Seven perceptions

“Mendicants, these seven perceptions, when developed and cultivated, are very fruitful and beneficial. They culminate in the deathless and end with the deathless. What seven? The perceptions of ugliness, death, repulsiveness of food, dissatisfaction with the whole world, impermanence, suffering in impermanence, and not-self in suffering. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. It’s like a chicken’s feather or a strip of sinew thrown in a fire. It shrivels up, shrinks, rolls up, and doesn’t stretch out. In the same way, when a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of ugliness, their mind draws back from sexual intercourse. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized.
If a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of ugliness, but their mind is drawn to desire to sexual intercourse, and not repulsed, they should know: ‘My perception of ugliness is undeveloped. I don’t have any distinction higher than before. I haven’t attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation.
But if a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of ugliness, their mind draws back from sexual intercourse. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. they should know: ‘My perception of ugliness is well developed. I have realized a distinction higher than before. I have attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation. ‘When the perception of ugliness is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘When the perception of death is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of death, their mind draws back from desire to be reborn. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. It’s like a chicken’s feather or a strip of sinew thrown in a fire. It shrivels up, shrinks, rolls up, and doesn’t stretch out. ‘When the perception of the repulsiveness of food is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of the repulsiveness of food, their mind draws back from craving for tastes. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. It’s like a chicken’s feather or a strip of sinew thrown in a fire. It shrivels up, shrinks, rolls up, and doesn’t stretch out. In the same way, when a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of the repulsiveness of food, their mind draws back from craving for tastes. But if a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of the repulsiveness of food, their mind draws back from craving for tastes. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. they should know: ‘My perception of the repulsiveness of food is well developed. I have realized a distinction higher than before. I have attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation. ‘When the perception of the repulsiveness of food is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘When the perception of dissatisfaction with the whole world is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of dissatisfaction with the whole world, their mind draws back from the world’s shiny things. … That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘When the perception of impermanence is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of impermanence, their mind draws back from material possessions, honors, and fame. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. It’s like a chicken’s feather or a strip of sinew thrown in a fire. It shrivels up, shrinks, rolls up, and doesn’t stretch out. In the same way, when a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of impermanence, their mind draws back from material possessions, honors, and fame. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized.
If a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of impermanence, but their mind is drawn to desire to material possessions, honors, and fame, and not repulsed, they should know: ‘My perception of impermanence is undeveloped. I don’t have any distinction higher than before. I haven’t attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation.
But if a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with impermanence, their mind draws back from material possessions, honors, and fame. They shrink away, turn aside, and don’t get drawn into it. And either equanimity or revulsion become stabilized. they should know: ‘My perception of impermanence is well developed. I have realized a distinction higher than before. I have attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation. ‘When the perception of impermanence is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘When the perception of suffering in impermanence is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of suffering in impermanence, they establish a keen perception of the danger of sloth, laziness, slackness, negligence, lack of commitment, and failure to review, like a killer with a drawn sword, when a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of suffering in impermanence, they establish a keen perception of the danger of sloth, laziness, slackness, negligence, lack of commitment, and failure to review, like a killer with a drawn sword.

But if a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with suffering in impermanence, they establish a keen perception of the danger of sloth, laziness, slackness, negligence, lack of commitment, and failure to review, like a killer with a drawn sword. they should know: ‘My perception of suffering in impermanence is well developed. I have realized a distinction higher than before. I have attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation. ‘When the perception of suffering in impermanence is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
‘When the perception of not-self in suffering is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, but why did I say it? When a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of not-self in suffering, their mind is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and all external stimuli. It has gone beyond discrimination, and is peaceful and well freed.
If a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of not-self in suffering, but their mind is not rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and all external stimuli; nor has it gone beyond discrimination, and is not peaceful or well freed, they should know: ‘My perception of not-self in suffering is undeveloped. I don’t have any distinction higher than before. I haven’t attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation.
But if a mendicant often meditates with a mind reinforced with the perception of not-self in suffering, and their mind is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and all external stimuli; and it has gone beyond discrimination, and is peaceful and well freed, they should know: ‘My perception of not-self in suffering is well developed. I have realized a distinction higher than before. I have attained a fruit of development.’ In this way they are aware of the situation. ‘When the perception of not-self in suffering is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. It culminates in the deathless and ends with the deathless.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.
