Listening to the true teachings that are not beneficial and those that are beneficial.

“Mendicants, someone with six qualities is unable to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities even when listening to the true teaching. What six? When the teaching and practice proclaimed by the Realized One is being taught they don’t want to listen. They don’t lend an ear or apply their mind to understand them. They learn the incorrect meaning and reject the correct meaning. They accept views that contradict the teaching. Someone with these six qualities is unable to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities, even when listening to the true teaching.
Someone with six qualities is able to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities when listening to the true teaching. What six? When the teaching and practice proclaimed by the Realized One is being taught they want to listen. They lend an ear and apply their mind to understand them. They learn the correct meaning and reject the incorrect meaning. They accept views that agree with the teaching. Someone with these six qualities is able to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities when listening to the true teaching.”

“Endowed with these six qualities, a person is incapable of alighting on the lawfulness, the rightness of skillful qualities even when listening to the true Dhamma. Which six?
“When the Dhamma & Vinaya declared by the Tathāgata is being taught, he does not listen well, does not give ear, does not apply his mind to gnosis, grabs hold of what is worthless, rejects what is worthwhile, and is not endowed with the patience [or: preference] to comply with the teaching.
“Endowed with these six qualities, a person is incapable of alighting on the lawfulness, the rightness of skillful qualities even when listening to the true Dhamma.
“Endowed with these six qualities, a person is capable of alighting on the lawfulness, the rightness of skillful qualities even while listening to the true Dhamma. Which six?
“When the Dhamma & Vinaya declared by the Tathāgata is being taught, he listens well, gives ear, applies his mind to gnosis, rejects what is worthless, grabs hold of what is worthwhile, and is endowed with the patience [or: preference] to comply with the teaching.
“Endowed with these six qualities, a person is capable of alighting on the lawfulness, the rightness of skillful qualities even while listening to the true Dhamma.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๖ ประการ แม้ฟังสัทธรรมอยู่ก็เป็นผู้ไม่ควรเพื่อก้าวลงสู่สัมมัตตนิยาม (ความแน่นอนในความถูกต้อง) ในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๖ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ เมื่อธรรมวินัยที่ตถาคตประกาศแล้ว อันบุคคลอื่นแสดงอยู่
๑) ย่อมไม่ฟังด้วยดี
๒) ย่อมไม่เงี่ยโสตลงฟัง
๓) ย่อมไม่เข้าไปตั้งจิตเพื่อจะรู้ทั่วถึง
๔) ย่อมถือเอาแต่สิ่งที่ไม่เป็นประโยชน์
๕) ย่อมทิ้งสิ่งที่เป็นประโยชน์
๖) ย่อมเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยขันติ (ความชอบใจ) ที่ไม่สมควร
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๖ ประการเหล่านี้แล แม้ฟังสัทธรรมอยู่ ก็เป็นผู้ไม่ควรเพื่อก้าวลงสู่สัมมัตตนิยามในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๖ ประการ แม้ฟังสัทธรรมอยู่ ก็เป็นผู้ควรเพื่อก้าวลงสู่สัมมัตตนิยามในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ธรรม ๖ ประการอะไรบ้าง คือ เมื่อธรรมวินัยที่ตถาคตประกาศแล้ว อันบุคคลอื่นแสดงอยู่
๑) ย่อมฟังด้วยดี
๒) ย่อมเงี่ยโสตลงฟัง
๓) ย่อมเข้าไปตั้งจิตเพื่อรู้ทั่วถึง
๔) ย่อมถือเอาแต่สิ่งที่เป็นประโยชน์
๕) ย่อมละทิ้งสิ่งที่ไม่เป็นประโยชน์
๖) ย่อมเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยขันติ (ความชอบใจ) ที่สมควร
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๖ ประการเหล่านี้แล แม้ฟังสัทธรรมอยู่ ก็เป็นผู้ควรเพื่อก้าวลงสู่สัมมัตตนิยามในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย.
