How to fix the sluggish and restless mind.

Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
(The same as the previous discourse.)
“Mendicants, when wanderers of other religions say this, you should say to them: ‘Reverends, which awakening factors should not be developed when the mind is sluggish? And which awakening factors should be developed at that time? Which awakening factors should not be developed when the mind is restless? And which awakening factors should be developed at that time?’ Questioned like this, the wanderers of other religions would be stumped, and, in addition, would get frustrated. Why is that? Because they’re out of their element.
I don’t see anyone in this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—who could provide a satisfying answer to these questions except for the Realized One or his disciple or someone who has heard it from them.
When the mind is sluggish, it’s the wrong time to develop the awakening factors of tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Why is that? Because it’s hard to stimulate a sluggish mind with these things.
Suppose someone wanted to make a small fire flare up. If they toss wet grass, cow-dung, and timber on it, spray it with water, and scatter dirt on it, could they make it flare up?”
“No, sir.”
“In the same way, when the mind is sluggish, it’s the wrong time to develop the awakening factors of tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Why is that? Because it’s hard to stimulate a sluggish mind with these things.
When the mind is sluggish, it’s the right time to develop the awakening factors of investigation of principles, energy, and rapture. Why is that? Because it’s easy to stimulate a sluggish mind with these things.
Suppose someone wanted to make a small fire flare up. If they toss dry grass, cow-dung, and timber on it, blow on it, and don’t scatter dirt on it, could they make it flare up?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when the mind is sluggish, it’s the right time to develop the awakening factors of investigation of principles, energy, and rapture. Why is that? Because it’s easy to stimulate a sluggish mind with these things.
When the mind is restless, it’s the wrong time to develop the awakening factors of investigation of principles, energy, and rapture. Why is that? Because it’s hard to settle a restless mind with these things.
Suppose someone wanted to extinguish a bonfire. If they toss dry grass, cow-dung, and timber on it, blow on it, and don’t scatter dirt on it, could they extinguish it?”
“No, sir.”
“In the same way, when the mind is restless, it’s the wrong time to develop the awakening factors of investigation of principles, energy, and rapture. Why is that? Because it’s hard to settle a restless mind with these things.
When the mind is restless, it’s the right time to develop the awakening factors of tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Why is that? Because it’s easy to settle a restless mind with these things.
Suppose someone wanted to extinguish a bonfire. If they toss wet grass, cow-dung, and timber on it, spray it with water, and scatter dirt on it, could they extinguish it?”
“Yes, sir.”
“In the same way, when the mind is restless, it’s the right time to develop the awakening factors of tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Why is that? Because it’s easy to settle a restless mind with these things. But mindfulness is always useful, I say.”

Then, in the morning, a number of bhikkhus dressed and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Savatthī for alms … as in §52 down to: …The Blessed One said:
“Bhikkhus, when wanderers of other sects speak thus, they should be asked: ‘Friends, when the mind becomes sluggish, which factors of enlightenment is it untimely to develop on that occasion, and which factors of enlightenment is it timely to develop on that occasion? Then, friends, when the mind becomes excited, which factors of enlightenment is it untimely to develop on that occasion, and which factors of enlightenment is it timely to develop on that occasion?’ Being asked thus, those wanderers would not be able to reply and, further, they would meet with vexation. For what reason? Because that would not be within their domain. I do not see anyone, bhikkhus, in this world with its devas, Mara, and Brahma, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, who could satisfy the mind with an answer to these questions except the Tathagata or a disciple of the Tathagata or one who has heard it from them.
i. The sluggish mind: untimely
“On an occasion, bhikkhus, when the mind becomes sluggish, it is untimely to develop the enlightenment factor of tranquillity, the enlightenment factor of concentration, and the enlightenment factor of equanimity. For what reason? Because the mind is sluggish, bhikkhus, and it is difficult to arouse it with those things.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, a man wants to make a small fire flare up. If he throws wet grass, wet cowdung, and wet timber into it, sprays it with water, and scatters soil over it, would he be able to make that small fire flare up?”
“No, venerable sir.”
“So too, bhikkhus, on an occasion when the mind becomes sluggish, it is untimely to develop the enlightenment factor of tranquillity, the enlightenment factor of concentration, and the enlightenment factor of equanimity. For what reason? Because the mind is sluggish, bhikkhus, and it is difficult to arouse it with those things.
ii. The sluggish mind: timely
“On an occasion, bhikkhus, when the mind becomes sluggish, it is timely to develop the enlightenment factor of discrimination of states, the enlightenment factor of energy, and the enlightenment factor of rapture. For what reason? Because the mind is sluggish, bhikkhus, and it is easy to arouse it with those things.

“Yes, venerable sir.”
