The four ways of developing immersion further.

“Mendicants, there are these four ways of developing immersion further. What four? There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in the present life. There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision. There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness. There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements.

And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in the present life? It’s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption … second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in the present life.

And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision? It’s when a mendicant focuses on the perception of light, concentrating on the perception of day, regardless of whether it’s night or day. And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, they develop a mind that’s full of radiance. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision.

And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness? It’s when a mendicant knows feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. They know perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. They know thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness.

And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements? It’s when a mendicant meditates observing rise and fall in the five grasping aggregates. ‘Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form. Such is feeling, such is the origin of feeling, such is the ending of feeling. Such is perception, such is the origin of perception, such is the ending of perception. Such are choices, such is the origin of choices, such is the ending of choices. Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.’ This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements.

These are the four ways of developing immersion further. And it was in this connection that I said in ‘The Way to the Beyond’, in ‘The Questions of Puṇṇaka’:

‘Having assessed the world high and low,
there is nothing in the world that disturbs them.
Peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hope,
they’ve crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.’”

“Monks, these are the four developments of concentration. Which four? There is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to a pleasant abiding in the here & now. There is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the attainment of knowledge & vision. There is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to mindfulness & alertness. There is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the ending of the effluents.

“And what is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to a pleasant abiding in the here & now? There is the case where a monk—quite secluded from sensuality, secluded from unskillful qualities—enters & remains in the first jhāna: rapture & pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. With the stilling of directed thoughts & evaluations, he enters & remains in the second jhāna: rapture & pleasure born of concentration, unification of awareness free from directed thought & evaluation—internal assurance. With the fading of rapture, he remains equanimous, mindful, & alert, and senses pleasure with the body. He enters & remains in the third jhāna, of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous & mindful, he has a pleasant abiding.’ With the abandoning of pleasure & pain—as with the earlier disappearance of elation & distress—he enters & remains in the fourth jhāna: purity of equanimity & mindfulness, neither pleasure nor pain. This is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to a pleasant abiding in the here & now.1

“And what is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the attainment of knowledge & vision? There is the case where a monk attends to the perception of light and is resolved on the perception of daytime (at any hour of the day). Day (for him) is the same as night, night is the same as day. By means of an awareness open & unhampered, he develops a brightened mind. This is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the attainment of knowledge & vision.2

“And what is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to mindfulness & alertness? There is the case where feelings are known to the monk as they arise, known as they persist, known as they subside. Perceptions are known to him as they arise, known as they persist, known as they subside. Thoughts are known to him as they arise, known as they persist, known as they subside. This is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to mindfulness & alertness.3

“And what is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the ending of the effluents? There is the case where a monk remains focused on arising & falling away with reference to the five clinging-aggregates: ‘Such is form, such its origination, such its passing away. Such is feeling, such its origination, such its passing away. Such is perception, such its origination, such its passing away. Such are fabrications, such their origination, such their passing away. Such is consciousness, such its origination, such its passing away.’ This is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the ending of the effluents.4

“These are the four developments of concentration.

“And it was in connection with this that I stated in Puṇṇaka’s Question in the Way to the Far Shore [Sn 5:3]:

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สมาธิภาวนา ๔ ประการเหล่านี้ ๔ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ

๑) สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบันมีอยู่

๒) สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อได้ญาณทัสสนะมีอยู่

๓) สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อสติสัมปชัญญะมีอยู่

๔) สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะ มีอยู่.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบัน เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เพราะสงัดจากกามและอกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย จึงบรรลุปฐมฌาน อันมีวิตกวิจาร มีปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากวิเวกแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะวิตกวิจารระงับไป จึงบรรลุทุติยฌาน อันเป็นเครื่องผ่องใสแห่งจิตในภายใน เป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร มีแต่ปีติและสุข อันเกิดจากสมาธิแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะความจางคลายไปแห่งปีติ จึงอยู่อุเบกขา มีสติสัมปชัญญะ และเสวยสุขด้วยกาย จึงบรรลุตติยฌาน อันพระอริยะกล่าวว่า ผู้นั้นเป็นผู้อยู่อุเบกขา มีสติ อยู่เป็นสุขแล้วแลอยู่ เพราะละสุขและทุกข์เสียได้ เพราะความดับไปแห่งโสมนัสและโทมนัสในกาลก่อน จึงบรรลุจตุตถฌาน อันไม่มีทุกข์ไม่มีสุข มีแต่ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งสติเพราะอุเบกขาแล้วแลอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แล สมาธิภาวนา อันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความอยู่เป็นสุขในปัจจุบัน.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อได้ญาณทัสสนะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมกระทำไว้ในใจถึงอาโลกสัญญา (ความกำหนดหมายแสงสว่าง) อธิษฐานทิวาสัญญา (ตั้งความสำคัญว่าเป็นเวลากลางวัน) คือ กลางวันอย่างไร กลางคืนก็อย่างนั้น กลางคืนอย่างไร กลางวันก็อย่างนั้น เธอมีใจอันสงัด ปราศจากเครื่องรัดรึง อบรมจิตให้มีความสว่างอยู่ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แล สมาธิภาวนา อันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อได้ญาณทัสสนะ.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อสติสัมปชัญญะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ เวทนาเกิดขึ้น ก็รู้แจ้ง (เวทนา) ตั้งอยู่ก็รู้แจ้ง (เวทนา) ดับไปก็รู้แจ้ง  สัญญาเกิดขึ้น ก็รู้แจ้ง (สัญญา) ตั้งอยู่ก็รู้แจ้ง (สัญญา) ดับไปก็รู้แจ้ง  วิตกทั้งหลายเกิดขึ้น ก็รู้แจ้ง (วิตกทั้งหลาย) ตั้งอยู่ก็รู้แจ้ง (วิตกทั้งหลาย) ดับไปก็รู้แจ้ง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แล สมาธิภาวนา อันบุคคลเจริญ กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อสติสัมปชัญญะ.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมาธิภาวนาอันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะ เป็นอย่างไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ มีปกติพิจารณาเห็นความเกิดขึ้นและความเสื่อมไปในอุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ อยู่ว่า รูปเป็นอย่างนี้ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งรูปเป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับแห่งรูปเป็นอย่างนี้ เวทนาเป็นอย่างนี้ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งเวทนาเป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับแห่งเวทนาเป็นอย่างนี้ สัญญาเป็นอย่างนี้ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งสัญญาเป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับแห่งสัญญาเป็นอย่างนี้ สังขารเป็นอย่างนี้ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งสังขารเป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับแห่งสังขารเป็นอย่างนี้ วิญญาณเป็นอย่างนี้ ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งวิญญาณเป็นอย่างนี้ ความดับแห่งวิญญาณเป็นอย่างนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แล สมาธิภาวนา อันบุคคลเจริญแล้ว กระทำให้มากแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปเพื่อความสิ้นอาสวะ.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เหล่านี้แล สมาธิภาวนา ๔ ประการ.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็คำนี้ เรากล่าวแล้วในปุณณปัญหา ในปรายนวรรค หมายเอาความข้อนี้ว่า

บุคคลใด รู้สิ่งสูงต่ำในโลก

เป็นเหตุไม่มีความหวั่นไหว ในโลกไหนๆ

เรากล่าวว่า บุคคลนั้นเป็นผู้สงบ

ปราศจากควัน คือ ความโกรธ

เป็นผู้ไม่มีความคับแค้น เป็นผู้หมดความอยาก

ข้ามพ้นชาติและชราได้แล้ว.
