Not understanding and not penetrating four noble truths causes wandering and transmigrating for such a very long time.

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis at the village of Koṭi. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants: “Mendicants, not understanding and not penetrating four noble truths, both you and I have wandered and transmigrated for such a very long time.
What four? The noble truths of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. These noble truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and the path have been understood and comprehended. Craving for continued existence has been cut off; the attachment to continued existence is ended; now there’ll be no more future lives.”
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“Because of not truly seeing
the four noble truths,
we have transmigrated for a long time
from one rebirth to the next.
But now that these truths have been seen,
the attachment to rebirth is eradicated.
The root of suffering is cut off,
now there’ll be no more future lives.”

On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Vajjians at Koṭigama. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus: “Bhikkhus, it is because of not understanding and not penetrating the Four Noble Truths that you and I have roamed and wandered through this long course of saṁsara. What four?
“It is, bhikkhus, because of not understanding and not penetrating the noble truth of suffering that you and I have roamed and wandered through this long course of saṁsara. It is because of not understanding and not penetrating the noble truth of the origin of suffering … the noble truth of the cessation of suffering … the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering that you and I have roamed and wandered through this long course of saṁsara.
“That noble truth of suffering, bhikkhus, has been understood and penetrated. That noble truth of the origin of suffering has been understood and penetrated. That noble truth of the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated. That noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated. Craving for existence has been cut off; the conduit to existence has been destroyed; now there is no more renewed existence.”
This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:
“Because of not seeing as they are
The Four Noble Truths,
We have wandered through the long course
In the various kinds of births.“Now these truths have been seen;
The conduit to existence is severed;
Cut off is the root of suffering:
Now there is no more renewed existence.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ โกฏิคามในแคว้นวัชชี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาแล้วตรัสว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะไม่รู้ถึง ไม่แทงตลอดซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ ประการ เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย จึงได้ท่องเที่ยวไปแล้วในสังสารวัฏ ตลอดกาลยืดยาวนานถึงเพียงนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสัจ ๔ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะไม่รู้ถึง ไม่แทงตลอด ซึ่งอริยสัจ คือ ทุกข์ เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย จึงได้ท่องเที่ยวไปแล้วในสังสารวัฏ ตลอดกาลยืดยาวนานถึงเพียงนี้.
เพราะไม่รู้ถึง ไม่แทงตลอด ซึ่งอริยสัจ คือ เหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย จึงได้ท่องเที่ยวไปแล้วในสังสารวัฏ ตลอดกาลยืดยาวนานถึงเพียงนี้.
เพราะไม่รู้ถึง ไม่แทงตลอด ซึ่งอริยสัจ คือ ความดับไม่เหลือของทุกข์ เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย จึงได้ท่องเที่ยวไปแล้วในสังสารวัฏ ตลอดกาลยืดยาวนานถึงเพียงนี้.
เพราะไม่รู้ถึง ไม่แทงตลอด ซึ่งอริยสัจ คือ ข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับไม่เหลือของทุกข์ เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย จึงได้ท่องเที่ยวไปแล้วในสังสารวัฏ ตลอดกาลยืดยาวนานถึงเพียงนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่ออริยสัจ คือ ทุกข์ เป็นสิ่งที่เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย รู้ถึงและแทงตลอดแล้ว เมื่ออริยสัจ คือ เหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ เป็นสิ่งที่เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย รู้ถึงและแทงตลอดแล้ว เมื่ออริยสัจ คือ ความดับไม่เหลือของทุกข์ เป็นสิ่งที่เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย รู้ถึงและแทงตลอดแล้ว เมื่ออริยสัจ คือ ข้อปฏิบัติให้ถึงความดับไม่เหลือของทุกข์ เป็นสิ่งที่เราและพวกเธอทั้งหลาย รู้ถึงและแทงตลอดแล้ว ตัณหาในภพ ก็ถูกถอนขึ้นขาด ตัณหาที่จะนำไปสู่ภพ ก็สิ้นไปหมด บัดนี้ ความต้องเกิดขึ้นอีก มิได้มี ดังนี้.
เพราะไม่เห็นอริยสัจ ๔ ตามความเป็นจริง
เราและเธอทั้งหลาย ได้ท่องเที่ยวไปในชาตินั้นๆ ตลอดกาลนาน
อริยสัจ ๔ เหล่านี้ เราและเธอทั้งหลายเห็นแล้ว
ตัณหาที่จะนำไปสู่ภพถอนขึ้นได้แล้ว
มูลแห่งทุกข์ตัดขาดแล้ว บัดนี้ภพใหม่ไม่มี.
