Contemplation to become disillusioned with contact.

At Sāvatthī.
“Mendicants, when it comes to this body made up of the four principal states, an unlearned ordinary person might become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed. Why is that? This body made up of the four principal states is seen to accumulate and disperse, to be taken up and laid to rest. That’s why, when it comes to this body, an unlearned ordinary person might become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed. But when it comes to that which is called ‘mind’ and also ‘sentience’ and also ‘consciousness’, an unlearned ordinary person is unable to become disillusioned, dispassionate, or freed. Why is that? Because for a long time they’ve been attached to it, thought of it as their own, and mistaken it: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self.’ That’s why, when it comes to this mind, an unlearned ordinary person is unable to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed.
But an unlearned ordinary person would be better off taking this body made up of the four principal states to be their self, rather than the mind. Why is that? This body made up of the four principal states is seen to last for a year, or for two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, or a hundred years, or even longer. But that which is called ‘mind’ and also ‘sentience’ and also ‘consciousness’ arises as one thing and ceases as another all day and all night.
In this case, a learned noble disciple carefully and rationally applies the mind to dependent origination itself: ‘When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises. When this doesn’t exist, that is not; due to the cessation of this, that ceases. That is: Pleasant feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, the corresponding pleasant feeling ceases and stops. Painful feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as painful. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as painful, the corresponding painful feeling ceases and stops. Neutral feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as neutral. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as neutral, the corresponding neutral feeling ceases and stops.
When you rub two sticks together, heat is generated and fire is produced. But when you part the sticks and lay them aside, any corresponding heat ceases and stops. In the same way, pleasant feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, the corresponding pleasant feeling ceases and stops. Painful feeling … Neutral feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as neutral. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as neutral, the corresponding neutral feeling ceases and stops.
Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’”

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There he addressed the monks, “Monks, an uninstructed run-of-the-mill person might grow disenchanted with this body composed of the four great elements, might grow dispassionate toward it, might gain release from it. Why is that? Because the growth & decline, the taking up & putting down of this body composed of the four great elements are apparent. Thus the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person might grow disenchanted, might grow dispassionate, might gain release there.
“But as for what’s called ‘mind,’ ‘intellect,’ or ‘consciousness,’ the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person is unable to grow disenchanted with it, unable to grow dispassionate toward it, unable to gain release from it. Why is that? For a long time this has been relished, appropriated, and grasped by the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person as, ‘This is me, this is my self, this is what I am.’ Thus the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person is unable to grow disenchanted with it, unable to grow dispassionate toward it, unable to gain release from it.
“It would be better for the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person to hold to the body composed of the four great elements, rather than the mind, as the self. Why is that? Because this body composed of the four great elements is seen standing for a year, two years, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred years or more. But what’s called ‘mind,’ ‘intellect,’ or ‘consciousness’ by day and by night arises as one thing and ceases as another. Just as a monkey, swinging through a forest wilderness, grabs a branch. Letting go of that, it grabs another branch. Letting go of that, it grabs another one. Letting go of that, it grabs another one. In the same way, what’s called ‘mind,’ ‘intellect,’ or ‘consciousness’ by day and by night arises as one thing and ceases as another.
“The instructed disciple of the noble ones, (however,) attends carefully & appropriately right there at the dependent co-arising: ‘When this is, that is. From the arising of this comes the arising of that. When this isn’t, that isn’t. From the cessation of this comes the cessation of that.’
“In dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as pleasure, monks, there arises a feeling of pleasure. When sensing a feeling of pleasure, one discerns that ‘I am sensing a feeling of pleasure.’ One discerns that ‘With the cessation of that very sensory contact that is to be felt as pleasure, the concomitant feeling—the feeling of pleasure that has arisen in dependence on the sensory contact that is to be felt as pleasure—ceases, is stilled.’ In dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as pain.… In dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as neither pleasure nor pain, there arises a feeling of neither pleasure nor pain. When sensing a feeling of neither pleasure nor pain, one discerns that ‘I am sensing a feeling of neither pleasure nor pain.’ One discerns that ‘With the cessation of that very sensory contact that is to be felt as neither pleasure nor pain, the concomitant feeling—the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain that has arisen in dependence on the sensory contact that is to be felt as neither pleasure nor pain—ceases, is stilled.’
