The Buddha praised growth in skillful qualities.

“Mendicants, I don’t praise stagnation in skillful qualities, let alone decline. I praise growth in skillful qualities, not stagnation or decline.
And how is there decline in skillful qualities, not stagnation or growth? It’s when a mendicant has a certain degree of faith, ethics, generosity, wisdom, and eloquence. Those qualities neither stagnate nor grow in them. I call this decline in skillful qualities, not stagnation or growth. This is how there’s decline in skillful qualities, not stagnation or growth.
And how is there stagnation in skillful qualities, not decline or growth? It’s when a mendicant has a certain degree of faith, ethics, generosity, wisdom, and eloquence. Those qualities neither decline nor grow in them. I call this stagnation in skillful qualities, not decline or growth. This is how there’s stagnation in skillful qualities, not decline or growth.
And how is there growth in skillful qualities, not stagnation or decline? It’s when a mendicant has a certain degree of faith, ethics, generosity, wisdom, and eloquence. Those qualities neither stagnate nor decline in them. I call this growth in skillful qualities, not stagnation or decline. This is how there’s growth in skillful qualities, not stagnation or decline.
If a mendicant isn’t skilled in the ways of another’s mind, then they should train themselves: ‘I will be skilled in the ways of my own mind.’
And how is a mendicant skilled in the ways of their own mind? Suppose there was a woman or man who was young, youthful, and fond of adornments, and they check their own reflection in a clean bright mirror or a clear bowl of water. If they see any dirt or blemish there, they’d try to remove it. But if they don’t see any dirt or blemish there, they’re happy with that, as they’ve got all they wished for: ‘How fortunate that I’m clean!’ In the same way, checking is very helpful for a mendicant’s skillful qualities. ‘Am I often covetous or not? Am I often malicious or not? Am I often overcome with dullness and drowsiness or not? Am I often restless or not? Am I often doubtful or not? Am I often irritable or not? Am I often defiled in mind or not? Am I often disturbed in body or not? Am I often energetic or not? Am I often immersed in samādhi or not?’
Suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows this: ‘I am often covetous, malicious, overcome with dullness and drowsiness, restless, doubtful, irritable, defiled in mind, disturbed in body, lazy, and not immersed in samādhi.’ In order to give up those bad, unskillful qualities, they should apply outstanding enthusiasm, effort, zeal, vigor, perseverance, mindfulness, and situational awareness. Suppose your clothes or head were on fire. In order to extinguish it, you’d apply outstanding enthusiasm, effort, zeal, vigor, perseverance, mindfulness, and situational awareness. In the same way, in order to give up those bad, unskillful qualities, that mendicant should apply outstanding enthusiasm …
But suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows this: ‘I am often content, kind-hearted, rid of dullness and drowsiness, calm, confident, loving, pure in mind, undisturbed in body, energetic, and immersed in samādhi.’ Grounded on those skillful qualities, they should practice meditation further to end the defilements.”

Those qualities of his do not remain the same or increase. This, I say, is deterioration rather than a standstill or growth in wholesome qualities. Thus there is deterioration—not a standstill or growth—in wholesome qualities.
“And how is there a standstill—not deterioration or growth—in wholesome qualities? Here, a bhikkhu has a certain degree of faith, virtuous behavior, learning, renunciation, wisdom, and discernment. Those qualities of his do not deteriorate or increase. This, I say, is a standstill rather than deterioration or growth in wholesome qualities. Thus there is a standstill—not deterioration or growth—in wholesome qualities.
“And how is there growth—not a stand still or deterioration—in wholesome qualities? Here, a bhikkhu has a certain degree of faith, virtuous behavior, learning, renunciation, wisdom, and discernment. Those qualities of his do not remain the same or deteriorate. This, I say, is growth rather than a standstill or deterioration in wholesome qualities. Thus there is growth—not a standstill or deterioration—in wholesome qualities.
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who is not skilled in the ways of others’ minds should train: ‘I will be skilled in the ways of my own mind.’ It is in this way that you should train yourselves.
“And how is a bhikkhu skilled in the ways of his own mind? It is just as if a woman or a man—young, youthful, and fond of ornaments—would look at her or his own facial reflection in a clean bright mirror or in a bowl of clear water. If they see any dust or blemish there, they will make an effort to remove it. But if they do not see any dust or blemish there, they will be glad about it; and their wish fulfilled, they will think, ‘How fortunate that I’m clean!’ So too, self-examination is very helpful for a bhikkhu to grow in wholesome qualities.
“One should ask oneself: (1) ‘Am I often given to longing or without longing? (2) Am I often given to ill will or without ill will? (3) Am I often overcome by dullness and drowsiness or free from dullness and drowsiness? (4) Am I often restless or calm? (5) Am I often plagued by doubt or free from doubt? (6) Am I often angry or without anger? (7) Is my mind often defiled or undefiled? (8) Is my body often agitated or unagitated? (9) Am I often lazy or energetic? (10) Am I often unconcentrated or concentrated?’
“If, by such self-examination, a bhikkhu knows: ‘I am often given to longing, given to ill will, overcome by dullness and drowsiness, restless, plagued by doubt, angry, defiled in mind, agitated in body, lazy, and unconcentrated,’ he should put forth extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, enthusiasm, indefatigability, mindfulness, and clear comprehension to abandon those same bad unwholesome qualities. Just as one whose clothes or head had caught fire would put forth extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, enthusiasm, indefatigability, mindfulness, and clear comprehension to extinguish the fire on his clothes or head, so too that bhikkhu should put forth extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, enthusiasm, indefatigability, mindfulness, and clear comprehension to abandon those same bad unwholesome qualities.
