Unfruitful striving and exertion

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near the Sakyan town named Devadaha. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants!”
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“Mendicants, there are some ascetics and brahmins who have this doctrine and view: ‘Everything this individual experiences—pleasurable, painful, or neutral—is because of past deeds. So, due to eliminating past deeds by mortification, and not doing any new deeds, there’s nothing to come up in the future. With nothing to come up in the future, deeds end. With the ending of deeds, suffering ends. With the ending of suffering, feeling ends. And with the ending of feeling, all suffering will have been worn away.’ Such is the doctrine of the Jain ascetics.
I’ve gone up to the Jain ascetics who say this and said, ‘Is it really true that this is the venerables’ view?’ They admitted that it is.
I said to them, ‘But reverends, do you know for sure that you existed in the past, and it is not the case that you didn’t exist?’
‘No we don’t, reverend.’
‘But reverends, do you know for sure that you did bad deeds in the past?’
‘No we don’t, reverend.’
‘But reverends, do you know that you did such and such bad deeds?’
‘No we don’t, reverend.’
‘But reverends, do you know that so much suffering has already been worn away? Or that so much suffering still remains to be worn away? Or that when so much suffering is worn away all suffering will have been worn away?’
‘No we don’t, reverend.’
‘But reverends, do you know about giving up unskillful qualities in the present life and embracing skillful qualities?’
‘No we don’t, reverend.’
‘So it seems that you don’t know any of these things. In that case, it’s not appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare this.
Now, supposing you did know these things. In that case, it would be appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare this.
Suppose a man was struck by an arrow thickly smeared with poison, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. Their friends and colleagues, relatives and kin would get a field surgeon to treat them. The surgeon would cut open the wound with a scalpel, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. They’d probe for the arrow, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. They’d extract the arrow, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. They’d apply cauterizing medicine to the wound, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. After some time that wound would be healed and the skin regrown. They’d be healthy, happy, autonomous, master of themselves, able to go where they wanted.
They’d think, “Earlier I was struck by an arrow thickly smeared with poison, causing painful feelings, sharp and severe. My friends and colleagues, relatives and kin got a field surgeon to treat me. At each step, the treatment was painful. But these days that wound is healed and the skin regrown. I’m healthy, happy, autonomous, my own master, able to go where I want.”
In the same way, reverends, if you knew about these things, it would be appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare this.
But since you don’t know any of these things, it’s not appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare this.’
When I said this, those Jain ascetics said to me, ‘Reverend, the Jain leader Nāṭaputta claims to be all-knowing and all-seeing, to know and see everything without exception, thus: “Knowledge and vision are constantly and continually present to me, while walking, standing, sleeping, and waking.”
He says: “O reverend Jain ascetics, you have done bad deeds in a past life. Wear them away with these severe and grueling austerities. And when you refrain from such deeds in the present by way of body, speech, and mind, you’re not doing any bad deeds for the future. So, due to eliminating past deeds by mortification, and not doing any new deeds, there’s nothing to come up in the future. With nothing to come up in the future, deeds end. With the ending of deeds, suffering ends. With the ending of suffering, feeling ends. And with the ending of feeling, all suffering will have been worn away.” We like and accept this, and we are satisfied with it.’
When they said this, I said to them, ‘These five things can be seen to turn out in two different ways. What five? Faith, preference, oral tradition, reasoned contemplation, and acceptance of a view after consideration. These are the five things that can be seen to turn out in two different ways. In this case, what faith in your teacher do you have when it comes to the past? What preference, oral tradition, reasoned contemplation, or acceptance of a view after consideration?’ When I said this, I did not see any legitimate defense of their doctrine from the Jains.
Furthermore, I said to those Jain ascetics, ‘What do you think, reverends? At a time of intense exertion and striving do you suffer painful, sharp, severe, acute feelings due to overexertion? Whereas at a time without intense exertion and striving do you not suffer painful, sharp, severe, acute feelings due to overexertion?’
‘Reverend Gotama, at a time of intense exertion we suffer painful, sharp feelings due to overexertion, not without intense exertion.’
‘So it seems that only at a time of intense exertion do you suffer painful, sharp feelings due to overexertion, not without intense exertion. In that case, it’s not appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare: “Everything this individual experiences—pleasurable, painful, or neutral—is because of past deeds. …”
If at a time of intense exertion you did not suffer painful, sharp feelings due to overexertion, and if without intense exertion you did experience such feelings, it would be appropriate for the Jain venerables to declare this.
But since this is not the case, aren’t you experiencing painful, sharp feelings due only to your own exertion, which out of ignorance, unknowing, and confusion you misconstrue to imply: “Everything this individual experiences—pleasurable, painful, or neutral—is because of past deeds. …”?’ When I said this, I did not see any legitimate defense of their doctrine from the Jains.
Furthermore, I said to those Jain ascetics, ‘What do you think, reverends? If a deed is to be experienced in this life, can exertion make it be experienced in lives to come?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘But if a deed is to be experienced in lives to come, can exertion make it be experienced in this life?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘What do you think, reverends? If a deed is to be experienced as pleasure, can exertion make it be experienced as pain?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘But if a deed is to be experienced as pain, can exertion make it be experienced as pleasure?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘What do you think, reverends? If a deed is to be experienced when fully ripened, can exertion make it be experienced when not fully ripened?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘But if a deed is to be experienced when not fully ripened, can exertion make it be experienced when fully ripened?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘What do you think, reverends? If a deed is to be experienced strongly, can exertion make it be experienced weakly?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘But if a deed is to be experienced weakly, can exertion make it be experienced strongly?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘What do you think, reverends? If a deed is to be experienced, can exertion make it not be experienced?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘But if a deed is not to be experienced, can exertion make it be experienced?’
