Suppose you say: ‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience the result as it should be experienced.’ This being so, the spiritual life can be lived, and there is a chance of making a complete end of suffering.
Take the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, let alone a lot.
What kind of person does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell? A person who hasn’t developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, or wisdom. They’re small-minded and mean-spirited, living in suffering. That kind of person does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell.
What kind of person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, let alone a lot? A person who has developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom. They’re not small-minded, but are big-hearted, living without limits. That kind of person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot.
Suppose a person was to drop a lump of salt into a small bowl of water. What do you think, mendicants? Would that small bowl of water become salty and undrinkable?”
“Yes, sir. Why is that? Because there is only a little water in the bowl.”
“Suppose a person was to drop a lump of salt into the Ganges river. What do you think, mendicants? Would the Ganges river become salty and undrinkable?”
“No, sir. Why is that? Because the Ganges river is a vast mass of water.”
“This is how it is in the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot. …

What kind of person isn’t thrown in jail for stealing half a dollar, a dollar, or a hundred dollars? A person who is rich, affluent, and wealthy. That kind of person isn’t thrown in jail for stealing half a dollar, a dollar, or a hundred dollars.
This is how it is in the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but they go to hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot. …
It’s like a sheep dealer or butcher. They can execute, jail, fine, or otherwise punish one person who steals from them, but not another.
What kind of person can they punish? A person who is poor, with few possessions and little wealth. That’s the kind of person they can punish.
What kind of person can’t they punish? A ruler or their minister who is rich, affluent, and wealthy. That’s the kind of person they can’t punish. In fact, all they can do is raise their joined palms and ask: ‘Please, good sir, give me my sheep or pay me for it.’

But for anyone who says, ‘When a person makes kamma to be felt in such & such a way, that is how its result is experienced,’ there is the living of the holy life, there is the opportunity for the right ending of stress.
“There is the case where a trifling evil deed done by a certain individual takes him to hell. There is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by another individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in [contemplating] the body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in [contemplating] the body, developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Suppose that a man were to drop a salt crystal into a small amount of water in a cup. What do you think? Would the water in the cup become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink?”
“Yes, lord. Why is that? There being only a small amount of water in the cup, it would become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink.”
“Now suppose that a man were to drop a salt crystal into the River Ganges. What do you think? Would the water in the River Ganges become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink?”
“No, lord. Why is that? There being a great mass of water in the River Ganges, it would not become salty because of the salt crystal or unfit to drink.”
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual [the first] takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil act done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in the body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind [i.e., painful feelings can invade the mind and stay there], undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil act done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil act done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in the body, developed in virtue, developed in mind [i.e., painful feelings cannot invade the mind and stay there], developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil act done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“There is the case where a certain person is thrown into jail for half a dollar (kahapana), is thrown into jail for a dollar, is thrown into jail for one hundred dollars. And there is the case where another person is not thrown into jail for half a dollar, is not thrown into jail for a dollar, is not thrown into jail for one hundred dollars. Now what sort of person is thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars? There is the case where a person is poor, of little wealth, of few possessions. This is the sort of person who is thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars. And what sort of person is not thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars? There is the case where a person is wealthy, with many belongings, many possessions. This is the sort of person who is not thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars.
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.