“So too, bhikkhus, on an occasion when the mind becomes sluggish, it is timely to develop the enlightenment factor of discrimination of states, the enlightenment factor of energy, and the enlightenment factor of rapture. For what reason? Because the mind is sluggish, bhikkhus, and it is easy to arouse it with those things.
iii. The excited mind: untimely
“On an occasion, bhikkhus, when the mind becomes excited, it is untimely to develop the enlightenment factor of discrimination of states, the enlightenment factor of energy, and the enlightenment factor of rapture. For what reason? Because the mind is excited, bhikkhus, and it is difficult to calm it down with those things.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, a man wants to extinguish a great bonfire. If he throws dry grass, dry cowdung, and dry timber into it, blows on it, and does not scatter soil over it, would he be able to extinguish that great bonfire?”
“No, venerable sir.”
“So too, bhikkhus, on an occasion when the mind becomes excited, it is untimely to develop the enlightenment factor of discrimination of states, the enlightenment factor of energy, and the enlightenment factor of rapture. For what reason? Because the mind is excited, bhikkhus, and it is difficult to calm it down with those things.
iv. The excited mind: timely
“On an occasion, bhikkhus, when the mind becomes excited, it is timely to develop the enlightenment factor of tranquillity, the enlightenment factor of concentration, and the enlightenment factor of equanimity. For what reason? Because the mind is excited, bhikkhus, and it is easy to calm it down with those things.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, a man wants to extinguish a great bonfire. If he throws wet grass, wet cowdung, and wet timber into it, sprays it with water, and scatters soil over it, would he be able to extinguish that great bonfire?”
“Yes, venerable sir.”
“So too, bhikkhus, on an occasion when the mind becomes excited, it is timely to develop the enlightenment factor of tranquillity, the enlightenment factor of concentration, and the enlightenment factor of equanimity. For what reason? Because the mind is excited, bhikkhus, and it is easy to calm it down with those things.
“But mindfulness, bhikkhus, I say is always useful.”
ครั้งนั้น ในเวลาเช้า ภิกษุจำนวนมากนุ่งแล้ว ถือบาตรและจีวรเข้าไปบิณฑบาตในพระนครสาวัตถี ภิกษุเหล่านั้นได้มีความคิดว่า เวลานี้ยังเช้านัก ที่เราจะเข้าไปบิณฑบาตในนครสาวัตถี ทางที่ดี เราทั้งหลายควรเข้าไปยังอารามของพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกเถิด ภิกษุเหล่านั้นจึงเข้าไปยังอารามของพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชก ได้ปราศรัยกับพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชก ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้ว จึงนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกได้กล่าวกับภิกษุเหล่านั้นว่า
อาวุโสทั้งหลาย พระสมณโคดมแสดงธรรมแก่สาวกทั้งหลายอย่างนี้ว่า มาเถิด ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงละนิวรณ์ ๕ อันเป็นอุปกิเลสของจิต1 ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง แล้วเจริญโพชฌงค์ ๗ ตามความเป็นจริงเกิด ดังนี้ แม้พวกเราก็แสดงธรรมแก่สาวกทั้งหลายอย่างนี้ว่า มาเถิด อาวุโสทั้งหลาย ท่านทั้งหลายจงละนิวรณ์ ๕ อันเป็นอุปกิเลสของจิต ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง แล้วเจริญโพชฌงค์ ๗ ตามความเป็นจริงเถิด อาวุโสทั้งหลาย ในการแสดงธรรมของเรานี้ อะไรเป็นความแปลกกัน อะไรเป็นความแตกต่างกัน อะไรเป็นความมุ่งหมายที่ต่างกัน ระหว่างธรรมเทศนาของพวกเรากับธรรมเทศนาของพระสมณโคดม หรืออนุศาสนีของพวกเรากับอนุศาสนีของพระสมณโคดม.
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุเหล่านั้นไม่ชื่นชม ไม่คัดค้านคำกล่าวของอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกเหล่านั้น ครั้นแล้วลุกจากอาสนะหลีกไป ด้วยตั้งใจว่า เราทั้งหลายจักทราบเนื้อความแห่งคำพูดนี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาค.
