Precepts regarding seven fires.

Now at that time the brahmin Uggatasarīra had prepared a large sacrifice. Bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats and rams—five hundred of each—had been led to the post for the sacrifice.
Then the brahmin Uggatasarīra went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, “Master Gotama, I have heard that kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post is very fruitful and beneficial.”
“I’ve also heard this, brahmin.”
For a second time … and third time Uggatasarīra said to the Buddha, “Master Gotama, I have heard that kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post is very fruitful and beneficial.”
“I’ve also heard this, brahmin.”
“Then Master Gotama and I are in total agreement in this matter.”
When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to Uggatasarīra, “Brahmin, you shouldn’t ask the Buddha in this way. You should ask in this way: ‘Sir, I want to kindle the sacrificial fire and raise the sacrificial post. May the Buddha please advise and instruct me. It will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.’”
Then Uggatasarīra said to the Buddha, “Sir, I want to kindle the sacrificial fire and raise the sacrificial post. May Master Gotama please advise and instruct me. It will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.”
“Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises three unskillful knives which ripen and result in suffering. What three? The knives of the body, speech, and mind. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one gives rise to the thought: ‘May this many bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams be slaughtered for the sacrifice!’ Thinking, ‘May I make merit’, one makes bad karma. Thinking, ‘May I do good’, one does bad. Thinking, ‘May I seek the path to a good rebirth’, one seeks the path to a bad rebirth. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one raises this first unskillful mental knife which ripens and results in suffering.
Furthermore, even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one says such things as: ‘May this many bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams be slaughtered for the sacrifice!’ Thinking, ‘May I make merit’, one makes bad karma. Thinking, ‘May I do good’, one does bad. Thinking, ‘May I seek the path to a good rebirth’, one seeks the path to a bad rebirth. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one raises this second unskillful verbal knife which ripens and results in suffering.
Furthermore, even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one first personally undertakes preparations for the sacrificial slaughter of bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams. Thinking, ‘May I make merit’, one makes bad karma. Thinking, ‘May I do good’, one does bad. Thinking, ‘May I seek the path to a good rebirth’, one seeks the path to a bad rebirth. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises this third unskillful bodily knife which ripens and results in suffering. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises these three unskillful knives which ripen and result in suffering.
Brahmin, these three fires should be given up and rejected, not cultivated. What three? The fires of greed, hate, and delusion.
And why should the fire of greed be given up and rejected, not cultivated? A greedy person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. That’s why the fire of greed should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.
And why should the fire of hate be given up and rejected, not cultivated? A hateful person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. That’s why the fire of hate should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.
And why should the fire of delusion be given up and rejected, not cultivated? A deluded person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. That’s why the fire of delusion should be given up and rejected, not cultivated. These three fires should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.
Brahmin, you should properly and happily take care of three fires, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them. What three? The fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods. The fire of a householder. And the fire of those worthy of a religious donation.
And what is the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods? Your mother and father are called the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods. Why is that? Since it is from them that you’ve been incubated and produced. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.
And what is the fire of a householder? Your children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff are called a householder’s fire. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.
And what is the fire of those worthy of a religious donation? The ascetics and brahmins who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves are called the fire of those worthy of a religious donation. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it. You should properly and happily take care of these three fires, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them.
But the wood fire, brahmin, should, from time to time, be fanned, watched over with equanimity, extinguished, or put aside.”
When he said this, the brahmin Uggatasarīra said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life. Master Gotama, I now set free these five hundred bulls, five hundred bullocks, five hundred heifers, five hundred goats, and five hundred rams. I give them life! May they eat grass and drink cool water and enjoy a cool breeze!”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ก็สมัยนั้น อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์กำลังตระเตรียมมหายัญ (โดยที่) โคตัวผู้ ๕๐๐ ตัว ลูกโคตัวผู้ ๕๐๐ ตัว ลูกโคตัวเมีย ๕๐๐ ตัว แพะ ๕๐๐ ตัว แกะ ๕๐๐ ตัว ถูกนำเข้าไปผูกไว้ที่หลักเพื่อทำการบูชายัญ ลำดับนั้น อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ได้ปราศรัยกับพระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นผ่านการปราศรัยพอให้ระลึกถึงกันไปแล้ว จึงนั่ง ณ สมควร.
ครั้นแล้วได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังมาดังนี้ว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ ย่อมมีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า พราหมณ์ แม้เราเองก็ได้ฟังมาว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก.
แม้ครั้งที่ ๒ อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ก็ได้กราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังมาดังนี้ว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก.
พราหมณ์ แม้เราก็ได้ฟังมาว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมากมีอานิสงส์มาก.
แม้ครั้งที่ ๓ อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ก็ได้กราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ได้ฟังมาดังนี้ว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก.
