The arising and ceasing of suffering (3)

At Sāvatthī.
“Mendicants, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is an inclination. When there is an inclination, there is coming and going. When there is coming and going, there is passing away and reappearing. When there is passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established and grows, there is an inclination. When there is an inclination, there is coming and going. When there is coming and going, there is passing away and reappearing. When there is passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death come to be, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan or have underlying tendencies, this doesn’t become a support for the continuation of consciousness. With no support, consciousness is not established. When consciousness is not established and doesn’t grow, there’s no inclination. When there’s no inclination, there’s no coming and going. When there’s no coming and going, there’s no passing away and reappearing. When there’s no passing away and reappearing, future rebirth, old age, and death cease, as do sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

At Savatthī. “Bhikkhus, what one intends, and what one plans, and whatever one has a tendency towards: this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis, there is a support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is established and has come to growth, there is inclination. When there is inclination, there is coming and going. When there is coming and going, there is passing away and being reborn. When there is passing away and being reborn, future birth, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“If, bhikkhus, one does not intend, and one does not plan, but one still has a tendency towards something, this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis, there is a support for the establishing of consciousness…. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“But, bhikkhus, when one does not intend, and one does not plan, and one does not have a tendency towards anything, no basis exists for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is no basis, there is no support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is unestablished and does not come to growth, there is no inclination. When there is no inclination, there is no coming and going. When there is no coming and going, there is no passing away and being reborn. When there is no passing away and being reborn, future birth, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair cease. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลคิดถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ ดำริถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ และมีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ ความตั้งขึ้นแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้น ตั้งขึ้นแล้ว เจริญงอกงามแล้ว เครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่ย่อมมี เมื่อเครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่มี การมาการไปย่อมมี เมื่อการมาการไปมี การเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดย่อมมี เมื่อการเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดมี ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลาย จึงเกิดขึ้นครบถ้วนต่อไป ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใด ไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใด แต่เขายังมีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ ความตั้งขึ้นแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้น ตั้งขึ้นแล้ว เจริญงอกงามแล้ว เครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่ย่อมมี เมื่อเครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่มี การมาการไปย่อมมี เมื่อการมาการไปมี การเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดย่อมมี เมื่อการเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดมี ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกะปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายจึงเกิดขึ้นครบถ้วนต่อไป ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในกาลใด ถ้าบุคคลไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใด ไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใด และไม่มีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใด ในกาลนั้น สิ่งนั้นย่อมไม่เป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์ไม่มี ความตั้งขึ้นแห่งวิญญาณย่อมไม่มี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้น ไม่ตั้งขึ้นแล้ว ไม่เจริญงอกงามแล้ว เครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่ย่อมไม่มี เมื่อเครื่องนำไปสู่ภพใหม่ไม่มี การมาการไปย่อมไม่มี เมื่อการมาการไปไม่มี การเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดย่อมไม่มี เมื่อการเคลื่อนและการบังเกิดไม่มี ชาติ ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลายต่อไป จึงดับสิ้น ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้ ดังนี้.