ภิกษุเหล่านั้น ครั้นเที่ยวบิณฑบาตในนครสาวัตถี เวลาภายหลังอาหาร กลับจากบิณฑบาตแล้ว ได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วจึงนั่งที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต ในเวลาเช้าวันนี้ ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายนุ่งแล้ว ถือบาตรและจีวรเข้าไปบิณฑบาตในนครสาวัตถี ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายได้มีความคิดว่า เวลานี้ยังเช้านัก ที่เราจะเข้าไปบิณฑบาตในนครสาวัตถี ทางที่ดี เราทั้งหลายควรเข้าไปยังอารามของพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกเถิด ลำดับนั้น ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายเข้าไปยังอารามของพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชก ได้ปราศรัยกับพวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชก ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้ว จึงนั่งในที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกได้กล่าวกับข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายว่า

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกผู้มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ เธอทั้งหลายควรถามอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโสทั้งหลาย สมัยใด จิตหดหู่ สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญโพชฌงค์เหล่าไหน แต่เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญโพชฌงค์เหล่าไหน สมัยใด จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญโพชฌงค์เหล่าไหน แต่เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญโพชฌงค์เหล่าไหน พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกถูกเธอทั้งหลายถามอย่างนี้แล้ว จักตอบไม่ได้เลย และจักถึงความอึดอัดอย่างยิ่ง ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะเป็นปัญหาที่ถามในฐานะ ไม่ใช่ในวิสัย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรายังไม่เล็งเห็นบุคคลในโลก พร้อมทั้งเทวโลก มารโลก พรหมโลก ในหมู่สัตว์ พร้อมทั้งสมณพราหมณ์ พร้อมทั้งเทวดาและมนุษย์ ที่จะทำจิตให้ยินดีด้วยการตอบปัญหาเหล่านี้ นอกจากตถาคต หรือสาวกของตถาคต หรือผู้ที่ฟังคำสอนจากตถาคต หรือฟังจากสาวกของตถาคต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมัยใดจิตหดหู่ สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญปัสสัทธิสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญสมาธิสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญอุเบกขาสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตหดหู่ จิตที่หดหู่นั้นยากที่จะทำให้ตั้งขึ้นได้ด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษต้องการจะก่อไฟดวงน้อยให้ลุกโพลงขึ้น เขาจึงใส่หญ้าสด โคมัยสด ไม้สด พ่นน้ำ และโรยฝุ่นลงในไฟนั้น บุรุษนั้นจะสามารถก่อไฟดวงน้อยนั้นให้ลุกโพลงขึ้นได้หรือไม่.
ไม่ได้เลย ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สมัยใด จิตหดหู่ สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญปัสสัทธิสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญสมาธิสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญอุเบกขาสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตหดหู่ จิตที่หดหู่นั้น ยากที่จะทำให้ตั้งขึ้นได้ด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมัยใด จิตหดหู่ สมัยนั้น เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญธัมมวิจยสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญวิริยสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญปีติสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตหดหู่ จิตที่หดหู่นั้นทำให้ตั้งขึ้นได้ง่ายด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษต้องการจะก่อไฟดวงน้อยให้ลุกโพลงขึ้น เขาจึงใส่หญ้าแห้ง โคมัยแห้ง ไม้แห้ง เอาปากเป่า และไม่โรยฝุ่นในไฟนั้น บุรุษนั้นสามารถจะก่อไฟดวงน้อยให้ลุกโพลงขึ้นได้หรือไม่.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สมัยใด จิตหดหู่ สมัยนั้น เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญธัมมวิจยสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญวิริยสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญปีติสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตหดหู่ จิตที่หดหู่นั้นทำให้ตั้งขึ้นได้ง่ายด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมัยใด จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญธัมมวิจยสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญวิริยสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญปีติสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตที่ฟุ้งซ่านนั้น ยากที่จะให้สงบได้ด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษต้องการจะดับไฟกองใหญ่ เขาจึงใส่หญ้าแห้ง โคมัยแห้ง ไม้แห้ง เอาปากเป่า และไม่โรยฝุ่นลงไปในกองไฟใหญ่นั้น บุรุษนั้นสามารถจะดับไฟกองใหญ่นั้นได้หรือไม่.
ไม่ได้เลย ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สมัยใด จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สมัยนั้น ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญธัมมวิจยสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญวิริยสัมโพชฌงค์ ไม่ใช่เวลาเพื่อเจริญปีติสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตที่ฟุ้งซ่านนั้น ยากที่จะให้สงบได้ด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมัยใด จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สมัยนั้น เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญปัสสัทธิสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญสมาธิสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญอุเบกขาสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตที่ฟุ้งซ่านนั้น ทำให้สงบได้ง่ายด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษต้องการจะดับไฟกองใหญ่ เขาจึงใส่หญ้าสด โคมัยสด ไม้สด พ่นน้ำ และโรยฝุ่นลงในกองไฟใหญ่นั้น บุรุษนั้นจะสามารถดับกองไฟกองใหญ่นั้นได้หรือไม่.
ได้ ภันเต.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สมัยใด จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สมัยนั้น เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญปัสสัทธิสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญสมาธิสัมโพชฌงค์ เป็นเวลาเพื่อเจริญอุเบกขาสัมโพชฌงค์ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตที่ฟุ้งซ่านนั้น ทำให้สงบได้ง่ายด้วยธรรมเหล่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวว่า สติมีประโยชน์ในที่ทั้งปวง.
