Coarse corruptions, middling corruptions, and fine corruptions in mind.

“Gold has coarse corruptions: sand, soil, and gravel. A panner or their apprentice pours it into a pan, where they wash, rinse, and clean it. When that’s been eliminated, there are medium corruptions in the gold: fine grit and coarse sand. The panner washes it again. When that’s been eliminated, there are fine corruptions in the gold: fine sand and black grime. The panner washes it again. When that’s been eliminated, only gold dust is left. A goldsmith or their apprentice places the gold in a crucible where they blow, melt, and smelt it. Still the gold is not settled and the dross is not totally gone. It’s not pliable, workable, or radiant, but is brittle and not completely ready for working. But the goldsmith keeps on blowing, melting, and smelting it. The gold becomes pliable, workable, and radiant, not brittle, and ready to be worked. Then the goldsmith can successfully create any kind of ornament they want, whether a bracelet, earrings, a necklace, or a golden garland.
In the same way, a mendicant who is committed to the higher mind has coarse corruptions: bad bodily, verbal, and mental conduct. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.
When they’ve been given up and eliminated, there are middling corruptions: sensual, malicious, or cruel thoughts. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.
When they’ve been given up and eliminated, there are fine corruptions: thoughts of family, country, and being looked up to. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.
When they’ve been given up and eliminated, only thoughts about the teaching are left. That immersion is not peaceful or sublime or tranquil or unified, but is held in place by forceful suppression.
But there comes a time when that mind is stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. That immersion is peaceful and sublime and tranquil and unified, not held in place by forceful suppression. They become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with my hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling my body as far as the Brahmā realm.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘With clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, may I hear both kinds of sounds, human and divine, whether near or far.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘May I understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with my mind. May I understand mind with greed as “mind with greed”, and mind without greed as “mind without greed”; mind with hate as “mind with hate”, and mind without hate as “mind without hate”; mind with delusion as “mind with delusion”, and mind without delusion as “mind without delusion”; constricted mind as “constricted mind”, and scattered mind as “scattered mind”; expansive mind as “expansive mind”, and unexpansive mind as “unexpansive mind”; mind that is not supreme as “mind that is not supreme”, and mind that is supreme as “mind that is supreme”; mind immersed in samādhi as “mind immersed in samādhi”, and mind not immersed in samādhi as “mind not immersed in samādhi”; freed mind as “freed mind”, and unfreed mind as “unfreed mind”.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘May I recollect many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. May I remember: “There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.” May I recollect my many past lives, with features and details.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘With clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, may I see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place—and understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds: “These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They spoke ill of the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they acted out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never spoke ill of the noble ones; they had right view; and they acted out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.” And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, may I see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. And may I understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
If they wish: ‘May I realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.”

“Monks, for anyone who says, ‘In whatever way a person makes kamma, that is how it is experienced,’ there is no living of the holy life, there is no opportunity for the right ending of stress. But for anyone who says, ‘When a person makes kamma to be felt in such & such a way, that is how its result is experienced,’ there is the living of the holy life, there is the opportunity for the right ending of stress.
“There is the case where a trifling evil deed done by a certain individual takes him to hell. There is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by another individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in body, developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Suppose that a man were to drop a salt crystal into a small amount of water in a cup. What do you think? Would the water in the cup become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink?”
“Yes, lord. Why is that? There being only a small amount of water in the cup, it would become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink.”
“Now suppose that a man were to drop a salt crystal into the River Ganges. What do you think? Would the water in the River Ganges become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink?”
“No, lord. Why is that? There being a great mass of water in the River Ganges, it would not become salty because of the salt crystal or unfit to drink.”
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual (the first) takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in body, developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“There is the case where a certain person is thrown into jail for half a dollar [kahāpaṇa], is thrown into jail for a dollar, is thrown into jail for one hundred dollars. And there is the case where another person is not thrown into jail for half a dollar, is not thrown into jail for a dollar, is not thrown into jail for one hundred dollars. Now what sort of person is thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars? There is the case where a person is poor, of little wealth, of few possessions. This is the sort of person who is thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars. And what sort of person is not thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars? There is the case where a person is wealthy, with many belongings, many possessions. This is the sort of person who is not thrown into jail for half a dollar… for a dollar… for one hundred dollars.