But if, by such self-examination, a bhikkhu knows: ‘I am often without longing, without ill will, free from dullness and drowsiness, calm, free from doubt, without anger, undefiled in mind, unagitated in body, energetic, and concentrated,’ then he should base himself on those same wholesome qualities and make a further effort to reach the destruction of the taints.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราไม่สรรเสริญซึ่งความคงที่ในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เหตุใดจะสรรเสริญความเสื่อมไปในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลายเล่า ภิกษุทั้งหลาย แต่เราสรรเสริญความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ หรือไม่ใช่ความเสื่อมในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเสื่อมในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเจริญเป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา ศีล สุตะ จาคะ ปัญญา และปฏิภาณอยู่เท่าใด ธรรมเหล่านั้นของภิกษุนั้นย่อมไม่ตั้งอยู่ และไม่เจริญขึ้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวข้อนี้ว่า เป็นความเสื่อมในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเจริญ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเสื่อมในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเจริญ เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความคงที่ในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม ไม่ใช่ความเจริญ เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา ศีล สุตะ จาคะ ปัญญา และปฏิภาณเท่าใด ธรรมเหล่านั้นของภิกษุนั้นย่อมไม่เสื่อม และย่อมไม่เจริญขึ้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวข้อนี้ว่า เป็นความคงที่ในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม ไม่ใช่ความเจริญ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความคงที่ในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม ไม่ใช่ความเจริญ เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีศรัทธา ศีล สุตะ จาคะ ปัญญา และปฏิภาณเท่าใด ธรรมเหล่านั้นของภิกษุนั้นย่อมไม่ตั้งอยู่ และย่อมไม่เสื่อม ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวข้อนี้ว่า เป็นความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่ใช่ความคงที่ ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อม เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย หากว่าภิกษุไม่เป็นผู้ฉลาดในวาระจิตของผู้อื่น เมื่อเป็นอย่างนั้น ภิกษุนั้น พึงศึกษาอย่างนี้ว่า เราจักเป็นผู้ฉลาดในวาระจิตของตน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ภิกษุเป็นผู้ฉลาดในวาระจิตของตนเป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนสตรีหรือบุรุษที่เป็นชายหนุ่มหรือเป็นหญิงสาว มีปกติชอบแต่งตัว ส่องดูเงาหน้าของตนในกระจกอันสะอาดหมดจด หรือในภาชนะน้ำอันใส ถ้าเห็นธุลีหรือจุดดำที่หน้านั้น ก็พยายามเพื่อขจัดธุลี หรือจุดดำนั้นเสีย ถ้าว่าไม่เห็นธุลีหรือจุดดำที่หน้านั้น ก็ย่อมดีใจ มีความดำริอันบริบูรณ์ด้วยเหตุนั้นว่า เป็นลาภของเราหนอ หน้าของเราบริสุทธิ์แล้วหนอ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน การพิจารณาของภิกษุว่า เราเป็นผู้มีอภิชฌาอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้ไม่มีอภิชฌาอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตพยาบาทอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่พยาบาทอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีถีนมิทธะกลุ้มรุมอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้ปราศจากถีนมิทธะอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตฟุ้งซ่านอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่ฟุ้งซ่านอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีความสงสัยอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้ข้ามพ้นความสงสัยอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มักโกรธอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้ไม่มักโกรธอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตเศร้าหมองอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่เศร้าหมองอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีกายกระสับกระส่ายอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้มีกายไม่กระสับกระส่ายอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้เกียจคร้านอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียรอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่นอยู่โดยมาก หรือว่าเราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่นอยู่โดยมาก ดังนี้ ย่อมเป็นอุปการะมากในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าภิกษุเมื่อพิจารณาอยู่รู้อย่างนี้ว่า เราเป็นผู้มีอภิชฌาอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตพยาบาทอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีถีนมิทธะกลุ้มรุมอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตฟุ้งซ่านอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีความสงสัยอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มักโกรธอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตเศร้าหมองอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีกายกระสับกระส่ายอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้เกียจคร้านอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่ตั้งมั่นอยู่โดยมาก ดังนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงกระทำความพอใจ ความพยายาม ความอุตสาหะ ความขะมักเขม้น ความไม่ท้อถอย สติและสัมปชัญญะอย่างแรงกล้า เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมอันเป็นบาปทั้งหลายเหล่านั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนบุคคลมีไฟไหม้ที่เสื้อผ้าหรือที่ศีรษะ เขาพึงกระทำความพอใจ ความพยายาม ความอุตสาหะ ความขะมักเขม้น ความไม่ท้อถอย สติและสัมปชัญญะอย่างแรงกล้า เพื่อดับไฟที่ไหม้เสื้อผ้าหรือไหม้ศีรษะนั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ภิกษุนั้น พึงกระทำความพอใจ ความพยายาม ความอุตสาหะ ความขะมักเขม้น ความไม่ท้อถอย สติและสัมปชัญญะอย่างแรงกล้า เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมอันเป็นบาปทั้งหลายเหล่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าภิกษุเมื่อพิจารณาอยู่รู้อย่างนี้ว่า เราเป็นผู้ไม่มีอภิชฌาอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่พยาบาทอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้ปราศจากถีนมิทธะอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่ฟุ้งซ่านอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้ข้ามพ้นความสงสัยอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้ไม่มักโกรธอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตไม่เศร้าหมองอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีกายไม่กระสับกระส่ายอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้ปรารภความเพียรอยู่โดยมาก เราเป็นผู้มีจิตตั้งมั่นอยู่โดยมาก ดังนี้ ภิกษุนั้นพึงตั้งอยู่ในกุศลธรรมเหล่านั้น แล้วพึงทำความเพียรให้ยิ่งขึ้นไป เพื่อความสิ้นไปแห่งอาสวะทั้งหลาย.
