Ten perceptions. (Girimānanda Sutra)

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Now at that time Venerable Girimānanda was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“Sir, Venerable Girimānanda is sick, suffering, gravely ill. Sir, please go to Venerable Girimānanda out of compassion.”
“Ānanda, if you were to recite to the mendicant Girimānanda these ten perceptions, it’s possible that after hearing them his illness will die down on the spot.
What ten? The perceptions of impermanence, not-self, ugliness, drawbacks, giving up, fading away, cessation, dissatisfaction with the whole world, impermanence of all conditions, and mindfulness of breathing.
And what is the perception of impermanence? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, and reflects like this: ‘Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are impermanent.’ And so they meditate observing impermanence in the five grasping aggregates. This is called the perception of impermanence.
And what is the perception of not-self? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, and reflects like this: ‘The eye and sights, ear and sounds, nose and smells, tongue and tastes, body and touches, and mind and thoughts are not-self.’ And so they meditate observing not-self in the six interior and exterior sense fields. This is called the perception of not-self.
And what is the perception of ugliness? It’s when a mendicant examines their own body up from the soles of the feet and down from the tips of the hairs, wrapped in skin and full of many kinds of filth. ‘In this body there is head hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, undigested food, feces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, snot, synovial fluid, urine.’ And so they meditate observing ugliness in this body. This is called the perception of ugliness.
And what is the perception of drawbacks? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, and reflects like this: ‘This body has much suffering and many drawbacks. For this body is beset with many kinds of affliction, such as the following. Diseases of the eye, inner ear, nose, tongue, body, head, outer ear, mouth, teeth, and lips. Cough, asthma, catarrh, inflammation, fever, stomach ache, fainting, dysentery, gastric pain, cholera, leprosy, boils, eczema, tuberculosis, epilepsy, herpes, itch, scabs, smallpox, scabies, hemorrhage, diabetes, piles, pimples, and ulcers. Afflictions stemming from disorders of bile, phlegm, wind, or their conjunction. Afflictions caused by change in weather, by not taking care of yourself, by overexertion, or as the result of past deeds. Cold, heat, hunger, thirst, defecation, and urination.’ And so they meditate observing drawbacks in this body. This is called the perception of drawbacks.
And what is the perception of giving up? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t tolerate a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought that has arisen, and they don’t tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen, but give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them. This is called the perception of giving up.
And what is the perception of fading away? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, and reflects like this: ‘This is peaceful; this is sublime—that is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, extinguishment.’ This is called the perception of fading away.
And what is the perception of cessation? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, and reflects like this: ‘This is peaceful; this is sublime—that is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, cessation, extinguishment.’ This is called the perception of cessation.
And what is the perception of dissatisfaction with the whole world? It’s when a mendicant lives giving up and not grasping on to the attraction and grasping to the world, the mental fixation, insistence, and underlying tendencies. This is called the perception of dissatisfaction with the whole world.
And what is the perception of the impermanence of all conditions? It’s when a mendicant is horrified, repelled, and disgusted with all conditions. This is called the perception of the impermanence of all conditions.
And what is mindfulness of breathing? It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down cross-legged, with their body straight, and establishes mindfulness right there. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. When breathing in heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing in heavily.’ When breathing out heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing out heavily.’ When breathing in lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing in lightly.’ When breathing out lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing out lightly.’ They practice breathing in experiencing the whole body. They practice breathing out experiencing the whole body. They practice breathing in stilling the body’s motion. They practice breathing out stilling the body’s motion. They practice breathing in experiencing rapture. They practice breathing out experiencing rapture. They practice breathing in experiencing bliss. They practice breathing out experiencing bliss. They practice breathing in experiencing these emotions. They practice breathing out experiencing these emotions. They practice breathing in stilling these emotions. They practice breathing out stilling these emotions. They practice breathing in experiencing the mind. They practice breathing out experiencing the mind. They practice breathing in gladdening the mind. They practice breathing out gladdening the mind. They practice breathing in immersing the mind. They practice breathing out immersing the mind. They practice breathing in freeing the mind. They practice breathing out freeing the mind. They practice breathing in observing impermanence. They practice breathing out observing impermanence. They practice breathing in observing fading away. They practice breathing out observing fading away. They practice breathing in observing cessation. They practice breathing out observing cessation. They practice breathing in observing letting go. They practice breathing out observing letting go. This is called mindfulness of breathing.