These seven perceptions, when developed and cultivated, are very fruitful and beneficial. They culminate in the deathless and end with the deathless.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัญญา ๗ ประการเหล่านี้ อันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด สัญญา ๗ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) อสุภสัญญา
๒) มรณสัญญา
๓) อาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญา
๔) สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญา
๕) อนิจจสัญญา
๖) อนิจเจทุกขสัญญา
๗) ทุกเขอนัตตสัญญา
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อสุภสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอสุภสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากเมถุนธรรม ไม่ยื่นไปรับในเมถุนธรรม อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนขนไก่หรือเส้นเอ็นที่เขาใส่ลงในไฟ ย่อมหดงอเข้าหากัน ไม่คลี่ออก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอสุภสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากเมถุนธรรม ไม่ยื่นไปรับในเมถุนธรรม อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอสุภสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมไหลไปในเมถุนธรรม หรือความเป็นของไม่ปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อสุภสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอสุภสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอสุภสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากเมถุนธรรม ไม่ยื่นไปรับในเมถุนธรรม อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูล ย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อสุภสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอสุภสัญญานั้น.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยมรณสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมไหลไปในความรักชีวิต หรือความเป็นของไม่ปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า มรณสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในมรณสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยมรณสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากการรักชีวิต ไม่ยื่นไปรับในความรักชีวิต อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูล ย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า มรณสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในมรณสัญญานั้น.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมไหลไปกับความติดใจในรส หรือความเป็นของไม่ปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากความติดใจในรส ไม่ยื่นไปรับความติดใจในรส อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูล ย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอาหาเรปฏิกูลสัญญานั้น.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยสัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมไหลไปกับความวิจิตรแห่งโลก หรือความเป็นของไม่ปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในสัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยสัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากความวิจิตรแห่งโลก ไม่ยื่นไปรับความวิจิตรแห่งโลก อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูล ย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า สัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในสัพพโลเกอนภิรตสัญญานั้น.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อนิจจสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจจสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ ไม่ยื่นไปรับลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนขนไก่หรือเส้นเอ็นที่เขาใส่ลงในไฟ ย่อมหดงอเข้าหากัน ไม่คลี่ออก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจจสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ ไม่ยื่นไปรับลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจจสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมไหลไปกับลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ หรือความเป็นของไม่ปฏิกูลย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อนิจจสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอนิจจสัญญานั้น
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจจสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก จิตย่อมหวนกลับ งอกลับ ถอยกลับจากลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ ไม่ยื่นไปรับลาภสักการะและเสียงสรรเสริญ อุเบกขาหรือความเป็นของปฏิกูล ย่อมตั้งอยู่ ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อนิจจสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอนิจจสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อนิจจสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยข้อนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ความสำคัญว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า ในความเฉื่อยชา ในความเกียจคร้าน ในความท้อถอย ในความประมาท ในการไม่ประกอบความเพียร ในการไม่พิจารณา ย่อมปรากฏว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า เปรียบเหมือนเพชฌฆาตเงื้อดาบขึ้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ความสำคัญว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า ในความเฉื่อยชา ในความเกียจคร้าน ในความท้อถอย ในความประมาท ในการไม่ประกอบความเพียร ในการไม่พิจารณา ย่อมปรากฏว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า เปรียบเหมือนเพชฌฆาตเงื้อดาบขึ้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ความสำคัญว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า ในความเฉื่อยชา ในความเกียจคร้าน ในความท้อถอย ในความประมาท ในการไม่ประกอบความเพียร ในการไม่พิจารณา ย่อมไม่ปรากฏว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า เปรียบเหมือนเพชฌฆาตเงื้อดาบขึ้น ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อนิจเจทุกขสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอนิจเจทุกขสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยอนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ความสำคัญว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า ในความเฉื่อยชา ในความเกียจคร้าน ในความท้อถอย ในความประมาท ในการไม่ประกอบความเพียร ในการไม่พิจารณา ย่อมปรากฏว่าเป็นภัยอย่างแรงกล้า เปรียบเหมือนเพชฌฆาตเงื้อดาบขึ้น ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อนิจเจทุกขสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้นภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในอนิจเจทุกขสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า อนิจเจทุกขสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยข้อนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า ทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ใจย่อมปราศจากมานะว่าเราว่าของเรา (อหงฺการมมงฺการมาน) ทั้งในกาย อันประกอบด้วยวิญญาณนี้และในนิมิตทั้งหลายในภายนอกด้วย เป็นใจที่ก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งวิธา (ความถือตัว) เป็นใจสงบระงับ พ้นวิเศษแล้วด้วยดี.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก แต่ใจยังไม่ปราศจากมานะว่าเราว่าของเรา ทั้งในกายอันประกอบด้วยวิญญาณนี้และในนิมิตทั้งหลายในภายนอก ไม่เป็นใจก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งวิธา ไม่สงบระงับพ้นวิเศษแล้วด้วยดี ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า ทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาเราไม่ได้เจริญแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเราก็ไม่มี ผลแห่งภาวนาของเรายังไม่ถึงที่ เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงต้องเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในทุกเขอนัตตสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุมีใจที่อบรมแล้วด้วยทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาอยู่โดยมาก ใจย่อมปราศจากมานะว่าเราว่าของเรา ทั้งในกายอันประกอบด้วยวิญญาณนี้และในนิมิตทั้งหลายในภายนอกด้วย เป็นใจที่ก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งวิธา เป็นใจสงบระงับ พ้นวิเศษแล้วด้วยดี ดังนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงทราบข้อนั้นอย่างนี้ว่า ทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาเราได้เจริญดีแล้ว คุณวิเศษทั้งเบื้องต้นและเบื้องปลายของเรามีอยู่ ผลแห่งภาวนาของเราถึงที่แล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น ภิกษุนั้นจึงเป็นผู้รู้ทั่วถึงในทุกเขอนัตตสัญญานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่กล่าวดังนี้ว่า ทุกเขอนัตตสัญญาอันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด เรากล่าวแล้วเพราะอาศัยข้อนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สัญญา ๗ ประการเหล่านี้แล อันภิกษุเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก หยั่งลงสู่อมตะ มีอมตะเป็นที่สุด.
