The Buddha imparted Dhamma to a junior mendicant who was gravely ill. (2)

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, in such and such a monastery there’s a mendicant who is junior and not well-known. He’s sick, suffering, gravely ill. Please go to him out of compassion.”
When the Buddha heard that the mendicant was junior and ill, understanding that he was not well-known, he went to him. That mendicant saw the Buddha coming off in the distance and tried to rise on his cot.
Then the Buddha said to that monk, “It’s all right, mendicant, don’t get up. There are some seats spread out, I will sit there.”
He sat on the seat spread out and said to the mendicant, “I hope you’re keeping well, mendicant; I hope you’re alright. I hope that your pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.”
“Sir, I’m not keeping well, I’m not alright. …
I have no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct.”
“In that case, mendicant, why do you have remorse and regret?”
“Because I understand that the Buddha has not taught the Dhamma merely for the sake of ethical purity.”
“If that is so, what exactly do you understand to be the purpose of teaching the Dhamma?”
“I understand that the Buddha has taught the Dhamma for the purpose of complete extinguishment by not grasping.”
“Good, good, mendicant! It’s good that you understand that I’ve taught the Dhamma for the purpose of complete extinguishment by not grasping. For that is indeed the purpose.
“What do you think, mendicant? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?”
“Impermanent, sir.” …
“Is the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … mind consciousness … mind contact … The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact: is that permanent or impermanent?”
“Impermanent, sir.”
“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”
“Suffering, sir.”
“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and liable to fall apart, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”
“No, sir.”
“Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye … ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … mind consciousness … mind contact … They grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’”
That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, that mendicant was happy with what the Buddha said. And while this discourse was being spoken, the mind of that mendicant was freed from defilements by not grasping.

At Savatthi. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him: “Venerable sir, in such and such a dwelling there is a certain newly ordained bhikkhu, not well known, who is sick, afflicted, gravely ill. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach that bhikkhu out of compassion.”
Then, when the Blessed One heard the words “newly ordained” and “sick,” and understood that he was not a well-known bhikkhu, he went to him. That bhikkhu saw the Blessed One coming in the distance and stirred on his bed. The Blessed One said to him: “Enough, bhikkhu, do not stir on your bed. There are these seats ready, I will sit down there.”
The Blessed One then sat down on the appointed seat and said to that bhikkhu: “I hope you are bearing up, bhikkhu, I hope you are getting better. I hope that your painful feelings are subsiding and not increasing, and that their subsiding, not their increase, is to be discerned.”
“Venerable sir, I am not bearing up, I am not getting better. Strong painful feelings are increasing in me, not subsiding, and their increase, not their subsiding, is to be discerned.”
“I hope then, bhikkhu, that you are not troubled by remorse and regret.”
“Indeed, venerable sir, I have quite a lot of remorse and regret.”
“I hope, bhikkhu, that you have nothing for which to reproach yourself in regard to virtue.”
“I have nothing, venerable sir, for which to reproach myself in regard to virtue.”
“Then, bhikkhu, if you have nothing for which to reproach yourself in regard to virtue, why are you troubled by remorse and regret?”
“I understand, venerable sir, that it is not for the sake of purification of virtue that the Dhamma has been taught by the Blessed One.”
“If, bhikkhu you understand that the Dhamma has not been taught by me for the sake of purification of virtue, then for what purpose do you understand the Dhamma to have been taught by me?”
“Venerable sir, I understand the Dhamma to have been taught by the Blessed One for the sake of final Nibbāna without clinging.”
“Good, good, bhikkhu! It is good that you understand the Dhamma to have been taught by me for the sake of final Nibbāna without clinging. For the Dhamma is taught by me for the sake of final Nibbāna without clinging.
“What do you think, bhikkhu, is the eye permanent or impermanent?”—“Impermanent, venerable sir.”… “Is the ear … the nose … the tongue … the body … the mind … mind-consciousness … mind-contact … whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—permanent or impermanent?”—“Impermanent, venerable sir.”—“Is what is impermanent suffering or happiness?”—“Suffering, venerable sir.”—“Is what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, this I am, this is my self’?”—“No, venerable sir.”
“Seeing thus … He understands: ‘… there is no more for this state of being.’”
This is what the Blessed One said. Elated, that bhikkhu delighted in the Blessed One’s statement. And while this discourse was being spoken, that bhikkhu’s mind was liberated from the taints by nonclinging.
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต ในวิหารโน้น มีภิกษุใหม่รูปหนึ่ง เป็นภิกษุที่ไม่ใครรู้จัก อาพาธ ถึงความทุกข์ เป็นไข้หนัก สาธุ ภันเต ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดอาศัยความเอ็นดูเกื้อกูล เสด็จเข้าไปหาภิกษุนั้นเถิด ครั้งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงสดับคำว่า ภิกษุใหม่เป็นไข้ ทรงทราบชัดว่าเป็นภิกษุที่ไม่มีใครรู้จัก จึงเสด็จเข้าไปหาภิกษุนั้น.
