Gods still live in suffering.

“Mendicants, gods and humans like sights, they love them and enjoy them. But when sights perish, fade away, and cease, gods and humans live in suffering.
Gods and humans like sounds … smells … tastes … touches … thoughts, they love them and enjoy them. But when thoughts perish, fade away, and cease, gods and humans live in suffering.
The Realized One has truly understood the origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape of sights, so he doesn’t like, love, or enjoy them. When sights perish, fade away, and cease, the Realized One lives happily.
The Realized One has truly understood the origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape of sounds … smells … tastes … touches … thoughts, so he doesn’t like, love, or enjoy them. When thoughts perish, fade away, and cease, the Realized One lives happily.”
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“Sights, sounds, tastes, smells,
touches and thoughts, the lot of them—
they’re likable, desirable, and pleasurable
as long as you can say that they exist.
For all the world with its gods,
this is what they agree is happiness.
And where they cease
is agreed on as suffering for them.
The noble ones have seen that happiness
is the cessation of identity.
This insight by those who see
contradicts the whole world.
What others say is happiness
the noble ones say is suffering.
What others say is suffering
the noble ones know as happiness.
See, this teaching is hard to understand,
it confuses the ignorant.
There is darkness for the shrouded;
blackness for those who don’t see.
But the good are open;
like light for those who see.
Though close, they do not understand,
those fools inexpert in the teaching.
They’re mired in desire to be reborn,
flowing along the stream of lives,
mired in Māra’s sway:
this teaching isn’t easy for them to understand.
Who, apart from the noble ones,
is qualified to understand this state?
When they’ve rightly understood it,
they’re extinguished without defilements.”

“Bhikkhus, devas and humans delight in forms, take delight in forms, rejoice in forms. With the change, fading away, and cessation of forms, devas and humans dwell in suffering. Devas and humans delight in sounds … delight in odours … delight in tastes … delight in tactile objects … delight in mental phenomena, take delight in mental phenomena, rejoice in mental phenomena. With the change, fading away, and cessation of mental phenomena, devas and humans dwell in suffering.
“But, bhikkhus, the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, has understood as they really are the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of forms. He does not delight in forms, does not take delight in forms, does not rejoice in forms. With the change, fading away, and cessation of forms, the Tathagata dwells happily.
“He has understood as they really are the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of sounds … odours … tastes … tactile objects … mental phenomena. He does not delight in mental phenomena, does not take delight in mental phenomena, does not rejoice in mental phenomena. With the change, fading away, and cessation of mental phenomena, the Tathagata dwells happily.”
This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:
“Forms, sounds, odours, tastes,
Tactiles and all objects of mind—
Desirable, lovely, agreeable,
So long as it’s said: ‘They are.’
“These are considered happiness
By the world with its devas;
But where these cease,
That they consider suffering.
“The noble ones have seen as happiness
The ceasing of identity.
This view of those who clearly see
Runs counter to the entire world.
“What others speak of as happiness,
That the noble ones say is suffering;
What others speak of as suffering,
That the noble ones know as bliss.
“Behold this Dhamma hard to comprehend:
Here the foolish are bewildered.
For those with blocked minds it is obscure,
Sheer darkness for those who do not see.
“But for the good it is disclosed,
It is light here for those who see.
The dullards unskilled in the Dhamma
Don’t understand it in its presence.
“This Dhamma isn’t easily understood
By those afflicted with lust for existence,
Who flow along in the stream of existence,
Deeply mired in Mara’s realm.
“Who else apart from the noble ones
Are able to understand this state?
