Five things for a weak and sick mendicant.(2)

“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu should await his time mindful and clearly comprehending. This is our instruction to you.
“And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu mindful? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having put away covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world. He dwells contemplating feelings in feelings … mind in mind … phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having put away covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world. It is in such a way that a bhikkhu is mindful.
“And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu exercise clear comprehension? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one who acts with clear comprehension when going forward and returning; when looking ahead and looking aside; when drawing in and extending the limbs; when wearing his robes and carrying his outer robe and bowl; when eating, drinking, chewing his food, and tasting; when defecating and urinating; when walking, standing, sitting, falling asleep, waking up, speaking, and keeping silent. It is in such a way that a bhikkhu exercises clear comprehension.
“A bhikkhu should await his time mindful and clearly comprehending. This is our instruction to you.
“Bhikkhus, while a bhikkhu dwells thus, mindful and clearly comprehending, diligent, ardent, and resolute, if there arises in him a pleasant feeling, he understands thus: ‘There has arisen in me a pleasant feeling. Now that is dependent, not independent. Dependent on what? Dependent on this very body. But this body is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen. So when the pleasant feeling has arisen in dependence on a body that is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, how could it be permanent?’ He dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in pleasant feeling, he dwells contemplating vanishing, contemplating fading away, contemplating cessation, contemplating relinquishment. As he dwells thus, the underlying tendency to lust in regard to the body and in regard to pleasant feeling is abandoned by him.
“Bhikkhus, while a bhikkhu dwells thus, mindful and clearly comprehending, diligent, ardent, and resolute, if there arises in him a painful feeling, he understands thus: ‘There has arisen in me a painful feeling. Now that is dependent, not independent. Dependent on what? Dependent on just this body. But this body is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen. So when the painful feeling has arisen in dependence on a body that is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, how could it be permanent? ’ He dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in painful feeling, he dwells contemplating vanishing, contemplating fading away, contemplating cessation, contemplating relinquishment. As he dwells thus, the underlying tendency to aversion in regard to the body and in regard to painful feeling is abandoned by him.
“Bhikkhus, while a bhikkhu dwells thus, mindful and clearly comprehending, diligent, ardent, and resolute, if there arises in him a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, he understands thus: ‘There has arisen in me a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Now that is dependent, not independent. Dependent on what? Dependent on just this body. But this body is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen. So when the neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling has arisen in dependence on a body that is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, how could it be permanent?’ He dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, he dwells contemplating vanishing, contemplating fading away, contemplating cessation, contemplating relinquishment. As he dwells thus, the underlying tendency to ignorance in regard to the body and in regard to neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is abandoned by him.
“If he feels a pleasant feeling, he understands: ‘It is impermanent’; he understands: ‘It is not held to’; he understands: ‘It is not delighted in.’ If he feels a painful feeling, he understands: ‘It is impermanent’; he understands: ‘It is not held to’; he understands: ‘It is not delighted in.’ If he feels a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, he understands: ‘It is impermanent’; he understands: ‘It is not held to’; he understands: ‘It is not delighted in.’
“If he feels a pleasant feeling, he feels it detached; if he feels a painful feeling, he feels it detached; if he feels a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, he feels it detached.
“When he feels a feeling terminating with the body, he understands: ‘I feel a feeling terminating with the body.’ When he feels a feeling terminating with life, he understands: ‘I feel a feeling terminating with life.’ He understands: ‘With the breakup of the body, following the exhaustion of life, all that is felt, not being delighted in, will become cool right here.’