“Just as when, from the friction & conjunction of two fire sticks, heat is born and fire appears, and from the separation & disjunction of those very same fire sticks, the concomitant heat ceases, is stilled; in the same way, in dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as pleasure, there arises a feeling of pleasure.… In dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as pain.… In dependence on a sensory contact that is to be felt as neither pleasure nor pain, there arises a feeling of neither pleasure nor pain.… One discerns that ‘With the cessation of that very sensory contact that is to be felt as neither pleasure nor pain, the concomitant feeling… ceases, is stilled.’
“Seeing thus, the instructed disciple of the noble ones grows disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, disenchanted with perception, disenchanted with fabrications, disenchanted with consciousness. Disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion, he is released. With release, there is the knowledge, ‘Released.’ He discerns that ‘Birth is ended, the holy life fulfilled, the task done. There is nothing further for this world.’”

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Savatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anathapiṇḍika’s Park….
“Bhikkhus, the uninstructed worldling might experience revulsion towards this body composed of the four great elements; he might become dispassionate towards it and be liberated from it. For what reason? Because growth and decline is seen in this body composed of the four great elements, it is seen being taken up and laid aside. Therefore the uninstructed worldling might experience revulsion towards this body composed of the four great elements; he might become dispassionate towards it and be liberated from it.
“But, bhikkhus, as to that which is called ‘mind’ and ‘mentality’ and ‘consciousness’ —the uninstructed worldling is unable to experience revulsion towards it, unable to become dispassionate towards it and be liberated from it. For what reason? Because for a long time this has been held to by him, appropriated, and grasped thus: ‘This is mine, this I am, this is my self.’ Therefore the uninstructed worldling is unable to experience revulsion towards it, unable to become dispassionate towards it and be liberated from it.
“It would be better, bhikkhus, for the uninstructed worldling to take as self this body composed of the four great elements rather than the mind. For what reason? Because this body composed of the four great elements is seen standing for one year, for two years, for three, four, five, or ten years, for twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty years, for a hundred years, or even longer. But that which is called ‘mind’ and ‘mentality’ and ‘consciousness’ arises as one thing and ceases as another by day and by night.
“Therein, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple attends closely and carefully to dependent origination itself thus: ‘When this exists, that comes to be; with the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that does not come to be; with the cessation of this, that ceases.’ Bhikkhus, in dependence on a contact to be experienced as pleasant, a pleasant feeling arises. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, the corresponding feeling—the pleasant feeling that arose in dependence on that contact to be experienced as pleasant—ceases and subsides. In dependence on a contact to be experienced as painful, a painful feeling arises. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as painful, the corresponding feeling—the painful feeling that arose in dependence on that contact to be experienced as painful—ceases and subsides. In dependence on a contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant, a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling arises. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant, the corresponding feeling—the neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling that arose in dependence on that contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant—ceases and subsides.
“Bhikkhus, just as heat is generated and fire is produced from the conjunction and friction of two fire-sticks, but with the separation and laying aside of the sticks the resultant heat ceases and subsides; so too, in dependence on a contact to be experienced as pleasant…acontact to be experienced as painful…a contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant, a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling arises…. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant, the corresponding feeling … ceases and subsides.
