The five faculties that refer to feelings. (3)

“Mendicants, there are these five faculties. What five? The faculties of pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, and equanimity.
And what is the faculty of pleasure? Physical enjoyment, physical pleasure, the enjoyable, pleasant feeling that’s born from physical contact. This is called the faculty of pleasure.
And what is the faculty of pain? Physical pain, physical unpleasantness, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from physical contact. This is called the faculty of pain.
And what is the faculty of happiness? Mental enjoyment, mental pleasure, the enjoyable, pleasant feeling that’s born from mind contact. This is called the faculty of happiness.
And what is the faculty of sadness? Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from mind contact. This is called the faculty of sadness.
And what is the faculty of equanimity? Neither pleasant nor unpleasant feeling, whether physical or mental. This is the faculty of equanimity.
In this context, the faculties of pleasure and happiness should be seen as pleasant feeling. The faculties of pain and sadness should be seen as painful feeling. The faculty of equanimity should be seen as neutral feeling.
That’s how these five faculties, depending on how they’re explained, having been five become three, and having been three become five.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ สุขินทรีย์ (อินทรีย์ คือ สุข) ทุกขินทรีย์ (อินทรีย์ คือ ทุกข์) โสนัสสินทรีย์ (อินทรีย์ คือ โสมนัส) โทมนัสสินทรีย์ (อินทรีย์ คือ โทมนัส) และอุเปกขินทรีย์ (อินทรีย์ คือ อุเบกขา).
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สุขินทรีย์ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความสุขทางกาย ความสำราญทางกาย ความรู้สึกอันเป็นสุขสำราญ ที่เกิดจากกายสัมผัสอันใด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า สุขินทรีย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขินทรีย์ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความทุกข์ทางกาย ความไม่สำราญทางกาย ความรู้สึกอันเป็นทุกข์ไม่สำราญ ที่เกิดจากกายสัมผัสอันใด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขินทรีย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็โสมนัสสินทรีย์ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความสุขทางใจ ความสำราญทางใจ ความรู้สึกอันเป็นสุขสำราญ ที่เกิดจากมโนสัมผัส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า โสมนัสสินทรีย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็โทมนัสสินทรีย์ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความทุกข์ทางใจ ความไม่สำราญทางใจ ความรู้สึกอันเป็นทุกข์ไม่สำราญ ที่เกิดจากมโนสัมผัส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า โทมนัสสินทรีย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อุเปกขินทรีย์ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความรู้สึกทางกายหรือทางใจ ที่เป็นความสำราญก็ไม่ใช่ ที่เป็นความไม่สำราญก็ไม่ใช่อันใด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า อุเปกขินทรีย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในอินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านั้น สุขินทรีย์และโสมนัสสินทรีย์ พึงเห็นว่า เป็นสุขเวทนา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในอินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านั้น ทุกขินทรีย์และโทมนัสสินทรีย์ พึงเห็นว่า เป็นทุกขเวทนา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในอินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านั้น อุเปกขินทรีย์ พึงเห็นว่า เป็นอทุกขมสุขเวทนา.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เหล่านี้แล อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการ ด้วยปริยายอย่างนี้ เป็น ๕ แล้วย่อเข้าเป็น ๓ เป็น ๓ แล้ว ขยายออกเป็น ๕ ก็ได้.