‘No, reverend.’
‘So it seems that exertion cannot change the way deeds are experienced in any of these ways. This being so, your exertion and striving are fruitless.’
Such is the doctrine of the Jain ascetics. Saying this, the Jain ascetics deserve rebuke and criticism on ten legitimate grounds.
If sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of past deeds, clearly the Jains have done bad deeds in the past, since they now experience such intense pain. If sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of the Lord God’s creation, clearly the Jains were created by a bad God, since they now experience such intense pain. If sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of circumstance and nature, clearly the Jains arise from bad circumstances, since they now experience such intense pain. If sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of the class of rebirth, clearly the Jains have been reborn in a bad class, since they now experience such intense pain. If sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of exertion in the present, clearly the Jains exert themselves badly in the present, since they now experience such intense pain.
The Jains deserve criticism whether or not sentient beings experience pleasure and pain because of past deeds, or the Lord God’s creation, or circumstance and nature, or class of rebirth, or exertion in the present. Such is the doctrine of the Jain ascetics. The Jain ascetics who say this deserve rebuke and criticism on these ten legitimate grounds. That’s how exertion and striving is fruitless.
And how is exertion and striving fruitful? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t bring suffering upon themselves; and they don’t give up legitimate pleasure, but they’re not besotted with that pleasure. They understand: ‘When I actively strive I become dispassionate towards this source of suffering. But when I develop equanimity I become dispassionate towards this other source of suffering.’ So they either actively strive or develop equanimity as appropriate. Through active striving they become dispassionate towards that specific source of suffering, and so that suffering is worn away. Through developing equanimity they become dispassionate towards that other source of suffering, and so that suffering is worn away.
Suppose a man is in love with a woman, full of intense desire and lust. Then he sees her standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing.
What do you think, mendicants? Would that give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for him?”
“Yes, sir. Why is that? Because that man is in love that woman, full of intense desire and lust.”
“Then that man might think: ‘I’m in love with that woman, full of intense desire and lust. When I saw her standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing, it gave rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for me. Why don’t I give up that desire and lust for that woman?’ So that’s what he did. Some time later he sees her again standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing.
What do you think, mendicants? Would that give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for him?”
“No, sir. Why is that? Because he no longer desires that woman.”
“In the same way, a mendicant doesn’t bring suffering upon themselves; and they don’t give up legitimate pleasure, but they’re not besotted with that pleasure. They understand: ‘When I actively strive I become dispassionate towards this source of suffering. But when I develop equanimity I become dispassionate towards this other source of suffering.’ So they either actively strive or develop equanimity as appropriate. Because they have accomplished the goal for which they strived painfully.
Suppose an arrowsmith was heating an arrow shaft between two firebrands, making it straight and fit for use. After it’s been made straight and fit for use, they’d no longer heat it to make it straight and fit for use. Why is that? Because they have accomplished the goal for which they heated it.
In the same way, a mendicant reflects: ‘When I live as I please, unskillful qualities grow and skillful qualities decline. But when I strive painfully, unskillful qualities decline and skillful qualities grow. Why don’t I strive painfully?’ … After some time, they no longer strive painfully. That too is how exertion and striving is fruitful. …

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying among the Sakyans. Now the Sakyans have a city named Devadaha, and there the Blessed One addressed the monks: “Monks!”
“Yes, lord,” the monks responded to him.
The Blessed One said, “Monks, there are some contemplatives & brahmans who teach in this way, who have this view: ‘Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.’ Such is the teaching of the Nigaṇṭhas.
“Going to Nigaṇṭhas who teach in this way, I have asked them, ‘Is it true, friend Nigaṇṭhas, that you teach in this way, that you have this view: “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted”?’
“Having been asked this by me, the Nigaṇṭhas admitted it, ‘Yes.’
“So I said to them, ‘But friends, do you know that you existed in the past, and that you did not not exist?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘And do you know that you did evil actions in the past, and that you did not not do them?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘And do you know that you did such-and-such evil actions in the past?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘And do you know that so-and-so much stress has been exhausted, or that so-and-so much stress remains to be exhausted, or that with the exhaustion of so-and-so much stress all stress will be exhausted?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘But do you know what is the abandoning of unskillful qualities and the attainment of skillful qualities in the here & now?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘So, friends, it seems that you don’t know that you existed in the past, and that you did not not exist… you don’t know what is the abandoning of unskillful qualities and the attainment of skillful qualities in the here & now. That being the case, it is not proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.”
“‘If, however, you knew that you existed in the past, and that you did not not exist; if you knew that you did evil actions in the past, and that you did not not do them; if you knew that you did such-and-such evil actions in the past; you don’t know that so-and-so much stress has been exhausted, or that so-and-so much stress remains to be exhausted, or that with the exhaustion of so-and-so much stress all stress will be exhausted; if you knew what is the abandoning of unskillful qualities and the attainment of skillful qualities in the here & now, then—that being the case—it would be proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.”