ภิกษุผู้อาพาธนั้น ได้เห็นพระผู้มีพระภาคเสด็จมาแต่ไกล ครั้นเห็นแล้ว จึงลุกขึ้นจากเตียง ครั้งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะภิกษุนั้นว่า
อย่าเลยภิกษุ เธออย่าลุกขึ้นจากเตียงเลย อาสนะที่เขาปูลาดไว้เหล่านี้มีอยู่ เราจักนั่งบนอาสนะนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับนั่งบนอาสนะที่เขาปูลาดไว้ ครั้นแล้วได้ตรัสถามภิกษุนั้นว่า ภิกษุ เธอพออดทนได้หรือ เธอพอยังอัตภาพให้เป็นไปได้หรือ ทุกขเวทนาลดน้อยลง ไม่กำเริบขึ้นหรือ ความทุเลาย่อมปรากฏ ความกำเริบไม่ปรากฏหรือ.
ภันเต ข้าพระองค์ทนไม่ไหว ไม่สามารถจะยังอัตภาพให้เป็นไปได้ ทุกขเวทนาของข้าพระองค์แก่กล้ายิ่งนัก ไม่ลดน้อยไปเลย ความกำเริบปรากฏ ความทุเลาไม่ปรากฏ.
ภิกษุ เธอไม่มีความรังเกียจ ไม่มีความเดือดร้อนใดๆ หรือ.
ภันเต แท้ที่จริง ข้าพระองค์มีความรังเกียจ มีความเดือดร้อนอยู่ไม่น้อยเลย.
ภิกษุ เธอติเตียนตนเองโดยศีลได้หรือไม่.
ภันเต ข้าพระองค์ติเตียนตนเองโดยศีลไม่ได้เลย.
ภิกษุ ถ้าเธอติเตียนตนเองโดยศีลไม่ได้แล้ว เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น เธอจะมีความรังเกียจ มีความเดือดร้อนเพราะเหตุอะไรเล่า.
ภันเต ข้าพระองค์ยังไม่รู้ทั่วถึงธรรม ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงแสดงแล้ว เพื่อสีลวิสุทธิ (ความบริสุทธิ, ความหมดจด ของศีล).
ภิกษุ ถ้าว่าเธอยังไม่รู้ทั่วถึงธรรม ที่เราแสดงแล้ว เพื่อสีลวิสุทธิ เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น เธอจะรู้ทั่วถึงธรรม ที่เราแสดงแล้ว ประพฤติเพื่ออะไรเล่า.
ภันเต ข้าพระองค์รู้ทั่วถึงธรรม ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงแสดงแล้ว เพื่ออนุปาทาปรินิพพาน.
สาธุ สาธุ ภิกษุ เป็นการถูกต้องดีแล้ว ที่เธอรู้ทั่วถึงธรรม ที่เราแสดงแล้ว เพื่ออนุปาทาปรินิพพาน ภิกษุ เพราะว่าธรรมที่เราแสดงแล้ว ล้วนมีอนุปาทาปรินิพพานเป็นความมุ่งหมาย.
ภิกษุ เธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร ตาเที่ยง หรือไม่เที่ยง.
ไม่เที่ยง ภันเต.
ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง สิ่งนั้นเป็นทุกข์หรือเป็นสุขเล่า.
เป็นทุกข์ ภันเต.
ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ มีความแปรปรวนเป็นธรรมดา ควรหรือหนอที่จะตามเห็นสิ่งนั้นว่า นั่นของเรา นั่นเป็นเรา นั่นเป็นตัวตนของเรา.
ไม่ควรเห็นอย่างนั้น ภันเต.
หู … จมูก … ลิ้น … กาย … ใจ เที่ยงหรือไม่เที่ยง.
ไม่เที่ยง ภันเต.
ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง สิ่งนั้นเป็นทุกข์หรือเป็นสุขเล่า.
เป็นทุกข์ ภันเต.
ก็สิ่งใดไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ มีความแปรปรวนเป็นธรรมดา ควรหรือหนอที่จะตามเห็นสิ่งนั้นว่า นั่นของเรา นั่นเป็นเรา นั่นเป็นตัวตนของเรา.
ไม่ควรเห็นอย่างนั้น ภันเต.
ภิกษุ อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้ว เห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในตา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในหู ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในจมูก ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในลิ้น ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในกาย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในใจ เมื่อเบื่อหน่าย ย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัด ย่อมหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่า หลุดพ้นแล้ว เธอย่อมรู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นที่จะต้องทำ เพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มีอีก ดังนี้.
พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้จบลงแล้ว ภิกษุนั้นชื่นชมยินดี ภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาค ก็แลเมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้อยู่ จิตของภิกษุนั้น ก็หลุดพ้นจากอาสวะเพราะไม่มีอุปาทาน ดังนี้.
