The arising and ceasing of suffering. (2)

At Sāvatthī.
“Mendicants, what you intend or plan, and what you have underlying tendencies for become a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established, name and form are conceived. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields. The six sense fields are conditions for contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. … craving … grasping … continued existence … rebirth … old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress come to be. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan, but still have underlying tendencies, this becomes a support for the continuation of consciousness. When this support exists, consciousness becomes established. When consciousness is established, name and form are conceived. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
If you don’t intend or plan or have underlying tendencies, this doesn’t become a support for the continuation of consciousness. With no support, consciousness is not established. When consciousness is not established, name and form are not conceived. When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

At Savatthī. “Bhikkhus, what one intends, and what one plans, and whatever one has a tendency towards: this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis, there is a support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is established and has come to growth, there is a descent of name-and-form. With name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases come to be; with the six sense bases as condition, contact; with contact as condition, feeling … craving … clinging … existence … birth; with birth as condition, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“If, bhikkhus, one does not intend, and one does not plan, but one still has a tendency towards something, this becomes a basis for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is a basis, there is a support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is established and has come to growth, there is a descent of name-and-form. With name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases come to be…. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
“But, bhikkhus, when one does not intend, and one does not plan, and one does not have a tendency towards anything, no basis exists for the maintenance of consciousness. When there is no basis, there is no support for the establishing of consciousness. When consciousness is unestablished and does not come to growth, there is no descent of name-and-form. With the cessation of name-and-form comes cessation of the six sense bases…. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.”
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลย่อมคิดถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ ย่อมดำริถึงสิ่งใดอยู่ และย่อมมีจิตฝังลงไป ในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การก้าวลงแห่งนามรูป ย่อมมี เพราะมีนามรูปเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีสฬายตนะ เพราะมีสฬายตนะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีผัสสะ เพราะมีผัสสะเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีเวทนา เพราะมีเวทนาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีตัณหา เพราะมีตัณหาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีอุปาทาน เพราะมีอุปาทานเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีภพ เพราะมีภพเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชาติ เพราะมีชาติเป็นปัจจัย ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลาย จึงเกิดขึ้นครบถ้วน ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ถ้าบุคคลย่อมไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใด ย่อมไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใด แต่เขายังมีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใดอยู่ สิ่งนั้นย่อมเป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญาณ เมื่ออารมณ์มีอยู่ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมมี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การก้าวลงแห่งนามรูปย่อมมี เพราะมีนามรูปเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีสฬายตนะ … ความเกิดขึ้นพร้อมแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ในกาลใด ถ้าบุคคลย่อมไม่คิดถึงสิ่งใด ย่อมไม่ดำริถึงสิ่งใด และย่อมไม่มีจิตฝังลงไปในสิ่งใด ในกาลนั้น สิ่งนั้นย่อมไม่เป็นอารมณ์เพื่อการตั้งอยู่แห่งวิญญา เมื่ออารมณ์ไม่มี ความตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะแห่งวิญญาณย่อมไม่มี เมื่อวิญญาณนั้นไม่ตั้งขึ้นเฉพาะ ไม่เจริญงอกงามแล้ว การก้าวลงแห่งนามรูปย่อมไม่มี เพราะมีความดับแห่งนามรูป จึงมีความดับแห่งสฬายตนะ เพราะมีความดับแห่งสฬายตนะ จึงมีความดับแห่งผัสสะ เพราะมีความดับแห่งผัสสะ จึงมีความดับแห่งเวทนา เพราะมีความดับแห่งเวทนา จึงมีความดับแห่งตัณหา เพราะมีความดับแห่งตัณหา จึงมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน เพราะมีความดับแห่งอุปาทาน จึงมีความดับแห่งภพ เพราะมีความดับแห่งภพ จึงมีความดับแห่งชาติ เพราะมีความดับแห่งชาตินั่นแล ชรามรณะ โสกปริเทวะ ทุกขโทมนัส และอุปายาสทั้งหลาย จึงดับสิ้น ความดับลงแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยอาการอย่างนี้ ดังนี้.