“‘Friend Nigaṇṭhas, it’s as if a man were shot with an arrow thickly smeared with poison. As a result of being shot with the arrow, he would feel fierce, sharp, racking pains. His friends & companions, kinsmen & relatives would provide him with a surgeon. The surgeon would cut around the opening of the wound with a knife. As a result of the surgeon’s cutting around the opening of the wound with a knife, the man would feel fierce, sharp, racking pains. The surgeon would probe for the arrow with a probe. As a result of the surgeon’s probing for the arrow with a probe, the man would feel fierce, sharp, racking pains. The surgeon would then pull out the arrow. As a result of the surgeon’s pulling out the arrow, the man would feel fierce, sharp, racking pains. The surgeon would then apply a burning medicine to the mouth of the wound. As a result of the surgeon’s applying a burning medicine to the mouth of the wound, the man would feel fierce, sharp, racking pains. But then at a later time, when the wound had healed and was covered with skin, he would be well & happy, free, master of himself, able to go wherever he liked. The thought would occur to him, “Before, I was shot with an arrow thickly smeared with poison. As a result of being shot with the arrow, I felt fierce, sharp, racking pains. My friends & companions, kinsmen & relatives provided me with a surgeon… The surgeon cut around the opening of the wound with a knife… probed for the arrow with a probe… pulled out the arrow… applied a burning medicine to the mouth of the wound. As a result of his applying a burning medicine to the mouth of the wound, I felt fierce, sharp, racking pains. But now that the wound is healed and covered with skin, I am well & happy, free, master of myself, able to go wherever I like.”
“‘In the same way, friend Nigaṇṭhas, if you knew that you existed in the past, and that you did not not exist… if you knew what is the abandoning of unskillful qualities and the attainment of skillful qualities in the here & now, then—that being the case—it would be proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.” But because you do not know that you existed in the past… you do not know what is the abandoning of unskillful qualities and the attainment of skillful qualities in the here & now, then—that being the case—it is not proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.”
“When this was said, the Nigaṇṭhas said to me, ‘Friend, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta [the leader of the Nigaṇṭhas] is all-knowing, all-seeing, and claims total knowledge & vision thus: “Whether I am walking or standing, sleeping or awake, knowledge & vision are continuously & continually established in me.” He has told us, “Nigaṇṭhas, there are evil actions that you have done in the past. Exhaust them with these painful austerities. When in the present you are restrained in body, restrained in speech, and restrained in mind, that is the non-doing of evil action for the future. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.” We approve of that (teaching), prefer it, and are gratified by it.’
“When this was said, I said to the Nigaṇṭhas, ‘Friend Nigaṇṭhas, there are five things that can turn out in two ways in the here & now. Which five? Conviction, liking, unbroken tradition, reasoning by analogy, & an agreement through pondering views. These are the five things that can turn out in two ways in the here & now. That being the case, what kind of conviction do you have for your teacher with regard to the past? What kind of liking? What kind of unbroken tradition? What kind of reasoning by analogy? What kind of agreement through pondering views?’ But when I said this, I did not see that the Nigaṇṭhas had any legitimate defense of their teaching.
“So I asked them further, ‘Friend Nigaṇṭhas, what do you think? When there is fierce striving, fierce exertion, do you feel fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment? And when there is no fierce striving, no fierce exertion, do you feel no fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment?’
“‘Yes, friend…’
“‘… Then it’s not proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.”
“‘If it were the case that when there was fierce striving, fierce exertion, you felt fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment; and when there was no fierce striving, no fierce exertion, you still felt fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment, then—that being the case—it would be proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.” But because when there is fierce striving, fierce exertion, you feel fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment; and when there was no fierce striving, no fierce exertion, you feel no fierce, sharp, racking pains from harsh treatment, then—that being the case—it is not proper for you to assert that, “Whatever a person experiences—pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain—all is caused by what was done in the past. Thus, with the destruction of old actions through asceticism, and with the non-doing of new actions, there will be no flow into the future. With no flow into the future, there is the ending of action. With the ending of action, the ending of stress. With the ending of stress, the ending of feeling. With the ending of feeling, all suffering & stress will be exhausted.”’ But when I said this, I did not see that the Nigaṇṭhas had any legitimate defense of their teaching.
“So I asked them further, ‘Friend Nigaṇṭhas, what do you think? Can an action to be experienced in the here & now be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced in the future life?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘Can an action to be experienced in the future life be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced in the here & now?’
“‘No, friend.’
“What do you think? Can an action to be experienced as pleasure be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced as pain?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘Can an action to be experienced as pain be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced as pleasure?’
“‘No, friend.’
“What do you think? Can an action ripe to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action not ripe to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘Can an action not ripe to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action ripe to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“What do you think? Can an action greatly to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action barely to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘Can an action barely to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action greatly to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“What do you think? Can an action to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action not to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘Can an action not to be experienced be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced?’
“‘No, friend.’
“‘So, friends, it seems that an action to be experienced in the here & now cannot be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced in the future life. An action to be experienced in the future life cannot be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced in the here & now.… An action to be experienced cannot be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action not to be experienced. An action not to be experienced cannot be turned, through striving & exertion, into an action to be experienced. That being the case, the striving of the Nigaṇṭhas is fruitless, their exertion is fruitless.’
