Extinguishment is visible in this very life. (1)

Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
“Master Gotama, they say that ‘extinguishment is visible in this very life’. In what way is extinguishment visible in this very life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?”
“A greedy person, overcome by greed, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness. When greed has been given up, they don’t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They don’t experience mental pain and sadness. This is how extinguishment is visible in this very life.
A hateful person …
A deluded person, overcome by delusion, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness. When delusion has been given up, they don’t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They don’t experience mental pain and sadness. This, too, is how extinguishment is visible in this very life.
When you experience the ending of greed, hate, and delusion without anything left over, that’s how extinguishment is visible in this very life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.”
“Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇī approached the Blessed One … and said to him:
“Master Gotama, it is said: ‘Directly visible nibbāna, directly visible nibbāna.’ In what way is nibbāna directly visible, immediate, inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise?”
(1) “Brahmin, one excited by lust, overcome by lust, with mind obsessed by it, intends for his own affliction, for the affliction of others, or for the affliction of both, and he experiences mental suffering and dejection. But when lust is abandoned, he does not intend for his own affliction, for the affliction of others, or for the affliction of both, and he does not experience mental suffering and dejection. It is in this way that nibbāna is directly visible.
(2) “One full of hate, overcome by hatred …
(3) “One who is deluded, overcome by delusion, with mind obsessed by it, intends for his own affliction, for the affliction of others, or for the affliction of both, and he experiences mental suffering and dejection. But when delusion is abandoned, he does not intend for his own affliction, for the affliction of others, or for the affliction of both, and he does not experience mental suffering and dejection. It is in this way, too, that nibbāna is directly visible.
“When, brahmin, one experiences the remainderless destruction of lust, the remainderless destruction of hatred, and the remainderless destruction of delusion, it is in this way, too, that nibbāna is directly visible, immediate, inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise.”
“Excellent, Master Gotama! … Let Master Gotama consider me a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.”
ครั้งนั้นแล ชานุสโสณีพราหมณ์ได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ได้ปราศรัยกับพระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้วจึงนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามว่า
พระโคดมผู้เจริญ พระองค์ตรัสว่า นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง ดังนี้ พระโคดมผู้เจริญ นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง (ซึ่ง) ไม่ประกอบด้วยกาล ควรเรียกกันมาดู ควรน้อมเข้ามาใส่ตน อันผู้รู้ก็รู้ได้เฉพาะตน ย่อมมีได้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลผู้มีราคะแล้ว ถูกราคะครอบงำแล้ว มีจิตถูกราคะกลุ้มรุมแล้ว ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนตนเองบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนผู้อื่นบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่ายบ้าง และย่อมได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตบ้าง เมื่อละราคะได้แล้ว เขาย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนตนเอง ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนผู้อื่น ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่าย และย่อมไม่ได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตด้วย พราหมณ์ นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง (ซึ่ง) ไม่ประกอบด้วยกาล ควรเรียกกันมาดู ควรน้อมเข้ามาใส่ตน อันผู้รู้ก็รู้ได้เฉพาะตน ย่อมมีได้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลผู้มีโทสะแล้ว ถูกโทสะครอบงำแล้ว มีจิตถูกโทสะกลุ้มรุมแล้ว ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนตนเองบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนผู้อื่นบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่ายบ้าง และย่อมได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตบ้าง เมื่อละโทสะได้แล้ว เขาย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนตนเอง ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนผู้อื่น ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่าย และย่อมไม่ได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตด้วย พราหมณ์ นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง (ซึ่ง) ไม่ประกอบด้วยกาล ควรเรียกกันมาดู ควรน้อมเข้ามาใส่ตน อันผู้รู้ก็รู้ได้เฉพาะตน ย่อมมีได้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลผู้มีโมหะแล้ว ถูกโมหะครอบงำแล้ว มีจิตถูกโมหะกลุ้มรุมแล้ว ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนตนเองบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนผู้อื่นบ้าง ย่อมคิดเพื่อเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่ายบ้าง และย่อมได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตบ้าง เมื่อละโมหะได้แล้ว เขาย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนตนเอง ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนผู้อื่น ย่อมไม่คิดเพื่อจะเบียดเบียนทั้งสองฝ่าย และย่อมไม่ได้รับทุกข์และโทมนัสที่เป็นไปทางจิตด้วย พราหมณ์ นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง (ซึ่ง) ไม่ประกอบด้วยกาล ควรเรียกกันมาดู ควรน้อมเข้ามาใส่ตน อันผู้รู้ก็รู้ได้เฉพาะตน ย่อมมีได้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
พราหมณ์ ในกาลใด บุคคลนี้ย่อมรู้ชัดซึ่งความสิ้นไปแห่งราคะอันไม่มีส่วนเหลือ ย่อมรู้ชัดซึ่งความสิ้นไปแห่งโทสะอันไม่มีส่วนเหลือ ย่อมรู้ชัดซึ่งความสิ้นไปแห่งโมหะอันไม่มีส่วนเหลือ พราหมณ์ ในกาลนั้น นิพพานอันผู้ได้บรรลุจะพึงเห็นเอง (ซึ่ง) ไม่ประกอบด้วยกาล ควรเรียกกันมาดู ควรน้อมเข้ามาใส่ตน อันผู้รู้ก็รู้ได้เฉพาะตน ย่อมมีได้ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
ชานุสโสณีพราหมณ์นั้นกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ข้าแต่พระโคดผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก เปรียบเหมือนบุคคลหงายของที่คว่ำ เปิดของที่ปิด บอกทางแก่คนผู้หลงทาง หรือส่องประทีปในที่มืดด้วยหวังว่า คนมีตาดีจะได้มองเห็นรูป ดังนี้ ท่านพระโคดมทรงประกาศธรรมโดยอเนกปริยายอย่างนี้ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ขอถึงท่านพระโคดม กับทั้งพระธรรม และทั้งพระภิกษุสงฆ์ว่าเป็นสรณะ ขอท่านพระโคดมโปรดทรงจำข้าพระองค์ว่า เป็นอุบาสกผู้ถึงสรณะตลอดชีวิตตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป.