พราหมณ์ แม้เราก็ได้ฟังมาว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมากมีอานิสงส์มาก.
ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้อความทั้งหมดของข้าพระองค์ เข้ากันได้กับข้อความของท่านพระโคดม.
เมื่ออุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์กราบทูลอย่างนี้แล้ว ท่านพระอานนท์ ได้กล่าวกะอุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ว่า พราหมณ์ ท่านไม่ควรถามพระตถาคตอย่างนี้ว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ได้สดับมาดังนี้ว่า การก่อไฟ การปักหลักบูชายัญ มีผลมาก มีอานิสงส์มาก แต่ท่านควรถามพระตถาคตอย่างนี้ว่า ภันเต ก็ข้าพระองค์ประสงค์จะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ขอพระผู้มีพระภาคโปรดตักเตือนสั่งสอน ข้อที่จะพึงเป็นไปเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูล เพื่อความสุขตลอดกาลนาน แก่ข้าพระองค์เถิด
ลำดับนั้น อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ได้กราบทูล พระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ประสงค์จะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ขอท่านพระโคดมโปรดตักเตือนสั่งสอน ข้อที่จะพึงเป็นไปเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูล เพื่อความสุขตลอดกาลนาน แก่ข้าพระองค์เถิด.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมเงื้อศาสตรา ๓ ชนิด อันเป็นอกุศล มีทุกข์เป็นกำไร มีทุกข์เป็นวิบาก ศาสตรา ๓ ชนิดอะไรบ้าง คือ ศาสตราทางกาย ศาสตราทางวาจา ศาสตราทางใจ.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมเกิดความคิดอย่างนี้ว่า ต้องฆ่าโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวเมียเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแพะเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแกะเท่านี้ตัว เพื่อบูชายัญ เขาคิดว่าจะทำบุญ แต่กลับทำบาป คิดว่าจะทำกุศล แต่กลับทำอกุศล คิดว่าจะแสวงหาทางสุคติ แต่กลับแสวงหาทางทุคติ พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมเงื้อศาสตราทางใจข้อที่ ๑ นี้ อันเป็นอกุศล มีทุกข์เป็นกำไร มีทุกข์เป็นวิบาก.
พราหมณ์ อีกประการหนึ่ง บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมกล่าววาจา (สั่ง) อย่างนี้ว่า จงฆ่าโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวเมียเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแพะเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแกะเท่านี้ตัว เพื่อบูชายัญ เขาสั่งว่าจะทำบุญ แต่กลับทำบาป สั่งว่าจะทำกุศล แต่กลับทำอกุศล สั่งว่าจะแสวงหาทางสุคติ แต่กลับแสวงหาทางทุคติ พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมเงื้อศาสตราทางวาจาข้อที่ ๒ นี้ อันเป็นอกุศลมีทุกข์เป็นกำไร มีทุกข์เป็นวิบาก.
พราหมณ์ อีกประการหนึ่ง บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมลงมือด้วยตนเองก่อน คือ ต้องฆ่าโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวผู้เท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าลูกโคตัวเมียเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแพะเท่านี้ตัว ฆ่าแกะเท่านี้ตัว เพื่อบูชายัญ เขาลงมือว่าจะทำบุญ แต่กลับทำบาป ลงมือว่าจะทำกุศล แต่กลับทำอกุศล ลงมือว่าจะแสวงหาทางสุคติ แต่กลับแสวงหาทางทุคติ พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนการบูชายัญ ย่อมเงื้อศาสตราทางกายข้อที่ ๓ นี้ อันเป็นอกุศล มีทุกข์เป็นกำไร มีทุกข์เป็นวิบาก.
พราหมณ์ บุคคลเมื่อจะก่อไฟ ปักหลักบูชายัญ ก่อนที่จะบูชายัญ ย่อมเงื้อศาสตรา ๓ อย่างเหล่านี้แล อันเป็นอกุศล มีทุกข์เป็นกำไร มีทุกข์เป็นวิบาก.
พราหมณ์ ไฟ ๓ กองนี้ บุคคลควรละ ควรเว้น ไม่ควรซ่องเสพ ไฟ ๓ กองอะไรบ้าง คือ ไฟ คือ ราคะ ไฟ คือ โทสะ ไฟ คือ โมหะ.
พราหมณ์ เพราะเหตุอะไร จึงควรละ ควรเว้น ไม่ควรซ่องเสพไฟ คือ ราคะนี้ เพราะบุคคลผู้ที่กำหนัด ถูกราคะครอบงำย่ำยีจิต ย่อมประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจได้ ครั้นประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจแล้ว ภายหลังจากการตาย เพราะการทำลายแห่งกาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก ดังนั้น จึงควรละ ควรเว้นเสีย ไม่ควรซ่องเสพไฟ คือ ราคะนี้.