“Such is the teaching of the Nigaṇṭhas. And, such being the teaching of the Nigaṇṭhas, ten legitimate deductions can be drawn that give grounds for censuring them.
“[1] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on what was done in the past, then obviously the Nigaṇṭhas have done bad things in the past, which is why they now feel such fierce, sharp, racking pains.
“[2] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on the creative act of a supreme god, then obviously the Nigaṇṭhas have been created by an evil supreme god, which is why they now feel such fierce, sharp, racking pains.
“[3] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on sheer luck, then obviously the Nigaṇṭhas have evil luck, which is why they now feel such fierce, sharp, racking pains.
“[4] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on birth, then obviously the Nigaṇṭhas have had an evil birth, which is why they now feel such fierce, sharp, racking pains.
“[5] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on efforts in the here & now, then obviously the Nigaṇṭhas have evil efforts in the here & now, which is why they now feel such fierce, sharp, racking pains.
“[6] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on what was done in the past, the Nigaṇṭhas deserve censure. Even if not, they still deserve censure.
“[7] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on the creative act of a supreme god, the Nigaṇṭhas deserve censure. Even if not, they still deserve censure.
“[8] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on sheer luck, the Nigaṇṭhas deserve censure. Even if not, they still deserve censure.
“[9] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on birth, the Nigaṇṭhas deserve censure. Even if not, they still deserve censure.
“[10] If beings experience pleasure & pain based on efforts in the here & now, the Nigaṇṭhas deserve censure. Even if not, they still deserve censure.
“Such is the teaching of the Nigaṇṭhas, monks. And, such being the teaching of the Nigaṇṭhas, these ten legitimate deductions can be drawn that give grounds for censuring them. This is how striving is fruitless, how exertion is fruitless.
“And how is striving fruitful, how is exertion fruitful? There is the case where a monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he is not infatuated on that pleasure. He discerns that ‘When I exert a [physical, verbal, or mental] fabrication against this cause of stress, then from the fabrication of exertion there is dispassion. When I look on with equanimity at that cause of stress, then from the development of equanimity there is dispassion.’ So he exerts a fabrication against the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the fabrication of exertion, and develops equanimity with regard to the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the development of equanimity. Thus the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the fabrication of exertion is exhausted, and the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the development of equanimity is exhausted.
“Suppose that a man is in love with a woman, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. He sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing. What do you think, monks? As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise in him?”
“Yes, lord. Why is that? Because he is in love with her, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion.…”
“Now suppose the thought were to occur to him, ‘I am in love with this woman, my mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. When I see her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, then sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise within me. Why don’t I abandon my desire & passion for that woman?’ So he abandons his desire & passion for that woman, and afterwards sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing. What do you think, monks? As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise in him?”
“No, lord. Why is that? He is dispassionate toward that woman.…”
“In the same way, the monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he is not infatuated with that pleasure. He discerns that ‘When I exert a [physical, verbal, or mental] fabrication against this cause of stress, then from the fabrication of exertion there is dispassion. When I look on with equanimity at that cause of stress, then from the development of equanimity there is dispassion.’ So he exerts a fabrication against the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the fabrication of exertion, and develops equanimity with regard to the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the development of equanimity. Thus the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the fabrication of exertion is exhausted, and the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the development of equanimity is exhausted.
“And further, the monk notices this: ‘When I live according to my pleasure, unskillful qualities increase in me & skillful qualities decline. When I exert myself with stress & pain, though, unskillful qualities decline in me & skillful qualities increase. Why don’t I exert myself with stress & pain?’ So he exerts himself with stress & pain, and while he is exerting himself with stress & pain, unskillful qualities decline in him, & skillful qualities increase. Then at a later time he would no longer exert himself with stress & pain. Why is that? Because he has attained the goal for which he was exerting himself with stress & pain. That is why, at a later time, he would no longer exert himself with stress & pain.

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่นิคมของเจ้าศากยะ ขื่อเทวทหะ ในสักกชนบท สมัยนั้น … พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสดังนี้ว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มีสมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่งมีคำกล่าว (วาทะ) อย่างนี้ มีความเห็น (ทิฏฐิ) อย่างนี้ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ (การบำเพ็ญเพียรอย่างหนัก) เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกนิครนถ์มักมีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราเข้าไปหาพวกนิครนถ์ผู้มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ แล้วถามอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ จริงหรือที่ได้ยินว่า พวกท่านมีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ มีความเห็นอย่างนี้ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกนิครนถ์นั้นถูกเราถามอย่างนี้แล้วก็ยืนยัน เราจึงถามพวกนิครนถ์นั้นอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า เราทั้งหลายได้มีแล้วในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้มีแล้ว.
นิครนถ์เหล่านั้นตอบว่า ไม่ทราบเลย อาวุโส.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า เราทั้งหลายได้ทำบาปกรรมไว้ในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้ทำไว้.
ไม่ทราบเลย อาวุโส.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า เราทั้งหลายได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนี้บ้าง ได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนั้นบ้าง.
ไม่ทราบเลย อาวุโส.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า ทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว หรือว่าทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราต้องทำให้หมดไป หรือว่าเมื่อทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันเราทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.

อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า การละอกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบัน และการบำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างไร

อาวุโส นิครนถ์ เท่าที่พูดกันมานี้เป็นอันว่า พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้มีแล้วในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้มีแล้ว พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้ทำบาปกรรมไว้ในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้ทำไว้ พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนี้บ้าง ได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนั้นบ้าง พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า ทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว หรือว่าทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราต้องทำให้หมดไป หรือว่าเมื่อทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันเราทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า การละอกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบัน และการบำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างไร เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็ไม่สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้มีแล้วในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้มีแล้ว พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้ทำบาปกรรมไว้ในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้ทำไว้ ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนี้บ้าง ได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนั้นบ้าง ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า ทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว หรือว่าทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราต้องทำให้หมดไป หรือว่าเมื่อทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันเราทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า การละอกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบัน และการบำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างไร เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ เปรียบเหมือนบุรุษถูกยิงด้วยลูกศรอาบยาพิษอย่างร้ายแรง เขาพึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการถูกลูกศรแทงนั้น ต่อมา มิตรอำมาตย์ ญาติสาโลหิตของเขาจึงหาหมอผ่าตัดมารักษาเขา ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใช้เครื่องมือชำแหละปากแผลของเขา เขาย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะถูกเครื่องมือชำแหละปากแผล ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใช้เครื่องตรวจค้นหาลูกศร (ที่ปากแผล) เขาก็ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะถูกเครื่องตรวจค้นหาลูกศร (ที่ปากแผล) ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดถอนลูกศรออก เขาก็ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการถอนลูกศรออก ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใส่ยาถอนพิษที่ปากแผล เขาก็ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการใส่ยาถอนพิษที่ปากแผล สมัยต่อมา แผลของเขาหายสนิท มีผิวหนังปิดสนิท บุรุษนั้นหายจากโรคแล้ว มีความสุข มีความเสรี อยู่ตามลำพังได้ ไปไหนมาไหนได้ตามปรารถนา เขาจึงมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า เมื่อก่อน เราถูกยิงด้วยลูกศรอาบยาพิษอย่างร้ายแรง ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการถูกลูกศรแทงนั้น ต่อมา มิตรอำมาตย์ ญาติสาโลหิตจึงหาหมอผ่าตัดมารักษาเรา ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใช้เครื่องมือชำแหละปากแผล เรานั้นได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะถูกเครื่องมือชำแหละปากแผล ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใช้เครื่องตรวจค้นหาลูกศร (ที่ปากแผล) เราก็ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะถูกเครื่องตรวจค้นหาลูกศร (ที่ปากแผล) ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดถอนลูกศรออก เราก็ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการถอนลูกศรออก ขณะที่หมอผ่าตัดใส่ยาถอนพิษที่ปากแผล เราก็ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เพราะการใส่ยาถอนพิษที่ปากแผล บัดนี้ แผลของเราหายสนิท มีผิวหนังปิดสนิท เรานั้นหายจากโรคแล้ว มีความสุข มีความเสรี อยู่ตามลำพังได้ ไปไหนมาไหนได้ตามปรารถนา.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้มีแล้วในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้มีแล้ว พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้ทำบาปกรรมไว้ในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้ทำไว้ ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนี้บ้าง ได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนั้นบ้าง ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า ทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว หรือว่าทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราต้องทำให้หมดไป หรือว่าเมื่อทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันเราทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย ถ้าพวกท่านทราบว่า การละอกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบัน และการบำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างไร เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ก็เพราะเหตุที่พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้มีแล้วในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้มีแล้ว พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้ทำบาปกรรมไว้ในกาลก่อน หรือว่าไม่ได้ทำไว้ พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า เราทั้งหลายได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนี้บ้าง ได้เคยทำบาปกรรมไว้อย่างนั้นบ้าง พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า ทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว หรือว่าทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราต้องทำให้หมดไป หรือว่าเมื่อทุกข์ประมาณเท่านี้เราทำให้หมดไปแล้ว ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันเราทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย พวกท่านไม่ทราบว่า การละอกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบัน และการบำเพ็ญกุศลธรรมในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างไร เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็ไม่สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อเรากล่าวอย่างนี้แล้ว พวกนิครนถ์นั้นได้กล่าวกะเราอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส ท่านนิครนถ์นาฏบุตร เป็นสัพพัญญู (ผู้รู้ธรรมทั้งปวง) เป็นผู้เห็นธรรมทั้งปวง ยืนยันถึงญาณทัสสนะตลอดทุกส่วนว่า เมื่อเราเดินอยู่ก็ดี ยืนอยู่ก็ดี หลับอยู่ก็ดี ตื่นอยู่ก็ดี ญาณทัสสนะได้ปรากฏติดต่อเนื่องไปตลอด ท่านกล่าวอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย บาปกรรมที่พวกท่านทำไว้ในกาลก่อนมีอยู่ พวกท่านจงทำบาปกรรมนั้นให้หมดไปเสีย ด้วยปฏิปทาประกอบด้วยการกระทำที่ทำได้ยากอันเผ็ดร้อนนี้ ข้อที่ท่านทั้งหลายเป็นผู้สำรวมกาย สำรวมวาจา สำรวมใจ ในบัดนี้นั้น จะเป็นการไม่ทำบาปกรรมต่อไป ทั้งนี้ เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย ก็แหละคำนั้นถูกใจและควรแก่พวกข้าพเจ้า และเพราะเหตุนั้น พวกข้าพเจ้าจึงได้พากันชื่นชม.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อพวกนิครนถ์กล่าวแล้วอย่างนี้ เราได้กล่าวกะพวกนิครนถ์นั้น อย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ธรรม ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ มีผล ๒ ส่วนในปัจจุบัน ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ความเชื่อ (ศรัทธา)
๒) ความชอบใจ (รุจิ)
๓) การฟังตามๆ กันมา (อนุสสวะ)
๔) ความตรึกตามอาการ (อาการปริวิตักกะ)
๕) ความชอบใจว่าตรงกับความเห็นของตน (ทิฏฐินิชฌานขันติ)
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ เหล่านี้แล ธรรม ๕ ประการ ที่มีผล ๒ ส่วนในปัจจุบัน.
