Dependent origination that begins from the contact.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying at Ñātika in the brick house. Then while the Buddha was in private retreat he spoke this exposition of the teaching:
“Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. Craving is a condition for grasping. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. … Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. … Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. … Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. … Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. Craving is a condition for grasping. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.
Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. … Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”
Now at that time a certain monk was standing listening in on the Buddha. The Buddha saw him and said, “Monk, did you hear that exposition of the teaching?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Learn that exposition of the teaching, memorize it, and remember it. That exposition of the teaching is beneficial and relates to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.”

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Ñatika in the Brick Hall. Then, while the Blessed One was alone in seclusion, he uttered this Dhamma exposition: “In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling comes to be; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging…. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“In dependence on the ear and sounds … In dependence on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling comes to be; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging…. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling comes to be; with feeling as condition, craving. But with the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving comes cessation of clinging; with the cessation of clinging, cessation of existence…. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.
“In dependence on the ear and sounds … In dependence on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling comes to be; with feeling as condition, craving. But with the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving comes cessation of clinging; with the cessation of clinging, cessation of existence…. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.”
Now on that occasion a certain bhikkhu was standing listening in on the Blessed One. The Blessed One saw him standing there listening in and said to him: “Did you hear that Dhamma exposition, bhikkhu?”
“Yes, venerable sir.”
“Learn that Dhamma exposition, bhikkhu, master it and remember it. That Dhamma exposition is beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the holy life.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่คิญชกาวาส1 (มหาปราสาทที่สร้างด้วยอิฐ) ใกล้บ้านญาติกะ2 ครั้งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงหลีกเร้นอยู่ในที่สงัด ได้กล่าวธรรมปริยายนี้ (ตามลำพัง) ว่า
เพราะอาศัยตาด้วย รูปทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดจักขุวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ตา+รูป+จักขุวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะตัณหาเป็นปัจจัย จึงอุปาทาน เพราะอุปาทานเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีภพ เพราะภพเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชาติ เพราะชาติเป็นปัจจัย ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายจึงเกิดขึ้น ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยหูด้วย เสียงทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดโสตวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (หู+เสียง+โสตวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา … ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยจมูกด้วย กลิ่นทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดฆานวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (จมูก+กลิ่น+ฆานวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา … ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้
เพราะอาศัยลิ้นด้วย รสทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดชิวหาวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ลิ้น+รส+ชิวหาวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา … ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยกายด้วย โผฏฐัพพะทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดกายวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (กาย+โผฏฐัพพะ+กายวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา … ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยใจด้วย ธรรมทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดมโนวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ใจ+ธรรม+มโนวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะตัณหาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีอุปาทาน เพราะอุปาทานเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีภพ เพราะภพเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชาติ เพราะชาติเป็นปัจจัย ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายจึงเกิดขึ้น ความความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยตาด้วย รูปทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดจักขุวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันพร้อมแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ตา+รูป+จักขุวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะความจางคลายดับไปโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้น จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน เพราะความดับแห่งอุปาทาน จึงมีความดับแห่งภพ เพราะความดับแห่งภพ จึงมีความดับแห่งชาติ เพราะความดับแห่งชาตินั่นแล ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลาย จึงดับสิ้น ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.

เพราะอาศัยจมูกด้วย กลิ่นทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดฆานวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (จมูก+กลิ่น+ฆานวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะความจางคลายดับไปโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้น จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน … ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยลิ้นด้วย รสทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดชิวหาวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ลิ้น+รส+ชิวหาวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะความจางคลายดับไปโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้น จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน … ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยกายด้วย โผฏฐัพพะทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดกายวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (กาย+โผฏฐัพพะ+กายวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะความจางคลายดับไปโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้น จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน … ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมี ด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
เพราะอาศัยใจด้วย ธรรมทั้งหลายด้วย จึงเกิดมโนวิญญาณ ความประชุมกันแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการ (ใจ+ธรรม+มโนวิญญาณ) นั้นคือผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะความจางคลายดับไปโดยไม่เหลือแห่งตัณหานั้น จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน เพราะความดับแห่งอุปาทาน จึงมีความดับแห่งภพ เพราะความดับแห่งภพ จึงมีความดับแห่งชาติ เพราะความดับแห่งชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลาย จึงดับสิ้น ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
สมัยนั้น ภิกษุองค์หนึ่ง ได้ยืนแอบฟังพระผู้มีพระภาคอยู่ พระผู้มีพระภาคทอดพระเนตรเห็นภิกษุผู้ยืนแอบฟังนั้นแล้ว ได้ทรงกล่าวกะภิกษุนั้นว่า
ภิกษุ เธอได้ยินธรรมปริยายนี้แล้วใช่หรือไม่.
ภิกษุนั้นตอบว่า ได้ยินแล้ว ภันเต.
ภิกษุ เธอจงรับเอาธรรมปริยายนี้ ภิกษุ เธอจงเล่าเรียนธรรมปริยายนี้ ภิกษุ เธอจงทรงจำธรรมปริยายนี้ ภิกษุ ธรรมปริยายนี้ประกอบด้วยประโยชน์ เป็นเบื้องต้นแห่งพรหมจรรย์ ดังนี้.