“Seeing thus, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple experiences revulsion towards contact, revulsion towards feeling, revulsion towards perception, revulsion towards volitional formations, revulsion towards consciousness. Experiencing revulsion, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion his mind is liberated. When it is liberated there comes the knowledge: ‘It’s liberated.’ He understands: ‘Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ในที่นั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาตรัสว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ จะพึงเบื่อหน่ายได้บ้าง คลายกำหนัดได้บ้าง หลุดพ้นได้บ้างในร่างกายอันเป็นที่ประชุมแห่งมหาภูตทั้ง ๔ นี้ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะว่า ความเจริญก็ดี ความเสื่อมไปก็ดี การยึดถือก็ดี การทอดทิ้งก็ดี ของร่างกายอันเป็นที่ประชุมแห่งมหาภูตทั้ง ๔ นี้ ย่อมปรากฏ ดังนั้น ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ จึงเบื่อหน่ายได้บ้าง คลายกำหนัดได้บ้าง หลุดพ้นได้บ้าง ในร่างกายนั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนที่เรียกกันว่า จิตบ้าง มโนบ้าง วิญญาณบ้าง ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ ไม่อาจจะเบื่อหน่าย ไม่อาจจะคลายกำหนัด ไม่อาจจะหลุดพ้นจากสิ่งเหล่านั้นได้เลย ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะว่าสิ่งเหล่านั้น อันปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ รวบไว้ ถือไว้ ยึดไว้ (ด้วยตัณหาและทิฏฐิ) มาตลอดกาลยาวนานว่า นั่นของเรา นั่นเป็นเรา นั่นเป็นอัตตาของเรา ดังนี้ ดังนั้น ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ จึงไม่อาจจะเบื่อหน่าย ไม่อาจจะคลายกำหนัด ไม่อาจจะหลุดพ้นจากสิ่งเหล่านั้นได้เลย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้สดับ จะพึงเข้าไปยึดถือเอาร่างกายอันเป็นที่ประชุมแห่งมหาภูตทั้ง ๔ นี้ โดยความเป็นอัตตายังดีกว่า แต่จะเข้าไปยึดถือเอาจิตโดยความเป็นอัตตาไม่ดีเลย ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะว่าร่างกายอันเป็นที่ประชุมแห่งมหาภูตทั้ง ๔ นี้ ย่อมปรากฏว่าดำรงอยู่ได้ ๑ ปีบ้าง ๒ ปีบ้าง ๓ ปีบ้าง ๔ ปีบ้าง ๕ ปีบ้าง ๑๐ ปีบ้าง ๒๐ ปีบ้าง ๓๐ ปีบ้าง ๔๐ ปีบ้าง ๕๐ ปีบ้าง ๑๐๐ ปีบ้าง หรือเกินกว่า ๑๐๐ ปีบ้าง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนสิ่งที่เรียกกันว่า จิตบ้าง มโนบ้าง วิญญาณบ้างนั้น อันหนึ่งเกิดขึ้น อันหนึ่งดับไป ตลอดคืน ตลอดวัน.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในเรื่องนั้น อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับ ย่อมกระทำไว้ในใจเป็นอย่างดีซึ่งปฏิจจสมุปบาทนั่นเทียว ดังนี้ว่า เมื่อสิ่งนี้มี สิ่งนี้ย่อมมี เพราะความเกิดขึ้นแห่งสิ่งนี้ สิ่งนี้จึงเกิดขึ้น เมื่อสิ่งนี้ไม่มี สิ่งนี้ย่อมไม่มี เพราะความดับไปแห่งสิ่งนี้ สิ่งนี้จึงดับไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนา สุขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ สุขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนา สุขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ ทุกขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนาทุกขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนา อทุกขมสุขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ อทุกขมสุขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนา อทุกขมสุขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนไม้ ๒ อันเสียดสีกัน เพราะการเสียดสีกันจึงเกิดความร้อน จึงเกิดไฟ เมื่อแยกไม้ ๒ อันนั้นแหละออกจากกัน ความร้อนที่เกิดเพราะการเสียดสีนั้น จึงดับจึงสงบไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนา สุขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ สุขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งสุขเวทนา สุขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ ทุกขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งทุกขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนา อทุกขมสุขเวทนาย่อมขึ้น เพราะความดับแห่งผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนานั้นนั่นแหละ อทุกขมสุขเวทนาใดที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยผัสสะอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งอทุกขมสุขเวทนา อทุกขมสุขเวทนานั้น ย่อมดับ ย่อมสงบไป.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับ เมื่อเห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในผัสสะ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในเวทนา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสัญญา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสังขารทั้งหลาย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในวิญญาณ เมื่อเบื่อหน่าย ย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัด ย่อมหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่าหลุดพ้นแล้ว และย่อมรู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำ ได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่จะต้องทำเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้ไม่ได้มีอีก ดังนี้.
