One is on retreat in both body and mind; and one is on retreat in neither body nor mind.

“Mendicants, these four people are found in the world. What four?
One is on retreat in body, but not mind;
one is on retreat in mind, but not body;
one is on retreat in neither body nor mind; and
one is on retreat in both body and mind.
And how is a person on retreat in body, but not mind? It’s when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. But they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts. That’s how a person is on retreat in body, but not mind.
And how is a person on retreat in mind, but not body? It’s when a person doesn’t frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. But they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. That’s how a person is on retreat in mind, but not body.
And how is a person on retreat in neither body nor mind? It’s when a person doesn’t frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. And they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts. That’s how a person is on retreat in neither body nor mind.
And how is a person on retreat in both body and mind? It’s when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. And they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. That’s how a person is on retreat in both body and mind.
These are the four people found in the world.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๔ จำพวกเหล่านี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๔ จำพวกอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ผู้ที่กายออก แต่จิตไม่ออก
๒) ผู้ที่กายไม่ออก แต่จิตออก
๓) ผู้ที่กายก็ไม่ออก จิตก็ไม่ออก
๔) ผู้ที่กายก็ออก จิตก็ออก
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายออก แต่จิตไม่ออกเป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เสพเสนาสนะอันสงัด คือ ป่าและป่าทึบ ในที่นั้นๆ เขาตรึกถึงกามวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงพยาบาทวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงวิหิงสาวิตกบ้าง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายออก แต่จิตไม่ออก เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายไม่ออก แต่จิตออกเป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ไม่ได้เสพเสนาสนะอันสงัด คือ ป่าและป่าทึบ ในที่นั้นๆ เขาตรึกถึงเนกขัมมวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงอัพยาบาทวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงอวิหิงสาวิตกบ้าง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายไม่ออก แต่จิตออก เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายก็ไม่ออก จิตก็ไม่ออกเป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ไม่ได้เสพเสนาสนะอันสงัด คือ ป่าและป่าทึบ ในที่นั้นๆ เขาตรึกถึงกามวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงพยาบาทวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงวิหิงสาวิตกบ้าง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายก็ไม่ออก จิตก็ไม่ออก เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายก็ออก จิตก็ออก เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เสพเสนาสนะอันสงัด คือ ป่าและป่าทึบ ในที่นั้นๆ เขาตรึกถึงเนกขัมมวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงอัพยาบาทวิตกบ้าง ตรึกถึงอวิหิงสาวิตกบ้าง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ที่กายก็ออก จิตก็ออก เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๔ จำพวกเหล่านี้แล มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก.
