When cultivating the development, one can liberate oneself.

“Mendicants, when a mendicant is not committed to development, they might wish: ‘If only my mind were freed from the defilements by not grasping!’ Even so, their mind is not freed from defilements by not grasping. Why is that? It’s because they’re undeveloped. Undeveloped in what? The four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.
Suppose there was a chicken with eight or ten or twelve eggs. But she had not properly sat on them to keep them warm and incubated. Even if that chicken might wish: ‘If only my chicks could break out of the eggshell with their claws and beak and hatch safely!’ Still they can’t break out and hatch safely. Why is that? Because she has not properly sat on them to keep them warm and incubated.
In the same way, when a mendicant is not committed to development, they might wish: ‘If only my mind was freed from the defilements by not grasping!’ Even so, their mind is not freed from defilements by not grasping. Why is that? It’s because they’re undeveloped. Undeveloped in what? The four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.

They don’t know how much of the handle was worn away today, how much yesterday, and how much previously. They just know what has been worn away. In the same way, when a mendicant is committed to development, they don’t know how much of the defilements were worn away today, how much yesterday, and how much previously. They just know what has been worn away.
Suppose there was a sea-faring ship bound together with ropes. For six months they deteriorated in the water. Then in the cold season it was hauled up on dry land, where the ropes were weathered by wind and sun. When the clouds soaked it with rain, the ropes would readily collapse and rot away. In the same way, when a mendicant is committed to development their fetters readily collapse and rot away.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เมื่อภิกษุไม่ประกอบเนืองๆ ในการเจริญภาวนาอยู่ แม้จะมีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอจิตของเราจงหลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานเถิด ดังนี้ โดยที่แท้ จิตของภิกษุนั้น ย่อมไม่หลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานได้ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ควรกล่าวว่า เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญ เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญอะไร เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญสติปัฏฐาน ๔ สัมมัปปธาน ๔ อิทธิบาท ๔ อินทรีย์ ๕ พละ ๕ โพชฌงค์ ๗ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนแม่ไก่มีไข่อยู่ ๘ ฟอง ๑๐ ฟอง หรือ ๑๒ ฟอง ไข่เหล่านั้น แม่ไก่กกไม่ดี ให้ความอบอุ่นไม่พอ ฟักไม่ดี แม่ไก่นั้น แม้จะมีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอให้ลูกของเราจงใช้ปลายเล็บเท้า หรือจะงอยปากเจาะกะเปาะไข่ พาตัวออกมาโดยสวัสดีเถิด ดังนี้ โดยที่แท้ ลูกไก่เหล่านั้น ก็ไม่สามารถที่จะใช้ปลายเล็บเท้า หรือจะงอยปากเจาะกะเปาะไข่ พาตัวออกมาโดยสวัสดีได้ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะเหตุว่า แม่ไก่กกไข่ไม่ดี ให้ความอบอุ่นไม่พอ ฟักไม่ดี.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เมื่อภิกษุไม่ประกอบเนืองๆ ในเจริญภาวนาอยู่ แม้จะมีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอจิตของเราจงหลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานเถิด ดังนี้ โดยที่แท้ จิตของภิกษุนั้น ย่อมไม่หลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานได้ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ควรกล่าวว่า เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญ เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญอะไร เพราะไม่ได้มีการเจริญสติปัฏฐาน ๔ สัมมัปปธาน ๔ อิทธิบาท ๔ อินทรีย์ ๕ พละ ๕ โพชฌงค์ ๗ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘.

ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เมื่อภิกษุประกอบเนืองๆ ในการเจริญภาวนาอยู่ แม้จะไม่มีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอจิตของเราจงหลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานเถิด ดังนี้ โดยที่แท้ จิตของภิกษุนั้น ย่อมหลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทานได้เอง ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ควรกล่าวว่า เพราะได้มีการเจริญ เพราะได้มีการเจริญอะไร เพราะได้มีการเจริญสติปัฏฐาน ๔ สัมมัปปธาน ๔ อิทธิบาท ๔ อินทรีย์ ๕ พละ ๕ โพชฌงค์ ๗ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนรอยนิ้วมือ หรือรอยนิ้วหัวแม่มือ ย่อมปรากฏอยู่ที่ด้ามเครื่องมือของนายช่างไม้ หรือลูกมือของนายช่างไม้ แต่เขาไม่รู้อย่างนี้ว่า วันนี้ด้ามเครื่องมือของเราสึกไปเท่านี้ เมื่อวานสึกไปเท่านี้ หรือเมื่อวานซืนสึกไปเท่านี้ โดยที่แท้ เมื่อด้ามเครื่องมือสึกไป เขาก็รู้ว่ามันสึกไปเท่านั้น ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เมื่อภิกษุประกอบเนืองๆ ในการเจริญภาวนาอยู่ แม้จะไม่รู้อย่างนี้ว่า วันนี้อาสวะของเราสิ้นไปเท่านี้ เมื่อวานสิ้นไปเท่านี้ หรือเมื่อวานซืนสิ้นไปเท่านี้ โดยที่แท้ เมื่ออาสวะสิ้นไป ภิกษุนั้นก็รู้ว่าสิ้นไปเท่านั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนเรือเดินสมุทรที่ผูกด้วยเครื่องผูก คือ หวาย แช่อยู่ในน้ำตลอด ๖ เดือน ถึงฤดูหนาวเขายก (เรือนั้น) ขึ้นบก เครื่องผูกถูกต้องลมและแดดแล้ว อันฝนตกรดแล้ว ย่อมจะเสียไป ผุไป โดยไม่ยากเลย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เมื่อภิกษุประกอบเนืองๆ ในการเจริญภาวนาอยู่ สังโยชน์ทั้งหลายย่อมสงบระงับไปโดยไม่ยาก.
