Five hindrances that weaken wisdom.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants!”
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“Mendicants, there are these five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom. What five? Sensual desire … Ill will … Dullness and drowsiness … Restlessness and remorse … Doubt … These are the five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom.
Take a mendicant who has feeble and weak wisdom, not having given up these five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom. It’s simply impossible that they would know what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both; or that they would realize any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones.
Suppose there was a mountain river that flowed swiftly, going far, carrying all before it. But then a man would open channels on both sides, so the mid-river current would be dispersed, spread out, and separated. The river would no longer flow swiftly, going far, carrying all before it.
In the same way, take a mendicant who has feeble and weak wisdom, not having given up these five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom. It’s simply impossible that they would know what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both; or that they would realize any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones.
Take a mendicant who has powerful wisdom, having given up these five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom. It’s quite possible that they would know what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both; or that they would realize any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones.
Suppose there was a mountain river that flowed swiftly, going far, carrying all before it. But then a man would close up the channels on both sides, so the mid-river current would not be dispersed, spread out, and separated. The river would keep flowing swiftly for a long way, carrying all before it.
In the same way, take a mendicant who has powerful wisdom, having given up these five obstacles and hindrances, parasites of the mind that weaken wisdom. It’s quite possible that they would know what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both; or that they would realize any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones.”

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus!”
“Venerable sir!” those bhikkhus replied. The Blessed One said this:
“Bhikkhus, there are these five obstructions, hindrances, encumbrances of the mind, states that weaken wisdom. What five? (1) Sensual desire is an obstruction, a hindrance, an encumbrance of the mind, a state that weakens wisdom. (2) Ill will … (3) Dullness and drowsiness … (4) Restlessness and remorse … (5) Doubt is an obstruction, a hindrance, an encumbrance of the mind, a state that weakens wisdom. These are the five obstructions, hindrances, encumbrances of the mind, states that weaken wisdom.
“Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these five obstructions, hindrances, encumbrances of the mind, states that weaken wisdom, it is impossible that a bhikkhu, with his powerless and feeble wisdom, might know his own good, the good of others, or the good of both, or realize a superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones. Suppose a river were flowing down from a mountain, traveling a long distance, with a swift current, carrying along much flotsam. Then, on both of its banks, a man would open irrigation channels. In such a case, the current in the middle of the river would be dispersed, spread out, and divided, so that the river would no longer travel a long distance, with a swift current, carrying along much flotsam. So too, without having abandoned these five obstructions … it is impossible that a bhikkhu … might realize a superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones.
“But, bhikkhus, having abandoned these five obstructions, hindrances, encumbrances of the mind, states that weaken wisdom, it is possible that a bhikkhu, with his powerful wisdom, might know his own good, the good of others, and the good of both, and realize a superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones. Suppose a river were flowing down from a mountain, traveling a long distance, with a swift current, carrying along much flotsam. Then a man would close up the irrigation channels on both of its banks. In such a case, the current in the middle of the river would not be dispersed, spread out, and divided, so that the river could travel a long distance, with a swift current, carrying along much flotsam. สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้น … พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ ครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น คือ กามฉันทะครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง
๒) นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น คือ พยาบาทครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง
๓) นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น คือ ถีนมิทธะครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง
๔) นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น คือ อุทธัจจกุกกุจะครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง
๕) นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น คือ วิจิกิจฉาครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น ๕ ประการเหล่านี้แล ครอบงำจิตแล้ว ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลัง.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนั้นไม่ละนิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ อันครอบงำจิต ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลังแล้ว จักรู้ประโยชน์ของตน จักรู้ประโยชน์ของผู้อื่น จักรู้ประโยชน์ของทั้งสองฝ่าย หรือจักทำให้แจ้งซึ่งญาณทัสสนะอันวิเศษ ที่สามารถกระทำความเป็นอริยะ ยิ่งกว่าธรรมของมนุษย์ ด้วยปัญญาที่ไม่มีกำลัง ข้อนี้ไม่เป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนแม่น้ำที่ไหลลงจากภูเขาไปสู่ที่ไกล มีกระแสอันเชี่ยว (สามารถ) พัดพาสิ่งที่จะพัดไปได้ มีบุรุษมาเปิดช่องทั้งหลายที่เขาขุดขึ้นทั้งสองฝั่งของแม่น้ำนั้น เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ กระแสน้ำในท่ามกลางแห่งแม่น้ำนั้น ก็ซัดส่าย ไหลผิดทาง ไม่พึงไหลไปสู่ที่ไกล ไม่มีกระแสเชี่ยว ไม่ (สามารถ) พัดพาสิ่งที่จะพัดไปได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ที่ภิกษุเมื่อไม่ละนิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ อันครอบงำจิต ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลังแล้ว จักรู้ประโยชน์ของตน จักรู้ประโยชน์ของผู้อื่น จักรู้ประโยชน์ของทั้งสองฝ่าย หรือจักทำให้แจ้งซึ่งญาณทัสสนะอันวิเศษ ที่สามารถกระทำความเป็นอริยะ ยิ่งกว่าธรรมของมนุษย์ ด้วยปัญญาที่ไม่มีกำลัง ข้อนี้ไม่เป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุนั้นละนิวรณ์เครื่องกางกั้น ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ อันครอบงำจิต ทำปัญญาให้ถอยกำลังแล้ว จักรู้ประโยชน์ของตน จักรู้ประโยชน์ของผู้อื่น จักรู้ประโยชน์ของทั้งสองฝ่าย หรือจักทำให้แจ้งซึ่งญาณทัสสนะอันวิเศษ ที่สามารถกระทำความเป็นอริยะ ยิ่งกว่าธรรมของมนุษย์ ด้วยปัญญาที่มีกำลัง ข้อนี้เป็นฐานะที่จะมีได้.
