Old action and new action.

“Mendicants, I will teach you old action, new action, the cessation of action, and the practice that leads to the cessation of action. Listen and pay close attention, I will speak. …
And what is old action?
The eye is old action. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt.
The ear … nose … tongue … body … mind is old action. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt.
This is called old action.
And what is new action?
The deeds you currently perform by way of body, speech, and mind.
This is called new action.
And what is the cessation of action?
When you experience freedom due to the cessation of deeds by body, speech, and mind.
This is called the cessation of action.
And what’s the practice that leads to the cessation of action?
It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
This is called the practice that leads to the cessation of action.
So, mendicants, I’ve taught you old action, new action, the cessation of action, and the practice that leads to the cessation of action.
Out of compassion, I’ve done what a teacher should do who wants what’s best for their disciples. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicants! Don’t be negligent! Don’t regret it later! This is my instruction to you.”

“Bhikkhus, I will teach you new and old kamma, the cessation of kamma, and the way leading to the cessation of kamma. Listen to that and attend closely, I will speak….
“And what, bhikkhus, is old kamma? The eye is old kamma, to be seen as generated and fashioned by volition, as something to be felt. The ear is old kamma … The mind is old kamma, to be seen as generated and fashioned by volition, as something to be felt. This is called old kamma.
“And what, bhikkhus is new kamma? Whatever action one does now by body, speech, or mind. This is called new kamma.
“And what, bhikkhus, is the cessation of kamma? When one reaches liberation through the cessation of bodily action, verbal action, and mental action, this is called the cessation of kamma.
“And what, bhikkhus, is the way leading to the cessation of kamma? It is this Noble Eightfold Path; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.
“Thus, bhikkhus, I have taught old kamma, I have taught new kamma, I have taught the cessation of kamma, I have taught the way leading to the cessation of kamma. Whatever should be done, bhikkhus, by a compassionate teacher out of compassion for his disciples, desiring their welfare, that I have done for you. These are the feet of trees, bhikkhus, these are empty huts. Meditate, bhikkhus, do not be negligent, lest you regret it later. This is our instruction to you.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เราจักแสดงซึ่งกรรมทั้งใหม่และเก่า ความดับแห่งกรรม และปฏิปทาให้ถึงความดับแห่งกรรม เธอทั้งหลายจงฟัง จงใส่ใจให้ดี เราจักกล่าว.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กรรมเก่าเป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตาอันเธอทั้งหลาย พึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา หูอันเธอทั้งหลายพึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา จมูกอันเธอทั้งหลายพึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา ลิ้นอันเธอทั้งหลาย พึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา กายอันเธอทั้งหลายพึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา ใจอันเธอทั้งหลายพึงเห็นว่าเป็นกรรมเก่า อันปัจจัยปรุงแต่งขึ้น สำเร็จด้วยเจตนา เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งเวทนา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า กรรมเก่า.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กรรมใหม่เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่บุคคลกระทำกรรม ด้วยกาย ด้วยวาจา ด้วยใจ ในกาลบัดนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า กรรมใหม่.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความดับแห่งกรรม เป็นอย่างไร คือ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ข้อที่บุคคลถูกต้องวิมุตติ เพราะความดับแห่งกายกรรม วจีกรรม และมโนกรรม ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ความดับแห่งกรรม.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ปฏิปทาให้ถึงความดับแห่งกรรมเป็นอย่างไร คือ อริยมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์ ๘ ประการเหล่านี้ เป็นปฏิปทาให้ถึงความดับแห่งกรรม คือ สัมมาทิฏฐิ สัมมาสังกัปปะ สัมมาวาจา สัมมากัมมันตะ สัมมาอาชีวะ สัมมาวายามะ สัมมาสติ และสัมมาสมาธิ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ปฏิปทาให้ถึงความดับแห่งกรรม.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ด้วยประการดังนี้แล กรรมเก่าเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว กรรมใหม่เราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ความดับแห่งกรรมเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ปฏิปทาให้ถึงความดับแห่งกรรมเราก็ได้แสดงแล้วแก่เธอทั้งหลาย.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กิจใดที่ศาสดาผู้เอ็นดู แสวงหาประโยชน์เกื้อกูล อาศัยความเอ็นดูแล้ว จะพึงทำแก่สาวกทั้งหลาย กิจนั้นเราได้ทำแล้วแก่พวกเธอ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นั่นโคนไม้ นั่นเรือนว่าง พวกเธอจงเพียรเผากิเลส อย่าได้ประมาท อย่าได้เป็นผู้ที่ต้องมีความเดือดร้อนใจในภายหลังเลย นี่แล เป็นคำสอนของเราสำหรับเธอทั้งหลาย.
