The Buddha’s way of training people

Then Kesi the horse trainer went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Kesi, you’re known as a horse trainer. Just how do you guide a horse in training?”
“Sir, I guide a horse in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.”
“Kesi, what do you do with a horse in training that doesn’t follow these forms of training?”
“In that case, sir, I kill it. Why is that? So that I don’t disgrace my tradition.
But sir, the Buddha is the supreme guide for those who wish to train. Just how do you guide a person in training?”
“Kesi, I guide a person in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.
The gentle way is this: ‘This is good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life as a god. This is life as a human.’
The harsh way is this: ‘This is bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life in hell. This is life as an animal. This is life as a ghost.’
The both gentle and harsh way is this: ‘This is good conduct … this is bad conduct …’”
“Sir, what do you do with a person in training who doesn’t follow these forms of training?”
“In that case, Kesi, I kill them.”
“Sir, it’s not appropriate for the Buddha to kill living creatures. And yet you say you kill them.”
“It’s true, Kesi, it’s not appropriate for a Realized One to kill living creatures. But when a person in training doesn’t follow any of these forms of training, the Realized One doesn’t think they’re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions. For it is killing in the training of the Noble One when the Realized One doesn’t think they’re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.”
“Well, they’re definitely dead when the Realized One doesn’t think they’re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions. Excellent, sir! … From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

Then Kesin the horse trainer went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down, sat to one side. As he was sitting there, the Blessed One said to him: “You, Kesin, are well known as a trainer of tamable horses. How do you train a tamable horse?”
“Lord, I train a tamable horse (sometimes) with mildness, (sometimes) with harshness, (sometimes) with both mildness & harshness.”
“And if a tamable horse doesn’t submit either to a mild training or to a harsh training or to a mild & harsh training, Kesin, what do you do?”
“If a tamable horse doesn’t submit either to a mild training or to a harsh training or to a mild and harsh training, lord, then I kill it. Why is that? (I think:) ‘Don’t let this be a disgrace to my lineage of teachers.’ But the Blessed One, lord, is the unexcelled trainer of tamable people. How do you train a tamable person?”
“Kesin, I train a tamable person (sometimes) with mildness, (sometimes) with harshness, (sometimes) with both mildness & harshness.
“In using mildness, (I teach:) ‘Such is good bodily conduct. Such is the result of good bodily conduct. Such is good verbal conduct. Such is the result of good verbal conduct. Such is good mental conduct. Such is the result of good mental conduct. Such are the devas. Such are human beings.’
“In using harshness, (I teach:) ‘Such is bodily misconduct. Such is the result of bodily misconduct. Such is verbal misconduct. Such is the result of verbal misconduct. Such is mental misconduct. Such is the result of mental misconduct. Such is hell. Such is the animal womb. Such the realm of the hungry ghosts.’
“In using mildness & harshness, (I teach:) ‘Such is good bodily conduct. Such is the result of good bodily conduct. Such is bodily misconduct. Such is the result of bodily misconduct. Such is good verbal conduct. Such is the result of good verbal conduct. Such is verbal misconduct. Such is the result of verbal misconduct. Such is good mental conduct. Such is the result of good mental conduct. Such is mental misconduct. Such is the result of mental misconduct. Such are the devas. Such are human beings. Such is hell. Such is the animal womb. Such the realm of the hungry ghosts.’”
“And if a tamable person doesn’t submit either to a mild training or to a harsh training or to a mild & harsh training, what do you do?”
“If a tamable person doesn’t submit either to a mild training or to a harsh training or to a mild & harsh training, then I kill him, Kesin.”
“But it’s not proper for our Blessed One to take life! And yet the Blessed One just said, ‘I kill him, Kesin.’”
“It is true, Kesin, that it’s not proper for a Tathāgata to take life. But if a tamable person doesn’t submit either to a mild training or to a harsh training or to a mild & harsh training, then the Tathāgata doesn’t regard him as being worth speaking to or admonishing. His observant companions in the holy life don’t regard him as being worth speaking to or admonishing. This is what it means to be totally destroyed in the Dhamma & Vinaya, when the Tathāgata doesn’t regard one as being worth speaking to or admonishing, and one’s observant companions in the holy life don’t regard one as being worth speaking to or admonishing.”
“Yes, lord, wouldn’t one be totally destroyed if the Tathāgata doesn’t regard one as being worth speaking to or admonishing, and one’s observant companions in the holy life don’t regard one as being worth speaking to or admonishing?
“Magnificent, lord! Magnificent! Just as if he were to place upright what was overturned, to reveal what was hidden, to show the way to one who was lost, or to carry a lamp into the dark so that those with eyes could see forms, in the same way has the Blessed One—through many lines of reasoning—made the Dhamma clear. I go to the Blessed One for refuge, to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of monks. May the Blessed One remember me as a lay follower who has gone to him for refuge, from this day forward, for life.”
ครั้งนั้น สารถีผู้ฝึกม้าชื่อเกสี เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่สมควร ครั้นแล้วพระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสถามว่า
เกสี ใครๆ ก็รู้กันดีว่า ท่านเป็นสารถีผู้ฝึกม้า ก็ท่านฝึกหัดม้าที่ควรฝึกอย่างไร.