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in body, developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“It’s just as when a goat butcher is empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes a certain person who steals a goat, but is not empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes another person who steals a goat. Now, when what sort of person has stolen a goat is the goat butcher empowered to beat him or bind him or slay him or treat him as he likes? There is the case where a person is poor, of little wealth, of few possessions. This is the sort of person who, when he has stolen a goat, the goat butcher is empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes. And when what sort of person has stolen a goat is the goat butcher not empowered to beat him or bind him or slay him or treat him as he likes? There is the case where a person is wealthy, with many belongings, many possessions; a king or a king’s minister. This is the sort of person who, when he has stolen a goat, the goat butcher is not empowered to beat or bind or slay or treat as he likes. All he can do is go with his hands clasped before his heart and beg: ‘Please, dear sir, give me a goat or the price of a goat.’
“In the same way, there is the case where a trifling evil deed done by one individual takes him to hell; and there is the case where the very same sort of trifling deed done by the other individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual takes him to hell? There is the case where a certain individual is undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, undeveloped in discernment: restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual takes him to hell.
“Now, a trifling evil deed done by what sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment? There is the case where a certain individual is developed in body, developed in virtue, developed in mind, developed in discernment: unrestricted, large-hearted, dwelling with the immeasurable. A trifling evil deed done by this sort of individual is experienced in the here & now, and for the most part barely appears for a moment.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างหยาบ (โอฬาริก อุปกฺกิเลส) ของทอง คือ ดินร่วน ทราย ก้อนกรวด และกระเบื้องมีอยู่ คนล้างฝุ่นหรือลูกมือของเขา เกลี่ยทองนั้นเทลงไปในรางน้ำแล้วล้างซ้ำๆ ล้างอีกจนหมด เมื่อล้างเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างหยาบจนหมดไป สิ้นไปแล้ว ทองยังคงมีเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างกลาง คือ ก้อนกรวดอย่างละเอียด ทรายอย่างหยาบ คนล้างฝุ่นหรือลูกมือของเขาย่อมล้างทองนั้นซ้ำๆ ล้างอีกจนหมด เมื่อล้างเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างกลางจนหมดไป สิ้นไปแล้ว ทองยังคงมีเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างละเอียด คือ ทรายอย่างละเอียด และสะเก็ดกระลำพัก คนล้างฝุ่นหรือลูกมือของเขาย่อมล้างทองนั้นซ้ำๆ ล้างอีกจนหมด เมื่อล้างเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างละเอียดจนหมดไป สิ้นไปแล้ว คราวนี้ยังคงเหลือผงทอง ช่างทองหรือลูกมือของเขา ใส่ทองลงในเบ้าหลอมแล้วสูบลมซ้ำๆ สูบจนได้ที่ (แต่ทอง) ยังไม่เป็นเนื้อเดียวกัน ยังไม่หายกระด้าง ยังมีเนื้อไม่อ่อน ไม่ควรแก่การงาน (ของช่างทอง) ไม่ผุดผ่อง ยังมีเนื้อร่วน และไม่เหมาะแก่การกระทำ (ของช่างทอง).
