Dwelling with a faithful head of family leads to prosperity.(1)

“Mendicants, great sal trees grow in five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains. What five? The branches, leaves, and foliage; the bark; the shoots; the softwood; and the hardwood. Great sal trees grow in these five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.
In the same way, a family grows in five ways supported by a family head with faith. What five? Faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. A family grows in these five ways supported by a family head with faith.
Supported by the mountain crags
in the wilds, the formidable forest,
the tree grows
to become lord of the forest.
So too, when the family head
is ethical and faithful,
supported by them, they grow:
children, partners, and kin,
colleagues, relatives,
and those dependent for their livelihood.
Seeing the ethical conduct of the virtuous,
the generosity and good deeds,
those who see clearly
do likewise.
Having practiced the teaching here,
the path that goes to a good place,
they delight in the heavenly realm,
enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”

“Bhikkhus, based on the Himalayas, the king of mountains, great sal trees grow in five ways. What five? (1) They grow in branches, leaves, and foliage; (2) they grow in bark; (3) they grow in shoots; (4) they grow in softwood; and (5) they grow in heartwood. Based on the Himalayas, the king of mountains, great sal trees grow in these five ways.
“So too, when the head of the family is endowed with faith, the people in the family who depend on him grow in five ways. What five? (1) They grow in faith; (2) they grow in virtuous behavior; (3) they grow in learning; (4) they grow in generosity; and (5) they grow in wisdom. When the head of a family is endowed with faith, the people in the family who depend on him grow in these five ways.”
Just as the trees that grow
in dependence on a rocky mountain
in a vast forest wilderness
might become great ‘woodland lords,’
so, when the head of a family here
possesses faith and virtue,
his wife, children, and relatives
all grow in dependence on him;
so too his companions, his family circle,
and those dependent on him.
Those possessed of discernment,
seeing that virtuous man’s good conduct,
his generosity and good deeds,
emulate his example.
Having lived here in accord with Dhamma,
the path leading to a good destination,
those who desire sensual pleasures rejoice,
delighting in the deva world.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นสาละใหญ่อาศัยขุนเขาหิมวันต์ ย่อมเจริญด้วยความเจริญ ๕ ประการ ความเจริญ ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ย่อมเจริญด้วยกิ่ง ใบแก่ และใบอ่อน
๒) ย่อมเจริญด้วยเปลือก
๓) ย่อมเจริญด้วยสะเก็ด
๔) ย่อมเจริญด้วยกระพี้
๕) ย่อมเจริญด้วยแก่น
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ต้นสาละใหญ่อาศัยขุนเขาหิมวันต์ ย่อมเจริญด้วยความเจริญ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้แล.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น ชนภายในอาศัยเจ้าบ้านผู้มีศรัทธา ย่อมเจริญด้วยความเจริญ ๕ ประการ ความเจริญ ๕ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ
๑) ย่อมเจริญด้วยศรัทธา
๒) ย่อมเจริญด้วยศีล
๓) ย่อมเจริญด้วยสุตะ
๔) ย่อมเจริญด้วยจาคะ
๕) ย่อมเจริญด้วยปัญญา
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ชนภายในอาศัยเจ้าบ้านผู้มีศรัทธา ย่อมเจริญด้วยความเจริญ ๕ ประการเหล่านี้แล.
ต้นไม้ทั้งหลาย อาศัยภูเขาหินในป่าใหญ่
ย่อมเจริญเติบโตขึ้นเป็นไม้ใหญ่ชั้นเจ้าป่า ฉันใด
บุตร ภรรยา มิตร อำมาตย์ หมู่ญาติ
และคนที่เข้าไปอาศัยเลี้ยงชีวิตทั้งหลายในกรณีนี้
ได้อาศัยกุลบุตรผู้มีศรัทธา สมบูรณ์ด้วยศีล ย่อมเจริญได้ ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน
ชนเหล่านั้นเห็นศีล จาคะ และสุจริตทั้งหลาย
ของกุลบุตรผู้มีศีล จาคะ และสุจริตนั้น
เมื่อประจักษ์ชัดแล้ว ย่อมประพฤติตามชนเหล่านั้น
ครั้นประพฤติธรรม อันเป็นทางไปสู่สุคติในกรณีนี้แล้ว
ย่อมเป็นผู้เพลิดเพลิน เพียบพร้อมด้วยกามคุณ บันเทิงใจอยู่ในเทวโลก.
