The origin and the cessation of this whole mass of suffering. (1)

At Sāvatthī.
“Mendicants, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future. When there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future. When there is rebirth into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan or have underlying tendencies, this doesn’t become a support for the continuation of consciousness. With no support, consciousness is not established. When consciousness is not established and doesn’t grow, there’s no rebirth into a new state of existence in the future. When there is no rebirth into a new state of existence in the future, future rebirth, old age, and death cease, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

At Savatthī. “Bhikkhus, what one intends, and what one plans, and whatever one has a tendency towards: this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis there is a support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is established and has come to growth, there is the production of future renewed existence. When there is the production of future renewed existence, future birth, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“If, bhikkhus, one does not intend, and one does not plan, but one still has a tendency towards something, this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis, there is a support for the establishing of consciousness…. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“But, bhikkhus, when one does not intend, and one does not plan, and one does not have a tendency towards anything, no basis exists for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is no basis, there is no support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is unestablished and does not come to growth, there is no production of future renewed existence. When there is no production of future renewed existence, future birth, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair cease. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลย่อมคิดถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ ย่อมดำริถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ และย่อมมีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปย่อมมี เมื่อการเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปมีอยู่ ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกะปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายจึงเกิดขึ้นครบถ้วนต่อไป ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลย่อมไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใด ย่อมไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใด แต่เขายังมีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปย่อมมี เมี่อการเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปมีอยู่ ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกะปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายจึงเกิดขึ้นครบถ้วนต่อไป ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ถ้าว่าบุคคลย่อมไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใดด้วย ย่อมไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใดด้วย และย่อมไม่มีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดด้วยในกาลใด ในกาลนั้น สิ่งนั้นย่อมไม่เป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์ไม่มี ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมไม่มี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นไม่ตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ ไม่เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปย่อมไม่มี เมื่อการเกิดขึ้นแห่งภพใหม่ต่อไปไม่มี ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกะปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายต่อไป จึงดับสิ้น ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้ ดังนี้แล.