If you were to recite to the mendicant Girimānanda these ten perceptions, it’s possible that after hearing them his illness will die down on the spot.”
Then Ānanda, having learned these ten perceptions from the Buddha himself, went to Girimānanda and recited them. Then after Girimānanda heard these ten perceptions his illness died down on the spot. And that’s how he recovered from that illness.

On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Girimānanda was sick, afflicted, and gravely ill. Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“Bhante, the Venerable Girimānanda is sick, afflicted, and gravely ill. It would be good if the Blessed One would visit him out of compassion.”
“If, Ānanda, you visit the bhikkhu Girimānanda and speak to him about ten perceptions, it is possible that on hearing about them his affliction will immediately subside. What are the ten?
“(1) The perception of impermanence, (2) the perception of non-self, (3) the perception of unattractiveness, (4) the perception of danger, (5) the perception of abandoning, (6) the perception of dispassion, (7) the perception of cessation, (8) the perception of non-delight in the entire world, (9) the perception of impermanence in all conditioned phenomena, and (10) mindfulness of breathing.
(1) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of impermanence? Here, having gone to the forest, to the foot of a tree, or to an empty hut, a bhikkhu reflects thus: ‘Form is impermanent, feeling is impermanent, perception is impermanent, volitional activities are impermanent, consciousness is impermanent.’ Thus he dwells contemplating impermanence in these five aggregates subject to clinging. This is called the perception of impermanence.
(2) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of non-self? Here, having gone to the forest, to the foot of a tree, or to an empty hut, a bhikkhu reflects thus: ‘The eye is non-self, forms are non-self; the ear is non-self, sounds are non-self; the nose is non-self, odors are non-self; the tongue is non-self, tastes are non-self; the body is non-self, tactile objects are non-self; the mind is non-self, mental phenomena are non-self.’ Thus he dwells contemplating non-self in these six internal and external sense bases. This is called the perception of non-self.
(3) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of unattractiveness? Here, a bhikkhu reviews this very body upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the tips of the hairs, enclosed in skin, as full of many kinds of impurities: ‘There are in this body hair of the head, hair of the body, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, stomach, excrement, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, snot, fluid of the joints, urine.’ Thus he dwells contemplating unattractiveness in this body. This is called the perception of unattractiveness.
(4) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of danger? Here, having gone to the forest, to the foot of a tree, or to an empty hut, a bhikkhu reflects thus: ‘This body is the source of much pain and danger; for all sorts of afflictions arise in this body, that is, eye-disease, disease of the inner ear, nose-disease, tongue-disease, body-disease, head-disease, disease of the external ear, mouth-disease, tooth-disease, cough, asthma, catarrh, pyrexia, fever, stomach ache, fainting, dysentery, gripes, cholera, leprosy, boils, eczema, tuberculosis, epilepsy, ringworm, itch, scab, chickenpox, scabies, hemorrhage, diabetes, hemorrhoids, cancer, fistula; illnesses originating from bile, phlegm, wind, or their combination; illnesses produced by change of climate; illnesses produced by careless behavior; illnesses produced by assault; or illnesses produced as the result of kamma; and cold, heat, hunger, thirst, defecation, and urination.’ Thus he dwells contemplating danger in this body. This is called the perception of danger.
(5) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of abandoning? Here, a bhikkhu does not tolerate an arisen sensual thought; he abandons it, dispels it, terminates it, and obliterates it. He does not tolerate an arisen thought of ill will … an arisen thought of harming … bad unwholesome states whenever they arise; he abandons them, dispels them, terminates them, and obliterates them. This is called the perception of abandoning.
(6) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of dispassion? Here, having gone to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, a bhikkhu reflects thus: ‘This is peaceful, this is sublime, that is, the stilling of all activities, the relinquishment of all acquisitions, the destruction of craving, dispassion, nibbāna.’ This is called the perception of dispassion.