“Just as, bhikkhus, an oil lamp burns in dependence on the oil and the wick, and with the exhaustion of the oil and the wick it is extinguished through lack of fuel, so too, bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu feels a feeling terminating with the body … terminating with life … He understands: ‘With the breakup of the body, following the exhaustion of life, all that is felt, not being delighted in, will become cool right here.’”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ กูฏาคารศาลา ป่ามหาวัน เขตเมืองเวสาลี ครั้งนั้นแลเป็นเวลาเย็น พระผู้มีพระภาคเสด็จออกจากที่หลีกเร้น เสด็จเข้าไปยังศาลาคนไข้ แล้วประทับนั่งบนอาสนะที่ปูลาดไว้ ครั้นแล้วตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาตรัสว่า.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงเป็นผู้มีสติ มีสัมปชัญญะ เมื่อรอคอยการทำกาละ นี้เป็นคำสอนของเราสำหรับพวกเธอทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีสติ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นกายในกายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นเวทนาในเวทนาทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นจิตในจิตอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นธรรมในธรรมทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อย่างนี้แล เรียกว่า ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีสติ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีสัมปชัญญะ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้รู้ตัวรอบคอบในการก้าวไป การถอยกลับ การแลดู การเหลียวดู การคู้ การเหยียด การทรงสังฆาฏิ บาตร จีวร การฉัน การดื่ม การเคี้ยว การลิ้ม การถ่ายอุจจาระ ปัสสาวะ การไป การหยุด การนั่ง การนอน การหลับ การตื่น การพูด การนิ่ง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อย่างนี้แล เรียกว่า ภิกษุเป็นผู้มีสัมปชัญญะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุพึงเป็นผู้มีสติ มีสัมปชัญญะ เมื่อรอคอยการทำกาละ นี้แล เป็นคำสอนของเราสำหรับพวกเธอทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุ มีสติ มีสัมปชัญญะ ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมอยู่อย่างนี้ เมื่อสุขเวทนาเกิดขึ้น เธอย่อมรู้ชัดอย่างนี้ว่า สุขเวทนานี้เกิดขึ้นแล้วแก่เรา แต่สุขเวทนานี้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยจึงเกิดขึ้นได้ ไม่อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยแล้วก็เกิดขึ้นไม่ได้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยอะไรเล่า อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยคือ กายนี้นั่นเอง ก็กายนี้ไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น สุขเวทนาที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยกาย ซึ่งไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น ดังนี้แล้ว จักเป็นสุขเวทนาที่เที่ยงมาแต่ไหน ดังนี้ ภิกษุนั้น เป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยงอยู่ ตามเห็นความเสื่อม ความจางคลายอยู่ ตามเห็นความดับไป ความสลัดคืนอยู่ในกายและในสุขเวทนา เมื่อเธอเป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยง … อยู่ในกายและในสุขเวทนาอยู่ดังนี้ เธอย่อมละเสียได้ ซึ่งราคานุสัย ในกายและในสุขเวทนานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุ มีสติ มีสัมปชัญญะ ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมอยู่อย่างนี้ เมื่อทุกขเวทนาเกิดขึ้น เธอย่อมรู้ชัดอย่างนี้ว่า ทุกขเวทนานี้เกิดขึ้นแล้วแก่เรา แต่ทุกขเวทนานี้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยจึงเกิดขึ้นได้ ไม่อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยแล้วก็เกิดขึ้นไม่ได้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยอะไรเล่า อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยคือ กายนี้นั่นเอง ก็กายนี้ไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น ทุกขเวทนาที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยกาย ซึ่งไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น ดังนี้แล้ว จักเป็นทุกขเวทนาที่เที่ยงมาแต่ไหน ดังนี้ ภิกษุนั้น