thinking, without reflection, having the happiness and joy born of concentration, he dwells having attained the second absorption.
With the fading away of joy he dwells equanimous, mindful, fully aware, experiencing happiness through the body, about which the Noble Ones declare: “He dwells pleasantly, mindful, and equanimous,” he dwells having attained the third absorption.
Having abandoned pleasure, abandoned pain, and with the previous passing away of mental happiness and sorrow, without pain, without pleasure, and with complete purity of mindfulness owing to equanimity, he dwells having attained the fourth absorption.
This, monks, is called right concentration.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีปกติพิจารณาเห็นธรรมในธรรมทั้งหลาย คือ อริยสัจ ๔ อยู่นั้น เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงว่า นี้คือทุกข์ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงว่า นี้คือเหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงว่า นี้คือความดับของทุกข์ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงว่า นี้คือข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อริยสัจคือทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความเกิดก็เป็นทุกข์ ความแก่ก็เป็นทุกข์ ความตายก็เป็นทุกข์ ความเศร้าโศก (โสกะ) ความร่ำไรรำพัน (ปริเทวะ) ความทุกข์กาย (ทุกข์) ความทุกข์ใจ (โทมนัส) ความคับแค้นใจ (อุปายาส) ก็เป็นทุกข์ ความประสบกับสิ่งไม่เป็นที่รักก็เป็นทุกข์ ความพลัดพรากจากสิ่งเป็นที่รักก็เป็นทุกข์ ปรารถนาสิ่งใดแล้วไม่ได้สิ่งนั้นก็เป็นทุกข์ กล่าวโดยย่อ อุปาทานขันธ์ทั้ง ๕ เป็นทุกข์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเกิด เป็นอย่าง คือ การเกิด (ชาติ) การกำเนิด (สญฺชาติ) การก้าวลง (โอกฺกนฺติ) การบังเกิด (นิพฺพตฺติ) การบังเกิดโดยยิ่ง (อภินิพฺพตฺติ) ภาวะแห่งความปรากฏของขันธ์ทั้งหลาย (ขนฺธานํ ปาตุภาโว) การที่สัตว์ได้อายตนะทั้งหลาย (อายตนานํ ปฏิลาโภ) ในจำพวกสัตว์นั้นๆ ของสัตว์เหล่านั้นๆ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความเกิด.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความแก่ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความแก่ (ชรา) ความคร่ำคร่า (ชีรณตา) ความมีฟันหลุด (ขณฺฑิจฺจํ) ความมีผมหงอก (ปาลิจฺจํ) ความมีหนังเหี่ยว (วลิตจตา) ความสิ้นไปๆ แห่งอายุ (อายุโน สํหานิ) ความแก่รอบแห่งอินทรีย์ทั้งหลาย (อินฺทฺริยานํ ปริปาโก) ในสัตว์จำพวกนั้นๆ ของสัตว์เหล่านั้นๆ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความแก่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความตาย เป็นอย่างไร คือ การจุติ (จุติ) ความเคลื่อน (จวนตา) การแตกสลาย (เภโท) การหายไป (อนฺตรธานํ) การวายชีพ (มจฺจุ) การตาย (มรณํ) การทำกาละ (กาลกิริยา) การแตกแห่งขันธ์ทั้งหลาย (ขนฺธานํ เภโท) การทอดทิ้งร่าง (กเฬวรสฺส นิกฺเขโป) การขาดแห่งอินทรีย์คือชีวิต (ชีวิตินฺทฺริยสฺส อุปจฺเฉโท) จากจำพวกสัตว์นั้นๆ ของสัตว์เหล่านั้นๆ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความตาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเศร้าโศก (ความแห้งใจ) เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความเศร้าโศก (โสโก) การเศร้าโศก (โสจนา) ภาวะแห่งการเศร้าโศก (โสจิตตฺตํ) ความเศร้าโศกในภายใน (อนฺโตโสโก) ความเศร้าโศกทั่วในภายใน (อนฺโตปริโสโก) ของบุคคลผู้ประกอบแล้วด้วยความวิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือของบุคคลผู้ถูกความทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งกระทบแล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความเศร้าโศก.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความร่ำไรรำพัน เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความคร่ำครวญ (อาเทโว) ความร่ำไรรำพัน (ปริเทโว) การคร่ำครวญ (อาเทวนา) การร่ำไรรำพัน (ปริเทวนา) ภาวะแห่งผู้คร่ำครวญ (อาเทวิตตฺตํ) ภาวะแห่งผู้ร่ำไรรำพัน (ปริเทวิตตฺตํ) ของบุคคลผู้ประกอบแล้วด้วยความวิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือของบุคคลผู้ถูกความทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งกระทบแล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความร่ำไรรำพัน.