Keen and prudent can be cultivated in all aspects of life. (1)

“Mendicants, live by the ethical precepts and the monastic code. Live restrained in the code of conduct, conducting yourselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, keep the rules you’ve undertaken. When you’ve done this, what more is there to do?
Suppose a mendicant has got rid of desire and ill will while walking, and has given up dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Their energy is roused up and unflagging, their mindfulness is established and lucid, their body is tranquil and undisturbed, and their mind is immersed in samādhi. Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and determined’ when walking.
Suppose a mendicant has got rid of desire and ill will while standing … sitting … and when lying down while awake, and has given up dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Their energy is roused up and unflagging, their mindfulness is established and lucid, their body is tranquil and undisturbed, and their mind is immersed in samādhi. Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and determined’ when lying down while awake.
Carefully walking, carefully standing,
carefully sitting, carefully lying;
a mendicant carefully bends their limbs,
and carefully extends them.Above, below, all round,
as far as the earth extends;
they scrutinize the rise and fall
of phenomena such as the aggregates.Training in what leads to serenity of heart,
always staying mindful;
they call such a mendicant
‘always determined’.”

“Bhikkhus, dwell observant of virtuous behavior, observant of the Pātimokkha. Dwell restrained by the Pātimokkha, possessed of good conduct and resort, seeing danger in minute faults. Having undertaken them, train in the training rules. When you have done so, what further should be done?
(1) “Bhikkhus, if a bhikkhu has gotten rid of longing and ill will while walking; if he has abandoned dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt; if his energy is aroused without slackening; if his mindfulness is established and unmuddled; if his body is tranquil and undisturbed; if his mind is concentrated and one-pointed, then that bhikkhu is said to be ardent and to dread wrongdoing; he is constantly and continuously energetic and resolute while walking.
(2) “If a bhikkhu has gotten rid of longing and ill will while standing … (3) If a bhikkhu has gotten rid of longing and ill will while sitting … … (4) If a bhikkhu has gotten rid of longing and ill will while wakefully lying down; if he has abandoned dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt; if his energy is aroused without slackening; if his mindfulness is established and unmuddled; if his body is tranquil and undisturbed; if his mind is concentrated and one-pointed, then that bhikkhu is said to be ardent and to dread wrongdoing; he is constantly and continuously energetic and resolute while wakefully lying down.”
Controlled in walking, controlled in standing,
controlled in sitting and in lying down;
controlled, a bhikkhu draws in the limbs,
and controlled, he stretches them out.Above, across, and below,
as far as the world extends,
he is one who scrutinizes the arising and vanishing
of such phenomena as the aggregates.Training in what is conducive
to serenity of mind, always mindful,
they call such a bhikkhu
one constantly resolute.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงเป็นผู้มีศีลสมบูรณ์ มีปาติโมกข์สมบูรณ์อยู่เถิด จงเป็นผู้สำรวมในปาติโมกขสังวร สมบูรณ์ด้วยมารยาทและโคจรอยู่เถิด มีปกติเห็นภัยในโทษทั้งหลายแม้มีประมาณเล็กน้อย สมาทานศึกษาในสิกขาบททั้งหลายเถิด.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเธอทั้งหลายมีศีลสมบูรณ์ มีปาติโมกข์สมบูรณ์อยู่ เป็นผู้สำรวมในปาติโมกขสังวร สมบูรณ์ด้วยมารยาทและโคจรอยู่ มีปกติเห็นภัยในโทษทั้งหลายแม้มีประมาณเล็กน้อย สมาทานศึกษาในสิกขาบททั้งหลายแล้ว จะมีอะไรเป็นกิจที่ควรทำให้ยิ่งขึ้นไปกว่านี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุกำลังเดินอยู่ (เป็นผู้) ปราศจากอภิชฌาแล้ว ปราศจากพยาบาทแล้ว ละถีนมิทธะได้แล้ว ละอุทธัจจกุกกุจจะได้แล้ว ละวิจิกิจฉาได้แล้ว ความเพียรก็ปรารภแล้วไม่ย่อหย่อน มีสติตั้งมั่นไม่หลงลืม มีกายสงบระงับไม่กระสับกระส่าย มีจิตตั้งมั่น มีอารมณ์อันเดียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุที่เป็นเช่นนี้ แม้จะเดินอยู่ เราก็เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีโอตตัปปะ มีความเพียรอันปรารภแล้ว มีตนส่งไปแล้วในการทำเช่นนั้นอยู่เนืองนิตย์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุกำลังยืนอยู่ (เป็นผู้) ปราศจากอภิชฌาแล้ว ปราศจากพยาบาทแล้ว ละถีนมิทธะได้แล้ว ละอุทธัจจกุกกุจจะได้แล้ว ละวิจิกิจฉาได้แล้ว ความเพียรก็ปรารภแล้วไม่ย่อหย่อน มีสติตั้งมั่นไม่หลงลืม มีกายสงบระงับไม่กระสับกระส่าย มีจิตตั้งมั่น มีอารมณ์อันเดียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุที่เป็นเช่นนี้ แม้จะยืนอยู่ เราก็เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีโอตตัปปะ มีความเพียรอันปรารภแล้ว มีตนส่งไปแล้วในการทำเช่นนั้นอยู่เนืองนิตย์.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุกำลังนอนตื่นอยู่ (เป็นผู้) ปราศจากอภิชฌาแล้ว ปราศจากพยาบาทแล้ว ละถีนมิทธะได้แล้ว ละอุทธัจจกุกกุจจะได้แล้ว ละวิจิกิจฉาได้แล้ว ความเพียรก็ปรารภแล้วไม่ย่อหย่อน มีสติตั้งมั่นไม่หลงลืม มีกายสงบระงับไม่กระสับกระส่าย มีจิตตั้งมั่น มีอารมณ์อันเดียว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุที่เป็นเช่นนี้ แม้จะนอนตื่นอยู่ เราก็เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีโอตตัปปะ มีความเพียรอันปรารภแล้ว มีตนส่งไปแล้วในการทำเช่นนั้นอยู่เนืองนิตย์.
ภิกษุพึงเดินสำรวม พึงยืนสำรวม พึงนั่งสำรวม
พึงนอนสำรวม พึงงอเข้าสำรวม พึงเหยียดออกสำรวม
พึงเป็นผู้พิจารณาถึงความเกิดขึ้น และความเสื่อมไปแห่งธรรม
และขันธ์ทั้งหลาย ทั่วภูมิเป็นที่อยู่ของหมู่สัตว์
ทั้งเบื้องบน ท่ามกลาง และเบื้องต่ำ
ภิกษุผู้ศึกษาปฏิปทาอันสมควรแก่ความสงบใจ มีสติทุกเมื่อ
นักปราชญ์ทั้งหลาย เรียกภิกษุผู้เช่นนั้นว่า ผู้มีใจเด็ดเดี่ยว.
