What makes the true teaching last long after the final extinguishment of the Buddha.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“What is the cause, Master Gotama, what is the reason why the true teaching does not last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One? And what is the cause, what is the reason why the true teaching does last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One?”
“Brahmin, it’s because of not developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching doesn’t last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One. It’s because of developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching does last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One.
What four? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. It’s because of not developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching doesn’t last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One. It’s because of developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching does last long after the final extinguishment of the Realized One.”
When he said this, the brahmin said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Savatthi, in Jeta’s Grove, Anathapiṇḍika’s Park. Then a certain brahmin approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side and said to the Blessed One:
“Master Gotama, what is the cause and reason why the true Dhamma does not endure long after a Tathagata has attained final Nibbāna? And what is the cause and reason why the true Dhamma endures long after a Tathagata has attained final Nibbāna?”
“It is, brahmin, because the four establishments of mindfulness are not developed and cultivated that the true Dhamma does not endure long after a Tathagata has attained final Nibbāna. And it is because the four establishments of mindfulness are developed and cultivated that the true Dhamma endures long after a Tathagata has attained final Nibbāna. What four?
Here, brahmin, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world. … feelings in feelings … mind in mind … phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world.
It is because these four establishments of mindfulness are not developed and cultivated … are developed and cultivated that the true Dhamma endures long after a Tathagata has attained final Nibbāna.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น พราหมณ์คนหนึ่งเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ได้ปราศรัยกับพระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้วจึงนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
พระโคดมผู้เจริญ อะไรเป็นเหตุ อะไรเป็นปัจจัย ที่เมื่อพระตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว พระสัทธรรมจะไม่ตั้งอยู่นาน พระโคดมผู้เจริญ อะไรเป็นเหตุ อะไรเป็นปัจจัย ที่เมื่อพระตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว พระสัทธรรมจะตั้งอยู่นาน.
พราหมณ์ เพราะไม่มีการกระทำให้เจริญ เพราะไม่มีการกระทำให้มากซึ่งสติปัฏฐานทั้ง ๔ ในเมื่อตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว สัทธรรมย่อมไม่ตั้งอยู่นาน พราหมณ์ แต่เพราะมีการกระทำให้เจริญ มีการกระทำให้มาก ซึ่งสติปัฏฐานทั้ง ๔ ในเมื่อตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว สัทธรรมย่อมตั้งอยู่นาน สติปัฏฐานทั้ง ๔ อะไรบ้าง คือ พราหมณ์ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้
เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นกายในกายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย.
เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นเวทนาในเวทนาทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย.
เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นจิตในจิตอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย.
เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นธรรมในธรรมทั้งหลายอยู่ มีความเพียร มีสัมปชัญญะ มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสีย.
พราหมณ์ เพราะไม่มีการกระทำให้เจริญ เพราะไม่มีการกระทำให้มากซึ่งสติปัฏฐานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้แล ในเมื่อตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว สัทธรรมย่อมไม่ตั้งอยู่นาน พราหมณ์ แต่เพราะมีการกระทำให้เจริญ มีการกระทำให้มาก ซึ่งสติปัฏฐานทั้ง ๔ เหล่านี้แล ในเมื่อตถาคตปรินิพพานแล้ว สัทธรรมย่อมตั้งอยู่นาน ดังนี้.