“It’s just as when a goat butcher is empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes a certain person who steals a goat, but is not empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes another person who steals a goat. Now, when what sort of person has stolen a goat is the goat butcher empowered to beat him or bind him or slay him or treat him as he likes? There is the case where a person is poor, of little wealth, of few possessions. This is the sort of person who, when he has stolen a goat, the goat butcher is empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes. And when what sort of person has stolen a goat is the goat butcher not empowered to beat him or bind him or slay him or treat him as he likes? There is the case where a person is wealthy, with many belongings, many possessions; a king or a king’s minister. This is the sort of person who, when he has stolen a goat, the goat butcher is not empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes. All he can do is go with his hands clasped before his heart and beg: ‘Please, dear sir, give me a goat or the price of a goat.’
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in [contemplating] the body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนผู้ใดพึงกล่าวอย่างนี้ว่า บุรุษทำกรรมอันจะพึงให้ผลอย่างใดๆ เขาย่อมได้รับผลของกรรมนั้นอย่างนั้นๆ ดังนี้ เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น การอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ก็ย่อมมีได้ โอกาสที่จะทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์โดยชอบก็ย่อมปรากฏ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อย บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมนำเขาไปสู่นรกได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนบุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม (ให้ผลในปัจจุบัน) ไม่ปรากฏผลแม้น้อยหรือมากอีกเลย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นใดทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อย บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมนำเขาไปสู่นรกได้ คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีกายไม่ได้อบรม มีศีลไม่ได้อบรม มีจิตไม่ได้อบรม มีปัญญาไม่ได้อบรม มีคุณความดีน้อย เป็นอัปปาตุมะ (ผู้มีใจคับแคบ) เป็นอัปปทุกขวิหารี (มีปกติอยู่เป็นทุกข์ด้วยเหตุผลเพียงเล็กน้อย) บุคคลเช่นนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อย บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมนำเขาไปสู่นรกได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นใดทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม ไม่ปรากฏผลแม้น้อยหรือมากอีกเลย คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีกายได้อบรมแล้ว มีศีลได้อบรมแล้ว มีจิตได้อบรมแล้ว มีปัญญาได้อบรมแล้ว มีคุณความดีมาก เป็นมหาตมะ (ผู้มีใจกว้างขวาง) เป็นอัปปมาณวิหารี (มีปกติอยู่ด้วยธรรมอันหาประมาณไม่ได้) บุคคลเช่นนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม ไม่ปรากฏผลน้อยหรือมากอีกเลย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษใส่เกลือก้อนหนึ่งลงไปในถ้วยน้ำเล็กๆ เธอทั้งหลายจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร น้ำในถ้วยเล็กๆ นั้นจะกลายเป็นน้ำเค็ม ไม่น่าดื่มเพราะเกลือก้อนนั้นใช่ไหม.
เป็นอย่างนั้น ภันเต.
ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร.
ภันเต เพราะเหตุว่า น้ำในถ้วยเล็กๆ นั้นมีน้อย มันจึงกลายเป็นน้ำเค็ม ไม่น่าดื่มเพราะเกลือก้อนนั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบหมือนบุรุษใส่เกลือก้อนขนาดเดียวกันนั้น ลงไปในแม่น้ำคงคา เธอทั้งหลายจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร น้ำในแม่น้ำคงคานั้นจะกลายเป็นน้ำเค็ม ไม่น่าดื่มเพราะเกลือก้อนนั้นหรือไม่.
ไม่เป็นอย่างนั้น ภันเต.
ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร.
ภันเต เพราะเหตุว่า น้ำในแม่น้ำคงคามีมาก น้ำนั้นจึงไม่กลายเป็นน้ำเค็ม ไม่น่าดื่ม เพราะเกลือก้อนนั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อย บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมนำเขาไปสู่นรกได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนบุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม (ให้ผลในปัจจุบัน) ไม่ปรากฏผลแม้น้อยหรือมากอีกเลย.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นใดย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียงครึ่งกหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑ กหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑๐๐ กหาปณะบ้าง คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นคนยากจน มีทรัพย์น้อย มีโภคะน้อย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นนี้แล ย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียงครึ่งกหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑ กหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑๐๐ กหาปณะบ้าง.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นใดย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียงครึ่งกหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑ กหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑๐๐ กหาปณะบ้าง คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นคนมั่งคั่ง มีทรัพย์มาก มีโภคะมาก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นนี้แล ย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียงครึ่งกหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑ กหาปณะบ้าง ย่อมไม่ผูกพันในทรัพย์แม้เพียง ๑๐๐ กหาปณะบ้าง.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนเจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะบางคน สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือทำตามประสงค์กับคนขโมยแกะบางคนได้ แต่ไม่สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือไม่สามารถทำตามประสงค์กับคนขโมยแกะบางคนได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนขโมยแกะเช่นใด ที่เจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะ สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือทำตามประสงค์ได้ คือ คนขโมยแกะบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นคนยากจน มีทรัพย์น้อย มีโภคะน้อย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนขโมยแกะเช่นนี้แล ที่เจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะ สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือทำตามประสงค์ได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนขโมยแกะเช่นใด ที่เจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะ ไม่สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือไม่สามารถทำตามประสงค์ได้ คือ คนขโมยแกะบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นคนมั่งคั่ง มีทรัพย์มาก มีโภคะมาก เป็นพระราชา หรือมหาอำมาตย์ของพระราชา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย คนขโมยแกะเช่นนี้แล ที่เจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะ ไม่สามารถที่จะฆ่า จองจำ ทำให้เสื่อมเสีย หรือไม่สามารถทำตามประสงค์ได้ โดยที่แท้ เจ้าของแกะหรือคนฆ่าแกะ มีแต่จะประนมมือขอกับเขาว่า ได้โปรด ขอท่านจงให้แกะ หรือทรัพย์ที่มีมูลค่าเท่ากับแกะแก่กระผมด้วยเถิด.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อย บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมนำเขาไปสู่นรกได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนบุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม (ให้ผลในปัจจุบัน) ไม่ปรากฏผลแม้น้อยหรือมากอีกเลย.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลเช่นใดทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม ไม่ปรากฏผลแม้น้อยหรือมากอีกเลย คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีกายได้อบรมแล้ว มีศีลได้อบรมแล้ว มีจิตได้อบรมแล้ว มีปัญญาได้อบรมแล้ว มีคุณความดีมาก เป็นมหาตมะ (ผู้มีใจกว้างขวาง) เป็นอัปปมาณวิหารี (มีปกติอยู่ด้วยธรรมอันหาประมาณไม่ได้) บุคคลเช่นนี้ ทำบาปกรรมแม้เพียงเล็กน้อยอย่างเดียวกันนั้น บาปกรรมนั้นย่อมเป็นทิฏฐธรรมเวทนียกรรม ไม่ปรากฏผลน้อยหรือมากอีกเลย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดพึงกล่าวอย่างนี้ว่า บุรุษทำกรรมไว้อย่างใดๆ เขาย่อมได้กรรมนั้นอย่างนั้นๆ ดังนี้ เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น การอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ก็มีไม่ได้ โอกาสที่จะทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์โดยชอบก็ย่อมไม่ปรากฏ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนผู้ใดพึงกล่าวอย่างนี้ว่า บุรุษทำกรรมอันจะพึงให้ผลอย่างใดๆ เขาย่อมได้รับผลของกรรมนั้นอย่างนั้น ๆ ดังนี้ เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น การอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ก็ย่อมมีได้ โอกาสที่จะทำที่สุดแห่งทุกข์โดยชอบก็ย่อมปรากฏ.