พราหมณ์ เพราะเหตุไร จึงควรละ ควรเว้น ไม่ควรซ่องเสพไฟ คือ โทสะนี้ เพราะบุคคลผู้ที่โกรธ ถูกโทสะครอบงำย่ำยีจิต ย่อมประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจได้ ครั้นประพฤติทุจริตทางกาย ประพฤติทุจริตทางวาจา ประพฤติทุจริตทางใจแล้ว ภายหลังจากการตาย เพราะการทำลายแห่งกาย ย่อมเข้าถึงอบาย ทุคติ วินิบาต นรก ดังนั้น จึงควรละ ควรเว้นเสีย ไม่ควรซ่องเสพไฟ คือ โทสะนี้.

พราหมณ์ บุคคลควรละ ควรเว้น ไม่ควรซ่องเสพไฟ ๓ กองเหล่านี้แล.
พราหมณ์ ไฟ ๓ กองนี้บุคคลควรสักการะ เคารพ นับถือ บูชา บริหารให้อยู่เป็นสุขโดยถูกต้อง ไฟ ๓ กองอะไรบ้าง คือ ไฟ คือ อาหุไนยบุคคล ไฟ คือ คหบดี ไฟ คือ ทักขิไณยบุคคล.
พราหมณ์ ก็ไฟ คือ อาหุไนยบุคคลเป็นอย่างไร พราหมณ์ บุคคลในกรณีนี้ คือ มารดาและบิดา เหล่านี้เรียกว่า ไฟคืออาหุไนยบุคคล ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร เพราะบุคคลย่อมเกิดมาจากมารดาและบิดา ดังนั้น ไฟ คือ อาหุไนยบุคคล จึงควรสักการะ เคารพ นับถือ บูชา บริหารให้อยู่เป็นสุขโดยถูกต้อง.
พราหมณ์ ก็ไฟ คือ คหบดีเป็นอย่างไร พราหมณ์ บุคคลในกรณีนี้ คือ บุตร ภรรยา ทาส หรือคนใช้ เหล่านี้เรียกว่า ไฟ คือ คหบดี ดังนั้น ไฟคือคหบดี จึงควรสักการะ เคารพ นับถือ บูชา บริหารให้อยู่เป็นสุขโดยถูกต้อง.
พราหมณ์ ก็ไฟ คือ ทักขิไณยบุคคลเป็นอย่างไร พราหมณ์ สมณะหรือพราหมณ์ในกรณีนี้ ผู้งดเว้นจากความมัวเมาและความประมาท ผู้ตั้งอยู่ในขันติและโสรัจจะ ผู้ฝึกฝน ทำความสงบ ทำความดับเย็นแก่ตนเอง เหล่านี้เรียกว่า ไฟ คือ ทักขิไณยบุคคล ดังนั้น ไฟ คือ ทักขิไณยบุคคลนี้ จึงควรสักการะ เคารพ นับถือ บูชา บริหารให้อยู่เป็นสุขโดยถูกต้อง.
พราหมณ์ ไฟ ๓ กองเหล่านี้แล บุคคลควรสักการะ เคารพ นับถือ บูชา บริหารให้อยู่เป็นสุขโดยโดยถูกต้อง
พราหมณ์ ส่วนไฟที่เกิดจากไม้ ควรก่อให้โพลงขึ้น ควรคอยดู ควรดับ ควรเก็บไว้ตามกาลอันควร.
เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสอย่างนี้แล้ว อุคคตสรีรพราหมณ์ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่มแจ้งนัก ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ภาษิตของพระองค์แจ่งแจ้งนัก เปรียบเหมือนบุคคลหงายของที่คว่ำ เปิดของที่ปิด บอกทางแก่คนหลงทา หรือส่องประทีปไว้ในที่มืด ด้วยตั้งใจว่าคนมีตาดีจะได้มองเห็น ดังนี้ ท่านพระโคมทรงประกาศธรรมโดยอเนกปริยายอย่างนี้ ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์ขอถึงท่านพระโคดม กับทั้งพระธรรม และทั้งพระภิกษุสงฆ์ว่าเป็นสรณะ ขอท่านพระโคดมโปรดทรงจำข้าพระองค์ว่า เป็นอุบาสกผู้ถึงสรณะตลอดชีวิตตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป.
ข้าแต่พระโคดมผู้เจริญ ข้าพระองค์นี้จะปล่อยโคตัวผู้ ๕๐๐ ตัว ลูกโคตัวผู้ ๕๐๐ ตัว ลูกโคตัวเมีย ๕๐๐ ตัว แพะ ๕๐๐ ตัว แกะ ๕๐๐ ตัว ให้มันมีชีวิต พวกมันจะได้พากันไปกินหญ้าที่เขียวสด ดื่มน้ำที่เย็นสะอาด และรับลมที่เย็นสดชื่น.