(7) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of cessation? Here, having gone to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, a bhikkhu reflects thus: ‘This is peaceful, this is sublime, that is, the stilling of all activities, the relinquishment of all acquisitions, the destruction of craving, cessation, nibbāna.’ This is called the perception of cessation.
(8) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of non-delight in the entire world? Here, a bhikkhu refrains from any engagement and clinging, mental standpoints, adherences, and underlying tendencies in regard to the world, abandoning them without clinging to them. This is called the perception of non-delight in the entire world.
(9) “And what, Ānanda, is the perception of impermanence in all conditioned phenomena? Here, a bhikkhu is repelled, humiliated, and disgusted by all conditioned phenomena. This is called the perception of impermanence in all conditioned phenomena.
(10) “And what, Ānanda, is mindfulness of breathing? Here, a bhikkhu, having gone to the forest, to the foot of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down. Having folded his legs crosswise, straightened his body, and established mindfulness in front of him, just mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out.
“Breathing in long, he knows: ‘I breathe in long’; or breathing out long, he knows: ‘I breathe out long.’ Breathing in short, he knows: ‘I breathe in short’; or breathing out short, he knows: ‘I breathe out short.’ He trains thus: ‘Experiencing the whole body, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Experiencing the whole body, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Tranquilizing the bodily activity, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Tranquilizing the bodily activity, I will breathe out.’
“He trains thus: ‘Experiencing rapture, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Experiencing rapture, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Experiencing happiness, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Experiencing happiness, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Experiencing the mental activity, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Experiencing the mental activity, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Tranquilizing the mental activity, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Tranquilizing the mental activity, I will breathe out.’
“He trains thus: ‘Experiencing the mind, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Experiencing the mind, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Gladdening the mind, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Gladdening the mind, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Concentrating the mind, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Concentrating the mind, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Liberating the mind, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Liberating the mind, I will breathe out.’
“He trains thus: ‘Contemplating impermanence, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Contemplating impermanence, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Contemplating fading away, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Contemplating fading away, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Contemplating cessation, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Contemplating cessation, I will breathe out.’ He trains thus: ‘Contemplating relinquishment, I will breathe in’; he trains thus: ‘Contemplating relinquishment, I will breathe out.’
“This is called mindfulness of breathing.
“If, Ānanda, you visit the bhikkhu Girimānanda and speak to him about these ten perceptions, it is possible that on hearing about them he will immediately recover from his affliction.”
Then, when the Venerable Ānanda had learned these ten perceptions from the Blessed One, he went to the Venerable Girimānanda and spoke to him about them. When the Venerable Girimānanda heard about these ten perceptions, his affliction immediately subsided. The Venerable Girimānanda recovered from that affliction, and that is how he was cured of his affliction.