เป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยงอยู่ ตามเห็นความเสื่อม ความจางคลายอยู่ ตามเห็นความดับไป ความสลัดคืนอยู่ในกายและในทุกขเวทนา เมื่อเธอเป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยง … อยู่ในกายและในทุกขเวทนาอยู่ดังนี้ เธอย่อมละเสียได้ ซึ่งปฏิฆานุสัย ในกายและในทุกขเวทนานั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าเมื่อภิกษุ มีสติ มีสัมปชัญญะ ไม่ประมาท มีความเพียรเผากิเลส มีตนส่งไปแล้วในธรรมอยู่อย่างนี้ เมื่ออทุกขมสุขเวทนาเกิดขึ้น เธอย่อมรู้ชัดอย่างนี้ว่า อทุกขมสุขเวทนานี้เกิดขึ้นแล้วแก่เรา แต่อทุกขมสุขเวทนานี้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยจึงเกิดขึ้นได้ ไม่อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยแล้วเกิดขึ้นไม่ได้ อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยอะไรเล่า อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยคือ กายนี้นั่นเอง ก็กายนี้ไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น อทุกขมสุขเวทนาที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะอาศัยกาย ซึ่งไม่เที่ยง มีปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง อาศัยเหตุปัจจัยเกิดขึ้น ดังนี้แล้ว จักเป็นอทุกขมสุขเวทนาที่เที่ยงมาแต่ไหน ดังนี้ ภิกษุนั้น เป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยงอยู่ ตามเห็นความเสื่อม ความจางคลายอยู่ ตามเห็นความดับไป ความสลัดคืนอยู่ในกายและในอทุกขมสุขเวทนา เมื่อเธอเป็นผู้ตามเห็นความไม่เที่ยง … อยู่ในกายและในอทุกขมสุขเวทนาอยู่ดังนี้ เธอย่อมละเสียได้ ซึ่งอวิชชานุสัย ในกายและในอทุกขมสุขเวทนานั้น.
ภิกษุนั้น ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นสุข เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า เวทนานั้นไม่เที่ยง ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้นเราไม่สยบมัวเมาแล้ว ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้น เราไม่เพลิดเพลินแล้ว ดังนี้ ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์ เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า เวทนานั้นไม่เที่ยง ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้นเราไม่สยบมัวเมาแล้ว ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้นเราไม่เพลิดเพลินแล้ว ดังนี้ ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นอทุกขมสุข เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า เวทนานั้นไม่เที่ยง ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้นเราไม่สยบมัวเมาแล้ว ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเวทนานั้นเราไม่เพลิดเพลินแล้ว ดังนี้.
ภิกษุนั้น ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นสุข ก็เป็นผู้ไม่ติดใจพัวพันเสวยเวทนานั้น ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์ ก็เป็นผู้ไม่ติดใจพัวพันเสวยเวทนานั้น ถ้าเสวยเวทนาอันเป็นอทุกขมสุข ก็เป็นผู้ไม่ติดใจพัวพันเสวยเวทนานั้น.
ภิกษุนั้น เมื่อเสวยเวทนาอันมีกายเป็นที่สุด ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเราเสวยเวทนาอันมีกายเป็นที่สุด เมื่อเสวยเวทนาอันมีชีวิตเป็นที่สุด ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเราเสวยเวทนาอันมีชีวิตเป็นที่สุด เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า เวทนาทั้งปวงอันเราไม่เพลิดเพลินแล้ว จักเป็นของเย็นในอัตตภาพนี้นั่นเทียว จนกระทั่งถึงที่สุดแห่งชีวิต เพราะการแตกทำลายแห่งกาย ดังนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนประทีปน้ำมัน ได้อาศัยน้ำมันและไส้แล้วก็ลุกโพลงอยู่ได้ เมื่อขาดปัจจัยเครื่องหล่อเลี้ยง เพราะขาดน้ำมันและไส้นั้นแล้ว ย่อมดับลง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ภิกษุนั้นเมื่อเสวยเวทนาอันมีกายเป็นที่สุด ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเราเสวยเวทนาอันมีกายเป็นที่สุด เมื่อเสวยเวทนาอันมีชีวิตเป็นที่สุด ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเราเสวยเวทนาอันมีชีวิตเป็นที่สุด เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า เวทนาทั้งปวงอันเราไม่เพลิดเพลินแล้ว จักเป็นของเย็นในอัตตภาพนี้นั่นเทียว จนกระทั่งถึงที่สุดแห่งชีวิต เพราะการแตกทำลายแห่งกาย ดังนี้.