บรรดาธรรม ๕ ประการนั้น ท่านนิครนถ์ มีความเชื่ออย่างไร ชอบใจอย่างไร ฟังตามๆ กันมาอย่างไร ได้ยินมาอย่างไร ตรึกตามอาการอย่างไร ชอบใจว่าตรงกับความเห็นของตนอย่างไร ในศาสดาผู้มีคำกล่าวเป็นส่วนอดีต ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรามีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้แล จึงไม่เล็งเห็นการโต้ตอบคำกล่าวอันชอบด้วยเหตุผลอะไรๆ ในพวกนิครนถ์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวกะพวกนิครนถ์นั้นต่อไปอีกอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร คือ สมัยใด พวกท่านมีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น แต่สมัยใด พวกท่านไม่มีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า ไม่มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมไม่ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น (เป็นอย่างนั้นใช่ไหม).
นิครนถ์รับว่า อาวุโส โคดม สมัยใด พวกข้าพเจ้ามีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกข้าพเจ้าย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น แต่สมัยใด พวกข้าพเจ้าไม่มีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกข้าพเจ้าย่อมไม่ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ เท่าที่พูดกันมานี้เป็นอันว่า สมัยใด พวกท่านมีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น แต่สมัยใด พวกท่านไม่มีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า ไม่มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมไม่ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็ไม่สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ถ้าสมัยใด พวกท่านมีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น เวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามพึงหยุดได้เอง และสมัยใด พวกท่านไม่มีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า ไม่มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น เวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามก็พึงหยุดได้เอง (เหมือนกัน) เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย.
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ ก็เพราะเหตุที่ สมัยใด พวกท่านมีความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น แต่สมัยใด พวกท่านไม่มีความความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้า ไม่มีความเพียรอย่างแรงกล้า สมัยนั้น พวกท่านย่อมไม่ได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ ซึ่งเกิดจากความพยายามอย่างแรงกล้านั้น เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย พวกท่านก็ไม่สมควรที่จะพยากรณ์ว่า บุรุษบุคคลนี้ย่อมได้รับเวทนาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง จะเป็นสุขก็ตาม เป็นทุกข์ก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกข์ไม่ใช่สุขก็ตาม ทั้งหมดนั้นเป็นเพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน ดังนั้น เพราะหมดกรรมเก่าด้วยตบะ เพราะไม่ทำกรรมใหม่ (กรรม) จึงไม่มีผลต่อไป เพราะไม่มีผลต่อไป จึงสิ้นกรรม เพราะสิ้นกรรม จึงสิ้นทุกข์ เพราะสิ้นทุกข์ จึงสิ้นเวทนา เพราะสิ้นเวทนา ทุกข์ทั้งปวงก็เป็นอันบุคคลนั้นทำให้หมดสิ้นไปด้วย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรามีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้แล จึงไม่เล็งเห็นการโต้ตอบคำกล่าวอันชอบด้วยเหตุผลอะไรๆ ในพวกนิครนถ์.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เรากล่าวกะพวกนิครนถ์นั้นต่อไปอีกอย่างนี้ว่า อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร คือ พวกท่านจะพึงได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้หรือไม่ว่า กรรมใดที่จะให้ผลในปัจจุบัน ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลในสัมปรายะ (ในกาลเบื้องหน้า) ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
ไม่ได้เลย อาวุโส
พวกท่านจะพึงได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้หรือไม่ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลในสัมปรายะ ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลในปัจจุบัน ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
ไม่ได้เลย อาวุโส

พวกท่านจะพึงได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้หรือไม่ว่า กรรมใดที่ยังให้ผลไม่เสร็จสิ้น ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลเสร็จสิ้น ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.

อาวุโส นิครนถ์ พวกท่านจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร คือ พวกท่านจะพึงได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้หรือไม่ว่า กรรมใดที่กำลังให้ผล ขอกรรมนั้นจงอย่าให้ผล ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.

