Four ways of practice. (2)

“Monks, there are these four modes of practice. Which four? Painful practice with slow intuition, painful practice with quick intuition, pleasant practice with slow intuition, & pleasant practice with quick intuition.
“And which is painful practice with slow intuition? There is the case where a certain individual is normally of an intensely passionate nature. He perpetually experiences pain & distress born of passion. Or he is normally of an intensely aversive nature. He perpetually experiences pain & distress born of aversion. Or he is normally of an intensely deluded nature. He perpetually experiences pain & distress born of delusion. These five faculties of his—the faculty of conviction, the faculty of persistence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of discernment—appear weakly. Because of their weakness, he attains only slowly the immediacy1 that leads to the ending of the effluents. This is called painful practice with slow intuition.
“And which is painful practice with quick intuition? There is the case where a certain individual is normally of an intensely passionate nature. 1. According to the Commentary, this means the concentration forming the path. This is apparently a reference to this passage in Sn 2:1:
What the excellent Awakened One extolled as pure
and called the concentration
of unmediated knowing:
No equal to that concentration can be found.
This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Dhamma.
By this truth may there be well-being.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปฏิปทา ๔ ประการ เหล่านี้มีอยู่ ๔ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้ช้า (ทุกขาปฏิปทาทันธาภิญญา)
๒) ปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้เร็ว (ทุกขาปฏิปทาขิปปาภิญญา)
๓) ปฏิบัติเป็นสุข รู้ได้ช้า (สุขาปฏิปทาทันธาภิญญา)
๔) ปฏิบัติเป็นสุข รู้ได้เร็ว (สุขาปฏิปทาขิปปาภิญญา).
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็การปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้ช้า เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้ปกติมีราคะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากราคะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติมีโทสะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโทสะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติมีโมหะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโมหะเนืองๆ บ้าง แต่อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ของเธอนั้น คือ สัทธินทรีย์ วิริยินทรีย์ สตินทรีย์ สมาธินทรีย์ ปัญญินทรีย์ ปรากฏว่าอ่อน เพราะเหตุที่อินทรีย์ทั้ง ๕ เหล่านี้ยังอ่อน บุคคลนั้น จึงบรรลุอนันตริยกิจ เพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะได้ช้า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้ช้า.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็การปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้เร็ว เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้ปกติมีราคะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากราคะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติมีโทสะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโทสะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติมีโมหะกล้า จึงได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโมหะเนืองๆ บ้าง แต่อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ของเธอนั้น คือ สัทธินทรีย์ วิริยินทรีย์ สตินทรีย์ สมาธินทรีย์ ปัญญินทรีย์ ปรากฏว่ามีประมาณยิ่ง (แก่กล้า) เพราะเหตุที่อินทรีย์ทั้ง ๕ เหล่านี้มีประมาณยิ่ง บุคคลนั้น จึงบรรลุอนันตริยกิจ เพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะได้เร็ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ปฏิบัติเป็นทุกข์ รู้ได้เร็ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็การปฏิบัติเป็นสุข รู้ได้ช้า เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้ปกติไม่มีราคะกล้า จึงไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากราคะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติไม่มีโทสะกล้า จึงไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโทสะเนืองๆ บ้าง เป็นผู้ปกติไม่มีโมหะกล้า จึงไม่ได้เสวยทุกขโทมนัสอันเกิดจากโมหะเนืองๆ บ้าง แต่อินทรีย์ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ของเธอนั้น คือ สัทธินทรีย์ วิริยินทรีย์ สตินทรีย์ สมาธินทรีย์ ปัญญินทรีย์ ปรากฏว่าอ่อน เพราะเหตุที่อินทรีย์ทั้ง ๕ เหล่านี้ยังอ่อน บุคคลนั้น จึงบรรลุอนันตริยกิจ เพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะได้ช้า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ปฏิบัติเป็นสุข รู้ได้ช้า.