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ก็สมัยนั้น ท่านพระคิริมานนท์อาพาธ ได้รับทุกข์ เป็นไข้หนัก ครั้งนั้นท่านพระอานนท์เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว นั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต ท่านพระคิริมานนท์อาพาธ ได้รับทุกข์ เป็นไข้หนัก สาธุ ภันเต ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคได้โปรดอาศัยความอนุเคราะห์ เสด็จไปเยี่ยมท่านพระคิริมานนท์ยังที่อยู่เถิด.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า อานนท์ ถ้าเธอพึงเข้าไปหาภิกษุคิริมานนท์แล้ว กล่าวสัญญา ๑๐ ประการแก่เธอ ข้อที่อาพาธของภิกษุคิริมานนท์ จะพึงสงบระงับไปโดยพลัน เพราะได้ฟังสัญญา ๑๐ ประการนั้น นั่นเป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้ สัญญา ๑๐ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) อนิจจสัญญา
๒) อนัตตสัญญา
๓) อสุภสัญญา
๔) อาทีนวสัญญา
๕) ปหานสัญญา
๖) วิราคสัญญา
๗) นิโรธสัญญา
๘) สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญา
๙) สัพพสังขาเรสุอนิจจสัญญา
๑๐) อานาปานสติ
อานนท์ ก็อนิจจสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า รูปไม่เที่ยง เวทนาไม่เที่ยง สัญญาไม่เที่ยง สังขารทั้งหลายไม่เที่ยง วิญญาณไม่เที่ยง ย่อมเป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นโดยความเป็นของไม่เที่ยงในอุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ เหล่านี้ ด้วยประการอย่างนี้ อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า อนิจจสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็อนัตตสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า ตาเป็นอนัตตา รูปเป็นอนัตตา หูเป็นอนัตตา เสียงเป็นอนัตตา จมูกเป็นอนัตตา กลิ่นเป็นอนัตตา ลิ้นเป็นอนัตตา รสเป็นอนัตตา กายเป็นอนัตตา โผฏฐัพพะเป็นอนัตตา ใจเป็นอนัตตา ธรรมเป็นอนัตตา ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นโดยความเป็นอนัตตาในอายตนะทั้งหลาย ทั้งภายในและภายนอก ๖ ประการเหล่านี้ ด้วยประการอย่างนี้ อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า อนัตตสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็อสุภสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นกายนี้นั่นแหละ ตั้งแต่พื้นเท้าขึ้นไปสู่เบื้องบน ตั้งแต่ปลายผมลงมาเบื้องล่าง มีหนังหุ้มอยู่โดยรอบ เต็มไปด้วยของไม่สะอาด มีประการต่างๆ ว่า ในกายนี้มีผม ขน เล็บ ฟัน หนัง เนื้อ เอ็น กระดูก เยื่อในกระดูก ม้าม หัวใจ ตับ พังผืด ไต ปอด ไส้ใหญ่ ไส้น้อย อาหารใหม่ อาหารเก่า น้ำดี เสลด หนอง เลือด เหงื่อ มันข้น น้ำตา มันเหลว น้ำลาย น้ำมูก ไขข้อ มูตร ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นโดยความเป็นของไม่งามในกายนี้ ด้วยประการอย่างนี้ อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า อสุภสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็อาทีนวสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า กายนี้มีทุกข์มาก มีโทษมาก เพราะฉะนั้น อาพาธต่างๆ จึงเกิดขึ้นในกายนี้ คือ โรคตา โรคหู โรคจมูก โรคลิ้น โรคกาย โรคศีรษะ โรคที่ใบหู โรคปาก โรคฟัน โรคไอ โรคหืด โรคไข้หวัด โรคไข้พิษ โรคไข้เซื่องซึม โรคในท้อง โรคลมสลบ โรคบิด โรคจุกเสียด โรคลงราก โรคเรื้อน โรคฝี โรคกลาก โรคมองคร่อ โรคลมบ้าหมู โรคหิดเปื่อย โรคหิดด้าน โรคคุดทะราด โรคหูด โรคละอองบวม โรคอาเจียนโลหิต โรคดีเดือด โรคเบาหวาน โรคเริม โรคพุพอง โรคริดสีดวง อาพาธมีน้ำดีเป็นเหตุ อาพาธมีเสมหะเป็นเหตุ อาพาธมีลมเป็นเหตุ อาพาธมีไข้สันนิบาต อาพาธอันเกิดจากฤดูแปรปรวน อาพาธอันเกิดจากการบริหารกายไม่สม่ำเสมอ อาพาธอันเกิดจากทำความเพียรเกินกำลัง อาพาธอันเกิดจากวิบากของกรรม ความหนาว ความร้อน ความหิว ความกระหาย ปวดอุจจาระ ปวดปัสสาวะ ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นโดยความเป็นโทษในกายนี้ ด้วยประการอย่างนี้ อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า อาทีนวสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็ปหานสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมไม่ยินดี ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา ย่อมทำให้หมดสิ้นไป ย่อมทำให้ไม่มีเหลือซึ่งกามวิตกที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ย่อมไม่ยินดี ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา ย่อมทำให้หมดสิ้นไป ย่อมทำให้ไม่มีเหลือซึ่งพยาบาทวิตกที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ย่อมไม่ยินดี ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา ย่อมทำให้หมดสิ้นไป ย่อมให้ไม่มีเหลือซึ่งวิหิงสาวิตกที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ย่อมไม่ยินดี ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา ย่อมทำให้หมดสิ้นไป ย่อมให้ไม่มีเหลือซึ่งอกุศลธรรมอันเป็นบาปทั้งหลายที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว และเกิดขึ้นแล้ว อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า ปหานสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็วิราคสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า นั่นสงบ นั่นประณีต นั่นคือ ธรรมเป็นที่สงบระงับแห่งสังขารทั้งปวง เป็นที่สละคืนซึ่งอุปธิทั้งปวง เป็นที่สิ้นไปแห่งตัณหา เป็นความคลายกำหนัด เป็นนิพพาน อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า วิราคสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็นิโรธสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง ย่อมพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า นั่นสงบ นั่นประณีต นั่นคือ ธรรมเป็นที่สงบระงับแห่งสังขารทั้งปวง เป็นที่สละคืนซึ่งอุปธิทั้งปวง เป็นที่สิ้นไปแห่งตัณหา เป็นความดับ เป็นนิพพาน อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า นิโรธสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ละอุปายะ (เหตุที่นำไปสู่ภพ) และอุปาทาน (ความยึดมั่น) อันเป็นที่ตั้ง เป็นที่ยึดมั่น และเป็นอนุสัยแห่งจิต เธอย่อมงดเว้น ไม่ถือมั่นอยู่ อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็สัพพสังขาเรสุอนิจจสัญญาเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมอึดอัด ย่อมระอา ย่อมเกลียดชังต่อสังขารทั้งปวง อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า สัพพสังขาเรสุอนิจจสัญญา.
อานนท์ ก็อานาปานสติเป็นอย่างไร คือ อานนท์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไปสู่ป่า สู่โคนไม้ หรือสู่เรือนว่าง นั่งคู้ขาเข้ามาโดยรอบ ตั้งกายตรง ดำรงสติเฉพาะหน้า เธอนั้น มีสติหายใจเข้า มีสติหายใจออก เมื่อหายใจเข้ายาวก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจเข้ายาว เมื่อหายใจออกยาวก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจออกยาว เมื่อหายใจเข้าสั้นก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจเข้าสั้น เมื่อหายใจออกสั้นก็รู้ชัดว่าเราหายใจออกสั้น ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งกายทั้งปวงหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งกายทั้งปวงหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำกายสังขารให้ระงับหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำกายสังขารให้ระงับหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งปีติหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งปีติหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งสุขหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งสุขหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งจิตตสังขารหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งจิตตสังขารหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตตสังขารให้ระงับหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตตสังขารให้ระงับหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งจิตหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักรู้พร้อมซึ่งจิตหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตให้ปราโมทย์ยิ่งหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตให้ปราโมทย์ยิ่งหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตให้ตั้งมั่นหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักทำจิตให้ตั้งมั่นหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักปล่อยจิตหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักปล่อยจิตหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความไม่เที่ยงหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความไม่เที่ยงหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความจางคลายหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความจางคลายหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความดับไม่เหลือหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความดับไม่เหลือหายใจออก ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความสลัดคืนหายใจเข้า ย่อมทำการศึกษาว่าเราจักพิจารณาเห็นความสลัดคืนหายใจออก อานนท์ นี้เรียกว่า อานาปานสติ.
อานนท์ ถ้าเธอพึงเข้าไปหาภิกษุคิริมานนท์แล้วกล่าวสัญญา ๑๐ ประการเหล่านี้แก่เธอ ข้อที่อาพาธของภิกษุคิริมานนท์จะพึงสงบระงับไปโดยพลัน เพราะได้ฟังสัญญา ๑๐ ประการนี้ นั่นเป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้.
ลำดับนั้น ท่านพระอานนท์ได้เรียนสัญญา ๑๐ ประการนี้ ในสำนักของพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว ได้เข้าไปหาท่านพระคิริมานนท์ยังที่อยู่ ครั้นแล้วได้กล่าวสัญญา ๑๐ ประการแก่ท่านพระคิริมานนท์ ครั้งนั้น อาพาธนั้นของท่านพระคิริมานนท์ก็สงบระงับโดยพลัน เพราะได้ฟังสัญญา ๑๐ ประการนี้ ท่านพระคิริมานนท์หายจากอาพาธนั้น ก็แล อาพาธนั้นเป็นโรคอันท่านพระคิริมานนท์ละได้แล้ว ด้วยประการดังนี้แล.