พวกท่านจะพึงได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้หรือไม่ว่า กรรมใดที่ยังไม่ให้ผล ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผล ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
ไม่ได้เลย อาวุโส
อาวุโส นิครนถ์ เท่าที่พูดกันมานี้เป็นอันว่า พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า
๑) กรรมใดที่จะให้ผลในปัจจุบัน ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลในสัมปรายะ (ในกาลเบื้องหน้า) ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๒) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลในสัมปรายะ ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลในปัจจุบัน ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๓) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลเป็นความสุข ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลเป็นความทุกข์ ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๔) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลเป็นความทุกข์ ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลเป็นความสุข ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๕) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลเสร็จสิ้นแล้ว ขอกรรมนั้นจงอย่าให้ผลเสร็จสิ้น ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๖) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ยังให้ผลไม่เสร็จสิ้น ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลเสร็จสิ้น ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๗) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ให้ผลมาก ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลน้อย ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๘) กรรมใดที่ให้ผลน้อย ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผลมาก ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๙) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่กำลังให้ผล ขอกรรมนั้นจงอย่าให้ผล ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
๑๐) พวกท่านไม่ได้ตามปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า กรรมใดที่ยังไม่ให้ผล ขอกรรมนั้นจงให้ผล ด้วยความพยายาม หรือด้วยความเพียรนี้เถิด.
เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ท่านนิครนถ์ทั้งหลาย ความพยายามของพวกท่านก็ไร้ผล ความเพียรของพวกท่านก็ไร้ผล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกนิครนถ์มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ การกล่าวก่อนและการกล่าวตามอันชอบด้วยเหตุผล ๑๐ ประการของพวกนิครนถ์ผู้มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ ย่อมถึงฐานะที่ควรถูกตำหนิ.
๑) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน พวกนิครนถ์ต้องเป็นผู้ทำกรรมชั่วไว้ในกาลก่อนเป็นแน่ เพราะในบัดนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เห็นปานนี้.
๒) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่อิศวรเนรมิตให้ พวกนิครนถ์ต้องเป็นผู้ถูกอิศวรผู้ชั่วช้าเนรมิตมาแน่ เพราะในบัดนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เห็นปานนี้.
๓) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่มีความบังเอิญ พวกนิครนถ์ต้องเป็นผู้มีความบังเอิญชั่วแน่ เพราะในบัดนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เห็นปานนี้.
๔) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งอภิชาติ พวกนิครนถ์ต้องเป็นผู้มีอภิชาติเลวแน่ เพราะในบัดนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เห็นปานนี้.
๕) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งความพยายามในปัจจุบัน พวกนิครนถ์ต้องเป็นผู้มีความพยายามในปัจจุบันเลวแน่ เพราะในบัดนี้ พวกเขาจึงได้รับเวทนาอันเป็นทุกข์กล้า เจ็บแสบ เห็นปานนี้.
๖) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ไม่ได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งกรรมที่ตนทำไว้ในกาลก่อน พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ.
๗) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่อิศวรเนรมิตให้ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ไม่ได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่อิศวรเนรมิตให้ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ.
๘) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่มีความบังเอิญ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ไม่ได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุที่มีความบังเอิญ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ.
๙) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งอภิชาติ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ไม่ได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งอภิชาติ พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ.
๑๐) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ย่อมได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งความพยายามในปัจจุบัน พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าหมู่สัตว์ไม่ได้รับความสุขและความทุกข์ เพราะเหตุแห่งความพยายามในปัจจุบัน พวกนิครนถ์ก็สมควรถูกตำหนิ.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกนิครนถ์มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ การกล่าวก่อนและการกล่าวตามอันชอบด้วยเหตุผล ๑๐ ประการของพวกนิครนถ์ผู้มีคำกล่าวอย่างนี้ ย่อมถึงฐานะที่ควรถูกตำหนิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความพยายามที่ไร้ผล ความเพียรที่ไร้ผล เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความพยายามที่มีผล ความเพียรที่มีผล เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ไม่เอาทุกข์ทับถมตนที่ไม่มีทุกข์ทับถม ไม่สละความสุขที่เกิดโดยธรรม ไม่เป็นผู้หมกมุ่นในความสุขนั้น เธอย่อมทราบชัดอย่างนี้ว่า ถึงเรานี้จักยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อเริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะ (ความคลายกำหนัด) เพราะการตั้งความเพียรนั้น อนึ่ง ถึงเรานี้จะยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ เธอนั้นจึงเริ่มตั้งความเพียร อย่างที่ภิกษุผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อเริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะเพราะการเริ่มตั้งความเพียรนั้น อนึ่ง เธอนั้นบำเพ็ญอุเบกขา อย่างที่ภิกษุผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ เมื่อเธอนั้นผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์เริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะเพราะการตั้งความเพียรนั้น แม้อย่างนี้ ทุกข์นั้นก็เป็นอันเธอสลัดได้แล้ว อนึ่ง เมื่อเธอนั้นผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ แม้อย่างนี้ ทุกข์นั้นก็เป็นอันภิกษุนั้นสลัดได้แล้ว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนชายผู้กำหนัด มีจิตปฏิพัทธ์พอใจอย่างแรงกล้า มุ่งหมายอย่างแรงกล้าในหญิงคนหนึ่ง เขาเห็นหญิงคนนั้นยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร ความเศร้าโศก ความรำพัน ความทุกข์กาย ความทุกข์ใจ และความคับแค้นใจ จะพึงเกิดขึ้นแก่ชายคนนั้น เพราะได้เห็นหญิงคนนั้น ยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่นบ้างหรือไม่.
ต้องเป็นเช่นนั้น ภันเต.
ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร.