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความทุกข์กาย เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความทนได้ยากที่เป็นไปทางกาย (กายิกํ ทุกฺขํ) ความไม่ผาสุกที่เป็นไปทางกาย (กายิกํ อสาตํ) ความทนได้ยาก ความรู้สึกที่ไม่ผาสุก อันเกิดจากความกระทบทางกาย (กายสมฺผสฺสชํ ทุกฺขํ อสาตํ เวทยิตํ) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความทุกข์กาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความทุกข์ใจ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความทนได้ยากที่เป็นไปทางใจ (เจตสิกํ ทุกฺขํ) ความไม่ผาสุกที่เป็นไปทางใจ (เจตสิกํ อสาตํ) ความทนได้ยาก ความรู้สึกที่ไม่ผาสุก อันเกิดจากความกระทบทางใจ (มโนสมฺผสฺสชํ ทุกฺขํ อสาตํเวทยิตํ) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความทุกข์ใจ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความคับแค้นใจ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ความกลุ้มใจ ความคับแค้นใจ ภาวะแห่งผู้กลุ้มใจ ภาวะแห่งผู้คับแค้นใจ ของบุคคลผู้ประกอบแล้วด้วยความวิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือของบุคคลผู้ถูกความทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งกระทบแล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความคับแค้นใจ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความประสบกับสิ่งไม่เป็นที่รักเป็นทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ในกรณีนี้ รูป เสียง กลิ่น รส โผฏฐัพพะเหล่าใด ที่ไม่น่าปรารถนา ไม่น่ารักใคร่ ไม่น่าพอใจ มีแก่ผู้นั้น หรือว่า ชนเหล่าใดเป็นผู้ไม่หวังประโยชน์ ไม่หวังความเกื้อกูล ไม่หวังความผาสุก ไม่หวังความเกษมจากโยคะต่อเขา การที่ต้องไปด้วยกัน การที่ต้องมาด้วยกัน การต้องอยู่ร่วมกัน ความปะปนกันกับด้วยอารมณ์ หรือกับบุคคลเหล่านั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าความประสบกับสิ่งไม่เป็นที่รักเป็นทุกข์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความพลัดพรากจากสิ่งเป็นที่รักเป็นทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ในกรณีนี้ รูป เสียง กลิ่น รส โผฎฐัพพะเหล่าใด ที่น่าปรารถนา น่ารักใคร่ น่าพอใจ มีแก่ผู้นั้น หรือว่าชนเหล่าใดเป็นผู้หวังประโยชน์ หวังความเกื้อกูล หวังความผาสุก หวังความเกษมจากโยะคต่อเขา คือ มารดาบิดา พี่ชายน้องชาย พี่สาวน้องสาว มิตร อำมาตย์ ญาติสาโลหิตก็ตาม การไม่ได้ไปร่วมกัน การไม่ได้มาร่วมกัน การไม่ได้อยู่ร่วมกัน ความไม่ได้ปะปนกันกับด้วยอารมณ์ หรือกับบุคคลเหล่านั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ความพลัดพรากจากสิ่งเป็นที่รักเป็นทุกข์.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กล่าวโดยย่ออุปาทานขันธ์ทั้ง ๕ เป็นทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร คือ อุปาทานขันธ์คือรูป อุปาทานขันธ์คือเวทนา อุปาทานขันธ์คือสัญญา อุปาทานขันธ์คือสังขาร อุปาทานขันธ์ คือวิญญาณ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เหล่านี้เรียกว่า กล่าวโดยย่ออุปาทานขันธ์ทั้ง ๕ เป็นทุกข์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า อริยสัจคือทุกข์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อริยสัจคือเหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร ตัณหานี้ใด ที่ทำให้มีการเกิดอีก อันประกอบด้วยความกำหนัดเพราะอำนาจแห่งความเพลิน มีปกติทำให้เพลิดเพลินในอารมณ์นั้นๆ นี้คือ กามตัณหา ภวตัณหา วิภวตัณหา.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่ไหน เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่ไหน สิ่งใดเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่นั้น เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้น ก็อะไรเล่าเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก.
ตาเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่นั้น เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้น หู … จมูก … ลิ้น … กาย … ใจเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่นั้น เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้น.
รูปทั้งหลายเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่นั้น เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้น เสียงทั้งหลาย … กลิ่นทั้งหลาย … รสทั้งหลาย … โผฏฐัพพะทั้งหลาย … ธรรมทั้งหลายเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อเกิดขึ้น ย่อมเกิดขึ้นในที่นั้น เมื่อตั้งอยู่ ย่อมตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้น.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ตัณหานั้น เมื่อจะละ ย่อมละได้ในที่ไหน เมื่อจะดับ ย่อมดับได้ในที่ไหน สิ่งใดเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก ตัณหานั้น เมื่อจะละ ย่อมละได้ในที่นั้น เมื่อจะดับ ย่อมดับได้ในที่นั้น ก็อะไรเล่าเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ยินดีในโลก.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อริยสัจคือข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์ เป็นอย่างไร คือ อริยมรรคมีองค์แปดนี้นั่นเอง นั่นคือ สัมมาทิฏฐิ สัมมาสังกัปปะ สัมมาวาจา สัมมากัมมันตะ สัมมาอาชีวะ สัมมาวายามะ สัมมาสติ สัมมาสมาธิ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาทิฏฐิ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความรู้ในทุกข์ ความรู้ในเหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ ความรู้ในความดับของทุกข์ ความรู้ในข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์ อันใด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาทิฏฐิ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาสังกัปปะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความดำริในการออกจากกาม ความดำริในการไม่พยาบาท ความดำริในการไม่เบียดเบียน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสังกัปปะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาวาจา เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย การเว้นจากการพูดเท็จ การเว้นจากการพูดยุให้แตกกัน การเว้นจากการพูดหยาบ การเว้นจากการพูดเพ้อเจ้อ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า สัมมาวาจา.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมากัมมันตะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย การเว้นจากการฆ่าสัตว์ การเว้นจากการถือเอาสิ่งของที่เจ้าของไม่ได้ให้ การเว้นจากการประพฤติผิดในกามทั้งหลาย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมากัมมันตะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาอาชีวะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกในกรณีนี้ละการหาเลี้ยงชีวิตที่ผิด สำเร็จความเป็นอยู่ด้วยการหาเลี้ยงชีวิตที่ถูกต้อง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาอาชีวะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาวายาวะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมปลูกความพอใจ พยายาม ปรารภความเพียร ประคองจิต ตั้งจิตไว้ เพื่อความไม่เกิดขึ้น แห่งอกุศลธรรมอันเป็นบาปทั้งหลาย ที่ยังไม่เกิดขึ้น ย่อมปลูกความพอใจ พยายาม ปรารภความเพียร ประคองจิต ตั้งจิตไว้ เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมอันเป็นบาปทั้งหลาย ที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ย่อมปลูกความพอใจ พยายาม ปรารภความเพียร ประคองจิต ตั้งจิตไว้ เพื่อความเกิดขึ้น แห่งกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ที่ยังไม่เกิดขึ้น ย่อมปลูกความพอใจ พยายาม ปรารภความเพียร ประคองจิต ตั้งจิตไว้ เพื่อความตั้งมั่น เพื่อความไม่ลบเลือน เพื่อความงอกงามยิ่งขึ้น เพื่อความไพบูลย์ เพื่อความเจริญ เพื่อความบริบูรณ์ แห่งกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาวายามะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาสติ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นกายในกายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นเวทนาในเวทนาทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นจิตในจิตอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นธรรมในธรรมทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัมมาสมาธิ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตกวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะวิตกวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสมาธิ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า อริยสัจคือข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับของทุกข์.