When they have rightly known that state,
The taintless ones are fully quenched.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีรูปเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในรูป บันเทิงด้วยรูป เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของรูป.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีเสียงเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในเสียง บันเทิงด้วยเสียง เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของเสียง.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีกลิ่นเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในกลิ่น บันเทิงด้วยกลิ่น เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของกลิ่น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีรสเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในรส บันเทิงด้วยรส เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของรส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีโผฏฐัพพะเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในโผฏฐัพพะ บันเทิงด้วยโผฏฐัพพะ เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของโผฏฐัพพะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย มีธรรมเป็นที่มายินดี ยินดีแล้วในธรรม บันเทิงด้วยธรรม เทวดาและมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมอยู่เป็นทุกข์ เพราะความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของธรรม.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนตถาคตผู้เป็นอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธะ รู้แจ้งตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรูปทั้งหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีรูปเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในรูป ไม่บันเทิงด้วยรูป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของรูป.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตรู้แจ้งตามเป็นจริง ซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งเสียงทั้งหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีเสียงเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในเสียง ไม่บันเทิงด้วยเสียง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของเสียง.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตรู้แจ้งตามเป็นจริง ซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งกลิ่นทั้งหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีกลิ่นเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในกลิ่น ไม่บันเทิงด้วยกลิ่น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของกลิ่น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตรู้แจ้งตามเป็นจริง ซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรสทั้งหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีรสเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในรส ไม่บันเทิงด้วยรส ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของรส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตรู้แจ้งตามเป็นจริง ซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งโผฏฐัพพะทั้งหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีโผฏฐัพพะเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในโผฏฐัพพะ ไม่บันเทิงด้วยโผฏฐัพพะ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของโผฏฐัพพะ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตรู้แจ้งตามเป็นจริง ซึ่งเหตุเกิดขึ้น ความตั้งอยู่ไม่ได้ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งธรรมหลายแล้ว ไม่เป็นผู้มีธรรมเป็นที่มายินดี ไม่ยินดีในธรรม ไม่บันเทิงด้วยธรรม ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตย่อมอยู่เป็นสุข แม้ความแปรปรวน ความเสื่อมสลาย และความดับไปของธรรม.
รูปทั้งหลาย เสียงทั้งหลาย กลิ่นทั้งหลาย รสทั้งหลาย
ผัสสะทั้งหลาย ธรรมทั้งหลายทั้งสิ้น อันน่าปรารถนา
น่ารักใคร่ น่าชอบใจ ยังเป็นสิ่งกล่าวได้ว่ามีอยู่เพียงใด.
มนุษยโลกพร้อมด้วยเทวโลก ก็ยังสมมติว่า นั่นสุขอยู่เพียงนั้น
ถ้าเมื่อสิ่งเหล่านั้นแตกดับลงในที่ใด
สัตว์เหล่านั้น ก็สมมติว่านั่นทุกข์ในที่นั้น.
สิ่งที่พระอริยเจ้าทั้งหลายเห็นว่าเป็นความสุข
ก็คือความดับสนิทแห่งสักกายะทั้งหลาย
แต่สิ่งนี้กลับเป็นข้าศึกกับชาวโลกทั้งปวง.
สิ่งใดที่สัตว์อื่นกล่าวแล้วโดยความเป็นสุข
พระอริยเจ้าทั้งหลายกล่าวสิ่งนั้นโดยความเป็นทุกข์
สิ่งใดที่สัตว์อื่นกล่าวแล้วโดยความเป็นทุกข์
พระอริยะเจ้าทั้งหลายรู้แจ้งสิ่งนั้นโดยความเป็นสุข.
เธอจงเห็นธรรมที่รู้ได้ยาก คนพาลผู้หลง ไม่รู้แจ้งในนิพพานนี้
ความมืดย่อมมีแก่บุคคลผู้ถูกนิวรณ์หุ้มห่อ
เหมือนความมืดมนย่อมมีแก่บุคคลผู้มองไม่เห็น
นิพพานย่อมมีแก่สัปบุรุษ เหมือนแสงสว่างย่อมมีแก่บุคคลผู้มองเห็น.
ชนทั้งหลายผู้แสวงหา ไม่ฉลาดในธรรม ถึงอยู่ใกล้ก็ไม่รู้แจ้ง
ธรรมนี้อันบุคคลผู้ถูกความกำหนัดในภพครอบงำ
ผู้แล่นไปตามกระแสตัณหาในภพ
ผู้อันบ่วงแห่งมารคล้องไว้แล้ว ไม่ตรัสรู้ได้ง่ายเลย.
ใครหนอ เว้นจากพระอริยะเจ้าทั้งหลายแล้ว
ย่อมควรเพื่อจะตรัสรู้บท ที่พระอริยะเจ้าทั้งหลายรู้อยู่โดยชอบ
เป็นผู้ไม่มีอาสวะปรินิพพาน.