ภันเต เพราะชายคนนั้นกำหนัดนักแล้ว มีจิตปฏิพัทธ์พอใจอย่างแรงกล้า มุ่งหมายอย่างแรงกล้าในหญิงคนนั้น ดังนั้น ความเศร้าโศก ความรำพัน ความทุกข์กาย ความทุกข์ใจ และความคับแค้นใจ จึงเกิดขึ้นแก่เขาได้ เพราะได้เห็นหญิงคนนั้น ยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต่อมาชายคนนั้นมีความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า เรากำหนัดนักแล้ว มีจิตปฏิพัทธ์ พอใจอย่างแรงกล้า มุ่งหมายอย่างแรงกล้าในหญิงคนนั้น ความเศร้าโศก ความรำพัน ความทุกข์กาย ความทุกข์ใจ และความคับแค้นใจ จึงเกิดขึ้นแก่เราได้ เพราะเห็นหญิงคนนั้น ยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่น ถ้าอย่างไร เราพึงละความกำหนัดพอใจในหญิงคนนั้นที่เรามีเสียเถิด เขาจึงละความกำหนัดพอใจในหญิงคนนั้นเสีย สมัยต่อมาเขาได้เห็นหญิงคนนั้น ยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจะสำคัญความข้อนั้นว่าอย่างไร ความเศร้าโศก ความรำพัน ความทุกข์กาย ความทุกข์ใจ และความคับแค้นใจ จะพึงเกิดขึ้นแก่ชายนั้น เพราะได้เห็นหญิงคนนั้น ยืนพูดจากระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่นบ้างหรือไม่.

ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร.
ภันเต เพราะชายคนนั้น คลายกำหนัดในหญิงคนนั้นแล้ว ดังนั้น ความเศร้าโศก ความรำพัน ความทุกข์กาย ความทุกข์ใจ และความคับแค้นใจ จึงไม่เกิดขึ้นแก่เขา เพราะการได้เห็นหญิงนั้น ยืนพูดกระซิกกระซี้ร่าเริงอยู่กับชายอื่น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ภิกษุไม่เอาทุกข์ทับถมตนที่ไม่มีทุกข์ทับถม ไม่สละความสุขที่เกิดโดยธรรม ไม่เป็นผู้หมกมุ่นในความสุขนั้น เธอย่อมทราบชัดอย่างนี้ว่า ถึงเรานี้จักยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อเริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะ (ความคลายกำหนัด) เพราะการตั้งความเพียรนั้น อนึ่ง ถึงเรานี้จะยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ เธอนั้นจึงเริ่มตั้งความเพียร อย่างที่ภิกษุผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อเริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะเพราะการเริ่มตั้งความเพียรนั้น อนึ่ง เธอนั้นบำเพ็ญอุเบกขา อย่างที่ภิกษุผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ เมื่อเธอนั้นผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์เริ่มตั้งความเพียร ย่อมมีวิราคะเพราะการตั้งความเพียรนั้น แม้อย่างนี้ ทุกข์นั้นก็เป็นอันเธอสลัดได้แล้ว อนึ่ง เมื่อเธอนั้นผู้ยังมีเหตุแห่งทุกข์ เมื่อวางเฉย คือ บำเพ็ญอุเบกขาอยู่ ก็ย่อมมีวิราคะ แม้อย่างนี้ ทุกข์นั้นก็เป็นอันภิกษุนั้นสลัดได้แล้ว ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความพยายามที่มีผล ความเพียรที่มีผล เป็นอย่างนี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุพิจารณาเห็นดังนี้ว่า เมื่อเราอยู่ตามสบายอกุศลธรรมย่อมเจริญยิ่ง กุศลธรรมย่อมเสื่อมไป แต่เมื่อเราเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบาก อกุศลธรรมย่อมเสื่อมไป กุศลธรรมย่อมเจริญยิ่ง ถ้าอย่างไร เราพึงเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบากเถิด เธอจึงเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบาก เมื่อเธอเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบากอยู่ อกุศลธรรมย่อมเสื่อมไป กุศลธรรมย่อมเจริญยิ่ง สมัยต่อมา เธอก็ไม่ต้องเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบากอีก ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะภิกษุนั้นเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบากเพื่อประโยชน์ใด ประโยชน์นั้นของเธอเป็นอันสำเร็จแล้ว ดังนั้น สมัยต่อมา เธอจึงไม่ต้องเริ่มตั้งตนไว้ในความลำบากอีก ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนช่างศร ย่างลนลูกศรบนข่าไฟ ๒ อัน เพื่อดัดให้ตรงจนใช้การได้ เพราะเหตุที่ลูกศรเป็นของอันช่างศรย่างลนบนข่าไฟ ๒ อัน เพื่อดัดให้ตรงจนใช้การได้แล้ว สมัยต่อมา ช่างศรนั้นก็ไม่ต้องย่างลนลูกศรนั้นบนข่าไฟ ๒ อัน เพื่อดัดให้ตรงอีก ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะช่างศรนั้นพึงย่างลนลูกศรบนข่าไฟ ๒ อัน เพื่อประโยชน์ใด ประโยชน์นั้นของเขาเป็นอันสำเร็จแล้ว ดังนั้น สมัยต่อมา ช่างศรจึงไม่ต้องย่างลนลูกศรบนข่าไฟ ๒ อัน เพื่อดัดให้ตรงอีก.