สารถีผู้ฝึกม้าชื่อเกสีกราบทูลว่า ภันเต ข้าพระองค์ฝึกหัดม้าที่ควรฝึก ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมบ้าง ด้วยวิธีรุนแรงบ้าง ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกันบ้าง.
เกสี ถ้าม้าที่ควรฝึกของท่าน ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อม ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีรุนแรง ฝึกไม่ได้ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน ท่านจะทำอย่างไรกับมัน.
ภันเต ถ้าม้าที่ควรฝึกของข้าพระองค์ ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อม ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีรุนแรง ฝึกไม่ได้ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน ข้าพระองค์ก็จะฆ่ามันเสีย ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะคิดว่า ข้อตำหนิอย่าได้มีแก่สำนักอาจารย์ของเราเลย ภันเต ก็พระผู้มีพระภาคย่อมเป็นสารถีฝึกบุรุษที่ควรฝึก ไม่มีใครยิ่งไปกว่า พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงฝึกบุรุษที่ควรฝึกอย่างไร.
เกสี เราแล ย่อมฝึกบุรุษที่ควรฝึกด้วยด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมบ้าง ด้วยวิธีรุนแรงบ้าง ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกันบ้าง เกสี ในทั้ง ๓ วิธีนั้น การฝึกดังต่อไปนี้ เป็นวิธีละมุนละม่อม คือ (การชี้แจงว่า) กายสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของกายสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ วจีสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของวจีสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ มโนสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของมโนสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ เทวดาเป็นอย่างนี้ มนุษย์เป็นอย่างนี้ เกสี การฝึกดังต่อไปนี้ เป็นวิธีรุนแรง คือ (การชี้แจงว่า) กายทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของกายทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ วจีทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของวจีทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ มโนทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของมโนทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ นรกเป็นอย่างนี้ กำเนิดสัตว์เดรัจฉานเป็นอย่างนี้ เปรตวิสัยเป็นอย่างนี้ เกสี การฝึกดังต่อไปนี้ เป็นวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน คือ (การชี้แจงว่า) กายสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของกายสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ กายทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของกายทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ วจีสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของวจีสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ วจีทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของวจีทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ มโนสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของมโนสุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ มโนทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ ผลของมโนทุจริตเป็นอย่างนี้ เทวดาเป็นอย่างนี้ มนุษย์เป็นอย่างนี้ นรกเป็นอย่างนี้ กำเนิดสัตว์เดรัจฉานเป็นอย่างนี้ เปรตวิสัยเป็นอย่างนี้.
ภันเต ถ้าบุรุษที่ควรฝึกของพระองค์ ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อม ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีรุนแรง ฝึกไม่ได้ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน พระผู้มีพระภาคจะทำอย่างไรกะเขา.
เกสี ถ้าบุรุษที่ควรฝึกของเรา ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อม ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีรุนแรง ฝึกไม่ได้ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน เราก็ฆ่าเขาเสีย.
ภันเต การฆ่าสัตว์ไม่สมควรแก่พระผู้มีพระภาคเลย ก็เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น เหตุใดพระผู้มีพระภาคจึงตรัสอย่างนี้ว่า เราก็ฆ่าเขาเสีย.
เกสี การฆ่าสัตว์ไม่สมควรแก่เราจริง ก็แต่ว่าบุรุษที่ควรฝึกคนใด ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อม ฝึกไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีรุนแรง ฝึกไม่ได้ทั้งด้วยวิธีละมุนละม่อมและวิธีรุนแรงรวมกัน ตถาคตก็ไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไป แม้เพื่อนผู้ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ร่วมกันที่เป็นผู้รู้ทั้งหลาย ก็ไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไปด้วย เกสี ข้อที่ตถาคต ไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไป แม้เพื่อผู้ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ร่วมกันที่เป็นผู้รู้ทั้งหลาย ก็ไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไป นี้เป็นการฆ่าอย่างดีในอริยวินัย.
ภันเต ข้อที่พระตถาคตไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไป แม้เพื่อนผู้ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ร่วมกันที่เป็นผู้รู้ทั้งหลาย ก็ไม่ถือว่าบุรุษนั้น เป็นคนที่ควรว่ากล่าว ควรสั่งสอนอีกต่อไปด้วย นั้นเป็นการฆ่าอย่างดีแน่นอน ภันเต ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ภันเต ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก เปรียบเหมือนบุคคลหงายของที่คว่ำ เปิดของที่ปิด บอกทางแก่คนผู้หลงทาง หรือส่องประทีปในที่มืดด้วยหวังว่า คนมีตาดีจะได้มองเห็นรูป ดังนี้ พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงประกาศธรรมโดยอเนกปริยายอย่างนี้ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ภันเต ข้าพระองค์นี้ ขอถึงพระผู้มีพระภาค กับทั้งพระธรรม และทั้งพระภิกษุสงฆ์ว่าเป็นสรณะ ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดทรงจำข้าพระองค์ว่า เป็นอุบาสกผู้ถึงสรณะตลอดชีวิต ตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป.