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มีอยู่ ในสมัยที่ช่างทองหรือลูกมือของเขาสูบลมซ้ำๆ สูบจนได้ที่ (ทอง) ย่อมเป็นเนื้อเดียวกัน หายกระด้าง มีเนื้ออ่อน ควรแก่การงาน (ของช่างทอง) มีความผุดผ่อง เนื้อไม่ร่วน และเหมาะแก่การกระทำของช่างทอง เขาปรารถนาจะทำเครื่องประดับชนิดใดๆ คือ แผ่นทอง (แหวน ?) ตุ้มหู สร้อยคอ หรือสุวรรณามาลาก็ตาม ก็ย่อมสำเร็จตามความประสงค์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ภิกษุผู้ประกอบอธิจิตเนืองๆ ยังคงมีเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างหยาบอยู่ (โอฬาริก อุปกฺกิเลส) คือ กายทุจริต วจีทุจริต มโนทุจริต ภิกษุผู้มีสัญชาติเป็นคนฉลาด ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา เครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างหยาบแห่งใจของตนนั้นเสีย ทำให้สิ้นไป ทำให้ไม่มีเหลือ เมื่อละเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างอยาบได้เด็ดขาดแล้ว ทำให้สิ้นไปได้แล้ว ภิกษุผู้ประกอบอธิจิตเนืองๆ ยังคงมีเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างกลางอยู่ (มชฺฌิมสหคต อุปกฺกิเลส) คือ กามวิตก พยาบาทวิตก วิหิงสาวิตก ภิกษุผู้มีสัญชาติเป็นคนฉลาด ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา เครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างกลางแห่งใจของตนนั้นเสีย ทำให้สิ้นไป ทำให้ไม่มีเหลือ เมื่อละเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างกลางได้เด็ดขาดแล้ว ทำให้สิ้นไปได้แล้ว ภิกษุผู้ประกอบอธิจิตเนืองๆ ยังคงมีเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างละเอียดอยู่ (สุขุมสหคต อุปกฺกิเลส) คือ ความวิตกถึงชาติกำเนิด ความวิตกถึงชนบท และวิตกอันเกี่ยวด้วยการจะไม่ให้ผู้อื่นดูหมิ่น ภิกษุผู้มีสัญชาติเป็นคนฉลาด ย่อมละ ย่อมบรรเทา เครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างละเอียดแห่งใจของตนนั้นเสีย ทำให้สิ้นไป ทำให้ไม่มีเหลือ เมื่อละเครื่องเศร้าหมองอย่างละเอียดได้เด็ดขาดแล้ว ทำให้สิ้นไปได้แล้ว ก็ยังคงมีธรรมวิตกเหลืออยู่ นั่นเป็นสมาธิที่ยังไม่สงบ ยังไม่ประณีต ยังไม่ถึงความสงบระงับ ยังไม่ถึงความเป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ต้องใช้ความเพียรข่มห้ามไว้ด้วยธรรมเครื่องปรุงแต่ง.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มีอยู่ ในสมัยที่จิตตั้งอยู่ด้วยดี สงบระงับอยู่ด้วยดีในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น เป็นสมาธิอยู่ สมัยนั้น นั่นเป็นสมาธิอันสงบ ประณีต ถึงความสงบระงับ ถึงความเป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่ต้องใช้ความเพียรข่มห้ามไว้ด้วยธรรมเครื่องปรุงแต่ง และภิกษุนั้นจะโน้มน้อมจิตไป เพื่อทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ซึ่งธรรมที่ควรทำให้แจ้งด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองใดๆ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ถ้าภิกษุนั้นหวังว่า เราพึงบรรลุอิทธิวิธีหลายประการ คือ คนเดียวแสดงเป็นหลายคนก็ได้ หลายคนแสดงเป็นคนเดียวก็ได้ ทำให้ปรากฏก็ได้ ทำให้หายไปก็ได้ ทะลุฝา ทะลุกำแพง ทะลุภูเขาไปได้ไม่ติดขัด เหมือนไปในที่ว่างก็ได้ ผุดขึ้นหรือดำลงในแผ่นดินเหมือนไปในน้ำก็ได้ เดินบนน้ำไม่แยกเหมือนเดินบนแผ่นดินก็ได้ เหาะไปในอากาศเหมือนนกก็ได้ ลูบคลำพระจันทร์ พระอาทิตย์ ซึ่งมีฤทธิ์ มีอานุภาพมากด้วยฝ่ามือก็ได้ ใช้อำนาจทางกายไปตลอดพรหมโลกก็ได้ ดังนี้ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ถ้าภิกษุนั้นหวังว่า เราพึงได้ยินเสียงทั้ง ๒ ชนิด คือ เสียงทิพย์และเสียงมนุษย์ ทั้งที่อยู่ในที่ไกลและในที่ใกล้ ด้วยทิพยโสตอันบริสุทธิ์ ล่วงโสตของมนุษย์ ดังนี้ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ถ้าภิกษุนั้นหวังว่า เราพึงกำหนดรู้ใจของสัตว์อื่น ของบุคคลอื่นด้วยใจ คือ จิตมีราคะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีราคะ หรือจิตปราศจากราคะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากราคะ จิตมีโทสะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีโทสะ หรือจิตปราศจากโทสะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากโทสะ จิตมีโมหะก็รู้ว่าจิตมีโมหะ หรือจิตปราศจากโมหะก็รู้ว่าจิตปราศจากโมหะ จิตหดหู่ก็รู้ว่าจิตหดหู่ หรือจิตฟุ้งซ่านก็รู้ว่าจิตฟุ้งซ่าน จิตเป็นมหัคคตะ (ถึงความเป็นใหญ่) ก็รู้ว่าจิตเป็นมหัคคตะ หรือจิตไม่เป็นมหัคคตะก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่เป็นมหัคคตะ จิตมีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่าก็รู้ว่าจิตมีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่า หรือจิตไม่มีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่าก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่มีจิตอื่นยิ่งกว่า จิตเป็นสมาธิก็รู้ว่าจิตเป็นสมาธิ หรือจิตไม่เป็นสมาธิก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่เป็นสมาธิ จิตหลุดพ้นก็รู้ว่าจิตหลุดพ้น หรือจิตไม่หลุดพ้นก็รู้ว่าจิตไม่หลุดพ้น ดังนี้ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
ถ้าภิกษุนั้นหวังว่า เราพึงระลึกชาติก่อนได้เป็นอันมาก คือ พึงระลึกได้ชาติหนึ่งบ้าง สองชาติบ้าง สามชาติบ้าง สี่ชาติบ้าง ห้าชาติบ้าง สิบชาติบ้าง ยี่สิบชาติบ้าง สามสิบชาติบ้าง สี่สิบชาติบ้าง ห้าสิบชาติบ้าง ร้อยชาติบ้าง พันชาติบ้าง แสนชาติบ้าง ตลอดสังวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้าง ตลอดวิวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้าง ตลอดสังวัฏกัปและวิวัฏกัปเป็นอันมากบ้างว่า ในภพโน้นเรามีชื่ออย่างนั้น มีโคตรอย่างนั้น มีผิวพรรณอย่างนั้น มีอาหารอย่างนั้น เสวยสุขและเสวยทุกข์อย่างนั้นๆ มีกำหนดอายุเพียงเท่านั้น ครั้นจุติจากภพนั้นแล้วได้ไปเกิดในภพโน้น แม้ในภพนั้น เราก็ได้มีชื่ออย่างนั้น มีโคตรอย่างนั้น มีผิวพรรณอย่างนั้น มีอาหารอย่างนั้น เสวยสุขและเสวยทุกข์อย่างนั้นๆ มีกำหนดอายุเพียงเท่านั้น ครั้นจุติจากภพนั้นแล้ว ได้มาเกิดในภพนี้ เราพึงระลึกถึงชาติก่อนได้เป็นอันมาก พร้อมทั้งอาการพร้อมทั้งอุเทศ ด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ดังนี้ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.

ถ้าภิกษุนั้นหวังว่า เราพึงทำให้แจ้งซึ่งเจโตวิมุตติ ปัญญาวิมุตติ อันหาอาสวะมิได้ เพราะความสิ้นไปแห่งอาสวะทั้งหลาย ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบันเข้าถึงอยู่ ดังนี้ ในธรรมนั้นๆ เธอก็จักถึงความสามารถทำได้จนเป็นสักขีพยาน ในขณะที่อายตนะยังมีอยู่.
