Five principles for enlightenment

“Mendicants, any monk or nun who develops and cultivates five qualities can expect one of two results: enlightenment in the present life, or if there’s something left over, non-return. What five? It’s when a mendicant has well established mindfulness inside themselves in order to understand the arising and passing away of phenomena, meditates observing the ugliness of the body, perceives the repulsiveness of food, perceives dissatisfaction with the whole world, and observes the impermanence of all conditions. Any monk or nun who develops and cultivates these five qualities can expect one of two results: enlightenment in the present life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.” ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีรูปใด เมื่อเจริญ กระทำให้มาก ซึ่งธรรม ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ ผลอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในบรรดาผล ๒ ประการ เป็นสิ่งที่เธอหวังได้ คือ อรหัตตผลในปัจจุบัน หรือถ้ายังมีอุปาทิเหลืออยู่ ก็จะเป็นอนาคามี ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ๑) เป็นผู้มีสติอันเข้าไปตั้งไว้ด้วยดีเฉพาะตน เพื่อปัญญาที่รู้ถึงความเกิดขึ้นและความดับไปแห่งธรรมทั้งหลาย. ๒) พิจารณาเห็นความไม่งามในกาย ๓) มีความสำคัญว่าเป็นของปฏิกูลในอาหาร ๔) มีความสำคัญว่าโลกทั้งปวงไม่มีอะไรที่น่ายินดี ๕) พิจารณาเห็นความไม่เที่ยงในสังขารทั้งปวง ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุหรือภิกษุณีรูปใด เมื่อเจริญ กระทำให้มาก ซึ่งธรรม ๕ ประการเหล่านี้ ผลอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในบรรดาผล ๒ ประการ เป็นสิ่งที่เธอหวังได้ คือ อรหัตตผลในปัจจุบัน หรือถ้ายังมีอุปาทิเหลืออยู่ ก็จะเป็นอนาคามี.
